Product Filtering: Shopify OS 2.0 vs Product Filter & Search by Boost Commerce
Shopify has recently introduced the ability to set up product filtering on search and collection pages. This article compares the storefront filtering of Shopify OS 2.0 themes with product filters backed by Product Filter and Search App by Boost Commerce, to determine which solution is best for businesses.
Comparison of Filter Options:
Shopify OS 2.0 themes allow storefront filtering by availability, price, product type, vendor or brand, product options, and meta fields. However, the price filter is not displayed if the customer's currency is set to anything other than the store's primary currency. Also, the native filters are hidden for collections with over 1,000 products. The Product Filter and Search App by Boost Commerce offers pre-made filter options for collection title, percent sale, and review ratings, and allows unlimited filters from any product attribute with a filter by tag and filter by metafield.
Arranging and Renaming Filters:
Both options for product filters allow dragging and dropping to rearrange the order of filter options in the storefront. However, relabeling the filters using the navigation setting of OS 2.0 is not possible. The changes can be done effortlessly in the Boost Commerce app.
Displaying Filter Values:
By default, most OS 2.0 themes show the price filter as a range slider, color filter, and a swatch. The rest use a list. However, if there are product options like length, height, and width, it is better to display them in a range slider than a list. The Boost Commerce app allows merchants to turn any numeric product attribute into a range slider. Also, the swatch settings feature in the app allows merchants to add their custom images to the swatch display to help shoppers visualize the color or shape of the products.
Filter Trees for Different Collections:
Different collections using product filtering of Shopify OS 2.0 have almost the same filter options except for the filter by product options. However, in the Boost Commerce app, merchants can tailor a specific filter tree and assign it to a particular collection.
Filter Layout:
A handful of OS 2.0 themes allow merchants to change the position of the filters. However, there can be some flaws while switching the filter layout and theme editing. The Boost Commerce app allows merchants to switch from horizontal layout to vertical layout and vice versa within a few mouse clicks. The support team can also assist in customization for filter layout upon request.
Pagination Styles and Sorting Options:
Some OS 2.0 themes offer traditional pagination and infinite loading. The Boost Commerce app offers pagination, infinite loading, and the load more button. By default, there are five sorting options enabled on the Shopify collection pages of OS 2.0, which are sorting by price, best selling, date, alphabet, and featured. The Boost Commerce app allows merchants to create sorting options for both collection pages and search result pages.
Filter on Search Result Pages:
Shopify storefront filtering on the search page is available on some themes only. The search filter tree is one of two standard filters in the Product Filter and Search App by Boost Commerce. It is enabled by default but can be easily turned off using a toggle.
While the default filters and sort types of OS 2.0 can cover some basic needs of online shoppers, there is little room for customization and optimization, especially for scaling stores. The Boost Commerce app offers a wide range of in-depth filter settings and useful features to make the filters user-friendly and fit their strategies and branding. It is suitable for Shopify businesses of all levels.
5 must-have features for an advanced Shopify filter app
A website filter is a crucial tool for any e-commerce website. If visitors can't find what they are looking for, they will leave in a second and go to a competitor's site. However, Shopify's default filter can only offer fundamental features that cannot meet most stores' demands. Therefore, many people have to look for a third-party filter app. This video will help you find the most suitable one by showing five advanced features that an advanced Shopify filter app must have.
Advanced Features of a Shopify Filter App:
1. Custom Filter Options:
- A third-party filter app needs to support more filter options than Shopify's default filter.
- Custom filter options enable you to build any filter for your store in the fastest way possible.
2. More Ways to Display Filter Option Value:
- An advanced filter needs to do more than just show basic filtering as a list with multi-selection.
- It needs to have custom range slider and custom swatch settings to ensure the best user experience possible.
3. Custom Filter for Different Collections:
- Different categories should not have the same filter options.
- Having a custom filter for each collection will provide a better customer experience on your website.
4. Merge Value:
- This advanced feature helps you group similar product options value into one group.
- It makes it easier for customers to find what they are looking for without being confused by too many options.
5. Filter Analytics:
- Insights about customer behaviors are invaluable for the decision-making process.
- With filter analytics, you can analyze total filter clicks, top filter option value, and top filter option value combination.
A premium Shopify filter app must have at least those five features. If the current app you are trying doesn't have those, try to find another one. However, if you haven't found any, we recommend you to use Product Filter and Search App by Boost Commerce. It not only has all the advanced filters but also supports you with many great benefits.
