How to Start an Online Store [Business Checklist]
In this podcast, Anton Crowley from ecommercelifestyle.com answers the question about what needs to be done before launching an online store. He provides a business checklist, including business formation options, tax identification number, sales tax certificate, and business banking, to help entrepreneurs get started.
Business Formation Options:
There are two options for business formation: sole proprietor or forming a business entity. Sole proprietorship is the easiest and most straightforward way to go, but it carries legal obligations, including personal liability. Forming an LLC or an S corporation can transfer the liability to the business entity, offer tax benefits, and provide a separate taxable entity.
Tax Identification Number:
When reaching out to suppliers and getting approved for accounts, a tax identification number or EIN number is required. Applying for a tax ID number is free and easy online, and it is recommended to use it to keep personal and business purposes separate and get tax benefits.
Sales Tax Certificate:
Different states have different rules regarding sales tax, and it is crucial to check if the state requires sales tax and obtain a sales tax certificate. Having a sales tax certificate allows the business to charge tax in the state where the business is located and pay sales tax to the state.
Business Banking:
Opening a separate business checking account is recommended to keep things cleaner, see the money better, and avoid mixing personal and business finances. Many online banks offer free business checking accounts, and it is recommended to speak to a bank or an accountant for advice.
Business Credit Card:
Having a business credit card offers many benefits, including earning points for ad costs and product costs, but it requires a cosigner and building a credit history. It is recommended to start with a secured credit card, which requires a deposit and builds credit history.
Before launching an online store, entrepreneurs need to form a business entity, obtain a tax identification number, get a sales tax certificate, open a business checking account, and get a business credit card. Following this business checklist can help entrepreneurs start their online store with legal and financial knowledge and avoid mixing personal and business finances.
