yes, um, so there are trends, uh, it's, it's actually quite, quite funny, uh, from turbo to prestige. but now our favorite theme is impulse, um, from archetype, um, the. the story behind archetype is that, uh, people who used to work for shopify actually, and, um, they really built the themes that you want them to build. they, they're just awesome and they have good support. they've, um, they're rather um fast in terms of performance, the themes: they have a lot of um features and they're usually like right on top of the tiknological curve. what's possible with the themes, however, at the moment, because you you're probably aware of that, uh, shopify 2.0 came out and with that um shopify released a new standard theme, don, which really breaks records in terms of performance and speed, and we don't see those numbers yet with the um paid themes, also not with imports, okay, so, yeah, let me just wrap this up. so, okay. so you basically have two favorite themes. let's say: impulse as a paid theme, done as a free theme. um, yeah, since we have a long friendship, you can have two votes. i mean impulse if, if you don't have coding capabilities, uh, use impulse. if you do have calling capabilities and can customize the theme a little bit, then you can use storm. okay, that's great. and yeah, my follow-up question would have been: why, in partikular? so you said, okay, dawn in terms of page speed, impulse in terms of aesthetiks, features and everything. and, yeah, because they they think about what merchants need, what developers need, um, okay, i think that's a great perspective. um, yeah, patrick, thanks so much for joining today and, yeah, we see each other very soon, i guess. thank you for the opportunity. see ya, um. all right, jay, then. thanks so much for taking the time today. um, would you like to introduce us? have a bit? yeah, my name is jay. i'm from cincinnati, ohio. i originally went to school for accounting and philosophy, uh, but got bored out of my mind with the accounting so started building websites in my free time. it's been about a decade since, so i've been building websites ever since. uh built around 500 plus shopify stores websites- not just exclusively shopify other cms's as well, actually, uh, but on 500 plus stores helped companies do about 100 million in online sales. uh, i've done a lot with the shopify ecosystem in partikular. i've been a speaker on their blog. i've been a guest speaker at amazon, so really just lived and breathed in commerce the past decade. i describe myself as a boutique agency, so i have a small team. it's me and seven other people- time, uh, so we have a small crew and we do everything from store design, development, seo, ad campaigns- uh, really just kind of ecommerce full stack. so set up landing pages, help them convert, drive more traffic to them, help them retain, uh and upsell existing customers- all that fun stuff. so okay, yeah, sounds very impressive, awesome, um and uh, okay, so this is like a full service marketing agency or not only marketing ecommerce in general? you said, um, 500 plus websites. that's awesome. um, do you usually like build custom sites from scratch or do you use any uh pre-built themes and then customize from there? yeah, good question. you know, i would say this is probably one of the single biggest questions or concerns that come up when i tok to a new client. it's like: what theme are we going to use? what theme are we going to use? my preference is to keep it pretty simple and bare bones and use the shopify native ones. so previously that was debut, now that's dawn 2.0. i like to just keep it as minimal bloat as possible and then typically, my process is to come up with a design concept for desktop and mobile, do that in like photoshop, figma, xd files, confirm that and then build off the base template of uh like. lately it's done 2.0. previously it was, you know, okay, yeah, i think that's a great choice, especially: oh, we can, we can actually tok about that. um, so why would you say, is the dawn theme or why is it great? in partikular, do you got any? do you have any preference. so why not use any premium theme? or, yeah, you could. you can just think it's because i'm apprehensive to pick other third party themes just because you want long-term congruence. so it's something that's safe and secure of like, hey, this is the built by shopify and recommended uh like de facto one that they provide. it's pretty sound infrastructure to build on top of. you definitely don't like choose a really indie theme and then have them disappear or just not compile with update. so that's a. that's part of like the framework of thinking about long-term uh viability with it. um, and then i think it just comes with a lot of minimal bloat. so it comes with all the main core features and upgrades that you would want that shopify is offering and providing, but without having a lot of extra bells and whistles that can negatively impact your speed. um, just might not be necessary. so i try to keep it very minimal where possible, uh, and just remove bloat whenever we can. okay, so, okay. so you said site speed is a concern. um, keep it as lean as possible. and long-term maintenance by the vendor or by the creator, which is shopify, namely, um, okay, that's, that's good reasons. um, would you also say john dawn is a um good general purpose theme or do you have, like, uh, different theme preferences for different niches and vertikals? um, not really, especially now. yeah, i mean, uh, just seeing, like, what websites convert. we do a decent amount of cro and things like that. like it is pretty well set up outside of the box that you don't have to do a lot of customization. uh, having the meta fields and things like that is nice as well, um, but we still it ultimately is a case-by-case basis. so i mean, we've worked with tons of different products and services all across the board and as you work through and with them, with those, uh, entrepreneurs like one-on-one get to know their business. like, we do try to provide a custom experience, and so sometimes we will modify that just to really facilitate that. but by and

