00:00:00 00:00:05 what's up beautiful people it's nas here
00:00:02 00:00:08 with another video today we have
00:00:05 00:00:10 jonathan and the channel uh we're gonna
00:00:08 00:00:12 be toking about how jonathan is doing
00:00:10 00:00:14 55 000 a day
00:00:12 00:00:17 a day
00:00:14 00:00:19 with email marketing so welcome to
00:00:17 00:00:20 nazaroth's channel yeah thank you so
00:00:19 00:00:22 much for having me it's a real pleasure
00:00:20 00:00:24 yeah that's awesome so tell me a little
00:00:22 00:00:25 bit about yourself how you got into
00:00:24 00:00:27 email marketing i know we toked about
00:00:25 00:00:29 it a little bit before this but tell me
00:00:27 00:00:31 a little bit about how you got to start
00:00:29 00:00:34 it yeah so i uh have been in business
00:00:31 00:00:37 for four years now uh i started back in
00:00:34 00:00:39 20 like late 2017 early 2018. um i was
00:00:37 00:00:40 in college at the time and i just
00:00:39 00:00:41 decided that i wanted to build a
00:00:40 00:00:42 business and i was kind of hopping
00:00:41 00:00:43 around between a bunch of different
00:00:42 00:00:45 things and i decided you know what the
00:00:43 00:00:46 next thing that i start yeah is going to
00:00:45 00:00:48 be the thing that i stik with and i
00:00:46 00:00:50 didn't care how long it took i just
00:00:48 00:00:51 wanted to you know really stay with one
00:00:50 00:00:54 thing and so that happened to be
00:00:51 00:00:56 ecommerce i saw a youtube ad from some
00:00:54 00:00:58 kid that had a lambo and he's like oh my
00:00:56 00:00:58 goodness
00:01:02 00:01:05 that's the life i want so i decided you
00:01:04 00:01:08 know what okay this is the thing i'm
00:01:05 00:01:10 gonna go all in on this so i started uh
00:01:08 00:01:12 initially with drop shipping um the
00:01:10 00:01:13 first month i lost about two to three
00:01:12 00:01:15 thousand dollars which at the time was
00:01:13 00:01:16 like everything that i had yeah you know
00:01:15 00:01:18 devastated i was working at a call
00:01:16 00:01:19 center going to school full time and
00:01:18 00:01:21 that was like all my money i remember my
00:01:19 00:01:22 friends and my family being like
00:01:21 00:01:24 jonathan what are you what the hell are
00:01:22 00:01:26 you doing don't spend your money on this
00:01:24 00:01:28 like just stay in school you're a smart
00:01:26 00:01:29 kid you're good to go and i'm like no i
00:01:28 00:01:31 said i'm going to stik with this until
00:01:29 00:01:32 i make it work so three months later i
00:01:31 00:01:34 ended up breaking even i started
00:01:32 00:01:35 catching up on something
00:01:34 00:01:36 had a little bit of the money in the
00:01:35 00:01:38 bank account i was like okay cool like
00:01:36 00:01:41 i'm moving in the right direction within
00:01:38 00:01:43 six months i hit six figures there we go
00:01:41 00:01:45 it was a steep incline yeah i learned a
00:01:43 00:01:46 lot during that time period what i
00:01:45 00:01:48 didn't realize is that net profit's the
00:01:46 00:01:50 thing that actually matters not the
00:01:48 00:01:51 gross revenue yep um and so i didn't
00:01:50 00:01:53 really keep a lot of 100 000 but it
00:01:51 00:01:56 really opened my eyes to the possibility
00:01:53 00:01:57 of econ yeah so from there
00:01:56 00:01:59 i decided okay i'm dropping out of
00:01:57 00:02:00 school i'm quitting my job i'm going all
00:01:59 00:02:03 in on this and i just decided to bet on
00:02:00 00:02:05 myself and that was like i said about
00:02:03 00:02:07 three and a half years ago i built up an
00:02:05 00:02:08 e-commerce brand sold that uh and then i
00:02:07 00:02:10 was kind of in a transitionary phase
