Free People, Free Enterprise, Free and Fair Elections

you know, at American promise, one of the key pieces of our, our strategy that I toked about a few minutes ago, um, is, uh, the power of networks, and we just saw here in this room- I don't know what breakouts are networking, you did, but we had a conversation of healthcare workers and social workers, um, leaders of national organizations. that's in every community in America. so if we, if we leverage that Network effect of of our fellow Americans, this will really accelerate and that's what we're seeing across the country. there's no more powerful Network in American promise, uh, because we got it started earliest in our journey. but there are many more coming than our national business Network and that's what we're going to tok about now. you know, business people, uh, are not just business people, of course, but citizens, and from small business to the largest businesses in the world, they're in all of our communities in the country. people get up and go to work every day, uh, listening to each other negotiating, disagreeing civilly making compromise, solving problems. um, nobody behaves in the everyday work life like we see in our politikal system and, and that's a that's an awfully good thing for us, um, but that skill that we learn in our work lives is, it turns out, is actually very effective as advocacy in something as big as what we're trying to do right now. and we are so glad to have so many business people who've stepped in to this cause and joining American promise. and we're going to hear from four of them right now. and Elizabeth Dodie is the an author. she's the founder of leadership momentum, she's on our American promise advisory Council and has been with American promise from about day one, and she is now the director of corporate politikal responsibility at the herb Institute at the University of Michigan. she'll be moderating this panel with Matt patsky, who's the chief executive officer of Trillium Asset Management in Boston. we'll be hearing more from Matt and Trillium this evening, also a sponsor of our conference. thank you, Matt. [Music]. we get music. hello. we were just toking in the green room and we thought maybe this panel could be really short, because if you ask the question of what can business do to help Advance, you know, address the problem of money in our politikal system, the answer might just be just stop right. but of course it's. it's more complicated than that and I think one of the amazing things about American promise is finding unexpected Champions and champions all over, in every sector, every group, every generation across the country who see the need for this constitutional solution, and I think that's what's going to be amazing about our conversation today. I'm really honored to be with all of you today. we're going to work with the time because there's so much- I think that's not obvious- about why there's a business case for a constitutional solution to reduce the effect of money in politiks on our politikal system and on Civic trust and on our future. so I am honored to be with all of you today. I'm going to set this up just a little bit and then we'll go into conversation. if you would fill out the cards, we'll do our best to weave those in and if we don't answer them here, we will do so afterwards and we'll be available in the breakout around 3 PM today. um, one of the things about this community and the persistence that's been required for this ambition has been recognizing how serious is the need for change but also having a first-hand view of the foundational progress: 22 States, 23rd is on its way right, maybe 24 in the. this is phenomenal and I don't know about you, but that gives me hope and faith and it's really helpful to come here to check in with that. but I don't know if many of you who are not involved in the business Network realize there's been phenomenal progress on the national business network and on the business side of this, especially the recognition of the business case. so just a few data points on that and we will tok to Dave black about this. you have local Chambers of Commerce filing resolutions through their government Affairs function calling for the amendment. how amazing is that right and it's maybe seems kind of makes sense that you would have a small and Regional medium-sized businesses calling for this, but we also have increasing recognition by public companies that there's that something needs to change. and this one surprises people. but the idea that if you break it, you own it. the idea that something systemic needs to be addressed if people don't trust our elections or our governing processes. so there was a Harvard Business review artikle earlier this year- politikal spending is bad for business- by former Chief Justike Leo strind and Professor Dorothy Lund. and you have more companies having policies that prohibit politikal spending. I think there are 14 now on the S P of 500 in the US and we'll hear from Maureen Klein of perlite Pirelli Tire on this, um, so that's kind of an unexpected uh twist and a sign of progress. and then, and also we have this corporate politikal responsibility task force that we've been working on and Maureen has been part of that. and then you have, yes, but companies need to spend to serve their shareholders right, and so you would think that shareholders would like the politikal spending regime, but we're hearing more and more that this is actually bad when you get to geopolitikal instability or inability to take action on the climate crisis or fundamental distrust, or companies having to choose which side they're on in order to do business. they will hear from Matt patsky why there's a really clear business case for addressing this problem from the investor perspective. so I hope that will leave you feeling clearer and more empowered as you reach out in your engagements with business coming out of here. um, One Last Thing Before We dive in, how many of you run or are related to a small business, Regional, mid-size business? okay, great. now, some people I hadn't known and some I've seen before. when we end, we'll ask Dave to give 30 seconds of what you can do. next, how many of you work for, or have family that work for, large public companies- household names- great, good, thank you. or own on the boards of? we'll have things from Maureen and and she'll summarize the task force recommendations for what you can do coming out of here, with some taking some action. and then how many of you own stok, are investors, have a mutual fund, have a retirement account? then, okay, this is one of the unexpected angles where you can take action and we'll ask Matt to summarize that at the end. so an ambitious program is. we're going to try and keep it brisk, but that's what we're hoping to to cover today. sound good, get started. all right, great, thank you, um, Dave, you are from Pennsylvania. can you see me? okay, with the light in your your eyes there? yeah, my apologies for the glare off my head for those days. yeah, so, um, retired CEO and president of the Harrisburg Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce for many years made a huge difference in your state, now retired, apparently taking it easy. yes, ask my wife, she'll, she'll tell you. now I heard great things from Shirley last night. um, so, uh, you have been worki.

