Hey guys, Yvonne here at Evonmana.com. In this video, I want to show you how to create expanded text ads with Google Ads. Now that they're slowly trying to phase them out, if you click on the little plus sign in your Google Ads campaign dashboard, you will no longer see a tag stats here. And if you go into your specific ad group and you click on the plus sign, you just see a responsive search ad. Now, if you do click on responsive search ad and you select your ad group, you might see the option to use expanded text ads, but sometimes you won't. And eventually, it looks like Google will completely remove this option. So what do you do? How do you create these text ads without this option? So let me cancel this here really quickly just to show you. So let's use this as an example. So we're gonna get straight into it. This is a text ad. So let's suppose we want this headline here: RSVP to get our demo booth. We want this to be in headline one. We want Get started right now to be in headline two. And we want A quick and simple process in headline three. So basically, we're gonna recreate this using the responsive search ad format. Okay, and that's what I'm gonna show you right here. So we're gonna click on the plus sign, click on responsive search ad, select our ad group. So this is pre-populated because I already have a text ad. But if you don't, then you're going to simply write these things out. So the first thing you want to do is write out what you want in each headline spot. So if you want this in headline one, write that out. If you want this in headline two, write that out. And I think actually for us, this was a headline two, right? This is the call to action. We want this to be in headline two. So the way we create these text ads is we're gonna utilize these pins. So for RSVP to get demo at our booth, I'm gonna click on this pin and say, Show only in position one. And now, this thing here, this headline will only show in position one, just like a standard text ad where whatever you write in the first spot always shows up there. Get started right now, we're gonna pin this in the second position. And now, this will only show up in the second headline right here. And then this one, we're going to pin in the third. So what we just did, guys, is basically a text ad because now nothing is random. Google's not going to be testing this being in headline three and this being in headline one. We set exactly where we want this to be. And then for the description, we do the same thing. So if I don't remember what we said for our original one, but let's say we want this to be in our first description spot, we're gonna click here, show in position one. And then this one, we're gonna say show in position two. And voila, we basically created this expanded text ad because we said where we want each of these specific headlines and descriptions to be in. So then if you want to split test this, you can either save the ad and you can just create another option where you test different things. Or what you could do is if you go here, you click on edit, you could enter. So instead of Get started right now, you say, for example, Sign up right now, for instance. And then here you can also pin this in position two, and now these two will be split tested. And you could do it that way. But that's basically how you create a text ad. As you can see here, you have full control using the responsive search ad format. Google has announced that starting from the end of June 2022, you will no longer be able to create expanded text ads in your campaigns. Instead, you will only be able to create responsive search ads.
Now, I know June 2022 may seem like a long way off, but it's always good to be prepared. In this video, I'm going to cover five important things. First, I'll show you the differences between expanded text ads and responsive search ads. Then, I'll explain how you can create expanded text ads before Google's deadline. I'll also show you how to create a responsive search ad that is similar to an expanded text ad. Next, I'll explain how to review the performance of your ads. And finally, I'll discuss some things you should test.
Let's start by looking at the differences between expanded text ads and responsive search ads. Expanded text ads are made up of three headlines and two description lines. They appear in the order they're written and allow you to write an ad exactly how it will appear to people as they're searching on Google. On the other hand, responsive search ads are different. You can write up to 15 headlines and four descriptions, and Google's machine learning will automatically combine them when people are searching. This means that different people can see different versions of your ad.
Now, let's head to my demo account to see these differences in action. In this ad group, I have a responsive search ad and two expanded text ads. It's a bit hard to see the difference between them here, so let's take a closer look. If we click on the edit icon for one of the expanded text ads and select Edit, we can see that it includes a final URL, three headlines, a display path, and two description lines. On the right, we can see a preview of the ad, with the headlines and description lines appearing in the order we've entered them.
Now, let's close this ad and click on the edit icon for the responsive search ad. As we scroll down, we can see that there are 15 headlines and four description lines. Google Ads will automatically combine these elements to create the ad that someone sees when they're searching for the keywords you're bidding on. In the preview on the right, we can see one potential combination of these elements. By clicking the arrows, we can preview other combinations. So, while expanded text ads are always shown as you've written them in your account, responsive search ads can show headlines and descriptions in any order or combination.