00:02:08 00:02:12 where i wasn't super sure what i was
00:02:10 00:02:13 wanting to do and i had a couple of my
00:02:12 00:02:15 buddies that were in the ecommerce space
00:02:13 00:02:17 saying hey you know can you run our
00:02:15 00:02:19 email uh because i was doing that for
00:02:17 00:02:21 myself and that was a big way on how i
00:02:19 00:02:22 was making my ads profitable uh and so i
00:02:21 00:02:24 ran it for one friend and then he
00:02:22 00:02:25 recommended me to the next person and
00:02:24 00:02:27 they recommend it to me the next person
00:02:25 00:02:28 and before i knew it i had like four or
00:02:27 00:02:30 five people that i was doing email for
00:02:28 00:02:32 and i was like okay i guess this is a
00:02:30 00:02:34 this is it that's what i'm gonna go i'm
00:02:32 00:02:37 gonna do email marketing so you kind of
00:02:34 00:02:39 the business chose to chose you yeah and
00:02:37 00:02:41 choose a business gotcha that's pretty
00:02:39 00:02:43 cool so question um you said that you
00:02:41 00:02:45 were doing a lot of your profit with
00:02:43 00:02:47 email marketing was it that like because
00:02:45 00:02:49 i i've heard that a lot with econ people
00:02:47 00:02:51 that they say hey we don't make
00:02:49 00:02:52 like you know with ads we're not
00:02:51 00:02:54 necessarily making profit but a lot of
00:02:52 00:02:56 our profit is coming with emails is that
00:02:54 00:02:59 the way you were going about it
00:02:56 00:03:01 yeah absolutely i i was not entirely
00:02:59 00:03:02 breaking even i was i was having a slim
00:03:01 00:03:04 profit margin
00:03:02 00:03:06 you know so it would be like 10 15 but
00:03:04 00:03:08 it wasn't anything crazy yeah then i
00:03:06 00:03:10 would get on an additional 10 to 15 from
00:03:08 00:03:11 email marketing so
00:03:10 00:03:13 that's going to be things that's pretty
00:03:11 00:03:14 good actually margin when it comes to
00:03:13 00:03:16 ecom because yeah the margin is really
00:03:14 00:03:18 tight with the ecoms yeah it can be it
00:03:16 00:03:19 can be but that was also an earlier time
00:03:18 00:03:22 period where facebook was a little bit
00:03:19 00:03:24 better yeah a little bit better yeah so
00:03:22 00:03:26 yeah but um yeah with that it was really
00:03:24 00:03:27 you know of course going to be like the
00:03:26 00:03:29 welcome series and building that up and
00:03:27 00:03:32 getting people on your email list and
00:03:29 00:03:34 then just really leveraging the um the
00:03:32 00:03:36 po pre and post purchase emails so
00:03:34 00:03:38 pre-purchase is like a banned in
00:03:36 00:03:39 checkout anybody that's kind of moving
00:03:38 00:03:40 through your funnel and you're saying
00:03:39 00:03:42 hey do you still want this yeah and then
00:03:40 00:03:44 on the post purchase is saying hey
00:03:42 00:03:47 because you bought this do you also want
00:03:44 00:03:49 this ah so you send them
00:03:47 00:03:51 so like just so i get educated a little
00:03:49 00:03:52 bit i'm guessing this is what you do so
00:03:51 00:03:54 like you know the simple things that we
00:03:52 00:03:56 set up is just like sending three four
00:03:54 00:03:59 emails just for ben and recovery right
00:03:56 00:04:01 like hey you forgot something hey us
00:03:59 00:04:02 again like you know sitting giving a
00:04:01 00:04:04 discount or whatever to come back so
00:04:02 00:04:06 you're saying that you
00:04:04 00:04:08 you do that and on top of that there's
00:04:06 00:04:09 like more emails that you guys are
00:04:08 00:04:10 sending but i'm guessing is like 10
00:04:09 00:04:12 times better than like normal emails
00:04:10 00:04:13 that you guys are sending right yeah so
