00:02:09 | 00:02:13 | about finding people who have a problem |
00:02:11 | 00:02:15 | and providing a solution to that problem |
00:02:13 | 00:02:16 | and in a way you're kind of like you |
00:02:15 | 00:02:18 | know in mcdonald's you have to get |
00:02:16 | 00:02:20 | people to actually buy a hamburger from |
00:02:18 | 00:02:23 | you and then you have to actually make |
00:02:20 | 00:02:24 | and have a good operating not only the |
00:02:23 | 00:02:26 | hamburger but the process of getting a |
00:02:24 | 00:02:28 | hamburger needs to be done you have to |
00:02:26 | 00:02:31 | have people there you have to have sales |
00:02:28 | 00:02:32 | and execution you have to find people |
00:02:31 | 00:02:34 | that have the problem and then you |
00:02:32 | 00:02:37 | actually have to solve that problem and |
00:02:34 | 00:02:38 | whether if you're an accounting firm um |
00:02:37 | 00:02:40 | you know you need to find business |
00:02:38 | 00:02:43 | owners that need their taxes done |
00:02:40 | 00:02:45 | they're stuck in a in a situation they |

00:02:45 | 00:02:49 | they have ugly books and you're gonna |
00:02:47 | 00:02:50 | present a better future for them and you |

00:03:17 | 00:03:21 | people who know a ton about business who |

00:03:21 | 00:03:25 | big degrees a lot of times they're like |
00:03:23 | 00:03:28 | cpas they might be |
00:03:25 | 00:03:30 | very knowledgeable about business |
00:03:28 | 00:03:32 | and yet they never actually go in and |
00:03:30 | 00:03:34 | start they never actually do it there's |
00:03:32 | 00:03:36 | a number of reasons why one of the |
00:03:34 | 00:03:38 | reasons why is because it usually takes |
00:03:36 | 00:03:41 | time to build credibility in your own |
00:03:38 | 00:03:43 | mind it takes know-how to actually get |
00:03:41 | 00:03:44 | the customer you have to believe in |
00:03:43 | 00:03:46 | yourself to actually know that you're a |
00:03:44 | 00:03:47 | good solution if you don't believe in it |
00:03:46 | 00:03:49 | you're never going to do it and not only |
00:03:47 | 00:03:49 | that you have to go out and actually |
00:03:49 | 00:03:51 | like |
00:03:49 | 00:03:52 | do the front-end activity to get there |

