00:01:58 00:02:03 they don't niche down enough you really
00:02:01 00:02:05 want to niche it down as much as
00:02:03 00:02:08 possible it's not enough to say your
00:02:05 00:02:11 niche is women 35 to 50 that's a whole
00:02:08 00:02:13 broad a little bit better is saying
00:02:11 00:02:15 mom's 35 to 50
00:02:13 00:02:18 still way too broad a little bit better
00:02:15 00:02:21 upper-class mom's 35 to 50 still too
00:02:18 00:02:23 broad you want to get so specific that
00:02:21 00:02:25 it's almost ridiculous I want to say
00:02:23 00:02:28 something like upper-class vegan yoga
00:02:25 00:02:31 moms 35 to 50 who buy from Lululemon who
00:02:28 00:02:33 own a pair of Lululemon pants that's
00:02:31 00:02:36 specific in fact I'd even take it one
00:02:33 00:02:38 step farther and create an avatar now
00:02:36 00:02:40 I'm not toking about that old movie I
00:02:38 00:02:41 guess it's not that old but that movie
00:02:40 00:02:45 Avatar I'm toking about create a
00:02:41 00:02:49 persona create a person create sue and
00:02:45 00:02:51 say hey sue is my ideal customer she is
00:02:49 00:02:53 the number one customer I'd like to have
00:02:51 00:02:56 in my company every time you create an
00:02:53 00:02:58 Instagram post a Pinterest app you think
00:02:56 00:02:59 about sue would sue like this and if sue
00:02:58 00:03:01 wouldn't like it don't do it and now you
00:02:59 00:03:04 can create a few different avatars you
00:03:01 00:03:05 can create one that represents a few
00:03:04 00:03:07 different types of people within your
00:03:05 00:03:09 brand for instance my dance clothing
00:03:07 00:03:11 company we have one Avatar that is a
00:03:09 00:03:13 dance studio owner another avatar that's
00:03:11 00:03:15 a dance mom and another one that would
00:03:13 00:03:16 be a dance teacher and all three of them
00:03:15 00:03:19 have slightly different personalities
00:03:16 00:03:21 we're trying to target each one of them
00:03:19 00:03:23 differently when we're doing Instagram
00:03:21 00:03:26 ads or Pinterest ads but creating an
00:03:23 00:03:27 avatar will really help your online
00:03:26 00:03:30 marketing methods designing your website
00:03:27 00:03:33 literally everything you do so the next
00:03:30 00:03:35 up in a related tangent is create a try
00:03:33 00:03:37 what you want to do and to take this
00:03:35 00:03:39 even a step further is create your
00:03:37 00:03:41 thousand true fans now this is an old
00:03:39 00:03:44 Kevin Kelly artikle I believe and he
00:03:41 00:03:47 said if you could get a thousand people
00:03:44 00:03:48 that just love you love your brand love
00:03:47 00:03:51 who you are your product whatever it is
00:03:48 00:03:54 and are willing to give you $100 once a
00:03:51 00:03:55 year just $100 and think about that
00:03:54 00:03:57 that's not that crazy there's people
00:03:55 00:03:59 that I follow that I would give $100 for
00:03:57 00:04:00 everything that they do so let's say
00:03:59 00:04:03 you've had a thousand people that would
00:04:00 00:04:06 each give you $100 you could easily make
00:04:03 00:04:08 $100,000 a year so you want to do is
00:04:06 00:04:11 think of who would your thousand true
00:04:08 00:04:13 friend fans be would they be vegan yoga
00:04:11 00:04:16 moms and if so keep that in the back
00:04:13 00:04:18 your head and what this ends up doing is
00:04:16 00:04:20 it ends up creating this group that
00:04:18 00:04:23 would literally get a tattoo of your
00:04:20 00:04:24 product on their shoulder now this is
00:04:23 00:04:26 just a temporary tattoo but this is one
00:04:24 00:04:26 of my companies this is performance and
00:04:26 00:04:29 nut butter
