00:00:54 00:00:58 I want to tok about here is what is the
00:00:56 00:00:59 difference between dropshipping white
00:00:58 00:01:02 labeling and creating your own products
00:00:59 00:01:03 I think it's important to define the
00:01:02 00:01:05 different terms
00:01:03 00:01:08 there's dropshipping which basically you
00:01:05 00:01:10 act as a middleman customers buy stuff
00:01:08 00:01:12 from you and then you turn around and
00:01:10 00:01:15 tell the manufacturer where to ship it
00:01:12 00:01:17 so an example of this might be you are
00:01:15 00:01:20 the kayak king and you have a website
00:01:17 00:01:22 kayak King com and you help pair people
00:01:20 00:01:24 with certain kayaks so someone might
00:01:22 00:01:28 come to your website buy a $500 kayak
00:01:24 00:01:32 then you go around and you pay $400 to
00:01:28 00:01:35 some manufacturer let's say you know
00:01:32 00:01:36 rugged outdoors kayaks you give them 400
00:01:35 00:01:38 bucks and they ship it for you
00:01:36 00:01:40 so there's a lot of benefits for this
00:01:38 00:01:42 and we'll tok about the benefits in
00:01:40 00:01:44 just a second the next thing we'll tok
00:01:42 00:01:46 about is white labeling and define that
00:01:44 00:01:48 white labeling is basically just taking
00:01:46 00:01:50 a product that already exists nine times
00:01:48 00:01:51 out of ten this is going to Alibaba or
00:01:50 00:01:55 going to some kind of Chinese
00:01:51 00:01:57 manufacturer and just stiking your logo
00:01:55 00:01:58 on it and making it your own product
00:01:57 00:02:00 even though there's nothing special
00:01:58 00:02:02 about it there's nothing that makes it
00:02:00 00:02:04 your own thing that company can turn
00:02:02 00:02:05 around and white label it as many
00:02:04 00:02:08 companies as possible meaning you'll
00:02:05 00:02:11 have as much competition as they want
00:02:08 00:02:13 really an example of this would be you
00:02:11 00:02:16 go to a Chinese manufacturer who bruises
00:02:13 00:02:18 handheld fans and you stik your logo on
00:02:16 00:02:20 it and maybe it's cool breeze fans and
00:02:18 00:02:23 you're just you know whatever you're
00:02:20 00:02:26 Fanning yourself with that and that's a
00:02:23 00:02:27 white labeling a product so good thing
00:02:26 00:02:28 about that is it's a little bit easier
00:02:27 00:02:31 than creating your own product from
00:02:28 00:02:33 scratch but the downside is anybody can
00:02:31 00:02:34 do it it's not that hard
00:02:33 00:02:36 another downside is you do have to pay
00:02:34 00:02:37 for inventory so drop shipping is a
00:02:36 00:02:42 little bit better because you don't have
00:02:37 00:02:43 to pay for inventory in that regard but
00:02:42 00:02:46 with all of these one of the issues you
00:02:43 00:02:47 run across is the easier it is the
00:02:46 00:02:49 easier it is for a competitor to come in
00:02:47 00:02:51 and steal your lunch
00:02:49 00:02:53 because it would suck if you're the
00:02:51 00:02:54 kayak king and let's just say
00:02:53 00:02:56 hypothetikally you have the website
00:02:54 00:02:57 kayak king com you put up a bunch of
00:02:56 00:02:59 products and there's nothing special
00:02:57 00:03:02 about your website someone else can do
00:02:59 00:03:03 that tomorrow now what might be special
00:03:02 00:03:05 about your website is maybe you have
00:03:03 00:03:07 really good SEO really good paid ads
00:03:05 00:03:09 maybe I want your YouTube videos or
00:03:07 00:03:11 really good content explaining what
00:03:09 00:03:13 kayaks are best for what kind of
00:03:11 00:03:14 situations so you need some kind of a
00:03:13 00:03:16 competitive advantage same thing holds
00:03:14 00:03:17 true with white labeling now creating
00:03:16 00:03:20 your own product is pretty
00:03:17 00:03:22 self-explanatory but that's creating a
00:03:20 00:03:25 product from scratch and I recommend
00:03:22 00:03:27 this if you're serious if you're serious
00:03:25 00:03:28 about e-commerce creating your own
00:03:27 00:03:30 product from scratch is that your best
00:03:28 00:03:33 bet if you're just dipping your toes in
00:03:30 00:03:35 drop shipping is pretty good it's a I
00:03:33 00:03:37 think drop shipping is really good for
00:03:35 00:03:39 learning it's not good for all