00:03:52 | 00:03:56 | what i want to tok about is to me it's |
00:03:54 | 00:03:57 | a lot like fishing i'm going to use a |
00:03:56 | 00:03:59 | couple of analogies here and maybe it's |
00:03:57 | 00:04:01 | helpful for you so entrepreneurship to |
00:03:59 | 00:04:03 | me is there's two of them that i really |
00:04:01 | 00:04:04 | like one it's almost like being a |
00:04:03 | 00:04:07 | fishing |
00:04:04 | 00:04:08 | guide or a fisherman and here's here's a |
00:04:07 | 00:04:10 | little story when i was growing up so |
00:04:08 | 00:04:12 | i'm 40 years old now and the year is |
00:04:10 | 00:04:14 | 2022 and when i was growing up i grew up |
00:04:12 | 00:04:16 | in the suburbs of minneapolis here and |
00:04:14 | 00:04:18 | we had a little lake called man-made |
00:04:16 | 00:04:20 | lake and it was basically an old gravel |
00:04:18 | 00:04:23 | pit from the 70s that had been filled in |
00:04:20 | 00:04:25 | and it was just this rinky-dink little |
00:04:23 | 00:04:27 | pond and i loved fishing i had a buddy |
00:04:25 | 00:04:29 | who said hey man if we go out there and |
00:04:27 | 00:04:31 | we can catch a bunch of fish and we'd go |
00:04:29 | 00:04:33 | out to this little pond i i'd get my |
00:04:31 | 00:04:36 | little bike this bmx bike that i had or |
00:04:33 | 00:04:39 | this really corny looking murray |
00:04:36 | 00:04:42 | mountain bike and i'd put my red |
00:04:39 | 00:04:44 | what is it the the red wagon behind me |
00:04:42 | 00:04:46 | with the black handle i tie it on with a |
00:04:44 | 00:04:49 | rope and i'd pull it behind my bike i'd |
00:04:46 | 00:04:51 | throw my tackle box way too much tackle |
00:04:49 | 00:04:53 | i'd put a fishing rod in there we'd go |
00:04:51 | 00:04:54 | out down the road here |
00:04:53 | 00:04:56 | in our backyards and i'd go to my |
00:04:54 | 00:04:58 | buddy's house we would dig up worms and |
00:04:56 | 00:05:00 | we didn't go buy anything we dug our own |
00:04:58 | 00:05:02 | worms we'd bring the worms with us and |
00:05:00 | 00:05:03 | then i had some tackle and it never |
00:05:02 | 00:05:05 | really worked we'd ride our bikes about |
00:05:03 | 00:05:06 | a mile and a half down the road to |
00:05:05 | 00:05:09 | man-made lake which is now valley park |
00:05:06 | 00:05:11 | lake and we would go there and there was |
00:05:09 | 00:05:13 | this one spot next to a culvert where if |
00:05:11 | 00:05:15 | you put a hook and a bobber you just put |
00:05:13 | 00:05:17 | a worm on a hook and put it in there you |
00:05:15 | 00:05:19 | would catch sunfish immediately and |
00:05:17 | 00:05:21 | growing up it was actually quite a |
00:05:19 | 00:05:22 | robust area you would catch big sunfish |
00:05:21 | 00:05:23 | it was super fun |
00:05:22 | 00:05:25 | and there was |
00:05:23 | 00:05:27 | only sunfish like maybe every once in a |
00:05:25 | 00:05:29 | while bullhead but we never had the |
00:05:27 | 00:05:30 | experience of having real minnesota |
00:05:29 | 00:05:32 | fishing if you know anything about lake |
00:05:30 | 00:05:34 | fishing here in the twin cities or in |
00:05:32 | 00:05:37 | minneapolis or minnesota or up north or |
00:05:34 | 00:05:38 | anything it's walleyes and northerns and |
00:05:37 | 00:05:40 | big crappie and all this we never knew |
00:05:38 | 00:05:42 | any of that all we caught was sunfish |
00:05:40 | 00:05:43 | well one day i get invited to go to my |
00:05:42 | 00:05:45 | uncle's |
00:05:43 | 00:05:47 | um he had a lake |
00:05:45 | 00:05:48 | and and while his |
00:05:47 | 00:05:50 | his in-laws had a lake and we went to |
00:05:48 | 00:05:52 | this lake and i remember me and my |
00:05:50 | 00:05:54 | cousin trevor we jumped in this little |
00:05:52 | 00:05:56 | paddle boat and trevor really only knew |
00:05:54 | 00:05:59 | what he had to stream in his in decorah |
00:05:56 | 00:06:01 | iowa he only knew small fish too i only |
00:05:59 | 00:06:03 | knew how to catch sunfish i never really |
00:06:01 | 00:06:05 | caught anything but sunfish i had my |
00:06:03 | 00:06:06 | regular day-to-day catching sunfish i |
00:06:05 | 00:06:08 | had no idea |
00:06:06 | 00:06:10 | anything about catching anything else we |
00:06:08 | 00:06:12 | get in this little paddle boat we go off |
00:06:10 | 00:06:13 | and we saw these guys in a boat |
00:06:12 | 00:06:15 | and all of a sudden we look up and these |
00:06:13 | 00:06:17 | guys are pulling in northerns and |
00:06:15 | 00:06:18 | they're like like being a grown up now |
00:06:17 | 00:06:20 | and doing a little bit of fish they're |
00:06:18 | 00:06:23 | not very big northerns right but to us |
00:06:20 | 00:06:26 | they were monsters i was like oh my gosh |
00:06:23 | 00:06:28 | i want to catch that so i was like okay |
00:06:26 | 00:06:30 | i got glasses now if you didn't notike i |
00:06:28 | 00:06:31 | turned 40. i'm old now i can't see |

00:06:31 | 00:06:34 | i'm watching these guys and they're |

00:06:34 | 00:06:38 | you know they're they're they're casting |
00:06:36 | 00:06:40 | out what do you call them um a jig with |
00:06:38 | 00:06:42 | a spoon on it right and they're reeling |
00:06:40 | 00:06:44 | it in and like oh that's really cool i |
00:06:42 | 00:06:46 | have one of those i've never used one |
00:06:44 | 00:06:49 | i'll get it the guys disappeared as i |
00:06:46 | 00:06:51 | was tying it up and so i tie up my my my |
00:06:49 | 00:06:53 | little spinner bait my spinner what do |
00:06:51 | 00:06:54 | you call them they got like rubber bands |
00:06:53 | 00:06:56 | on them or whatever |
00:06:54 | 00:06:58 | and i'm like oh i don't know how to do |
00:06:56 | 00:06:59 | this like all right let's try it and i |

