00:00:00 00:00:03 hey everybody rob sat from feedback
00:00:02 00:00:04 ranch i want to tok to entrepreneurs
00:00:03 00:00:06 people are thinking of starting a
00:00:04 00:00:08 business right now and it's because i
00:00:06 00:00:09 keep connecting with so many small
00:00:08 00:00:11 business owners whether you're a
00:00:09 00:00:13 construction person contractor home
00:00:11 00:00:15 service company or i have all these
00:00:13 00:00:17 accountants and financial services folks
00:00:15 00:00:19 and basically what i want to tok about
00:00:17 00:00:22 is what does it actually take to start
00:00:19 00:00:22 and grow and build a real business and
00:00:22 00:00:24 this is just meant to be an
00:00:22 00:00:26 encouragement so this is all about
00:00:24 00:00:28 entrepreneurship and how do you go from
00:00:26 00:00:30 absolutely nothing to building something
00:00:28 00:00:31 significant and i want to hit on some
00:00:30 00:00:33 things because
00:00:31 00:00:35 boy i hear a lot of terrible advice out
00:00:33 00:00:37 there right now when i scroll through
00:00:35 00:00:39 facebook i scroll through instagram all
00:00:37 00:00:40 i see is all these gurus doing lead
00:00:39 00:00:42 magnets and telling you how they're
00:00:40 00:00:44 gonna help you get a business up well
00:00:42 00:00:46 you know the dirty little secret we do
00:00:44 00:00:49 websites we do branding messaging
00:00:46 00:00:51 strategy paid ads we help businesses
00:00:49 00:00:53 create a steady flow of leads and we
00:00:51 00:00:55 help them actually get established and
00:00:53 00:00:56 create something that's fantastik our
00:00:55 00:00:58 goal is to create something over a
00:00:56 00:01:00 couple of years where they're going to
00:00:58 00:01:02 absolutely dominate their local regions
00:01:00 00:01:03 their industry niches or whatever it is
00:01:02 00:01:05 and we get results if you go look at
00:01:03 00:01:07 feedbackrench.com check out all the
00:01:05 00:01:09 websites that we've done we have over 92
00:01:07 00:01:11 five-star reviews because we actually
00:01:09 00:01:14 get it done and there's millionaires
00:01:11 00:01:15 across the twin cities that we've
00:01:14 00:01:18 helped build
00:01:15 00:01:20 because of what we've done in their
00:01:18 00:01:22 space and to help them with sales and
00:01:20 00:01:23 marketing and get them doing that so
00:01:22 00:01:24 i've started two businesses i have
00:01:23 00:01:26 feedback crunch i've been doing this for
00:01:24 00:01:28 about six years before that i have
00:01:26 00:01:30 nuanced financial tax and accounting so
00:01:28 00:01:32 i started it an accounting firm it grew
00:01:30 00:01:33 to be a million dollar multi-million
00:01:32 00:01:35 dollar accounting firm then my partners
00:01:33 00:01:36 and i had disagreement we separated then
00:01:35 00:01:38 i started feedback wrench and we've been
00:01:36 00:01:39 growing consistently we're having a lot
00:01:38 00:01:41 of results
00:01:39 00:01:43 so i'm gonna be putting this on our
00:01:41 00:01:44 podcast if you if you look for us on the
00:01:43 00:01:46 podcast feedback wrench podcast you can
00:01:44 00:01:48 see that here um you can go into youtube
00:01:46 00:01:49 and i don't know i don't really do
00:01:48 00:01:52 anything else but i'm so busy i haven't
00:01:49 00:01:54 been able to create content so anyways i
00:01:52 00:01:56 want to make this because i keep finding
00:01:54 00:01:57 all these folks that want to start
00:01:56 00:01:59 businesses and they get all this
00:01:57 00:02:01 terrible advice there's so much
00:01:59 00:02:02 opportunity for them to actually get it
00:02:01 00:02:04 done and i want to tok about what that
00:02:02 00:02:07 is and so i want to use a quick analogy
00:02:04 00:02:09 right and in a way if you think about it
00:02:07 00:02:11 entrepreneurship or sales is really all
00:02:09 00:02:13 about finding people who have a problem
00:02:11 00:02:15 and providing a solution to that problem
00:02:13 00:02:16 and in a way you're kind of like you
00:02:15 00:02:18 know in mcdonald's you have to get
00:02:16 00:02:20 people to actually buy a hamburger from
00:02:18 00:02:23 you and then you have to actually make
00:02:20 00:02:24 and have a good operating not only the
00:02:23 00:02:26 hamburger but the process of getting a
00:02:24 00:02:28 hamburger needs to be done you have to
00:02:26 00:02:31 have people there you have to have sales
00:02:28 00:02:32 and execution you have to find people
00:02:31 00:02:34 that have the problem and then you
00:02:32 00:02:37 actually have to solve that problem and
00:02:34 00:02:38 whether if you're an accounting firm um
00:02:37 00:02:40 you know you need to find business
00:02:38 00:02:43 owners that need their taxes done
00:02:40 00:02:45 they're stuck in a in a situation they
00:02:43 00:02:47 need their taxes done
00:02:45 00:02:49 they have ugly books and you're gonna
00:02:47 00:02:50 present a better future for them and you
00:02:49 00:02:51 got to intersect with people that have
00:02:50 00:02:53 that problem you need to build
00:02:51 00:02:54 relationships with them you need to be
00:02:53 00:02:56 in proximity of them and once you find
00:02:54 00:02:57 people that have that problem by golly
00:02:56 00:03:00 the next thing you're going to want to
00:02:57 00:03:01 do is show them a solution and have a
00:03:00 00:03:04 have an outcome for it right if you're
00:03:01 00:03:05 doing concrete patios by golly you have
00:03:04 00:03:07 to intersect with new homeowners that
00:03:05 00:03:09 want to put a concrete patio out there
00:03:07 00:03:11 you need to show them the options and
00:03:09 00:03:13 have them and then actually build them