Structuring and customizing product pages in Online Store 2.0 Shopify themes

hi everyone. this is tim from mile hi themes and in this video i'm just going to quickly run through how to structure your product page and also tok a little bit about using custom product templates. so i'm looking at a standard product page that we have in our showtime demo. this will be similar in our other themes, but for this partikular video we're looking at showtime. as you can see, we've got kind of basic product information up here at the top, where the cart button is some other stuff, and then we have some sections down below using the new sections everywhere- functionality that comes with online store 2.0 and the latest version of our themes. so i'm just going to briefly show you how this is set up and how you can control how this looks. so over here i have a clean dev version of the theme that i'm going to be messing around with. i'm going to click customize here and i'm going to use this drop down to go to a product page. now you'll notike that there could be a few custom product templates in here already in your theme version, but we're just going to look at the default product for now and this is what every product page in your store will look like out of the box. so for our default product template for this partikular theme, we've added a few sections already and then this: this information obviously will be there on every product page and it will update to show the details of that partikular product. so we have an image of a text section here, we have some recommended products and we have a gallery down here. so first of all we're just going to tok about the right side here of this product information. you see that there's this product information section here that you can toggle on and off and there's all of these different features enabled. product title is obviously the title, price, variant selector- all that's pretty standard. we've got a stok status here. you'll notike that. you can turn these on and off, turn off the display. if you click on one of them, you'll see this option to remove the block over here and then some additional settings will show up over here. you can drag these around to put things in different positions. like if you wanted the stok status to appear right below the product title, you can drag it so it appears there. if you wanted to add some additional features that are included with your theme, you can click add block and then you see all the different options in this case. there's quite a few different things you can add to layout this area of the product page. we'll tok about a few of them here, so you can see that most of these are pretty straightforward as far as determining what it is. if you wanted to add a custom text blocks, there's the quantity selector, pickup availability- if you allow your customers to pick up the products at your store, product rating would be: if you're using the shopify reviews app, you can add some accordions of text. so if you have a long block of text that you want to show for the product description, you can show it in an accordion. we've got several different methods of accordions here. it's regular text. you can show page content. you can create a specifications guide. you can just show the product description in an accordion. or you can show a contact form. if you want users to be able to ask questions, we've got a pop-up that you might use for a size guide or something like that. some trust icons, custom images, specifications- lots of different things to play around with, so you can add these as needed. let's go ahead and add an accordion for description, and this is just going to show your product description in an accordion here. so that's kind of a handy way to do it, especially if you have a really long description. so again, you can drag and drop these around. you can add additional blocks, so it's very flexible, and this should be the case in any of our themes. there should be quite a few different options to play with here so you can see how that works. and then if you select one of them- for example, i selected variant selector- i can choose if i wanted these to display as drop down menus or i can have them display as buttons. if you enable the buttons in this partikular theme and you've selected variant images for all of your variants, then the image will also show in these buttons. so that's a handy way to distinguish between colors and other options. so, without being saved, i'm going to move on to look at the sections a little bit. we have another video on creating custom templates, but we'll briefly cover it again here, just in case. so with the online store 2.0 features, you now have the ability to add sections to every product page, or every other page for that matter. in this case, you can see we've got some different. the product information is obviously just the, the information that's associated with the partikular product you're on. all of these other