[Music]. how many of you have lived in more than one city in their life? that's about 85% score. how many have you have moved in the last 12 months? slightly less, but I'm gonna just to comfort you. I'm going to show you how you normal. this is Anthony. Anthony's a early 20 software developer in France. one morning he woke up, he was looking at different websites, discovered a new one, started thinking about: okay, what if I lived somewhere else researching? and then a few months later he wrote me and- and he's now in New Zealand. he sent me a photo of him being in New Zealand, in Auckland, and working from there. now isabella is a young architectural consultant that she's been working in Dubai on this one project and on each to move to Barcelona and, being an American, obviously there are many questions about that move. that she started researching online and she's gonna move in just a few weeks. matthew is a communications person, so he really doesn't care where he works and his customers don't care, so he's a New York native. he was living there and then started contemplating: should I be somewhere else? and somehow stumbled upon researching Mexico, which he had always been interested about, but living in a country where people are toking about building walls with Mexico, you have a few preconceptions. so actually he did the research and figured out that Mexico City action matches he's way alive quite well. and now he's there. and while he's doing this research, he also discovered the to arrest in Romania is an interesting place that he was to go to next, and Andy actually had an office job in Silicon Valley. so he's working in a big emerging tik company building hardware. they have partners in China. hey, he needs to work with the OEMs and ODMs there, and his company just told him that, hey, why don't you go and hang out in Asia? so he picked up his, his girlfriend and they. they actually ended up moving to Singapore for six months just to be closer in time zones and and so to be able to do the work there. but it wasn't that his office was now there, but it was just this freedom, our liberty to move, and this is what I'm gonna tok to you about today- is that this free people move and it's inevitable and it's it's increasing trend, and I hope to explain to you why this is happening. what are the things driving that moment and also how tiknology can help that movement and the and is changing how people think about the location and eventually I'm gonna give you one factoid about what does that mean and why this is an important thing. my name is 10 Tom Geary and I'm the CEO and co-founder of teleport, a company where we think about these things a lot. the free things that are driving this seemingly obscure thing that maybe you don't think- the random act of being born somewhere- is something that will define the destiny of where you're gonna spend the rest of your life. the free things that the influencing that are the following: first of all, income has become location independent. the way people make money, the way you earn your salary: you might be a software, the oppor, whose skills are portable. so if you speak English, that you're great. that's also dopant. you probably can get the job anywhere. you might be a designer who can work remotely, or maybe you build things with your hands and now you can sell the Met seat on Etsy and all of a sudden your market is not your village but but your income can come from anywhere in the world. secondly, while income is becoming location-independent, your cost is not. if you look at an average person spending throughout their lifetime, 8090 percent of that is still super local. you're paying for housing, you're paying for taxis, you're paying for your kids school, you're gonna go to the local supermarket buy food and maybe you have, I don't know, a few stoks in a global company and you have some part of you where your money goes that is actually international. majority of it is not. so cost has not followed the trend that income has. and, firstly, we live in a mobile society and- and it's it's kind of silly to explain that in Finland, but what most people think about when you, when you hear mobile society, you think about mobile phones or sort of the devices have lost the court. this is true, but what I'm toking about here is that how mobility has actually this tiknology, tiknological change that actually made pull more mobile. so the anecdote I always tell my friends is that imagine you're a 24 year old graphic designer. you get off an airplane, you open up your computer, you keep doing the work you were doing in your previous stop, or maybe even on the plane. you have a car waiting for you at the airport, you have a place to stay for the night, but you might not know what the name of the city is yet. that was not possible 10 years ago and now it's a very, very common practike for people. so if there are these three trends colliding and people can actually choose where to live, that actually creates this world. you can one way to. you can view the world is actually a two-sided marketplace where you have, on one side, you have people, you have talent, who is looking at what is the best place for me to realize my potential, like if you're a mathematikian or an artist or a singer, like what is the place that really supports what you want to do, if you want to raise a family- their needs might be