00:03:11 00:03:15 good patios and and so what i want to
00:03:13 00:03:17 tok about here is there's an analogy
00:03:15 00:03:20 where i know a lot of really smart
00:03:17 00:03:21 people who know a ton about business who
00:03:20 00:03:23 have
00:03:21 00:03:25 big degrees a lot of times they're like
00:03:23 00:03:28 cpas they might be
00:03:25 00:03:30 very knowledgeable about business
00:03:28 00:03:32 and yet they never actually go in and
00:03:30 00:03:34 start they never actually do it there's
00:03:32 00:03:36 a number of reasons why one of the
00:03:34 00:03:38 reasons why is because it usually takes
00:03:36 00:03:41 time to build credibility in your own
00:03:38 00:03:43 mind it takes know-how to actually get
00:03:41 00:03:44 the customer you have to believe in
00:03:43 00:03:46 yourself to actually know that you're a
00:03:44 00:03:47 good solution if you don't believe in it
00:03:46 00:03:49 you're never going to do it and not only
00:03:47 00:03:49 that you have to go out and actually
00:03:49 00:03:51 like
00:03:49 00:03:52 do the front-end activity to get there
00:03:51 00:03:54 and
00:03:52 00:03:56 what i want to tok about is to me it's
00:03:54 00:03:57 a lot like fishing i'm going to use a
00:03:56 00:03:59 couple of analogies here and maybe it's
00:03:57 00:04:01 helpful for you so entrepreneurship to
00:03:59 00:04:03 me is there's two of them that i really
00:04:01 00:04:04 like one it's almost like being a
00:04:03 00:04:07 fishing
00:04:04 00:04:08 guide or a fisherman and here's here's a
00:04:07 00:04:10 little story when i was growing up so
00:04:08 00:04:12 i'm 40 years old now and the year is
00:04:10 00:04:14 2022 and when i was growing up i grew up
00:04:12 00:04:16 in the suburbs of minneapolis here and
00:04:14 00:04:18 we had a little lake called man-made
00:04:16 00:04:20 lake and it was basically an old gravel
00:04:18 00:04:23 pit from the 70s that had been filled in
00:04:20 00:04:25 and it was just this rinky-dink little
00:04:23 00:04:27 pond and i loved fishing i had a buddy
00:04:25 00:04:29 who said hey man if we go out there and
00:04:27 00:04:31 we can catch a bunch of fish and we'd go
00:04:29 00:04:33 out to this little pond i i'd get my
00:04:31 00:04:36 little bike this bmx bike that i had or
00:04:33 00:04:39 this really corny looking murray
00:04:36 00:04:42 mountain bike and i'd put my red
00:04:39 00:04:44 what is it the the red wagon behind me
00:04:42 00:04:46 with the black handle i tie it on with a
00:04:44 00:04:49 rope and i'd pull it behind my bike i'd
00:04:46 00:04:51 throw my tackle box way too much tackle
00:04:49 00:04:53 i'd put a fishing rod in there we'd go
00:04:51 00:04:54 out down the road here
00:04:53 00:04:56 in our backyards and i'd go to my
00:04:54 00:04:58 buddy's house we would dig up worms and
00:04:56 00:05:00 we didn't go buy anything we dug our own
00:04:58 00:05:02 worms we'd bring the worms with us and
00:05:00 00:05:03 then i had some tackle and it never
00:05:02 00:05:05 really worked we'd ride our bikes about
00:05:03 00:05:06 a mile and a half down the road to
00:05:05 00:05:09 man-made lake which is now valley park
00:05:06 00:05:11 lake and we would go there and there was
00:05:09 00:05:13 this one spot next to a culvert where if
00:05:11 00:05:15 you put a hook and a bobber you just put
00:05:13 00:05:17 a worm on a hook and put it in there you
00:05:15 00:05:19 would catch sunfish immediately and
00:05:17 00:05:21 growing up it was actually quite a
00:05:19 00:05:22 robust area you would catch big sunfish
00:05:21 00:05:23 it was super fun
00:05:22 00:05:25 and there was
00:05:23 00:05:27 only sunfish like maybe every once in a
00:05:25 00:05:29 while bullhead but we never had the
00:05:27 00:05:30 experience of having real minnesota
00:05:29 00:05:32 fishing if you know anything about lake
00:05:30 00:05:34 fishing here in the twin cities or in
00:05:32 00:05:37 minneapolis or minnesota or up north or
00:05:34 00:05:38 anything it's walleyes and northerns and
00:05:37 00:05:40 big crappie and all this we never knew
00:05:38 00:05:42 any of that all we caught was sunfish
00:05:40 00:05:43 well one day i get invited to go to my
00:05:42 00:05:45 uncle's
00:05:43 00:05:47 um he had a lake
00:05:45 00:05:48 and and while his
00:05:47 00:05:50 his in-laws had a lake and we went to
00:05:48 00:05:52 this lake and i remember me and my
00:05:50 00:05:54 cousin trevor we jumped in this little
00:05:52 00:05:56 paddle boat and trevor really only knew
00:05:54 00:05:59 what he had to stream in his in decorah
00:05:56 00:06:01 iowa he only knew small fish too i only
00:05:59 00:06:03 knew how to catch sunfish i never really
00:06:01 00:06:05 caught anything but sunfish i had my
00:06:03 00:06:06 regular day-to-day catching sunfish i
00:06:05 00:06:08 had no idea
00:06:06 00:06:10 anything about catching anything else we
00:06:08 00:06:12 get in this little paddle boat we go off
00:06:10 00:06:13 and we saw these guys in a boat
00:06:12 00:06:15 and all of a sudden we look up and these
00:06:13 00:06:17 guys are pulling in northerns and
00:06:15 00:06:18 they're like like being a grown up now
00:06:17 00:06:20 and doing a little bit of fish they're
00:06:18 00:06:23 not very big northerns right but to us
00:06:20 00:06:26 they were monsters i was like oh my gosh
00:06:23 00:06:28 i want to catch that so i was like okay
00:06:26 00:06:30 i got glasses now if you didn't notike i
00:06:28 00:06:31 turned 40. i'm old now i can't see
00:06:30 00:06:33 straight and uh
00:06:31 00:06:34 i'm watching these guys and they're
00:06:33 00:06:36 using these
00:06:34 00:06:38 you know they're they're they're casting