sections would be statik. so if we populated this image with text section, for example, with an image and some text, and save this, since we're dealing with the default product option, everything down here would be statik and would show the same thing on all the products. so you'd see the same image here, you'd see the same text here. if you didn't want to do that, then you could create a custom product template. to do that, you can just click this drop down menu again, go to products and click create template. so you probably want to do this before you start making a bunch of changes to your default product page, because by default, the product page will probably be pretty basic and won't have a lot of sections, because you may not need those. so first create a custom template. we'll call this custom product four. it's because i think we have a couple other ones in here already. so i'm gonna go ahead and create that. i'm gonna base it on the default product. so it just basically creates a duplicate- duplicate of the current product template i'm looking at and now i can play around and not have to worry about affecting every single product in my store. so now i can go ahead and add new sections to this. let's add a gallery, let's add a background video, for example, and i'm not going to just populate all these, but of course, if you wanted to, you just click on the actual heading of the section for the global settings for that section and then you can click on the blocks in here to change the settings, select your images and other settings, depending on what kind of section it is. so let's go ahead and save this. and now there's one final step. before we can start seeing these, these changes on any products, we need to go ahead and assign this template that we just created custom product for to the products that we want to assign it to. so to do this, i'm going to go ahead and exit out of here and i'm going to go to products in here. so, ah, up here i'm going to choose a product. i'll just choose this bold placemats, and over here you can see that right now it's using the default product template. i'm going to go ahead and assign custom product 4 to that and save. and now, if i go and view this product, you'll see all those custom. you'll choose all those settings that i set over here, including the description, being an accordion, you've got all the sections that we added just now, including the hero background video, and that will appear. so, if you like, you can now apply this to multiple products. just know that this information, including the image and text and whatever we select for all of these, is going to be the same for all of the products that have that template assigned. if you wanted to have the same design but have different content for these, then you would have to duplicate the template and create a unique one for each product. there's also other ways to do this, using metafields, which i Shopify Theme Build: Theme Cart JS Intro - Episode 6

hey everybody, i'm sam webb and this is part six of my shopify theme build series. we're getting really close to finishing up some of the simple templates and we're starting to get to a point where i'm going to want to add a bit of javascript to to kind of take it to the next level. one of those areas is the cart, and today we're going to be adding a library that shopify built called theme cart, to help with that. the first thing we want to do is we want to go over to npm, which is a package manager for javascript, and we want to look up shopify. so we're gonna, if you look at his name right here at shopify slash theme hyphen cart, and this is shopify's javascript library made for interacting with the cart. now, before we get into implementation, let's just have a quick look at this documentation. so we've got the getting started here and we'll be looking at that in a minute, but before that, let's let's scroll down here and look at some of the different methods we have available. we've got this get state function- that that just gets the state of the cart, so it gets all the information about the cart, and then, further down, we've got add item. we've got update item and remove item, clear items, and so these are just a bunch of different functions that will allow us to either update the cart or get information about the car. so if you ever have any questions about how any of this works, make sure you come back to this. now, all these things that are in red like key here, these link out to somewhere else, right, so get item and it says pass in key, which isn't explained here. doesn't make sense, and so if we click key really quickly it takes us to the object documentation for a line item, and so this is why i was so big on a previous video about this object page is because a lot of things end up coming back to just looking at the objects and and getting understanding about what properties are on these objects. going back to that theme card documentation, scroll back up to the top to getting started so that we can get this added into our store within our project. in the terminal we need to add: add this package with yarn add and then, within the files that we're going to use it, we need to import it. first things first, let's do the yarn ad at shopify slash theme cart as we see we've got, we got our successes there. so you see that it's been installed, we see that version 4.0.2 has been installed and now we're good to go. we're not really going to be making any changes to the front end right now. i just want to get this added for later use, because