Automate Tax Rates on Shopify
Hi Shopify sellers, it's Kexin from LedgerGurus. Today, I'm going to talk about sales tax settings in your Shopify store. I know it's not the most exciting topic, but it's essential to be compliant with sales tax regulations. Setting it up correctly can save you a lot of money. So, let's dive into the content.
Sales Tax with Shopify:
1. Who's collecting sales tax?
If you're selling on Shopify, every sale that goes through Shopify is your responsibility to collect and remit sales tax. Shopify is not like Amazon or other marketplaces where you can hand over the responsibility to them.
2. How to turn on sales tax settings?
There are five things you need to do:
- Enter the places you want Shopify to collect sales tax from
- Automatically calculate tax on shipping
- Make sure all taxable products are collecting sales tax
- Add all your warehouse locations
- Add information for exempt customers
Details on the Five Steps:
1. Enter the Places You Want Shopify to Collect Sales Tax:
- Go to Settings -> Taxes -> US Store
- Add all the states where you want Shopify to collect sales tax
- If you are using the new interface, enter your sales tax license and the state without the zip code
2. Automatically Calculate Tax on Shipping:
- Check the box that says automatically calculate tax on shipping
- For states that don't tax shipping, add a tax override for shipping in that specific state
3. Make Sure All Taxable Products are Collecting Sales Tax:
- Go to each product -> edit each variant -> check the box that says charge tax on this product for taxable products
- Don't check the box for non-taxable products like gift cards
4. Add All Your Warehouse Locations:
- Go to Settings -> Locations -> add all the warehouse locations
- This is important for sales tax because some states are origin sourcing and some are destination sourcing
- The rates are different, and where to look for those rates is also different
5. Add Information for Exempt Customers:
- Go to Customers -> edit this customer's information -> check the box to say this is an exempt customer
- Give a reason on why this is exempt
Setting up sales tax correctly is essential to be compliant with sales tax regulations. Follow these five steps to make sure you are on the right path.