00:06:36 00:06:40 out what do you call them um a jig with
00:06:38 00:06:42 a spoon on it right and they're reeling
00:06:40 00:06:44 it in and like oh that's really cool i
00:06:42 00:06:46 have one of those i've never used one
00:06:44 00:06:49 i'll get it the guys disappeared as i
00:06:46 00:06:51 was tying it up and so i tie up my my my
00:06:49 00:06:53 little spinner bait my spinner what do
00:06:51 00:06:54 you call them they got like rubber bands
00:06:53 00:06:56 on them or whatever
00:06:54 00:06:58 and i'm like oh i don't know how to do
00:06:56 00:06:59 this like all right let's try it and i
00:06:58 00:07:01 throw it in once and i get a bunch of
00:06:59 00:07:03 weeds i'm like oh shoot weeds i don't
00:07:01 00:07:04 want that so i put a bobber on the
00:07:03 00:07:06 stupid thing so i throw a bobber out
00:07:04 00:07:08 there and this spoon is sitting on the
00:07:06 00:07:11 bottom nothing happens i didn't catch a
00:07:08 00:07:13 northern that whole time until all of a
00:07:11 00:07:15 sudden i just caught one and i'm like
00:07:13 00:07:17 sweet and it was like it was game
00:07:15 00:07:19 changing it was like the biggest fish i
00:07:17 00:07:20 had ever caught in my entire life okay
00:07:19 00:07:23 so here's what i'm toking about here's
00:07:20 00:07:26 how this relates to business in a way
00:07:23 00:07:28 creating an outcome for a customer or
00:07:26 00:07:30 providing a solution and actually having
00:07:28 00:07:32 that solution
00:07:30 00:07:33 occur is kind of like catching a fish
00:07:32 00:07:35 you're producing fruit you're getting
00:07:33 00:07:38 fish you're you know all the analogies
00:07:35 00:07:40 that the bible uses too like the idea is
00:07:38 00:07:41 you're actually making something happen
00:07:40 00:07:43 and to a degree there's a lot of folks
00:07:41 00:07:45 that sit and watch people they work on a
00:07:43 00:07:46 boat that does fishing they're part of
00:07:45 00:07:48 the crew that does the fishing but they
00:07:46 00:07:51 never actually pull all the pieces
00:07:48 00:07:53 together to make it happen and so what
00:07:51 00:07:55 was interesting for me is i never knew
00:07:53 00:07:57 how to do that now if i were to approach
00:07:55 00:08:00 somebody and say hey can i take you
00:07:57 00:08:02 fishing to go catch some northerns and i
00:08:00 00:08:03 had no experience of actually catching
00:08:02 00:08:06 northerners i didn't know how it is no
00:08:03 00:08:08 do you catch northerns every day no
00:08:06 00:08:10 like i've also i've gone out with wise
00:08:08 00:08:12 competent northern fishermen so so fast
00:08:10 00:08:15 forward to a wise competent northern
00:08:12 00:08:16 fisherman i marry in to a family who uh
00:08:15 00:08:18 earl is just
00:08:16 00:08:20 like the coolest dude ever and they had
00:08:18 00:08:23 a cabin up north and he knows how to
00:08:20 00:08:24 fish and hunt and do everything and he's
00:08:23 00:08:27 got a proper fishing boat and he's got a
00:08:24 00:08:28 proper lake up by alexandria and i go
00:08:27 00:08:30 out with him
00:08:28 00:08:32 i've never had so much fun in my life i
00:08:30 00:08:35 hadn't caught a northern up to this
00:08:32 00:08:37 point for like this is 15
00:08:35 00:08:39 10 15 years later right and we get in
00:08:37 00:08:41 his boat and we start trolling back and
00:08:39 00:08:42 forth with rapula's and the rappos the
00:08:41 00:08:44 shad wraps are going
00:08:42 00:08:46 boom i'm getting hit with northerns that
00:08:44 00:08:48 make that other one that i caught and
00:08:46 00:08:50 the other ones i saw
00:08:48 00:08:53 minuscule they were teeny well
00:08:50 00:08:54 here earl is the guide he knew what to
00:08:53 00:08:56 do
00:08:54 00:08:57 i fished a bunch with earl we don't
00:08:56 00:08:59 catch fish every single time that's why
00:08:57 00:09:01 you call it fishing and not catching
00:08:59 00:09:03 right it's why you call it marketing and
00:09:01 00:09:04 sales not just
00:09:03 00:09:07 like
00:09:04 00:09:09 money transfer right um there there's a
00:09:07 00:09:10 process to this there's a sportsmanship
00:09:09 00:09:13 to it almost and when you're getting
00:09:10 00:09:15 started in entrepreneurship
00:09:13 00:09:16 you have to remember that
00:09:15 00:09:19 if you don't actually know how to go out
00:09:16 00:09:21 and create a solution if you haven't put
00:09:19 00:09:23 together a nice little package a good
00:09:21 00:09:25 solution a good outcome to people you're
00:09:23 00:09:27 never gonna win and you're never gonna
00:09:25 00:09:28 have very much luck so i always
00:09:27 00:09:31 recommend when people are first getting
00:09:28 00:09:34 started find a way to just get some
00:09:31 00:09:36 repetitions and get started by catching
00:09:34 00:09:38 some fish and that usually means
00:09:36 00:09:41 starting to connect and find people who
00:09:38 00:09:43 have that problem because ultimately
00:09:41 00:09:45 when you're in sales you're in
00:09:43 00:09:47 entrepreneurship or business ownership
00:09:45 00:09:48 you're finding people who are stuck in a
00:09:47 00:09:51 problem
00:09:48 00:09:52 and you're gonna provide a better future
00:09:51 00:09:54 moving forward
00:09:52 00:09:56 that the outcome is fantastik for them
00:09:54 00:09:59 so you're finding people that are stuck
00:09:56 00:10:01 here and you're helping them get
00:09:59 00:10:02 there and not only are you helping them
00:10:01 00:10:04 get there but you're gonna make that
00:10:02 00:10:06 process fantastik you're going to make
00:10:04 00:10:07 the onboarding good you're going to make
00:10:06 00:10:08 the process of doing it good you're
00:10:07 00:10:10 going to make sure that the outcome is