00:04:12 00:04:16 you know we definitely have a lot of
00:04:13 00:04:17 strategies on how we do it okay um i i
00:04:16 00:04:19 could get kind of nerdy on it so if i
00:04:17 00:04:21 get too in-depth it's okay go ahead
00:04:19 00:04:22 let's just like learn a little bit you
00:04:21 00:04:24 know i'm sure like a lot of people that
00:04:22 00:04:25 are watching this also into e-com so
00:04:24 00:04:27 it's good too for them to also learn
00:04:25 00:04:29 about like hey how can i you know
00:04:27 00:04:31 increase my you know email marketing is
00:04:29 00:04:32 just not
00:04:31 00:04:34 something that i'm like good at you know
00:04:32 00:04:35 yeah so it's good to have someone that
00:04:34 00:04:37 knows what they're doing yeah absolutely
00:04:35 00:04:38 so then we'll we'll tok about the
00:04:37 00:04:39 abandonment series and i'll tok about
00:04:38 00:04:40 post purchases yeah let's tok about
00:04:39 00:04:42 abandonment series i call it an
00:04:40 00:04:44 abandonment web so there's four
00:04:42 00:04:46 different flows okay okay so there is a
00:04:44 00:04:47 side abandonment okay uh there is a
00:04:46 00:04:49 browse abandonment there's abandoned
00:04:47 00:04:52 cart there's a band at checkout okay so
00:04:49 00:04:54 it sounds complicated it's really not if
00:04:52 00:04:55 you look at a funnel
00:04:54 00:04:56 people are moving through different
00:04:55 00:04:57 steps in the funnel
00:04:56 00:04:59 with each of those things that i just
00:04:57 00:05:01 listed it's just a different step within
00:04:59 00:05:02 the funnel so site abandonment is
00:05:01 00:05:04 basically somebody who looks at the
00:05:02 00:05:06 website but doesn't look at a product
00:05:04 00:05:08 browse abandonment is somebody who looks
00:05:06 00:05:11 at the website looks at a product and
00:05:08 00:05:12 doesn't add to cart and then add to cart
00:05:11 00:05:14 is they add to cart but they don't
00:05:12 00:05:16 initiate checkout and then abandon
00:05:14 00:05:17 checkout is they leave the checkout so
00:05:16 00:05:19 you see what i'm saying no i said so at
00:05:17 00:05:21 what point you get their emails if
00:05:19 00:05:24 you're if they're just looking at the
00:05:21 00:05:25 product that's a fantastik question yeah
00:05:24 00:05:27 so it's it's going to be one of three
00:05:25 00:05:28 ways it's either going to be directly
00:05:27 00:05:31 through a pop-up okay um it could be
00:05:28 00:05:33 through a footer
00:05:31 00:05:34 yeah or it could be in the checkout and
00:05:33 00:05:36 so site abandonment and browse
00:05:34 00:05:38 abandonment those are a little bit
00:05:36 00:05:39 trickier it's typically for people that
00:05:38 00:05:41 are coming back
00:05:39 00:05:42 but the abandoned cart and abandoned
00:05:41 00:05:44 checkout are going to be more so for
00:05:42 00:05:47 people that are there for the first time
00:05:44 00:05:49 gotcha that's crazy that's how like
00:05:47 00:05:50 inten like how
00:05:49 00:05:54 like there are so many ways to actually
00:05:50 00:05:56 do it okay cool um and i could dive a
00:05:54 00:05:57 little bit deeper on it so yeah side
00:05:56 00:05:59 abandonment and browse abandonment with
00:05:57 00:06:01 those two because the audience isn't
00:05:59 00:06:02 super engaged quite yet we're just
00:06:01 00:06:04 trying to loop them back into the
00:06:02 00:06:06 process just notifying them hey you
00:06:04 00:06:07 forgot this but then with an abandoned
00:06:06 00:06:10 cart and a band at checkout we're going
00:06:07 00:06:11 to be giving them an offer right
00:06:10 00:06:13 because they're deeper in the funnel
00:06:11 00:06:15 like offer like a discount like a
