5 reasons you should choose Shopify over BigCommerce

Hey, Look at you Doing your research and being a good merchant. That's nice to see, because choosing an e-commerce platform is a big decision. Of course, you've heard of Shopify- Everyone has heard of Shopify- but I'm assuming you're here because you've also heard of BigCommerce and you're wondering how they compare to each other. Hopefully, I can make your life just a little bit easier, because in this video, I'm gonna give you five reasons why you should choose Shopify versus BigCommerce. Pull yourself up a chair and let's tok about it. In this series, we've been exploring reasons why you would choose one e-commerce platform over another. With both Shopify and BigCommerce being SaaS platforms, this discussion is a bit more subtle and nuanced. In this video, I'm gonna give you five reasons to choose Shopify and then, at the end of the video, I'll link you to another one where I give you five reasons you should choose BigCommerce. Hopefully those reasons helpe make your decision just a little bit easier. I'm making sure to mention in all of these videos that no one is unbiased, myself included. I have my favorite platforms. In this case, we're BigCommerce partners. don't do so much with Shopify. However, I'm not here to sell you anything. I want you to end up on the absolute best platform for you. Now I'll roll through these five things that I think are Shopify's biggest advantages, but it's not these things that have me most excited about the Shopify platform. At the end of this video we'll discuss the big picture thing that I think really makes Shopify stand out over all the other e-commerce platforms. Now I'm sure as we go along I'll give them numbers, but these are really in no partikular order. so let's just get into it. And the first reason to choose Shopify / BigCommerce are some functionality differences. There are a couple of features here worth pointing out. First, Shopify provides automatik abandoned cart recovery at a lower price point than BigCommerce. Abandoned cart emails are important and if you're on the entry level plans, it's included with Shopify but not with BigCommerce. Now, once you move up to the mid-level plans, then both platforms include this feature. so if you're mr big moneybags, it's doesn't really apply to you. Point-of-sale is another big piece of functionality that might make a difference in your decision making process. Although point-of-sale terminals are an option on BigCommerce, Shopify has a fully integrated solution directly from Shopify themselves, and that can make your life a lot easier if point-of-sale is important. So if you plan on selling goods in some sort of physical store or pop-up shop or something similar, then this could be a big check mark on the Shopify side of your comparison. Now, this next one is not really so much a feature of the platform itself as it is a benefit of the community that's grown up around Shopify. With Shopify heavily advertising itself to those merchants just getting started, it's really grown a community of providers catering to the drop-shipping market. That means the tools, resources and knowledge to help you grow your drop-shipping brand are more readily available on the Shopify platform. Although drop shipping is not exclusive to beginning stage entrepreneurs- those just getting started in e-commerce- are much more likely to exclusively dropship products. The cost structure of the platform and ease of getting going with Shopify is very appealing to this market. So if you're just getting started and looking for the cheapest, quickest and easiest way to get a drop shipping store up and going, Shopify is a clear winner. Even if you're a more established merchant and drop shipping is a big part of your business, then you may find the marketplace tooling to be a better fit for your needs. But you'll need to do some research just to be sure. And the second reason to choose Shopify versus BigCommerce are that there are more apps in the app marketplace. There are significantly more third-party apps available for Shopify than for BigCommerce. Some BigCommerce supporter- I'm sure it's gonna chime in here and claim that BigCommerce has more functionality and thus has a lesser need for third-party apps. That's a solid line if you're a slick salesperson trying to persuade somebody to choose your e-commerce platform. But whether that's true or not in your partikular case really depends on the functionality that you're looking for. So it's tough to generalize an answer, so we'll base this just on statistiks alone. So, just based on statistiks. if you want some random piece of functionality that the core platform doesn't provide, there's a stronger chance that someone in the Shopify marketplace provides that functionality. So if you geek out on perusing third-party apps for additional functionality, then Shopify's got what you need, baby. Oh yeah, enjoy that marketplace. At some point. if you're serious about e-commerce, you're gonna want to accomplish something that your cart of choice just won't do. Having a large ecosystem of apps might be just the thing that makes your needed functionality affordable and keeps you from having to have a custom-developed Worst case. it's a safety net. if budget is your biggest concern, Sure, these apps can cost money, but are oftentimes much, much cheaper than trying to create that functionality on your own. And the third reason to choose Shopify over BigCommerce is that there are no limits on the amount of sales for your store. if you're happy with the features of your Shopify store, then you just keep growing that store without having to upgrade to a more expensive plan. You're a smart merchant, so I'm sure sooner or later you'll figure out that some limitation is holding you back and decide to upgrade to the robustness of a larger