when it comes to adding products to cart, updating our cart and just different things that i'm going to be doing with the car, in the long run we're going to work, we're going to end up needing this librarian, so it's good to get it installed early, open up, inspect. we're going to be looking at the console and we're going to be doing most of our most. most of today is going to be within the console and within the code. now, before we write any code, i want to mention that before, before you're going to be able to do this, there needs to be an update to the workflow. now, if you're start, if you're, if you're using workshop and you're using this specific workflow, if you, if you're creating a new workflow after this video, then you shouldn't need to do this step. but for anybody who already started working with their workflow before today, you're going to need to to make a quick update. and so let's open up workflow and let's go into tasks and theme, and so there are two lines that you need to update: line number. so line number four, where we have this const resolve and then everything else. we're going to need to add this line and then, within plugins- before this was an empty array- we're going to need to add this resolve function here and what this will do is it will allow- it will allow the workflow to resolve any node modules that you're using. if you have a shopify plus and you do have checkout enabled, then you'll also want to do that same exact thing within checkout. and also, if i actually stop running this for a second, you're going to need to. you're also going to need to install this, and so, the same way that we just installed theme cart, we're also going to need to install this. so i already have it installed. but what you would do is yarn, add and then paste that in, and then you, if you want this to be a dev dependency, you can do dash dash dev. and if we look into packagejson, you'll see that we have a plug-in node resolve at version 11 within dev dependencies, right, and you'll also see that within normal dependencies we have a shopify theme card up here. so now, moving on to actually implementing this, we can go into source and let's open up scripts and themejs, but what we're going to do is we want to test cart now. in the long run we're going to get more into javascript later on and into how you should be formatting your javascript and how you should be structuring these folders, but for now we're just gonna do everything within themejs, just because we're just testing this out, but we're not actually using it yet. so if we go back to the documentation, we have the import star as cart from shopify themed cars. let's copy that and paste it in here. and before we save this, let me yarn, start again, just to get this back to watching file changes. and so now i want to see if, if this works at all. so let's say, consoleinfo, cart, refresh the page. now we see we've got this, this object here that comes after the example code, and so that's all the functions that come with theme card. and so let's try one of them and i'll say, uh, cart, dot, dot, get state. now run that function. now, before i run this, this is a promise based library, so what we're going to get back is just a promise, refresh that. you see it says promise and status is pending, and so this isn't the proper way that you would want to to display the information from this. instead, what we would do is if i get rid of this and i say cart dot, and now when i do cart dot, you can see that i get these, this information about the different functions that are on it, which is pretty handy. so i'll pick git state then, and then we just say data, consoleinfo, data, right, refresh that, and now we see an object. that is all the actual cart data. so we've got our attributes, which we don't have any on our cart right now. we've got any discounts that are applied and since we have- uh at this, today we have i have a black friday, cyber monday sale running and so we've got this 15 percent off sale here that you can see that that's added to the cart. if we go down here, we see item car, item count two. so we got two items in the cart and you could see, we can see all the pricing and and all the different information on the cart. one thing you may run into is third parties who who need to add products to cart for whatever reason and you don't want the process to be difficult, right, and so, to make it easy, what you can do is you can expose this library to the window. so right now, if we go back to the code, right, you'll see that we have this cart object that has a bunch of information on it. but if i were to type cart in in here in the browser, we get an error, a reference error. card is not defined, it doesn't exist, and that's because the way this workflow works, it does a bunch of different things to transpile the code and it bundles it up into this one kind of large function and then all that information within that function is kind of contained within it. right, you can't reach into it to get the information, but there are ways to to reveal things: window dot, cart. i'm going to do a capital c equals cart. if i save that and go back to the front end, first i'm going to go window that cart, just to show you that it doesn't exist, right, and then, but if i refresh the page, do the same thing. now we have the same get state and now you can run tests within the browser. you actually don't have to put window, you can just do cart dot get state data. there we go that, get state about that, then it states a function and then dive.