00:06:13 00:06:18 discount yeah okay yeah we like adding
00:06:15 00:06:20 some sort of a um obviously like a
00:06:18 00:06:22 percentage or a dollar amount then we
00:06:20 00:06:24 might also add like a time constraint
00:06:22 00:06:26 where the discount might be available
00:06:24 00:06:28 for 12 hours or 24 hours
00:06:26 00:06:29 to really give them a little bit of
00:06:28 00:06:30 pressure to kind of force them through
00:06:29 00:06:32 the funnel
00:06:30 00:06:34 um so that's like the front end of it
00:06:32 00:06:36 there's more to it but that's kind of
00:06:34 00:06:39 like the basics um on the back end what
00:06:36 00:06:41 we found is uh with the thank you email
00:06:39 00:06:42 a few big things that we focus on is
00:06:41 00:06:44 just one getting them to not have
00:06:42 00:06:45 buyer's remorse
00:06:44 00:06:48 because that's very common right so you
00:06:45 00:06:50 want to reduce those refunds if you can
00:06:48 00:06:51 at all yeah and then two you could go
00:06:50 00:06:53 through and um
00:06:51 00:06:55 insert some sort of a cross-sell so just
00:06:53 00:06:57 an additional product that you could go
00:06:55 00:06:59 through and sell so a lot of people
00:06:57 00:07:00 focus on the front-end conversion but
00:06:59 00:07:02 they don't focus on the back end
00:07:00 00:07:04 conversation got it right and so they're
00:07:02 00:07:05 just trying to get that initial purchase
00:07:04 00:07:06 yeah and if you build up equity with the
00:07:05 00:07:08 audience you could get them to buy it
00:07:06 00:07:09 again and again which is really where
00:07:08 00:07:11 email becomes so i'm assuming this is
00:07:09 00:07:13 just all so much easier when you have a
00:07:11 00:07:14 brand or you're working with brands
00:07:13 00:07:16 rather than like let's say it was a
00:07:14 00:07:18 general store in drop shipping yeah we
00:07:16 00:07:20 we work with drop shippers typically
00:07:18 00:07:21 they're one product drop shipping store
00:07:20 00:07:23 so it kind of is a little bit it's a
00:07:21 00:07:25 little bit different yeah 100 percent
00:07:23 00:07:28 we've worked with online um grocery
00:07:25 00:07:30 sellers like people who sell crazy yeah
00:07:28 00:07:31 yeah it's like super random um but you
00:07:30 00:07:33 know even with that it was kind of more
00:07:31 00:07:35 of a general store and you know we're
00:07:33 00:07:36 just doing the reminders and things like
00:07:35 00:07:37 that yeah i think we toked about it a
00:07:36 00:07:39 little bit yesterday till now you
00:07:37 00:07:41 mentioned the grocer like the random
00:07:39 00:07:42 business that you find but how did you
00:07:41 00:07:44 reach out to these people that you're
00:07:42 00:07:45 like hey we're gonna do your email
00:07:44 00:07:47 marketing you know or how did you have
00:07:45 00:07:49 all these get all these people that
00:07:47 00:07:51 you're making so much money for
00:07:49 00:07:53 yeah so it's it's interesting there's a
00:07:51 00:07:55 few different main acquisition methods
00:07:53 00:07:57 one is of course gonna be my instagram
00:07:55 00:07:58 and youtube yeah that helps a ton um so
00:07:57 00:08:00 if anybody's thinking about starting a
00:07:58 00:08:02 personal brand would highly recommend it
00:08:00 00:08:03 um it's great i get to meet people like
00:08:02 00:08:05 you
00:08:03 00:08:07 so personal brands are fantastik uh
00:08:05 00:08:09 additionally we do a lot of outbound uh
00:08:07 00:08:12 um cold outbound so what is that that's
00:08:09 00:08:13 cold email cold calls cold linkedin so
00:08:12 00:08:15 basically if you've never heard of me
00:08:13 00:08:18 i'm gonna slide into your messages and
