STOP Paying for SSL! | How To Get SSL Certificate On Your Website for Free

Title: Do You Need to Pay for SSL Certificates? Free Options Explained

Hey guys, my name is Christian Taylor, and welcome back to Kramer Maine, where I like to talk about all things branding, marketing, and entrepreneurship. I've been asked several times recently about whether you should be concerned with domain companies and hosting companies claiming they offer free SSL certificates. Is this important, and what about some companies who say you get free SSL for the first year versus companies who say you get SSL forever free? What does it mean in a practical sense, and do you even need SSL on your website?

Importance of SSL:

Yes, you need SSL on your website, even if you aren't taking card numbers or having login pages where people enter usernames and passwords. The Google search algorithm prioritizes sites that have an SSL certificate. Google feels so strongly about sites having SSL that now any sites who do not have them display a not secure warning in the Google Chrome browser, where sites that offer SSL will just display the lock icon.

Options for Free SSL:

There are several options for getting free SSL certificates. Let's Encrypt is a non-profit certificate authority providing free SSL certificates to everyone. Many web hosts already work directly with Let's Encrypt to give you free SSL certificates for your website. Hosts like LightCloud, WPEngine, and DreamHost offer direct integration with Let's Encrypt, so you can simply click a button in your panel and get your free SSL certificate. However, some hosts don't offer integration for this because they would rather sell you an SSL certificate and make more money. But there's actually a workaround to this problem, and that's to use CloudFlare.

CloudFlare:

CloudFlare is a free content delivery network, security firewall, and external DNS system that offers a number of options to get SSL on your website for free, even for hosts that don't support Let's Encrypt. Just by setting up CloudFlare with your website, you can use what's called flexible SSL, which is sufficient enough for the browser and Google to recognize your site as secure and present the lock icon. This method of free protection is easy to set up and is perfectly legitimate if you're using SSL to display the lock and satisfy the Google algorithm. But if you are taking card numbers or having a member login area on your website, it's recommended to have a full SSL solution.

Paying for SSL:

If you go to a site like SSL Escom, you'll see these different brands of SSL certificates for different prices. However, an SSL certificate is an SSL certificate, and when we take a look at the spec sheet, we see that both certificates have the same exact encryption and security standards. The only reason to pay for an SSL certificate at all is to get insurance on it if you are doing high-risk stuff like making an online banking platform or something. Even then, wouldn't you have liability insurance on a way higher level? That being said, if you still want to pay for an SSL certificate, GoDaddy offers a $100,000 warranty for their $80 a year SSL certificate, which is the cheapest one you can buy through GoDaddy.

There's no reason to pay for an SSL certificate when there are so many free options available. Let's Encrypt and CloudFlare are great solutions for getting SSL on your website without having to pay a dime. If you're doing high-risk stuff, you might want to consider paying for an SSL certificate to get insurance on it. However, for most people, there's no need to pay for an SSL certificate.