plan. But there's no one forcing you to make that decision. You can do it on your own time. The majority of Shopify's money comes from payment processing, so they don't really give a damn about your measly little subscription revenue. BigCommerce, on the other hand, doesn't push you into an in-house payment processor or charge transaction fees. That means the subscription income is a big part of their revenue. so they definitely care, Understandably so a man's gotta eat. But because of that their pricing is unfortunately based on your sales volume. For instance, their cheapest plan allows you to do $50,000 a year in sales. Once your sales for the preceding 12 months goes over that amount, they'll require you to upgrade to the next tier. Now that should be a smooth process. It's not like you have to rebuild your whole site or anything, It's just flip of a switch. but it does give you less control over which plan your on and what your costs are. You're not allowed to choose a plan based solely on the features provided in that plan, like you can with Shopify. And the next reason to choose Shopify over BigCommerce is theme availability. Traditionally, one of the biggest costs associated with a new website build is dialing that theme in just perfectly. It can cost thousands, tens of thousands of dollars if you're designing and building it from scratch. Now I don't have that kind of cheddar laying around, and you probably. you don't either, But luckily you don't need to if there are cheaper options available. Now BigCommerce has some nice themes on the marketplace, so it's not like you don't have any good theme options over there. But Shopify is on another level with the quantity and quality of the themes available. Often for the price of taking my family down to the local Starbucks for a whole bunch of mocha frappa-latte-cinos, you can have a clean design to use as the basis of your online business. That can cut your overall build cost significantly and allow you to use that money for something that moves the needle or perhaps is more fun like a nice bottle of whiskey. And the fifth reason to choose Shopify versus BigCommerce is its ease of.

Bigcommerce is the most open source hosted solution in the marketplace. this might be controversial, but why do you think big Commerce is better than Shopify? I don't think that Bigcommerce is better than Shopify. I know that Bigcommerce is better than Shopify. now I also know that a lot of people watching this. they're gonna be like: you're out of your mind. how's b-commerce better than Shopify? well, we have hundreds of clients on Shopify. we have hundreds of clients on Bigcommerce, so we have a pretty good sample size to Benchmark from. of course, there are things that Shopify does better than Bigcommerce, like their app infrastructure is a lot better than Bigcommerce, but most people don't know, or they don't care, that most of those apps significantly slow down your website. they significantly decrease your conversions. so I don't want to be on Shopify because I have access to thousands and thousands of apps that I might not need. big Commerce, on the other hand, cares about the customers. they have much better support than Shopify. their Enterprise support is so much better than Shopify. you can get access to their Engineers directly. with Shopify you cannot. Bigcommerce cares about their partners and if you actually look at their product roadmap, they are releasing so much functionality. Bigcommerce just launched the multi-store functionality. they are better with B2B and B2B functionalities. they are pushing Omni Channel, which is very, very important. I've been begging Shopify to create a Marketplace for years. I don't know why they haven't done this. even though Bigcommerce is not creating a Marketplace, they do understand the Omni Channel potential. that's why they purchased feednamics. and I can get into a lot of details on the tiknology of Bigcommerce over Shopify, like ability to have unlimited options and variables, ability to be able to customize the checkout. even if you are paying 100 a month for a very basic store setup with Shopify, your minimum to be able to edit checkout SDK would be like three thousand dollars per month. they force Shopify Plus for that. the template structure, the search and filter Advanced functionalities that you are able to have, the robust API that you get, where you can literally create any type of functionality or integration that you would like, and they don't limit their tiknology. they have open apis. if you want to just download their checkout SDK, edit it and re-upload, you have this capability with Bigcommerce. Bigcommerce is the most open source hosted solution in the marketplace. this is why I know that Bigcommerce is better than Shopify. your shop? but in my mind, the real question should be: why doesn't your base ecommerce platform offer you what you need out of the box? why should you install a hodgepodge of different apps that may conflict with one another and pay recurring fees when you can simply sign up for an ecommerce platform that does it all? now, when it comes to platform stability, an in-house solution is almost always more robust and stable than a third-party add-on. now, if you hate getting nickel and dimed, bigcommerce is an e-commerce platform that is adopted in everything you need. out-of-the-box philosophy and, unlike other shopping carts that force you to pay for apps, bigcommerce offers a suite of e-commerce features that are available right out of the box for one flat fee per month. now, this in-depth bigcommerce review will outline the pros and the cons of the platform and help you decide whether bigcommerce is the right shopping cart for you. but first off, what is bigcommerce? well, bigcommerce is a fully hosted ecommerce platform that allows you to easily set up your own online