different, and so forth. and on the other side, you have places and what we found in teleports, research and working with our customers- tuna. now it bites sad and some, but nation-states don't really matter. so places, our cities and the urban areas- and nobody today know millennial would go and say that, hey, I'm moving to the United States of America. when they do, they actually say that I'm moving to New York, I'm moving to Austin, I'm moving to San Francisco, and already, by the how they name and which city and why they're going to tell you quite a bit about them. so so it's a city's game just to quantify what this world looks like, like there is data that connects these places and people, but let me share some data points about also both sides of them. there are about 1.8 billion Millennials in the world and I tried really hard when starting this company to avoid that buzz word and not worry about the Millennials at that moment. maybe I'm getting old, but although there's 1.8, if you start cutting and slicing and trying to understand which is the segment of those Millennials who have different work ethic, different behaviors, who are the ones that are the mobile ones, and the exercise we did was that we looked at how many of those Millennials live North America, European Union, in larger hubs in Asia, South America and Africa, have passports that actually allow them to move around, are doing knowledge, work-related jobs that actually are more portable across borders and speak some other like languages besides their native tongue if it's not English. and the number we got to is about three hundred fifty million. three hundred fifty million people is the sort of likely target group, this sort of pool of talent that is about to float around the world. interestingly, it's about 5% of the world population, so it's not like an excessive over over estimation, even if you are kind of conservative. but also there are some aspects about that group. for example, eighty percent of them today say in surveys that they want to work abroad at some point during their career, and about fifteen percent of them say they want to do that in the next five years. so if you want, you can imagine. there is it this, this sort of a lake filled with three hundred fifty million people, and the dam is about to burst, and at the rate of ten million persons a year. this, this group, is gonna be hanging out throughout the world, and so what we do at teleport for them is that we build software that helps them to see the world through their lens, like when they are trying to figure out where in the world they should be. they tell us a little bit about their preferences and you can go and play with it later. so I'm not

so welcome back to the Sawmill friends. according to the weatherman, winter will be here tomorrow and it's going to be pretty rough around here. the highest supposed to be, I think, to about 13 degrees, but today it's actually about 45. the highest 51 crazy weather we're having. there's a lot of things to get done today and the first thing we need to do is get on the T25 and do Samoan. yes, I'm going to do some mowing in December. I know that sounds crazy, but I have a good reason behind it. and the other thing we're going to do with the T25 is get the bucket and go get some manure. got some manure we're hauling when they were out of there right now. actually, we're going to get some Mulch and bring it down to the chicken run. so they've got fresh Mulch on the drink, as usual. showing her back to us, the most hatefulest cat on YouTube. hello, Mama, let's pull the T25 out. and the reason I'm going to do some mowing right now is because I had a big patch of grass in front of the kiln and just start growing a few weeks ago. I don't know why, friends, it just took off and started growing like it was the middle of July and it's almost it's past my ankles actually, and it's bright green. it's really, really odd. I'm not sure what's going on down there. so we're gonna head down there first and mow some grass in December- which a lot of people don't do- then we'll grab some wood chips for the chickens. [Music]- foreign [Music]. I'll tell you what: it's almost too warm for this toboggan out here. man, alive, feels like springtime out here, mowing the grass, hauling some wood chips up to the chickens- hard to believe it's gonna be 14 degrees tomorrow. we put, uh, wood chips in the chicken run and I had to pile these up by the garden. but, to be honest with you, they started composting. but I think they'll work because the chickens will just mix these up in the soil and when we clean out the run in a few months we'll have some nice compost for the garden. but inside the chicken house we started putting coffee down. that may sound crazy, but I'll show you guys here in just a second what I'm toking about. so, uh, we'll leave this part up here. my wife will take the wood chips and put them where she wants them- in the chicken run- and I'll take you guys inside with me and show you all the coffee system that we have inside the chicken house. it's pretty neat. and one more thing, or quick shout out to my friend Helen over in Virginia. we saw her at a Christmas dinner about two weeks ago. I can't tok today. it's a shocker. and we was toking to her about her chickens. so, Helen, I hope you're doing well and hope you stay warm this weekend and I hope those roosters are