00:10:08 00:10:12 of high quality all of those different
00:10:10 00:10:14 things right but ultimately you're
00:10:12 00:10:16 really you're kind of like yoda they are
00:10:14 00:10:18 like luke skywalker and they don't know
00:10:16 00:10:19 how to use the force and you're gonna
00:10:18 00:10:20 show them
00:10:19 00:10:23 how you can make their life better well
00:10:20 00:10:25 in order to do that you're gonna have to
00:10:23 00:10:27 go find people that have that problem
00:10:25 00:10:30 and in the beginning you should probably
00:10:27 00:10:32 be candid about the level of competency
00:10:30 00:10:34 experience or whatever it is
00:10:32 00:10:37 that you have in terms of providing that
00:10:34 00:10:39 solution if you're new by golly go out
00:10:37 00:10:42 and find people with the problem
00:10:39 00:10:43 and give it away for free or do it with
00:10:42 00:10:46 them or offer
00:10:43 00:10:48 offer to do it for cheap get repetitions
00:10:46 00:10:50 under your belt because when you do that
00:10:48 00:10:52 what you're going to find is as you gain
00:10:50 00:10:54 more repetitions and more experience of
00:10:52 00:10:56 actually doing it suddenly you're going
00:10:54 00:10:58 to have the competence inside of you the
00:10:56 00:11:00 confidence that you're competent and
00:10:58 00:11:02 you'll have the belief inside of you
00:11:00 00:11:04 that you can actually do that that you
00:11:02 00:11:06 know you could ask your little buddy to
00:11:04 00:11:07 come alongside you and come fishing with
00:11:06 00:11:08 you and by god
00:11:07 00:11:10 there's a there's a chance we're gonna
00:11:08 00:11:11 catch in northern right but if you would
00:11:10 00:11:12 have went northern fishing with me back
00:11:11 00:11:14 in the day you would never catch
00:11:12 00:11:16 anything right now there's certainly
00:11:14 00:11:17 like when you're creating these
00:11:16 00:11:19 solutions
00:11:17 00:11:21 just like fishing you kind of you don't
00:11:19 00:11:23 need a boat but it's helpful if you have
00:11:21 00:11:25 a boat you don't need a wrap rigging and
00:11:23 00:11:27 a couple reels and rods you don't need
00:11:25 00:11:29 equipment you don't need gear but by
00:11:27 00:11:30 golly it's a lot more helpful and it's
00:11:29 00:11:33 the same thing when it comes to your
00:11:30 00:11:35 marketing your operations your team your
00:11:33 00:11:37 equipment anything that goes into
00:11:35 00:11:39 providing that solution it's not that it
00:11:37 00:11:41 has to be done like you can go catch
00:11:39 00:11:42 northerners with corn out on the corner
00:11:41 00:11:44 but you know it's a lot easier is to
00:11:42 00:11:46 have rapalas in a boat so that you can
00:11:44 00:11:48 actually do it you have a higher success
00:11:46 00:11:51 rate right so you have to concoct an
00:11:48 00:11:53 operation that that actually works and
00:11:51 00:11:55 can get done but in the beginning what
00:11:53 00:11:57 you have to do is at its most core go
00:11:55 00:11:58 out find people with the problem and
00:11:57 00:12:01 we're going to tok about that for just
00:11:58 00:12:04 a second and get repetitions of just
00:12:01 00:12:06 actually helping people get that problem
00:12:04 00:12:08 solved and and do it for cheap or free
00:12:06 00:12:10 now when you're doing it make sure that
00:12:08 00:12:12 you have a google review profile a
00:12:10 00:12:14 google business profile and when you
00:12:12 00:12:17 have those results go
00:12:14 00:12:18 garner a google review that shows that
00:12:17 00:12:20 you actually delivered something you
00:12:18 00:12:22 might even ask them um
00:12:20 00:12:23 what would you do different was was that
00:12:22 00:12:26 a good experience and sometimes if
00:12:23 00:12:28 you're doing a tax return
00:12:26 00:12:29 you know that's one thing if you do your
00:12:28 00:12:30 first you know you go get your general
00:12:29 00:12:33 contractor's license you're doing your
00:12:30 00:12:36 first concrete patio or maybe your first
00:12:33 00:12:38 um roofing job right um there's a couple
00:12:36 00:12:40 of things that you can do you can
00:12:38 00:12:42 partner with other companies that need
00:12:40 00:12:44 outsourced solutions right so it's
00:12:42 00:12:45 really hard for people to get reps if
00:12:44 00:12:47 they don't have any customers you might
00:12:45 00:12:48 be wondering wait a minute i don't
00:12:47 00:12:50 really have anybody that can call that
00:12:48 00:12:52 have that problem how do you get your
00:12:50 00:12:54 first people usually the easiest way to
00:12:52 00:12:57 get started in all of these is to get a
00:12:54 00:12:59 job in that industry right it's much
00:12:57 00:13:01 easier if you go join
00:12:59 00:13:03 a company that looks like the type of
00:13:01 00:13:04 company that you want to
00:13:03 00:13:06 create and you might not even know
00:13:04 00:13:07 exactly what you want to create but if
00:13:06 00:13:09 you want to get started the easiest way
00:13:07 00:13:11 is to get a job in the industry in the
00:13:09 00:13:12 type of company that you want to become
00:13:11 00:13:14 so that you can see what it looks like
00:13:12 00:13:15 to actually be in the business of doing
00:13:14 00:13:17 this that's one way that you can get
00:13:15 00:13:20 initial um
00:13:17 00:13:22 action going another thing is is i would
00:13:20 00:13:24 recommend that you start having coffees
00:13:22 00:13:26 with mentors or people so one of the
00:13:24 00:13:28 things that you should do is call people
00:13:26 00:13:29 that are in the business call people
00:13:28 00:13:31 that are business owners call people
00:13:29 00:13:33 that are potential customers down the