store to sell physical or digital products online, and, by paying a low monthly fee, bigcommerce will start out by toking about pricing. unlike other fully hosted ecommerce platforms, such as shopify, bigcommerce's pricing is fully transparent. for one flat fee, you get access to an entire suite of features without the need for plugins to run a powerful ecommerce store, and you're not going to get nickel and dime with separate apps with monthly recurring fees, and what you see is what you get now. the only caveat is that bigcommerce's monthly fee is based on the revenue that your store generates. so on the standard plan, it costs 29.95 a month for a store that generates up to 50k. on the plus plan, you pay 79.95 for a store that generates up to 180k in yearly revenue. the pro plan costs 299 for a store that generates up to 400k in yearly revenue, and anything higher than that is the enterprise plan, where you must contact bigcommerce for custom pricing. now, getting charged based on revenue can either be good or bad depending on your margins. so, for example, let's say your net profit margins are only five percent. so if your store generates 15 k in revenue per month, that leaves you with a profit of 750 bucks and at this revenue level you would be placed on the big commerce pro plan, which cost 2.99 a month, and that would basically cost you 40 of your profit. so for low margin businesses, you are probably better off going with a platform like shopify that doesn't charge based on revenue. however, most of you in the 20 to 40 profit margin range will not have this problem now. the great news about bigcommerce is that they do not charge transaction fees on any of their plans. in addition, you are free to use whichever credit card processing company that you want without incurring additional charges. now, in contrast, shopify charges up to a two percent transaction fee if you don't use shopify payments. now, by default, bigcommerce offers payment processing out of the box using braintree. and here are the default payment processing rates based on plan: on the standard plan, it's 2.9 percent plus 30 cents. on the plus plan, it's 2.5 percent plus 30 cents. on the pro plan is 2.2 plus 30 cents, and on the enterprise plan, you can negotiate lower rates. now, when it comes to credit card processing, i want to stress that the freedom to choose your own payment processor is a big deal, because credit card fees can quickly add up as your revenue grows. so, for example, you can often negotiate rates lower than 2.2 percent on your own store once you cross over 50k a month in revenue. now, the ability to use any credit card gateway without transaction fees is an even bigger deal if you are outside the us. so, for example, if you're on shopify and you live in thailand or any country where shopify payments is not supported, you have to pay a two percent transaction fee in addition to your credit card processing fees. but with bigcommerce, you can use any payment provider without any additional costs. all right, let's tok features. while bigcommerce offers a fully functional shopping cart out of the box, there are a couple features that are only available on the higher plans. but let's start with the standard plan. as mentioned earlier, bigcommerce offers a full suite of ecommerce features out of the box that are more than adequate for you to start selling online. so here's a list of the prominent features that are included in the standard plan and hire plans. you get a drag and drop page builder. if you're not tik savvy, their drag and drop page builder can help you design great looking web pages without touching a single line of code. free templates: bigcommerce offers a variety of free themes that are mobile, responsive and look great. payment processing: bigcommerce offers an out of the box integration with braintree. search engine optimization: bigcommerce has superior seo features compared to other shopping carts because they allow you to manually adjust the titles, meta descriptions and the url slugs for all of your products and categories. image optimization: bigcommerce will automatikally shrink down your images for fast page load speeds. discounts and gift vouchers. you can offer buy one get one free promotions to your discounts, repeat customer discounts and more. in fact, bigcommerce's discount engine is very powerful. product reviews: bigcommerce can automatikally solicit product views to be displayed on your shop, and these reviews can also show up in the google search results. you can also generate detailed customer reports, customer acquisition reports, search engine reports, financial reports and more from the backend interface. and then, finally, you also get automatik currency conversion. this feature is very important if you sell in different countries, and bigcommerce has fantastik international support. now bigcommerce's cheapest standard plan is only 29.95, but it's missing four main features, and by upgrading to the plus plan for 79.95 a month, you'll receive the following: an abandoned card saver: this tool automatikally emails your customers when they begin checkout but don't complete the process. now, most seasoned ecommerce entrepreneurs will be using clavio or an equivalent tool to handle abandoned carts, which makes this feature less important. you also get a persistent shopping cart: when a customer abandons their order, their shopping cart contents are saved until they return. now this feature is obviously important for abandoning card recovery. now the next feature is credit card storage. now this feature stores credit card information on bigcommerce's pci compliance servers, so a customer doesn't have to enter in their payment information again for subsequent purchases. now, this is important for mobile transactions, because no one likes typing on a small keyboard.