00:04:26 00:04:31 it's a company that I have we make a nut
00:04:29 00:04:33 butter product obviously a macadamia
00:04:31 00:04:35 coconut cashew nut butter product and
00:04:33 00:04:38 this is one of the people that I sent
00:04:35 00:04:40 them a free jar a long time ago and they
00:04:38 00:04:42 love the product so much they paid to
00:04:40 00:04:45 get a temporary tattoo made put on their
00:04:42 00:04:48 shoulder and go run a race so thank you
00:04:45 00:04:50 for that that was awesome
00:04:48 00:04:52 and like it's people like that that make
00:04:50 00:04:54 having a business so amazing and you
00:04:52 00:04:57 better bet he is at the Spartan Race
00:04:54 00:04:58 telling other people about performance
00:04:57 00:05:01 nut butter I mean if he likes it enough
00:04:58 00:05:02 to put a tattoo on his shoulder he likes
00:05:01 00:05:04 it enough to tok about it and spread
00:05:02 00:05:06 the message you want to get fans like
00:05:04 00:05:08 that so if you're interested in this
00:05:06 00:05:10 kind of thing I got two books to
00:05:08 00:05:13 recommend to you the first is primal
00:05:10 00:05:14 branding very important it toks a lot
00:05:13 00:05:16 about how you can create a brand that
00:05:14 00:05:18 people really want to stand behind and
00:05:16 00:05:20 one of the points I'll just pick out
00:05:18 00:05:22 from the book is you need to have an
00:05:20 00:05:25 us-versus-them mentality your product is
00:05:22 00:05:27 not for everyone in fact you want to say
00:05:25 00:05:30 anybody that likes this kind of a thing
00:05:27 00:05:32 is our enemy and that creates this
00:05:30 00:05:34 primal tribal nature so let me give you
00:05:32 00:05:37 an example of this with performance nut
00:05:34 00:05:40 butter if you like sugar and candy and
00:05:37 00:05:43 all junk food you are the enemy like you
00:05:40 00:05:45 get away from us it's disgusting I'm
00:05:43 00:05:46 sorry for anyone watching this but
00:05:45 00:05:48 that's the mentality of the brand is
00:05:46 00:05:51 we're a healthy food we're about
00:05:48 00:05:53 performance if you're lazy sitting on
00:05:51 00:05:55 the couch eating candy bars you're the
00:05:53 00:05:58 ops you're not one of us you need to
00:05:55 00:06:00 create that polarity right there that's
00:05:58 00:06:02 why certain presidents win and they're
00:06:00 00:06:05 able to they're able to polarize
00:06:02 00:06:07 audiences if everybody likes you then
00:06:05 00:06:09 nobody loves you you want to be someone
00:06:07 00:06:11 that someone is willing to stand on the
00:06:09 00:06:13 rooftops and shout about that also means
00:06:11 00:06:14 people are probably going to hate your
00:06:13 00:06:16 brand enough about that tribes is
00:06:14 00:06:18 another great book I'll let you read
00:06:16 00:06:21 both these books it's all about how to
00:06:18 00:06:23 create tripes obviously so the next up
00:06:21 00:06:26 is number three influencers and this is
00:06:23 00:06:30 the age of social influencers our brains
00:06:26 00:06:32 are wired they're wired to listen to
00:06:30 00:06:34 leaders that's just where humans for
00:06:32 00:06:35 primates that's part of what it is now
00:06:34 00:06:38 the interesting thing about the internet
00:06:35 00:06:40 is these leaders these thought leaders
00:06:38 00:06:40 are down on Instagram they're now on
00:06:40 00:06:42 Twitter
00:06:40 00:06:44 they're now on all these locations and
00:06:42 00:06:47 using influence or marketing is a great
00:06:44 00:06:49 way to leverage that you can either send
00:06:47 00:06:51 free products and ask people to post
00:06:49 00:06:54 about it or you can do paid influence or
00:06:51 00:06:56 marketing both are great options be