00:08:15 00:08:20 say hey you know we run email uh here's
00:08:18 00:08:21 a case study and we'd love to have a
00:08:20 00:08:23 conversation gotcha and so that's the
00:08:21 00:08:24 way that we get a lot of our brands and
00:08:23 00:08:26 we get to work with some really cool
00:08:24 00:08:29 people we just brought on a brand about
00:08:26 00:08:30 a month ago that was just on shark tank
00:08:29 00:08:32 and we got them through a cold email
00:08:30 00:08:34 that's amazing that's crazy that you can
00:08:32 00:08:36 actually do that with just cold email
00:08:34 00:08:38 yeah and like
00:08:36 00:08:40 get people you know i feel like it's
00:08:38 00:08:42 just maybe something that also a lot of
00:08:40 00:08:44 brands don't know how to how important
00:08:42 00:08:46 it is you know and you're here here we
00:08:44 00:08:48 can do that for you and it's just
00:08:46 00:08:50 let's just see you're gonna make a lot
00:08:48 00:08:51 more money right yeah yeah i feel like
00:08:50 00:08:52 email marketing is one of those things
00:08:51 00:08:54 people like oh i do it later or like
00:08:52 00:08:55 yeah
00:08:54 00:08:57 yeah you know so it's not something
00:08:55 00:09:00 that's like in the in front of your face
00:08:57 00:09:03 yeah but what we see is our our average
00:09:00 00:09:04 is 36 percent yeah that's crazy of like
00:09:03 00:09:06 if somebody makes a hundred thousand
00:09:04 00:09:07 dollars about 36 percent of that on
00:09:06 00:09:08 average for our clients it's from email
00:09:07 00:09:10 marketing it's coming from me that's
00:09:08 00:09:12 crazy because that's one-third of their
00:09:10 00:09:15 that menu it's insane thinking about it
00:09:12 00:09:16 yeah it actually is um but yeah a lot of
00:09:15 00:09:18 people say that your emails should be
00:09:16 00:09:20 like 20 to 30. okay so even in that
00:09:18 00:09:22 range you're able to make a pretty solid
00:09:20 00:09:24 profit okay that's crazy do you guys
00:09:22 00:09:25 also do sms marketing or any of that so
00:09:24 00:09:27 is that like something just kind of
00:09:25 00:09:29 curious yeah yeah yeah yeah we we pair
00:09:27 00:09:32 them together okay it's very similar as
00:09:29 00:09:33 far as the structures
00:09:32 00:09:35 and timing and we really make them work
00:09:33 00:09:37 together but in my mind email is going
00:09:35 00:09:38 to be number one and we build the sms
00:09:37 00:09:39 strategy around what we're sending for
00:09:38 00:09:40 email
00:09:39 00:09:43 so
00:09:40 00:09:44 one more question um do you feel like do
00:09:43 00:09:46 you see a difference when it comes to
00:09:44 00:09:49 like because i i've heard that like with
00:09:46 00:09:50 sms marketing like the obviously people
00:09:49 00:09:52 get the message they open it like with
00:09:50 00:09:54 emails a lot of people just don't open
00:09:52 00:09:56 their emails right do you see like that
00:09:54 00:09:58 like with sms marketing the conversion
00:09:56 00:10:00 rate is better compared to the email
00:09:58 00:10:02 marketing yeah so from an open rate
00:10:00 00:10:05 standpoint the average that we'll see is
00:10:02 00:10:07 a 98 open with sms with us that's crazy
00:10:05 00:10:09 98 percent of people so like everybody
00:10:07 00:10:11 that you send pretty much
00:10:09 00:10:13 yeah with email with us we try to stay
00:10:11 00:10:15 anywhere from 20 to 30 okay that's
00:10:13 00:10:17 pretty good then yeah it's less than 20
00:10:15 00:10:19 we're probably gonna start ending up in
00:10:17 00:10:20 spam if it's more than 30 we could have
00:10:19 00:10:22 sent to a bigger list so we kind of stay
00:10:20 00:10:24 in that range of between 20 to 30.