Shopify vs BigCommerce (2022) - Which Ecommerce Platform Is Best?

hey everyone. it's tom here with bunny media. hope you're all having a fantastik day today. so you're planning to start an ecommerce business and you're wondering should you sell on shopify or bigcommerce? now, both platforms are massive players in e-commerce, but while both platforms are awesome, they're both very, very different from one another, so it's important to know these differences so you can make the right choice for your business. so in this video, we're covering the main features of both shopify and bigcommerce, the pros and cons of each platform and how to ultimately choose what's right for your online business. specifically, we're covering how much control store owners have, pricing, integration and apps and the blocking capabilities of these two ecommerce platforms. let's dive in, all right. so the first factor we're going to look at between shopify and bigcommerce is how much control store owners have, and when it comes to picking the right ecommerce platform, control is actually a very important thing to consider, because you want to make sure that the platform you're on has enough flexibility to do what you want it to do. it's also important to think about how much design control you have, because the last thing you want to do is start your online business and then find out three or six months down the line, you're kind of boxed in and you have to switch to a new platform. so, that said, the good news is that both shopify and bigcommerce are pretty good when it comes to giving store owners more control over the look and feel of their stores. so with shopify, you can choose from hundreds of free or paid themes, you know, do your own custom coding or even hire developers to make a custom shopify store for you. and what's nice is that even beginner shopify stores give you control so you can edit how your store looks, edit your shopping cart, add things like coupon codes and all that stuff, so it does leave you with a lot of control out of the box. bigcommerce is also very similar and between the range of free things you have and the premium themes, you can pretty much make your online store look how you want it to look and make sure everything matches your brand. now it's honestly a little hard to pick a winner between bigcommerce versus shopify here in terms of control, because both platforms are very beginner friendly and quite flexible. now i will say that i prefer shopify's free themes a little bit to bigcommerce's free themes, and shopify just has more themes overall, so it gets a slight edge there, but overall this really isn't that much of a differentiating factor, and you can definitely find mobile robust- you know very visually appealing themes with both bigcommerce and shopify, all right. so the second factor we're going to look at in the shopify versus big commerce debate is pricing, and out of the gate it might look like shopify and big commerce have pretty much identikal pricing, but it's actually an area where these two platforms differ quite substantially. so with shopify, you're going to have to pay for monthly plans to launch your own store, and this starts at 29 per month and this is honestly what a lot of beginner e-commerce stores- or you know anyone testing out shopify- is going to want to go with. and this 29 plan is actually quite robust and unlocks most of what shopify has to offer. now. you can add your own domain name, you get an ssl certificate, you can tweak your theme kind of, edit your shopping cart a little bit, create coupon codes and do all of that fun stuff. you can also accept multiple currencies and different payment methods. so for 29 a month, shopify definitely lets you get a complete store up and running. now, in terms of payment processing fees, this is where shopify starts to get a little bit expensive for some store owners. so you basically have to opt into shopify payments unless you wanna get annihilated by fees, and this usually means you're paying about one to two percent in payment processing fees. fees can even get as high as 2.9 plus a 30 cent transaction fee. so overall, shopify definitely has some kind of steep transaction fees. you need to think about. some shopify plans get discounts on transaction fees, but again beginner store owners expect to spend between one and three percent every time you make a sale in fees. now, in terms of big commerce, pricing is actually one area where we think bigcommerce is superior to shopify. so bigcommerce pretty much has identikal monthly plans to shopify and again, you're gonna be spending about twenty nine dollars per month as a beginner store owner, but big commerce doesn't charge you with these additional payment processing fees. in fact, bigcommerce actually lets you use over 50 different payment processing partners so you can choose the payment processing method you like. add that to your store and you're off to the races. now these payment processors can and will still charge fees, and bigcommerce does charge fees for things like credit cards that you might accept for debit cards. so fees are still a part of the platform, but is definitely gonna be lower than shopify in most cases. now one slight downside of bigcommerce here in its monthly plans is that it caps how much revenue you can make per year. so once you make more than 50 000 per year, you have to upgrade from that beginner plan. but again, for a