00:06:54 00:06:57 careful when paying people a lot of
00:06:56 00:07:00 people will try to jack up the prices
00:06:57 00:07:01 I'd say start off sending out free
00:07:00 00:07:03 products to people definitely message
00:07:01 00:07:05 them first and see if they're willing to
00:07:03 00:07:08 do a post in exchange it's a great way
00:07:05 00:07:10 to get the the word out there and to be
00:07:08 00:07:12 honest if they're not willing to do it
00:07:10 00:07:13 for free it might not be the best place
00:07:12 00:07:16 to start you can definitely make a lot
00:07:13 00:07:18 of money doing paid but I'd say get your
00:07:16 00:07:21 feet wet with just a free product next
00:07:18 00:07:23 up is YouTube and I think this is very
00:07:21 00:07:25 very powerful in fact it's so powerful
00:07:23 00:07:28 you're watching a YouTube video right
00:07:25 00:07:29 now and I'm willing to bet you trust me
00:07:28 00:07:31 a little bit more than if you were just
00:07:29 00:07:33 reading an artikle when you just read an
00:07:31 00:07:36 artikle there's no personality behind it
00:07:33 00:07:39 once again we're primates our brains are
00:07:36 00:07:41 wired to listen to people to listen to
00:07:39 00:07:43 the way they tok and say hey I trust
00:07:41 00:07:44 that person or I don't and there's some
00:07:43 00:07:46 people watching this video that don't
00:07:44 00:07:48 trust me but a lot of people are
00:07:46 00:07:50 probably realizing that I'm spending my
00:07:48 00:07:51 free time making free content and
00:07:50 00:07:53 they're going to listen to me same is
00:07:51 00:07:56 true for your brand your company
00:07:53 00:07:57 whatever your website is maybe you have
00:07:56 00:07:58 a website where you sell peanut butter
00:07:57 00:08:01 that's an example I've been using
00:07:58 00:08:03 recently and with your website you have
00:08:01 00:08:05 YouTube videos where you tok about the
00:08:03 00:08:06 best peanut butters and you have reviews
00:08:05 00:08:09 of peanut butters you're able to get
00:08:06 00:08:11 trust and when you say oh my gosh this
00:08:09 00:08:14 is the best peanut butter I've ever had
00:08:11 00:08:15 you guys need to buy it by the way you
00:08:14 00:08:17 can buy it down below here's a link
00:08:15 00:08:19 they're gonna buy it from you because
00:08:17 00:08:21 they've listened to you they like you
00:08:19 00:08:24 they would rather give you their money
00:08:21 00:08:27 than some big brands somewhere else so
00:08:24 00:08:31 YouTube is a great way not only to
00:08:27 00:08:34 create some trust but also to like build
00:08:31 00:08:36 a all around brand it also is a great
00:08:34 00:08:38 way to get content marketing it's so
00:08:36 00:08:40 much easier to rank a YouTube video high
00:08:38 00:08:43 up in YouTube than it is an artikle high
00:08:40 00:08:46 up in Google YouTube I believe last I
00:08:43 00:08:48 checked is the number two most popular
00:08:46 00:08:50 search engine it goes Google YouTube and
00:08:48 00:08:53 then Bing and you know who uses Bing
00:08:50 00:08:54 anymore right so more people are using
00:08:53 00:08:55 YouTube
00:08:54 00:08:57 being almost as many people are
00:08:55 00:09:00 searching for things on YouTube as they
00:08:57 00:09:03 are on Google and the interesting thing
00:09:00 00:09:05 is there is like one one-thousandth as
00:09:03 00:09:06 many YouTube videos is there our blog
00:09:05 00:09:08 artikles so it's so much easier to rank
00:09:06 00:09:09 and all you need is a halfway decent
00:09:08 00:09:12 camera
00:09:09 00:09:13 and some decent audio you don't even
00:09:12 00:09:15 need that you could probably just use