00:03:37 00:03:40 situations but I think drop shipping is
00:03:39 00:03:42 good for learning and I did do a video
00:03:40 00:03:44 on why drop shipping is a waste of time
00:03:42 00:03:46 and I still stand by that I think a lot
00:03:44 00:03:48 of for most people drop shipping so
00:03:46 00:03:49 waste of time a lot of gurus out there a
00:03:48 00:03:51 lot of internet marketers try to make it
00:03:49 00:03:53 sound like drop shipping is the easiest
00:03:51 00:03:55 money in the world it's not the case
00:03:53 00:03:56 most people that are making money on
00:03:55 00:03:59 drop shipping or spending a lot of money
00:03:56 00:04:01 on advertising so keep that in mind when
00:03:59 00:04:04 you're trying to start all shiny new
00:04:01 00:04:06 drop shipping website the the next thing
00:04:04 00:04:09 I'll say is creating your own product
00:04:06 00:04:11 makes for a really big moat your castle
00:04:09 00:04:13 your brand your company is your castle
00:04:11 00:04:16 and you don't want competitors to come
00:04:13 00:04:18 and break in so the harder it is to
00:04:16 00:04:19 create a company the bigger the moat
00:04:18 00:04:21 around your castle the higher the walls
00:04:19 00:04:24 aren't the bigger the wall but the
00:04:21 00:04:26 better the defense is so if it's really
00:04:24 00:04:27 easy to do like drop shipping drop
00:04:26 00:04:29 shipping is very easy to
00:04:27 00:04:31 now the hard part obviously as I
00:04:29 00:04:33 mentioned is creating some kind of a
00:04:31 00:04:36 brand creating a reason why people would
00:04:33 00:04:38 want to come to you that that creates a
00:04:36 00:04:40 little bit more of a moat but for for
00:04:38 00:04:42 long term success I mean any big company
00:04:40 00:04:44 you can think of they have their own
00:04:42 00:04:47 branded product I also think drop
00:04:44 00:04:50 shipping is dying as Amazon becomes more
00:04:47 00:04:54 popular unless its b2b so what you can
00:04:50 00:04:56 think about for yourself is is this
00:04:54 00:04:58 something that people would go to Amazon
00:04:56 00:04:59 for and if answer's no then maybe a drop
00:04:58 00:05:01 shipping website makes sense if it's
00:04:59 00:05:02 business-to-business a lot of business
00:05:01 00:05:05 stuff a lot of times business people
00:05:02 00:05:07 won't buy from Amazon because their
00:05:05 00:05:09 higher end items aren't available on
00:05:07 00:05:10 Amazon what I mean by higher price tag
00:05:09 00:05:12 items things that a lot of consumers
00:05:10 00:05:14 aren't going to get it's also good if
00:05:12 00:05:16 your product needs if there's a lot of
00:05:14 00:05:18 options in your demographic and there
00:05:16 00:05:20 needs to be some kind of a explanation
00:05:18 00:05:21 on which things the right so the kayak
00:05:20 00:05:23 ting is a perfect example because not
00:05:21 00:05:25 every kayaks right for every situation
00:05:23 00:05:26 and maybe you would explain what's the
00:05:25 00:05:28 difference between an ocean kayak and a
00:05:26 00:05:32 river kayak I don't know if that's even
00:05:28 00:05:35 a thing but that's an example so I will
00:05:32 00:05:39 probably stop here and we'll all link at

00:05:39 00:05:41 some of the good things about drop
00:05:40 00:05:42 shipping in the rest of this video we're
00:05:41 00:05:44 gonna tok about white labeling and
00:05:42 00:05:45 creating your own product and go

00:06:02 00:06:05 and I think the reason is there's this
00:06:04 00:06:07 question when you're a business and
00:06:05 00:06:09 trying to buy business-related Goods
00:06:07 00:06:12 where do I go to buy a product and
00:06:09 00:06:14 Amazon's not usually the answer so by
00:06:12 00:06:15 having a drop shipping site you act as
00:06:14 00:06:18 that middleman which is a needed service
00:06:15 00:06:20 I also think drop shipping websites
00:06:18 00:06:22 could make sense if you're trying to be
00:06:20 00:06:25 the expert or you're trying to build a
00:06:22 00:06:26 brand on I want to be the kayak King I
00:06:25 00:06:27 know everything about kayak ting I have
00:06:26 00:06:30 a youtube channel or I teach people how
00:06:27 00:06:32 to kayak I am just I love kayaking and
00:06:30 00:06:35 if you want to do something like that
00:06:32 00:06:38 that makes a lot more sense than just