lot of beginner store owners or e-commerce operations this probably isn't that big of a deal. so bigcommerce also has a lot more functionality out of the box in shopify. so you're going to be spending less in third-party apps, which we'll cover later in this video. but the bottom line is bigcommerce better on fees, you're not spending as much on apps and overall it should be more affordable than shopify. all right, so i just mentioned integrations and third-party apps. so the third factor we're going to look at in the shopify versus bigcommerce debate is how many integrations and apps are available and if they're actually useful. so one of the advantages of using shopify over other ecommerce platforms is just how robust and you know in-depth its app store is. i mean, if you've seen our video on etsy versus shopify, you know how good shopify is and how it kind of blows the competition out of the water when it comes to these third-party integrations. so the shopify app store has literally thousands and thousands of apps you can download to help serve different functions for your online store, and this includes apps for categories like store design, marketing, sourcing and selling products, upselling, memberships and customer service. in a nutshell, if there's some specific function or service you need to add to your website, there's a really good chance you can find a shopify app that lets you do exactly that. but the one massive downside of the shopify app store is that a lot of these apps don't just charge you one time. they actually charge you on a recurring monthly basis, and so what this inevitably means is that, as you add more apps to your store to improve different aspects and functionalities, you're spending more and more every single month, and that bill never gets smaller. once again, this is kind of why big commerce stores tend to be a little bit cheaper. you get more functionality out of the box, so you probably need fewer apps, and so you're paying less per month in fees. so i used to work with shopify stores when i work in paid media and ad buying and honestly, a lot of the stores had like three, four, five, six or even more paid apps running per month. so you're at least looking at 100 to 200- a lot of the time, or even more- in these added costs, especially as your store scales. now this is still handy because if you encounter a stumbling block with your shopify store and you just need a third-party app to solve it, you're not very tiky and you don't want to solve the problem yourself. the app store is, again very useful, but just know a lot of the time it is paid to play. on top of that, shopify's app store is pretty much the largest out there and it's larger than

shopify versus big commerce. hi guys, in this video we're going to be taking a look at shopify versus bigcommerce and we're going to be going over all of the features and tools that these two websites provide so that we can determine which one is most suitable for you. but before i move on with the video, i would like to say that please click on the link in the description below so that you guys can sign up onto shopify and get a free trial. so, having said that, we will now move on with the video. so first i'm gonna go over to shopify and then i'm gonna go over to big commerce and then i'm gonna go over all of the tools and features that they both have. so first up, shopify. so when you sign up onto shopify, when you log in, this is how it is going to look like. this is going to be your dashboard and in front of you you have three options. so first one is called add product and then the second one is called customize theme and then the final one is add domain. basically, over here, if you have a domain, you can go ahead and add one. it'll make you look more professional and it will also help customers to find your online store much, much faster. and customizing themes. basically, what that means is that you can customize your online store depending upon your brand, so you can change the colors and themes and fonts and stuff like that. and then, finally, we have add products. i'm going to show you how you can add products later on in the video, so make sure you don't skip any parts of the video. and then, over here on the left side, we have couple of different tools. we have orders, we have products, customers, analytiks, marketing, discount and apps. now, as the name suggests, these all tools do exactly what their name suggests. so, in orders, we'll be able to, you know, organize orders and accept payments from customers. and then, in products, you'll be able to manage different products and add new products. and then, in customers, you will be able to manage different customers, their information and you can also view their purchase history. and then, in analytiks, you have all of the reports of your shop, so you have total sales, online store sessions, returning customers, online conversion rate, average order value and many, many more. and then you have marketing, and in marketing, you'll be able to, you know, promote your shop on different platforms. so all you have to do is start up a campaign. now, this is a campaign that i started. so, as you can see, uh, i was promoting my shop on snapchat and facebook, and it's really easy. over here, on the right side, you can see, this is how the ads will look like. so, on snapchat, it will look something like this: this will be on the explorer page and your