Now that we understand the differences between the two types of ads, let's talk about how you can create expanded text ads before Google's deadline. You can still create expanded text ads in Google Ads, and you will be able to do so until the end of June 2022. After the deadline, your existing expanded text ads will continue to run, and you will be able to pause and unpause them, but you won't be able to create new ones. To create a new expanded text ad, simply click the plus sign in your Google Ads account, choose Responsive Search Ad, and then click the link that says Use Expanded Text Ads Instead. You'll then be able to enter the necessary information for your ad, such as the final URL, headlines, display path, and descriptions. Once you're happy with your ad, just save it.
In addition to creating expanded text ads, you can also create a responsive search ad that mimics a text ad. To do this, click the plus sign in your Google Ads account, choose Responsive Search Ad, and then use the Pinning option. This allows you to pin or save headlines and descriptions to specific positions in your ad. By doing this, you can ensure that the headlines always appear in the same order, while the descriptions change. This way, you can mimic the format of a text ad with a responsive search ad.
Now, let's talk about reviewing the performance of your ads. It's important to regularly analyze how your ads are performing and make adjustments accordingly. I recommend testing at least one text ad against your responsive search ad. This can be done by creating an expanded text ad or by mimicking a text ad with a responsive search ad, as we discussed earlier. When reviewing the performance of your ads, look at metrics such as click-through rate, conversions, and conversion rate. If you don't see these metrics in your account, you can add them by selecting Columns and then Modify Columns. From there, you can browse through the different metrics and dimensions you can add or search for specific ones. By comparing the performance of your ads, you can make informed decisions about which ones to keep and which ones to remove.
In terms of testing ads, I recommend having two or three ads in each of your ad groups. Start by testing a responsive search ad with all 15 headlines and four descriptions, along with one or two text ads. Begin by testing different messages and calls to action, and then experiment with smaller changes like punctuation and capitalization. Google recommends combining responsive search ads with broad match keywords and an automated bidding strategy. However, it's important to note that this might not work well for all accounts. I recommend experimenting and testing before applying this strategy to all of your campaigns and ad groups.
If you want to test different variations of your responsive search ads, you can use the Ad Variation feature in Google Ads. This allows you to test changes to your headlines, descriptions, URLs, and more. Additionally, you have the option of creating campaign experiments to test even more changes to your campaigns. Last month, Google got rid of the option to create expanded text ads, which were the basic plain old text ads. Instead, they replaced them with responsive search ads. Expanded text ads allowed you to set exactly the headlines and descriptions you wanted, while responsive search ads give you the option to input a number of headlines and description variations, and Google will rotate them to find the best combination.
Expanded text ads were much loved by marketers, including myself because they allowed you to have complete control over your ads and test variations yourself, so that you know what gets the best results.
Why Google decided to remove these is anyone's guess, but since they've been heading in the direction of giving users less and less control over their ads for some time now, it's not entirely surprising. However, it is still possible to create ads that behave in the same manner as expanded text ads within Google Ads, giving you control over your headlines and descriptions and how they show. So in this video, I'm going to show you how to do that.
Here's how to create expanded text ads in Google Ads:
1. Go into your Google Ads account.
2. Assuming you already have a campaign, go to the Ads and Extensions section.
3. Click on Ads.
4. Click the plus icon to create a new ad.
5. Select Responsive Search Ad.
6. Choose the ad group and campaign you want to put them in.
7. Input your URL, display path, and other details.
8. Now, to create ads that behave like the old expanded text ads, you need to set three headlines.
- Write your first headline and pin it to position one.
- Write your second headline and pin it to position two.
- Write your third headline and pin it to position three.
- This way, Google can't shift the headlines around and has to show them in the order you set.
9. Do the same for the descriptions.
- Write your first description and pin it to position one.
- Write your second description and pin it to position two.
- Google has to show the descriptions in the order you set.
10. Hit save, and your ad is good to go.
If you want to test different versions, you can go through the same process and create another ad. Just remember that Google only allows you to do three responsive search ads per ad group.

You don't have to start from scratch with each Responsive Search Ad. You can create three ads that are completely different from each other, and then copy and paste them into each ad group. This way, you only need to make a few tweaks instead of rewriting everything.