00:09:13 00:09:18 your phone not gonna belabor this point
00:09:15 00:09:21 too much but it builds trust and you can
00:09:18 00:09:23 make a statement you can also get a lot
00:09:21 00:09:26 of easy traffic to your website so
00:09:23 00:09:29 number five product listing add Google
00:09:26 00:09:30 Shopping ads if you have the money you
00:09:29 00:09:33 have a little bit of a budget to spend I
00:09:30 00:09:35 would start here at least at this point
00:09:33 00:09:37 in my life I would start here it depends
00:09:35 00:09:40 on what your product is but just to let
00:09:37 00:09:41 you know so Google Shopping is right
00:09:40 00:09:43 here if you search for something in
00:09:41 00:09:44 Google and you see all the different
00:09:43 00:09:46 items that come up with price tags
00:09:44 00:09:48 underneath that that is Google Shopping
00:09:46 00:09:49 and why is this so powerful you might be
00:09:48 00:09:51 wondering well it's so powerful because
00:09:49 00:09:53 it shows a picture of the item so
00:09:51 00:09:55 someone knows before they click what
00:09:53 00:09:57 they're clicking on and it shows a price
00:09:55 00:09:59 so once again someone knows this is
00:09:57 00:10:01 about how much it's gonna cost and on
00:09:59 00:10:02 top of that if someone's clicking on
00:10:01 00:10:04 that it's because they're ready to buy a
00:10:02 00:10:06 product or they're much more willing to
00:10:04 00:10:09 buy a product as opposed to a text ad
00:10:06 00:10:11 just a regular AdWords text ad which
00:10:09 00:10:12 people might be interested in more
00:10:11 00:10:14 information so I believe I have yellow
00:10:12 00:10:17 dance pants searched for right here now
00:10:14 00:10:18 if I do a text ad someone might just be
00:10:17 00:10:20 interested in learning more about what
00:10:18 00:10:22 types of yellow dance pants are they
00:10:20 00:10:24 might not have that buyer intent with a
00:10:22 00:10:26 product listing add there's a much
00:10:24 00:10:28 higher buyer intent because the price
00:10:26 00:10:29 because the image they picked up your
00:10:28 00:10:32 image out of all five of the other
00:10:29 00:10:35 images so product listing ads are very
00:10:32 00:10:37 very powerful next up and this is I
00:10:35 00:10:39 think the most important tip and you may
00:10:37 00:10:41 already know this to some degree but I
00:10:39 00:10:44 just want to reiterate this to you so
00:10:41 00:10:47 important keep learning whatever you do
00:10:44 00:10:48 keep learning it's this this is what's
00:10:47 00:10:50 going to separate you from your
00:10:48 00:10:51 competitors the fact that you're
00:10:50 00:10:53 watching this YouTube video the fact
00:10:51 00:10:55 that you're excited to learn about
00:10:53 00:10:57 e-commerce this is the difference
00:10:55 00:10:58 between I mean really us and the animals
00:10:57 00:11:00 in a lot of ways but this is the
00:10:58 00:11:01 difference between you and anyone else
00:11:00 00:11:03 out there that's not being successful if

00:11:51 00:11:55 segmenting your list and you know what
00:11:53 00:11:57 it's really easy to say this I know it's
00:11:55 00:11:59 hard to do it I've only recently started
00:11:57 00:12:01 doing it and it's already paid off and
00:11:59 00:12:03 very happy I'm doing it so here's some
00:12:01 00:12:06 segments new emails so anytime someone
00:12:03 00:12:07 signs up for your lead magnet or signs
00:12:06 00:12:09 up on your website but hasn't purchased
00:12:07 00:12:12 yet you put them in one bucket and the
00:12:09 00:12:13 goal of that bucket is to sell them so
00:12:12 00:12:16 maybe you have a discount ladder maybe
00:12:13 00:12:18 you say hey I saw you just signed up