00:06:35 00:06:40 having a website where you her a
00:06:38 00:06:41 middleman and you don't really add any
00:06:40 00:06:41 value so if you're going to be doing a
00:06:41 00:06:42 drop
00:06:41 00:06:45 website you need to think to yourself
00:06:42 00:06:48 how am I going to be adding value to the
00:06:45 00:06:50 world and if you're only added value is
00:06:48 00:06:53 that your connecting people eventually
00:06:50 00:06:54 in my opinion the manufacturers will
00:06:53 00:06:57 come out with their own websites or the
00:06:54 00:07:00 shirt selling on Amazon like I have a
00:06:57 00:07:01 lot of followers actually on effective
00:07:00 00:07:04 e-commerce that want to start drop
00:07:01 00:07:06 shipping sites and I'd say about 90% of
00:07:04 00:07:08 them their business model does not make
00:07:06 00:07:11 sense for instance a lot of a lot of
00:07:08 00:07:12 them are t-shirts I I think I'll use
00:07:11 00:07:14 that as an example a lot of them are
00:07:12 00:07:16 t-shirts well I'm gonna buy a t-shirt
00:07:14 00:07:18 there's so many places to go
00:07:16 00:07:19 what makes your site special why would I
00:07:18 00:07:20 want to go to your site and I'm not
00:07:19 00:07:22 saying it's impossible there's people
00:07:20 00:07:26 that make a lot of money selling
00:07:22 00:07:27 dropshipping t-shirts but also with
00:07:26 00:07:29 certain products what's gonna stop the
00:07:27 00:07:33 manufacturer from doing it themselves so
00:07:29 00:07:35 let's say your drop shipping drones for
00:07:33 00:07:37 instance and what's stopping the
00:07:35 00:07:39 manufacturer from selling it on Amazon
00:07:37 00:07:41 or their own website cheaper than you
00:07:39 00:07:44 can possibly sell it for the answer is
00:07:41 00:07:47 probably nothing so that's one of the
00:07:44 00:07:50 big downsides in in life I think the
00:07:47 00:07:52 easier something is the more competitors
00:07:50 00:07:54 you're gonna have the less advantageous
00:07:52 00:07:55 it is in the long run so what I mean by
00:07:54 00:07:57 this creating your own product is very
00:07:55 00:07:59 hard it's very labor-intensive
00:07:57 00:08:00 you're building a moat around your
00:07:59 00:08:02 castle you have this you know you're
00:08:00 00:08:05 building up all your defenses where if
00:08:02 00:08:06 it's really easy to get into it it's
00:08:05 00:08:08 gonna be really easy for someone else to
00:08:06 00:08:10 get into it which means you're not that
00:08:08 00:08:12 special and your website's not that
00:08:10 00:08:14 special so I think that's something very
00:08:12 00:08:16 important to keep in mind I don't
00:08:14 00:08:18 recommend drop shipping for most people
00:08:16 00:08:20 and the reason is I don't think it's a
00:08:18 00:08:22 long-term asset now if you're just
00:08:20 00:08:24 you're new to this you don't have a lot
00:08:22 00:08:26 of money and you want to just jump in
00:08:24 00:08:28 really quickly sure go ahead and do it
00:08:26 00:08:30 but if you have a little bit of money
00:08:28 00:08:32 saved up I highly recommend white
00:08:30 00:08:34 labeling or creating your own product
00:08:32 00:08:35 even more specifically there's just
00:08:34 00:08:38 there's a ton of downsides with drop
00:08:35 00:08:40 shipping also a lot of the Guru's out
00:08:38 00:08:41 there to tok about how easy drop
00:08:40 00:08:44 shipping is it's because they're
00:08:41 00:08:46 spending a lot of money on ads it's not
00:08:44 00:08:48 that they're everyone touts it is this
00:08:46 00:08:51 way of making money without having to
00:08:48 00:08:52 spend any money because obviously most
00:08:51 00:08:55 creating your own product can cost a lot
00:08:52 00:08:56 of money but the truth is
00:08:55 00:08:58 very different it usually takes a lot of
00:08:56 00:08:59 money they're spending money on Adwords
00:08:58 00:09:01 they're spending money on product
00:08:59 00:09:02 listing at ads they're spending money on
00:09:01 00:09:05 Facebook ads they're spending money on
00:09:02 00:09:07 traffic to come to their website so
00:09:05 00:09:09 that's something to keep in mind even
00:09:07 00:09:11 though it might seem really shiny at
00:09:09 00:09:14 first drop shipping is this holy grail
00:09:11 00:09:15 of making money online it's not