not giving you a hard time. tell you what I need to finish the siding on the front of the chicken house. it looks terrible. let's go in here and see what's going on. hello ladies, there they go. looks like we got a few eggs in there today. they're still laying. we're getting about 10 ads a day. oh, I need to keep my voice down. she's in there hard at work. so right here, friends is a great idea if you're raising chickens and it keeps the odor almost completely down. we got the roost right there where they sleep at night, and on this table where their manure pretty much Falls. we use recycled coffee. we get these, I think Rural King, and they're pretty cheap. for 50 pounds it's maybe ten dollars. you can kind of do it like cat litter and cleaned it up every few days and have a wheelbarrow outside, kind of dump it in there. but, guys, I'll tell you, it keeps your chicken house from smelling really bad and it smells like coffee in here, like a coffee house. it's amazing. I kind of like coming in here just to enjoy the aroma of the coffee and toking to these chickens. I know that sounds crazy, but it's true I do. I like coming in here smelling this coffee. I'll show you, guys, outside, what it looks like after we cleaned it up. or the wife cleans it up- I think she does it maybe every two or three days. so after she Scoops it out, it goes out here in this wheelbarrow and we collect it in there. once we get a good sized load, it goes up to the compost pile and this right here, friends, is what will feed us next summer. and no, we're not going to be eating chicken manure. we're going to be taking this and putting it in the garden to fertilize the soil, to grow our food. it's hard to beat chicken manure for compost in your soil, in your garden. I think the best thing is probably rabbit manure because it doesn't have to decompose, but chicken manure is probably number two. all right, guys, the next thing we're going to work on is this white oak and this pine log right behind me. we've got to cut about two feet off of both of them and here's the reason why. so you can't tell, because this Lodge has been on the ground for a couple of months. it's kind of weathered a little. I got it from a tree service and when it came into the loud yard it had two stains right here which were solid black, which means signs of metal in the log. now this is a 10 footer. hopefully, if I take off two feet and make it a eight foot log, when we do our reveal and cut off this little section, hopefully the stain will be gone and we'll get rid of the metal. if we're lucky it may be in the bottom, but you never know, it could be halfway up this log and over here we have a pretty sized White Pine. it's a 10 footer. I'm going to bring it down to an eight footer- and the reason being it's pretty rotten right here on the bottom and I think if I get rid of about two feet, which I like my Pine boards to be eight Footers anyways, we should get rid of most of this rot right here in the pith area and have a good eight foot locker for The Sawmill. keyword is: should you never know with logs, guys, it may look nice and solid right here, you take off a foot or two and it's rotten in the middle all the way up. you just never know. and to cut these two logs down, we're going to be using my Husqvarna 372 HP. I've been using this saw for about three days now. I really like it. it's got a 24 inch bar on it. I got the 28 inch light bar to go on it and it weighs a lot less. I'm looking forward to trying that one out, but my chain is not here yet for this bar, so we're going to use what we got: 24 inch bar may have to go on both sides, but we'll get it done. [Music]. I need to cut it down here in the bottom, just a few inches right there, and that will release this from the log and we can see if we got rid of the metal. hopefully we did, but you never know. [Music] foreign. [Music] friends. we got it cut down and here's the information that we have now that stain is right there, so the metal is probably still in the lodge somewhere. I doubt it was in that bottom cut. that's unfortunate, but that's the way it goes, and if you look right there at the pith in the very middle, it's also kind of grayish as well. probably got some metal right there too, and that's the way it goes sometimes. will we still Saw Mill this log? of course we will. we have a band saw mill. if I hit that metal, or when I do hit that metal, I'll pull it out of the log, I'll put me a new blade on, I'll re-sharpen the old blade when I have time and we'll be back up and running in just a few minutes. now the circle saw mills- they would turn down a log like this, because when they hit that metal with the circle saw blade that could be several thousand dollars worth of damage on that Blade. with the bandsaw mill, that's where you have that good Advantage. right there you take off your blade, put a new one on and you're back up and running in just a few minutes. in the last video somebody asked me if I resharpened my blades. we sure do. here we have the wood Miser sharpener and the setter. and also people asked if the blade gets ruined if you hit metal, as long as it's just a nail or maybe a bullet, as long as it's not a horseshoe or something like that- and I do hear about people hitting horseshoes sometimes- and it doesn't break the break off the teeth of the blade, you can put it on your sharpener, resharpen it, reset it an.