00:06:59 | 00:07:03 | weeds i'm like oh shoot weeds i don't |

00:07:03 | 00:07:06 | stupid thing so i throw a bobber out |

00:07:06 | 00:07:11 | bottom nothing happens i didn't catch a |
00:07:08 | 00:07:13 | northern that whole time until all of a |
00:07:11 | 00:07:15 | sudden i just caught one and i'm like |
00:07:13 | 00:07:17 | sweet and it was like it was game |
00:07:15 | 00:07:19 | changing it was like the biggest fish i |
00:07:17 | 00:07:20 | had ever caught in my entire life okay |
00:07:19 | 00:07:23 | so here's what i'm toking about here's |
00:07:20 | 00:07:26 | how this relates to business in a way |
00:07:23 | 00:07:28 | creating an outcome for a customer or |
00:07:26 | 00:07:30 | providing a solution and actually having |
00:07:28 | 00:07:32 | that solution |
00:07:30 | 00:07:33 | occur is kind of like catching a fish |
00:07:32 | 00:07:35 | you're producing fruit you're getting |
00:07:33 | 00:07:38 | fish you're you know all the analogies |
00:07:35 | 00:07:40 | that the bible uses too like the idea is |
00:07:38 | 00:07:41 | you're actually making something happen |
00:07:40 | 00:07:43 | and to a degree there's a lot of folks |
00:07:41 | 00:07:45 | that sit and watch people they work on a |
00:07:43 | 00:07:46 | boat that does fishing they're part of |
00:07:45 | 00:07:48 | the crew that does the fishing but they |
00:07:46 | 00:07:51 | never actually pull all the pieces |
00:07:48 | 00:07:53 | together to make it happen and so what |
00:07:51 | 00:07:55 | was interesting for me is i never knew |
00:07:53 | 00:07:57 | how to do that now if i were to approach |
00:07:55 | 00:08:00 | somebody and say hey can i take you |
00:07:57 | 00:08:02 | fishing to go catch some northerns and i |
00:08:00 | 00:08:03 | had no experience of actually catching |
00:08:02 | 00:08:06 | northerners i didn't know how it is no |
00:08:03 | 00:08:08 | do you catch northerns every day no |
00:08:06 | 00:08:10 | like i've also i've gone out with wise |
00:08:08 | 00:08:12 | competent northern fishermen so so fast |

00:08:12 | 00:08:16 | fisherman i marry in to a family who uh |

00:08:16 | 00:08:20 | like the coolest dude ever and they had |
00:08:18 | 00:08:23 | a cabin up north and he knows how to |
00:08:20 | 00:08:24 | fish and hunt and do everything and he's |
00:08:23 | 00:08:27 | got a proper fishing boat and he's got a |
00:08:24 | 00:08:28 | proper lake up by alexandria and i go |
00:08:27 | 00:08:30 | out with him |
00:08:28 | 00:08:32 | i've never had so much fun in my life i |
00:08:30 | 00:08:35 | hadn't caught a northern up to this |
00:08:32 | 00:08:37 | point for like this is 15 |
00:08:35 | 00:08:39 | 10 15 years later right and we get in |
00:08:37 | 00:08:41 | his boat and we start trolling back and |
00:08:39 | 00:08:42 | forth with rapula's and the rappos the |

00:08:42 | 00:08:46 | boom i'm getting hit with northerns that |
00:08:44 | 00:08:48 | make that other one that i caught and |
00:08:46 | 00:08:50 | the other ones i saw |
00:08:48 | 00:08:53 | minuscule they were teeny well |

00:09:43 | 00:09:47 | entrepreneurship or business ownership |
00:09:45 | 00:09:48 | you're finding people who are stuck in a |
00:09:47 | 00:09:51 | problem |
00:09:48 | 00:09:52 | and you're gonna provide a better future |

00:09:54 | 00:09:59 | so you're finding people that are stuck |

00:10:23 | 00:10:27 | go find people that have that problem |
00:10:25 | 00:10:30 | and in the beginning you should probably |
00:10:27 | 00:10:32 | be candid about the level of competency |
00:10:30 | 00:10:34 | experience or whatever it is |
00:10:32 | 00:10:37 | that you have in terms of providing that |
00:10:34 | 00:10:39 | solution if you're new by golly go out |
00:10:37 | 00:10:42 | and find people with the problem |
00:10:39 | 00:10:43 | and give it away for free or do it with |
00:10:42 | 00:10:46 | them or offer |
00:10:43 | 00:10:48 | offer to do it for cheap get repetitions |
00:10:46 | 00:10:50 | under your belt because when you do that |
00:10:48 | 00:10:52 | what you're going to find is as you gain |

00:10:52 | 00:10:56 | actually doing it suddenly you're going |