00:09:14 00:09:18 necessarily that I have a whole video on
00:09:15 00:09:20 why I think drop shipping is a waste of
00:09:18 00:09:22 time so I won't belabor this point right
00:09:20 00:09:25 now but I think it's good for starting
00:09:22 00:09:27 bad for the long term white labeling so
00:09:25 00:09:30 this makes a lot of sense in my opinion
00:09:27 00:09:33 for Amazon and that's about it I mean
00:09:30 00:09:34 maybe it makes sense getting people to
00:09:33 00:09:36 your website maybe you find some kind of
00:09:34 00:09:37 weird widget that no one knows exists
00:09:36 00:09:39 maybe it's a really cool vegetable
00:09:37 00:09:42 peeler that has some kind of a function
00:09:39 00:09:43 that other vegetable peelers don't have
00:09:42 00:09:46 it already exists but for whatever
00:09:43 00:09:48 reason it's not big in America and you
00:09:46 00:09:50 think that it could be really big then
00:09:48 00:09:52 it might make sense like I said also
00:09:50 00:09:54 it's good for Amazon one of the benefits
00:09:52 00:09:56 of this is you don't need to go through
00:09:54 00:09:58 all the work of creating your own
00:09:56 00:10:00 product of course as I stated earlier
00:09:58 00:10:02 the negative is it's very easy for
00:10:00 00:10:04 someone to knock you off my friend that
00:10:02 00:10:06 sold the handheld fans that's exactly
00:10:04 00:10:08 what happened to him someone came and
00:10:06 00:10:10 just knocked him off now true white
00:10:08 00:10:12 labeling means you have your brand on
00:10:10 00:10:14 there and it makes it that gives you a
00:10:12 00:10:17 little bit more of a moat because you're
00:10:14 00:10:20 you know whatever let's say pure bliss
00:10:17 00:10:22 handheld fans and on Amazon you'd have
00:10:20 00:10:25 your own category or your own product
00:10:22 00:10:27 page I should say that is beneficial
00:10:25 00:10:30 that is a little bit more of a moat
00:10:27 00:10:33 but once again white labeling isn't that
00:10:30 00:10:34 special it's not it's not my preferred
00:10:33 00:10:37 method now what I do prefer personally
00:10:34 00:10:38 is creating your own product but the big
00:10:37 00:10:40 downside I want to start off saying
00:10:38 00:10:43 right off the bat is it's expensive it's
00:10:40 00:10:44 not cheap to start your own product now
00:10:43 00:10:46 you can do it for cheaper for instance
00:10:44 00:10:47 performance nut butter I probably could
00:10:46 00:10:48 have done it for 50 bucks a hundred
00:10:47 00:10:49 bucks I probably could have whipped up a
00:10:48 00:10:52 batch in my kitchen
00:10:49 00:10:54 sold it at a farmers market made 200
00:10:52 00:10:56 dollars and then go maybe not a farmers
00:10:54 00:10:58 market because that cost money to get in
00:10:56 00:10:59 it sell it to friends and family make
00:10:58 00:11:03 that $200 spend that take that 200
00:10:59 00:11:04 ollars make $400 worth of nut butter
00:11:03 00:11:06 sell the nut butter you know back and
00:11:04 00:11:08 forth I wanted to cut through the BS I
00:11:06 00:11:10 wanted to personally I put down
00:11:08 00:11:12 decent chunk of change probably five to
00:11:10 00:11:14 ten thousand dollars on the Kickstarter
00:11:12 00:11:16 but that included things like sending
00:11:14 00:11:18 out samples to influencers sending
00:11:16 00:11:20 creating a video which cost me thirty
00:11:18 00:11:21 six hundred bucks right there
00:11:20 00:11:24 but the reason that creating your own
00:11:21 00:11:27 product is so great in my opinion why I
00:11:24 00:11:28 think most people should do it if you're
00:11:27 00:11:29 thinking about starting an ecommerce
00:11:28 00:11:31 store why I think this is the method
00:11:29 00:11:33 that you should do is because you're
00:11:31 00:11:34 creating something really special you're
00:11:33 00:11:36 adding a lot of value to the world
00:11:34 00:11:38 you're doing something that is gonna be
00:11:36 00:11:39 hard for your competitors to knock you
00:11:38 00:11:41 off and trust me creating your own
00:11:39 00:11:44 product is hard I've spent the last six
00:11:41 00:11:46 months plus maybe the last year in my
00:11:44 00:11:48 spare time mostly working on performance
00:11:46 00:11:50 nut butter so by having this product