00:13:31 00:13:35 road and say hey i just got a question
00:13:33 00:13:36 for you could i call you for 15 minutes
00:13:35 00:13:37 i have a couple of questions i'm
00:13:36 00:13:39 thinking about starting a business in
00:13:37 00:13:41 the next couple years it's going to be
00:13:39 00:13:42 it's going to be a concrete company i
00:13:41 00:13:43 just want to know what would be
00:13:42 00:13:45 important to you and i'd love to just
00:13:43 00:13:46 pick your brain a little bit i have a
00:13:45 00:13:48 couple of ideas but i'd like some
00:13:46 00:13:50 perspective i know that wisdom comes
00:13:48 00:13:51 from getting perspective you could
00:13:50 00:13:53 provide your insight and i would value
00:13:51 00:13:54 that would you be cool connecting or if
00:13:53 00:13:56 it's somebody that
00:13:54 00:13:57 if it's a competitor just be like hey
00:13:56 00:13:59 you know what i'm thinking of getting a
00:13:57 00:14:01 job in your industry
00:13:59 00:14:03 wink wink thinking of taking over your
00:14:01 00:14:06 industry um i was wondering if i could
00:14:03 00:14:08 call you and just tok about what you do
00:14:06 00:14:09 what you've learned what you're looking
00:14:08 00:14:12 for in good team members and sit down
00:14:09 00:14:13 and take notes and and as you gain more
00:14:12 00:14:14 perspective in all these industries all
00:14:13 00:14:16 of a sudden you're going to be in a
00:14:14 00:14:19 position where you can truly
00:14:16 00:14:20 truly know what it takes and and have
00:14:19 00:14:21 the confidence
00:14:20 00:14:23 externally i just got to make sure i got
00:14:21 00:14:26 a meeting coming up here um have the
00:14:23 00:14:27 confidence inside of you that you can
00:14:26 00:14:28 make those solutions happen because if
00:14:27 00:14:32 you don't believe it inside of you
00:14:28 00:14:33 you're not going to do it but ultimately
00:14:32 00:14:35 there's a time where you got to go out
00:14:33 00:14:37 and you got to make sales and this is
00:14:35 00:14:39 one of the things that people don't get
00:14:37 00:14:41 is there's a lot of smart competent able
00:14:39 00:14:43 people that are inside of corporations
00:14:41 00:14:45 that will never be an entrepreneur will
00:14:43 00:14:48 never be a business owner because they
00:14:45 00:14:50 never actually pull together the pieces
00:14:48 00:14:52 of their own fishing operation they
00:14:50 00:14:54 never go get a boat they never leave the
00:14:52 00:14:56 current boat and fishing operation that
00:14:54 00:14:58 they're on to go out and do some stuff
00:14:56 00:15:00 get their own rowboat in the beginning
00:14:58 00:15:02 and just do some rinky dink one-off some
00:15:00 00:15:03 side gig hustle they never actually do
00:15:02 00:15:04 it
00:15:03 00:15:06 and in a lot of ways
00:15:04 00:15:08 um
00:15:06 00:15:09 they they forget that what it's truly
00:15:08 00:15:11 all about is finding people that are
00:15:09 00:15:12 stuck providing that solution so you got
00:15:11 00:15:14 to go do that go get those coffee
00:15:12 00:15:17 meetings ask great questions so if i was
00:15:14 00:15:19 in front of so i would go get i would
00:15:17 00:15:20 call try and find the business owners of
00:15:19 00:15:22 competitors that would be in your area
00:15:20 00:15:24 or outside and just call me hey you know
00:15:22 00:15:25 what i'm thinking of starting
00:15:24 00:15:28 i know you're busy right now my name is
00:15:25 00:15:29 rob i was wondering could i just
00:15:28 00:15:31 get some perspective from you i know
00:15:29 00:15:32 you're a business owner i'd love to hear
00:15:31 00:15:34 what got you there i wouldn't want to
00:15:32 00:15:36 waste your time could i could i do a 30
00:15:34 00:15:38 minute phone call with you sometime in
00:15:36 00:15:39 the next couple weeks here i just want
00:15:38 00:15:41 to get perspective because i'm thinking
00:15:39 00:15:43 of starting a business what business
00:15:41 00:15:46 owner doesn't help someone like that we
00:15:43 00:15:47 all do i help people like that every
00:15:46 00:15:49 successful business owner i know in
00:15:47 00:15:50 small business and entrepreneur they
00:15:49 00:15:52 would all take that phone call but not
00:15:50 00:15:53 very many people call us and that's why
00:15:52 00:15:55 there's not very many business owners
00:15:53 00:15:56 and that probably tied to the education
00:15:55 00:15:58 system people don't even know it's an
00:15:56 00:16:01 option but um
00:15:58 00:16:03 eventually if you get that activity you
00:16:01 00:16:04 got to connect and be around people if
00:16:03 00:16:06 you found somebody that you think could
00:16:04 00:16:08 be a potential customer down the road
00:16:06 00:16:09 rather than get up on them and slime
00:16:08 00:16:10 them be like hey you know and i want to
00:16:09 00:16:12 sell you something i'm going to fake it
00:16:10 00:16:14 till i make it no go in there and be
00:16:12 00:16:16 like hey i want you'd be a perfect
00:16:14 00:16:17 client someday i'm going to build a
00:16:16 00:16:19 business
00:16:17 00:16:21 i was wondering what would you be
00:16:19 00:16:22 looking for in a solution like this what
00:16:21 00:16:24 do you think would be really important
00:16:22 00:16:26 do you have any insight for me like what
00:16:24 00:16:28 would you tell me to build so it'd be
00:16:26 00:16:29 something you'd actually want to buy or
00:16:28 00:16:32 something a service you'd want to get
00:16:29 00:16:34 and again if i'm thinking of becoming a
00:16:32 00:16:36 remodeler you remodeled your home what
00:16:34 00:16:38 was really important during that process
00:16:36 00:16:40 how would you stack all the all the