ad is going to be over here with all the details, and this is how it will look like on facebook. as you can see, it's pretty simple, it's really easy, and the great thing about this is that you can run this ad for as long as you like. it can you run for one day, two days, a week, a month. it all depends upon you, and it really, really works. and then, finally, we have apps. now, this is really important. over here, you have the app store of shopify, and from here, you can download different applications onto your shop that will help you grow your business. so right now, i only have two apps: umbrello and shopify email. so obrello, i will tell you about it later. it's really cool, it's really easy to use. and then, finally, we have down below sales channels. now, in sales channels, what that basically means is that you'll be able to add different sales channels onto your shopify account and you'll be able to sell your shopify products onto different platforms, such as facebook or google, which is really, really cool. and if you don't see a sales channel that you want to use, you can just visit the shopify app store and over there you can, you know, search for it, and then you have online store and over here you will basically, you know, edit your online store. you have themes, you have blog posts, pages, navigations, domains and preferences. right now, i'm in the theme section over here, so this is my current theme, as you can see, and then you can apply more themes by visiting over their theme store. now they have two sections: they have free themes and they have shopify themes. if you look at the free themes, you only have 10 free themes in total and these are very, very simple and minimalistik, like they don't have a lot of different customization options, but they get the job done. and if you take a look at the paid themes, and you can also apply different themes from different places, so you can upload different themes over here or you can connect it with github and you can create your own theme on github with programming and python, or maybe you can find someone that can create one for you, or you can go over to other places, such as envato market, and you can get some themes from there as well. so, having said that, that is all the things that you needed to know about shopify. now let me show you how you can basically add products. so, to add products, you come over here onto home page and click on add products, and over here, you will be able to manually input your product. so over here, you will be able to input all the information needed, such as title, description and media, and in media you can upload photos or videos about your product. then you have pricing and then you have inventory and shipping as well, like all of the information you can put in manually. it's really easy. it's really simple. now let me just show you another way that you can add products onto shopify, which is through umbrello. now, if you come over to apps, you will see umbrella over here. all you have to do is just simply click on it and install it and sign up onto umbrella, and once you sign up, all you have to do is open it, and once you open it, it will look something like this, and over here on the left side, you have some options: you have import lists, you have products, you have orders and you have notifications and then, finally, you have find products. so click on find products and you will be taken over to this platform over here where you can find different products. now, as you can see, it says aliexpress over here. that is because umbrella is now searching for different products onto aliexpress and we can get all of the information and all of the products from aliexpress over onto shopify. so how you do that is basically: let's just take this decoration piece over here. if i hover my mouse over it, all i have to do next, all i have to do next is simply click on add to import list. now, when i do that, this product will be added over here into the import list and if i come over here onto import list, we will see that this is the product right here and we can change all of the information about this so that it doesn't seem like we copied it. so you can go ahead and change the name of this product. you can add in different variations- maybe choose one or not, choose the other one- and then you have pricing. you can change the pricing as well, and then you have description, so you basically have all of the dimensions and shapes and stuff like that, and then you have images of all of these products. so you have five images that you selected. from all 36 images you can choose whichever image you want. you can change it up a bit and once everything is to your liking, all you have to do is just simply click on import to store. now, once you do that, as you can see over here, it's importing over to shopify account and once it's done that, as you can see, it's imported. simply come over here and underneath products and you will see the product that you have imported. as you can see, it's over here. this product has been imported to shopify. so if you go back to shopify and click on products, we will see our product over here. as you can see, this is the night lamp over here and if we click on it, we can edit all of the details over here as well. we can change the name, we can change the description, choose which variant we want to sell and then down below we even have the seo of this websi.