00:11:48 00:11:52 having your own product you have this
00:11:50 00:11:53 really big moat with these huge castle
00:11:52 00:11:55 walls and there's nothing stopping
00:11:53 00:11:57 someone from creating their own
00:11:55 00:11:58 off-brand a performance nut butter it's
00:11:57 00:12:01 not that special I mean even more
00:11:58 00:12:03 special to be getting a patent etc but
00:12:01 00:12:05 that's probably beyond the scope of this
00:12:03 00:12:07 podcast cuz I don't know a lot about how
00:12:05 00:12:10 to do that but by having your own
00:12:07 00:12:12 product you're you're able to create
00:12:10 00:12:13 some kind of a tribe around you as well
00:12:12 00:12:15 now you can do this with dropship and
00:12:13 00:12:16 you can do this with white labeling you
00:12:15 00:12:19 can create a tribe but when it's
00:12:16 00:12:20 something brand new it's a lot easier to
00:12:19 00:12:23 get followers it's a lot easier to get
00:12:20 00:12:25 people to to like your company to be
00:12:23 00:12:26 diehard fans of your company I have
00:12:25 00:12:29 quite a number of people with
00:12:26 00:12:31 performance nut butter that love my
00:12:29 00:12:33 company one of my favorite stories is a
00:12:31 00:12:35 guy actually approached me and he wanted
00:12:33 00:12:38 to buy temporary tattoos with my logo to
00:12:35 00:12:40 put on his shoulder during a mud race
00:12:38 00:12:44 like a like a Spartan race type thing or
00:12:40 00:12:45 mud obstacle running type race and I
00:12:44 00:12:46 told him you know I don't really have
00:12:45 00:12:48 the budget for that right now he ended
00:12:46 00:12:49 up buying the stikers anyways and
00:12:48 00:12:51 putting them on his arm he felt so
00:12:49 00:12:53 invested in the company so invested in
00:12:51 00:12:55 the brand now there's no way that would
00:12:53 00:12:56 happen if I was just a white label or a
00:12:55 00:12:58 drop shipping company I mean I guess
00:12:56 00:13:00 it's possible if I was the kayak king
00:12:58 00:13:02 and I had a huge army around me it's
00:13:00 00:13:03 possible that he would have been like
00:13:02 00:13:06 wow the kayak Kings
00:13:03 00:13:08 super amazing but once again your moats
00:13:06 00:13:09 not that big there's not a lot stopping
00:13:08 00:13:11 someone else from coming in and being
00:13:09 00:13:13 the kayak king so creating your product
00:13:11 00:13:15 we'll do more episodes on how to
00:13:13 00:13:17 actually create your own product later
00:13:15 00:13:18 but this is the method if you're
00:13:17 00:13:21 starting an online store this is by far
00:13:18 00:13:22 the method I recommend doing so with
00:13:21 00:13:24 that being said
00:13:22 00:13:26 an ounce if you are trying to start an
00:13:24 00:13:28 online store I have a course coming out
00:13:26 00:13:29 I'm gonna be actually launching it I'm
00:13:28 00:13:31 gonna be doing it every few months but
00:13:29 00:13:33 I'm gonna be launching the first one
00:13:31 00:13:35 it's an online store a twosie course and
00:13:33 00:13:37 basically what that means is I'm gonna
00:13:35 00:13:39 take a group of probably around ten
00:13:37 00:13:42 entrepreneurs and it's gonna be very you
00:13:39 00:13:43 know small group of us from just an idea
00:13:42 00:13:45 all the way to a finish store in five
00:13:43 00:13:46 weeks and I'm gonna give you some tips
00:13:45 00:13:48 on how to get traffic I'm gonna show you
00:13:46 00:13:50 how to actually build the website I'm
00:13:48 00:13:52 gonna do a lot of really great stuff
00:13:50 00:13:55 with you you can go to effective
00:13:52 00:13:58 ecommerce comm /az to get more
00:13:55 00:13:59 information on that the other thing you
00:13:58 00:14:02 can do is if you go to effective
00:13:59 00:14:05 e-commerce and get my success pact and

00:14:05 00:14:08 information including a checklist for
00:14:06 00:14:10 starting your online business which I've
00:14:08 00:14:11 gotten a lot of good feedback about I
00:14:10 00:14:13 probably have a hundred things on that
00:14:11 00:14:15 things you never would have thought of
00:14:13 00:14:17 things like I mean a very simple thing
00:14:15 00:14:18 is adding Google Analytiks from day one
00:14:17 00:14:20 adding that little tracking code it's
00:14:18 00:14:22 very easy to do and it provides a ton of