00:16:38 00:16:41 benefits that went into what's been your
00:16:40 00:16:43 experience through all this and just
00:16:41 00:16:45 drink it all in so you understand
00:16:43 00:16:46 because ultimately you got to go fishing
00:16:45 00:16:47 um
00:16:46 00:16:49 now the other thing i was just toking
00:16:47 00:16:51 about the guy who really felt like he
00:16:49 00:16:53 didn't have the abilities to create the
00:16:51 00:16:55 cheeseburger to create the hamburger to
00:16:53 00:16:56 create the solution there's certainly
00:16:55 00:16:58 some head knowledge you need to go get
00:16:56 00:17:00 right you need to go learn how to do the
00:16:58 00:17:01 blocking and tackling the simple things
00:17:00 00:17:03 of your business
00:17:01 00:17:04 for accountants and bookkeepers you need
00:17:03 00:17:07 to go learn how to set up quickbooks and
00:17:04 00:17:08 do accounting you need to learn how to
00:17:07 00:17:10 gather documents and fill out tax forms
00:17:08 00:17:11 and file tax forms you need to get
00:17:10 00:17:13 through the legal stuff too but you need
00:17:11 00:17:15 to know how to set up and run a payroll
00:17:13 00:17:17 a lot of times professional services you
00:17:15 00:17:18 need to learn how to actually do the
00:17:17 00:17:20 thing right there's value to that go
00:17:18 00:17:21 learn how to do that but here's the deal
00:17:20 00:17:23 you don't need to go to school for that
00:17:21 00:17:26 you can go to udemy.com you can go to
00:17:23 00:17:27 linkedin learning you can go in and on
00:17:26 00:17:29 youtube you can acquire the skill to
00:17:27 00:17:31 actually do that and then you can give
00:17:29 00:17:33 it a shot and pretend invest in yourself
00:17:31 00:17:35 to learn how to solve problems and to
00:17:33 00:17:36 provide the types of things that are out
00:17:35 00:17:38 there shoot if you're in the food
00:17:36 00:17:39 business start making food and learn how
00:17:38 00:17:42 to do it really well if you're in the in
00:17:39 00:17:43 the remodeling business by golly go sub
00:17:42 00:17:47 contract until you really got it figured
00:17:43 00:17:49 out right um so activity and action and
00:17:47 00:17:50 actually catching those northerns in
00:17:49 00:17:51 that pond and trying to do that is going
00:17:50 00:17:54 to be the first thing
00:17:51 00:17:55 the other thing on this head knowledge
00:17:54 00:17:58 part
00:17:55 00:17:59 is there's a lot of people that
00:17:58 00:18:02 i'm going to switch to analogy of sports
00:17:59 00:18:04 now there's a lot of folks that know all
00:18:02 00:18:07 about basketball or they know all about
00:18:04 00:18:08 football american football um and they
00:18:07 00:18:11 know all the players they know all the
00:18:08 00:18:12 rules they know the the length of the
00:18:11 00:18:14 court they know the length of the
00:18:12 00:18:15 football field they know how everything
00:18:14 00:18:17 works
00:18:15 00:18:19 and then there's a lot of people who
00:18:17 00:18:21 will even go get in really good athletik
00:18:19 00:18:23 shape but there's a huge difference
00:18:21 00:18:26 between knowing about football
00:18:23 00:18:28 knowing how to be a football player and
00:18:26 00:18:29 then actually going out and giving it a
00:18:28 00:18:32 shot
00:18:29 00:18:34 okay in basketball i know a lot of
00:18:32 00:18:35 people that they know everything about
00:18:34 00:18:36 basketball
00:18:35 00:18:39 but
00:18:36 00:18:40 they don't even know how to go shoot
00:18:39 00:18:42 and play around and enjoy it themselves
00:18:40 00:18:44 and enjoy the game and do lay ups and
00:18:42 00:18:46 shoot and run around and then when when
00:18:44 00:18:49 it comes to actually playing a game of
00:18:46 00:18:51 basketball versus just shooting around
00:18:49 00:18:54 they never do it
00:18:51 00:18:56 if you don't go get in the game
00:18:54 00:18:58 and actually try you got to get in the
00:18:56 00:19:01 game
00:18:58 00:19:03 you're not going to ever
00:19:01 00:19:06 make it there's a lot of people that
00:19:03 00:19:07 even work on basketball teams you know
00:19:06 00:19:09 that know everything about basketball
00:19:07 00:19:11 but they they never leave to start their
00:19:09 00:19:13 own team they never start their own
00:19:11 00:19:14 profession they never do so there's a
00:19:13 00:19:16 huge difference and there's a lot of
00:19:14 00:19:18 smart people that know a lot of things
00:19:16 00:19:20 but ultimately there's this part where
00:19:18 00:19:22 you know if you're
00:19:20 00:19:24 going on a journey down a river this is
00:19:22 00:19:26 like an allergy land right and it's a
00:19:24 00:19:28 big
00:19:26 00:19:30 scary river i always think when frodo
00:19:28 00:19:31 and samwise gamgee and the lord of the
00:19:30 00:19:33 rings
00:19:31 00:19:35 they're about to leave the rest of the
00:19:33 00:19:37 group right it's right when uh what's
00:19:35 00:19:40 his name boromir i think or or whatever
00:19:37 00:19:43 the guy betrays frodo tries to take the
00:19:40 00:19:44 ring and sam and frodo frodo tries to
00:19:43 00:19:46 run away
00:19:44 00:19:47 on his own and samwise is like i'm
00:19:46 00:19:49 coming with you
00:19:47 00:19:53 and there's this point where they have
00:19:49 00:19:55 to go in that boat and push off
00:19:53 00:19:57 and they don't know where they're going
00:19:55 00:19:59 they know a mission they have a mission
00:19:57 00:20:01 but they don't know where they're going
00:19:59 00:20:02 and once they push off there's no
00:20:01 00:20:06 turning back
00:20:02 00:20:08 you can't go there is a moment in this
00:20:06 00:20:10 thing where you do that but be careful i
