Hello everyone, my name is Narayan and in this session, let's understand system design or software architecture for location-based services like Yelp, Foursquare or TripAdvisor. These systems are designed to provide information about nearby restaurants, tourist places, or attractions based on user-provided information like place name, GPS coordinates, etc. These systems also allow users to upload information, comments, ratings, and photos.

Before understanding the system design, let's curate the functional and non-functional requirements and derive some capacity estimations.

Functional requirements for location-based services are:

- User should be able to have their own profile and login/logout from the system

- User should be able to search for any place, restaurant, or tourist attraction based on place name or GPS coordinates

- User should be able to comment and rate the service or place

- User should be able to upload photos

Non-functional requirements for system design or software architecture are:

- The system should be always available for users to access the information

- The system should be scalable dynamically based on traffic

- The system should have low latency to provide information as fast as possible

To estimate the requirements of data I/O and traffic, we need to map out the features and data tables we want in our system. For example, for each location entry, we need to store data like ID, name, category, GPS coordinates, description, etc. Based on the size of these attributes, we can estimate how much space we need for each entry.

To calculate the total data required for the system, we need to consider the number of entries we plan to store, the number of replication factors, and any additional data we plan to add in the future.

It's important to understand the scale or traffic estimations to choose the right database. MongoDB is a good fit for our requirement as it stores data as documents, but Elasticsearch is a better choice as it provides full-text search support and GIS support. Elasticsearch also provides auto sharding, partitioning, rich queries, replication, and other features in-built.

In conclusion, to design a location-based service system, we need to consider functional and non-functional requirements, estimate the data I/O and traffic, and choose the right database. Elasticsearch is a better choice for its full-text search support and GIS support.