00:12:16 00:12:21 here is your free DIY guide or here's
00:12:18 00:12:23 your free checklist then you wait a few
00:12:21 00:12:24 days let them know about your products
00:12:23 00:12:26 and then you say hey here's a 10% off
00:12:24 00:12:28 coupon if they don't buy that maybe you
00:12:26 00:12:30 wait a few days tell them here's a 15%
00:12:28 00:12:32 off coupon wait a few days and if they
00:12:30 00:12:34 still don't buy maybe you stop there or
00:12:32 00:12:36 you send them a 20% off coupon if they
00:12:34 00:12:38 still haven't purchased anything you
00:12:36 00:12:39 walk away but this will get some people
00:12:38 00:12:41 that are unfamiliar with your brand
00:12:39 00:12:44 purchasing from you and making them into
00:12:41 00:12:46 customers which is the second bucket so
00:12:44 00:12:48 this is someone that's purchased from
00:12:46 00:12:50 you but maybe hasn't we're done a repeat
00:12:48 00:12:51 purchase yet you want to treat them
00:12:50 00:12:53 different they're already know about
00:12:51 00:12:54 your brand they're already well aware of
00:12:53 00:12:57 what your company stands for they like
00:12:54 00:12:58 your product hopefully and the key is
00:12:57 00:13:01 trying to get them to come back and
00:12:58 00:13:03 reorder it's so much easier to get a
00:13:01 00:13:04 customer to come back and reorder than
00:13:03 00:13:06 it is to get someone you've never
00:13:04 00:13:08 purchased from you before to try to
00:13:06 00:13:10 place an order that's scary
00:13:08 00:13:12 people don't like scary situations and
00:13:10 00:13:14 buying and putting your credit card
00:13:12 00:13:16 online is a little bit scary once
00:13:14 00:13:18 someone's already jumped off that cliff
00:13:16 00:13:20 once and they know that it's safe
00:13:18 00:13:22 they're more likely to do it again there
00:13:20 00:13:25 realize oh this is a good experience the
00:13:22 00:13:26 last segment we had is VIPs these are
00:13:25 00:13:29 people that either spent a lot of money
00:13:26 00:13:32 with your company or they make repeat
00:13:29 00:13:33 after repeat purchase so you want to
00:13:32 00:13:37 treat them different if maybe they spent
00:13:33 00:13:38 $250 last time with you you want to send
00:13:37 00:13:40 them special emails you want to reach
00:13:38 00:13:41 out and say hey you haven't purchased
00:13:40 00:13:44 again in three months or six months
00:13:41 00:13:45 whatever your buying cycle is what can
00:13:44 00:13:47 we do to get you back in here maybe send
00:13:45 00:13:49 them coupons maybe it's just sending
00:13:47 00:13:52 them a handwritten letter or a
00:13:49 00:13:54 handwritten email the next thing I want
00:13:52 00:13:56 to tok about here is abandoned cart a
00:13:54 00:13:58 lot of people don't do this very simple
00:13:56 00:14:00 when someone goes to your website and
00:13:58 00:14:01 they start to purchase and they get
00:14:00 00:14:03 distracted but maybe they have a phone
00:14:01 00:14:05 call or one of a hundred things send
00:14:03 00:14:06 them abandoned cart email and you can
00:14:05 00:14:08 send them just one email saying hey by
00:14:06 00:14:09 the way I saw that you forgot this or
00:14:08 00:14:11 you could send them a coupon a lot of
00:14:09 00:14:12 people will send abandoned cart email
00:14:11 00:14:14 just saying hey I know you forgot about
00:14:12 00:14:16 this maybe you should come back and then
00:14:14 00:14:18 if they still haven't purchased the next
00:14:16 00:14:20 day doing a five or ten percent off
00:14:18 00:14:23 coupon and so on and so on until they
00:14:20 00:14:26 finally purchased so that is all seven
00:14:23 00:14:27 of my tips right there make sure if you