00:20:08 00:20:11 meet a lot of people that they get
00:20:10 00:20:12 everything lined up they get really
00:20:11 00:20:14 smart about their business then they
00:20:12 00:20:16 think they're gonna quit their full-time
00:20:14 00:20:19 job and go replace their income you're
00:20:16 00:20:21 an idiot if you do that don't do that
00:20:19 00:20:22 build up a side gig build up a side
00:20:21 00:20:23 hustle
00:20:22 00:20:25 do something so that you know how to
00:20:23 00:20:26 catch these fish before you go and
00:20:25 00:20:28 probably get to a point where you've got
00:20:26 00:20:30 your own side hopper going and you can
00:20:28 00:20:31 actually make some of those shifts maybe
00:20:30 00:20:33 divest in your full time and go part
00:20:31 00:20:35 time with your main employee maybe make
00:20:33 00:20:37 your main employer your first contract
00:20:35 00:20:37 right um
00:20:37 00:20:39 but
00:20:37 00:20:42 eventually you have to you do have to
00:20:39 00:20:44 push off
00:20:42 00:20:47 and that's fueled by sales
00:20:44 00:20:49 without sales there's nothing to do
00:20:47 00:20:52 eighty percent of all your time your
00:20:49 00:20:55 effort your money your thinking your
00:20:52 00:20:57 activity your words eighty percent of it
00:20:55 00:20:59 needs to be in
00:20:57 00:21:00 front end activity
00:20:59 00:21:01 that's
00:21:00 00:21:03 networking
00:21:01 00:21:05 calling making phone calls call a
00:21:03 00:21:07 hundred people a day that are a
00:21:05 00:21:10 potential customer and this is what i
00:21:07 00:21:12 really want to hammer on without sales
00:21:10 00:21:15 your plane is grounded
00:21:12 00:21:18 okay i love the analogy that sales and
00:21:15 00:21:20 marketing are the two engines on a plane
00:21:18 00:21:23 that create thrust and lift
00:21:20 00:21:25 you can have a cool business plan a
00:21:23 00:21:27 great brand a cool website
00:21:25 00:21:29 all sorts of operations equipment you
00:21:27 00:21:32 know you can have sweet cameras and you
00:21:29 00:21:34 can have all the gear in the world
00:21:32 00:21:38 you can even know everything but until
00:21:34 00:21:40 you put gasoline in those engines and
00:21:38 00:21:43 get going you will stay grounded and i
00:21:40 00:21:45 know too many business owners that sit
00:21:43 00:21:46 around waiting for their engines to turn
00:21:45 00:21:49 on
00:21:46 00:21:51 what fuels your business is sales and
00:21:49 00:21:53 marketing now marketing we do digital
00:21:51 00:21:55 marketing do online marketing there's so
00:21:53 00:21:58 much you can do right now in digital but
00:21:55 00:22:01 you can't negate the in person or video
00:21:58 00:22:03 based people based side of sales
00:22:01 00:22:05 if you want to get a business going
00:22:03 00:22:08 here's what you must do you must
00:22:05 00:22:10 prospect you must get in front of as
00:22:08 00:22:12 many people as you can and create a
00:22:10 00:22:14 mathematikal inevitability that you will
00:22:12 00:22:16 have success the insurance business
00:22:14 00:22:18 teaches this big time okay in the
00:22:16 00:22:19 insurance business the first thing they
00:22:18 00:22:21 do if you ever
00:22:19 00:22:23 northwestern mutual guys
00:22:21 00:22:24 brace yourselves
00:22:23 00:22:26 in the insurance or the multi-level
00:22:24 00:22:28 marketing people this is what they do
00:22:26 00:22:29 you recruit somebody they make you take
00:22:28 00:22:32 a spreadsheet and they call it your
00:22:29 00:22:33 project 300. you write down every person
00:22:32 00:22:35 you've ever met or intersected with or
00:22:33 00:22:38 have a relationship with you write that
00:22:35 00:22:41 down and then you systematikally
00:22:38 00:22:43 call them and present to them the idea
00:22:41 00:22:45 that you could possibly do their
00:22:43 00:22:48 insurance and investments right now on
00:22:45 00:22:50 your end if you're doing b2b it's a
00:22:48 00:22:51 little bit different um if you're doing
00:22:50 00:22:54 home services it's a little bit
00:22:51 00:22:56 different you but there's video versions
00:22:54 00:22:58 of this but you can call right i have a
00:22:56 00:23:02 roofing guy
00:22:58 00:23:05 or a siding guy or even a remodeler or a
00:23:02 00:23:07 junk cleaning you can do b2b commercial
00:23:05 00:23:09 work you can call in every contractor
00:23:07 00:23:11 and say hey next time you need a roof
00:23:09 00:23:13 get me in on it i'll i'll do a better
00:23:11 00:23:14 roof at a better rate because i'm hungry
00:23:13 00:23:16 and i want to make this happen so make
00:23:14 00:23:18 sure you call me i know you have a guy
00:23:16 00:23:20 but anytime you need more capacity for
00:23:18 00:23:23 your roofing when you're doing new
00:23:20 00:23:25 construction call me like what what
00:23:23 00:23:27 builder is not going to give that a shot
00:23:25 00:23:29 when you confidently call in and
00:23:27 00:23:31 professionally engage in these people so
00:23:29 00:23:33 i'm not saying do the project 300 like
00:23:31 00:23:35 that and then you kind of slip
00:23:33 00:23:38 you know slough around no you're going
00:23:35 00:23:41 to professionally call on businesses and
00:23:38 00:23:42 people and corporations and potential
00:23:41 00:23:44 people that are stuck here you know
00:23:42 00:23:46 they're stuck there right and you're
00:23:44 00:23:49 going to provide them a solution or an
00:23:46 00:23:51 opportunity to come and and possibly do
00:23:49 00:23:53 business with you but be direct don't
00:23:51 00:23:54 beat around the bush don't you know if
00:23:53 00:23:55 you can get coffee and maybe there's
00:23:54 00:23:57 something like you do want to have
00:23:55 00:23:58 coffee meetings get to know people but
00:23:57 00:24:01 you need to be purposeful in it they
00:23:58 00:24:02 don't want their time wasted if there's
00:24:01 00:24:05 a reason why you're calling them get
00:24:02 00:24:07 about it call them hey
00:24:05 00:24:09 i'm rob i do websites and marketing i'm
00:24:07 00:24:11 right down the road from you i'm not
00:24:09 00:24:14 sure if you have a really good like lead
00:24:11 00:24:15 generation system and website and video
00:24:14 00:24:16 i'd love an opportunity to see if
00:24:15 00:24:18 there's some way i could add some value
00:24:16 00:24:20 would you be interested if i shot you an
00:24:18 00:24:21 email or anything like that could
00:24:20 00:24:23 would you be interested in toking about
00:24:21 00:24:24 that
00:24:23 00:24:25 yeah
00:24:24 00:24:27 like that's the worst that's going to
00:24:25 00:24:29 happen then boom i'm on to the other one
00:24:27 00:24:31 so the idea is you have to get that
00:24:29 00:24:33 front-end activity there's a movie out
00:24:31 00:24:36 there called the the founder
00:24:33 00:24:37 and it's the story of ray kroc
00:24:36 00:24:39 the person who took the mcdonald's
00:24:37 00:24:41 brothers and mcdonald's hamburgers
00:24:39 00:24:43 upward and forward into the stratosphere
00:24:41 00:24:44 and made mcdonald's what it is and he
00:24:43 00:24:46 was a
00:24:44 00:24:49 he was tenacious
00:24:46 00:24:50 he was a he was a honey badger man he he
00:24:49 00:24:52 was a wolverine
00:24:50 00:24:54 and those two animals are two animals
00:24:52 00:24:56 that i've really been thinking about
00:24:54 00:24:57 lately because they are absolutely
00:24:56 00:25:00 tenacious they don't require a lot of
00:24:57 00:25:03 food they're small they're scrappy they
00:25:00 00:25:05 get things done that that is like the
00:25:03 00:25:06 tone of how an entrepreneur needs to
00:25:05 00:25:09 think you're like a wolverine or a honey
00:25:06 00:25:11 badger you hit harder than your size you
00:25:09 00:25:13 make the most out of every calorie you
00:25:11 00:25:15 have you know how to barrel down for the
00:25:13 00:25:18 winter look at a wolverine they run
00:25:15 00:25:20 miles and miles you do what it takes to
00:25:18 00:25:22 get it done you'll eat bone if you have
00:25:20 00:25:23 to but you'll kill a deer if you can
00:25:22 00:25:24 like no matter what when it comes to
00:25:23 00:25:26 entrepreneurship you need to be a
00:25:24 00:25:27 wolverine that's a new thing i got you
00:25:26 00:25:29 got to be a wolverine go watch the
00:25:27 00:25:32 documentary on wolverine they're insane
00:25:29 00:25:34 fight off bears kill they'll eat
00:25:32 00:25:37 anything and everything you need to be
00:25:34 00:25:39 like that right but in ray crock's movie
00:25:37 00:25:41 what he toks about when you watch what
00:25:39 00:25:44 he did is he took that model and he just
00:25:41 00:25:46 persistently brought it forward he was
00:25:44 00:25:48 selling milkshake machines to
00:25:46 00:25:49 restaurants and when he saw that model
00:25:48 00:25:51 he has a quote in there about
00:25:49 00:25:53 persistence
00:25:51 00:25:55 if you persistently do the front-end
00:25:53 00:25:57 activity and persistently get in front
00:25:55 00:25:59 of enough people and
00:25:57 00:26:01 persistently find out if they have the
00:25:59 00:26:03 problem and persistently present
00:26:01 00:26:05 yourself as a solution to the problem if
00:26:03 00:26:07 you do that persistently enough and with
00:26:05 00:26:10 enough volume you will win
00:26:07 00:26:12 you cannot keep it down you cannot stop
00:26:10 00:26:13 it you will have a successful business
00:26:12 00:26:16 and when you
00:26:13 00:26:17 buckle into that
00:26:16 00:26:20 you'll succeed
00:26:17 00:26:24 when you believe that at its minimum
00:26:20 00:26:29 you become somebody who absolutely makes
00:26:24 00:26:29 it happen you take it you go take
00:26:29 00:26:35 the opportunity you go out and you
00:26:32 00:26:38 obtain the clients you find them you
00:26:35 00:26:40 call them you go to network meetings you
00:26:38 00:26:42 go to their house i don't care whatever
00:26:40 00:26:44 it takes
00:26:42 00:26:46 you go get them like a wolverine and
00:26:44 00:26:48 you'll eat anything that comes your way
00:26:46 00:26:51 and get reps and build reputation you
00:26:48 00:26:54 will get it done but ray kroc says that
00:26:51 00:26:55 nothing can stop persistence
00:26:54 00:26:58 nothing
00:26:55 00:27:02 and so i think you don't have to be
00:26:58 00:27:04 low value cold call all of that
00:27:02 00:27:07 but at minimum you can
00:27:04 00:27:09 and it will create activity it will fill
00:27:07 00:27:12 and put gasoline and create some lift in
00:27:09 00:27:14 the airplane of your business it is the
00:27:12 00:27:16 thing that allows you to it's like going
00:27:14 00:27:18 on the water for fishing right if you go
00:27:16 00:27:20 out on the water and make enough casts
00:27:18 00:27:22 if you're stupid casting you will
00:27:20 00:27:23 actually catch something you will catch
00:27:22 00:27:25 something
00:27:23 00:27:27 on accident
00:27:25 00:27:29 at minimum at best you'll get good at
00:27:27 00:27:31 this so if you're starting a business
00:27:29 00:27:32 that's the attitude you have to have
00:27:31 00:27:33 you're not going to sit back and just
00:27:32 00:27:36 let this occur to you you're going to go

00:27:46 00:27:52 bureaucracy jobs and big corporations
00:27:49 00:27:56 all of that that's not the solution go
00:27:52 00:27:58 out and create create value go find
00:27:56 00:27:59 people that are stuck and provide
00:27:58 00:28:01 solutions you can make great livings