00:10:22 00:10:26 gotcha but sms it's pretty much always
00:10:24 00:10:29 everybody opens it there we go um so
00:10:26 00:10:31 with the campaigns so there's kind of
00:10:29 00:10:33 two different types of structures okay
00:10:31 00:10:35 there is automations which is basically
00:10:33 00:10:36 somebody that works through your website
00:10:35 00:10:39 yeah they go through this stuff yeah
00:10:36 00:10:40 like if i send that off
00:10:39 00:10:42 kind of from my own stuff like personal
00:10:40 00:10:43 i'm just kind of proud of it i didn't
00:10:42 00:10:45 know what to do but
00:10:43 00:10:46 go ahead it's useful so with the
00:10:45 00:10:48 automations if somebody's working
00:10:46 00:10:49 through the funnel there will be an
00:10:48 00:10:51 automated sequence that you'll send um
00:10:49 00:10:53 but then there's campaigns where you're
00:10:51 00:10:55 sending it to a list that you might have
00:10:53 00:10:57 yeah and you know try to get them to
00:10:55 00:11:00 purchase got it so with email we really
00:10:57 00:11:02 use email to build up equity first and
00:11:00 00:11:04 then sell offers on the back end so
00:11:02 00:11:07 we're sending a lot of education we're
00:11:04 00:11:08 trying to uh maybe get them to refer a
00:11:07 00:11:10 friend or to build up social so that way
00:11:08 00:11:11 they could see our instagram post or
00:11:10 00:11:13 whatever it is so we're really trying to
00:11:11 00:11:16 build up equity there and then rarely
00:11:13 00:11:18 will do some offers maybe once maybe
00:11:16 00:11:19 twice a month on email so you're
00:11:18 00:11:21 basically that's kind of like how it is
00:11:19 00:11:23 also just in general like you're
00:11:21 00:11:26 providing value and then giving value
00:11:23 00:11:27 giving value giving value and ask for
00:11:26 00:11:29 sale yeah and a lot of people think that
00:11:27 00:11:30 you can just go through and pull out a
00:11:29 00:11:31 lot of equity yeah but you need to build
00:11:30 00:11:33 that equity first yeah yeah yeah yeah
00:11:31 00:11:34 yeah just where that you know you want
00:11:33 00:11:36 people to know you trust you i don't
00:11:34 00:11:38 want to buy eventually buy from you
00:11:36 00:11:40 exactly gotcha yeah so with sms
00:11:38 00:11:42 campaigns we'll typically only send two
00:11:40 00:11:44 a month so it's a lot less yeah and it's
00:11:42 00:11:46 almost always going to be an offer got
00:11:44 00:11:47 it so instead of trying to go through
00:11:46 00:11:49 and do education because everybody's
00:11:47 00:11:51 seeing it we just go straight for offers
00:11:49 00:11:53 gotcha that's so interesting so what
00:11:51 00:11:55 emails is this question i'm wondering uh
00:11:53 00:11:58 you said the open rate is 20 30 percent
00:11:55 00:12:00 right yep um what do you think what do
00:11:58 00:12:01 you think is
00:12:00 00:12:03 like um
00:12:01 00:12:05 why why is it that people like do you
00:12:03 00:12:07 ever like split test like let's say do
00:12:05 00:12:10 you think the subject is the reason why
00:12:07 00:12:10 people click on the ad like not the ad
00:12:14 00:12:17 is that why like the first like because
00:12:16 00:12:19 the first thing they see is the subject
00:12:17 00:12:21 right because that's a lot of times like
00:12:19 00:12:22 i'm doing like i you know i read emails
00:12:21 00:12:23 i'm one of those people that i'm like oh
00:12:22 00:12:24 i want to see how they're doing email
00:12:23 00:12:26 marketing right yeah like wow this
00:12:24 00:12:28 subject is like i'm taking it personal
00:12:26 00:12:30 like is the more you know what i mean
00:12:28 00:12:33 like they say something personal and i'm
00:12:30 00:12:34 like dang i need to click on me this
00:12:33 00:12:36 email you know do you think it's a
00:12:34 00:12:38 subject that gets people to click for
00:12:36 00:12:40 the open rate yeah absolutely so okay
00:12:38 00:12:41 you know it's kind of similar to an ad
00:12:40 00:12:43 in the sense that you know nobody's
00:12:41 00:12:45 going to purchase from the ad they just
00:12:43 00:12:46 get entiked to click onto the website
00:12:45 00:12:48 and then the product listing does a lot
00:12:46 00:12:50 of the selling yeah and so it's the same
00:12:48 00:12:51 thing here where if you are sending an
00:12:50 00:12:53 email the thing that's going to get them
00:12:51 00:12:54 to open is the subject line the thing
00:12:53 00:12:56 that's going to get them to read is
00:12:54 00:12:57 going to be the body text and the thing
00:12:56 00:12:59 that's going to get them to buy is the
00:12:57 00:13:01 offer that makes sense and so we kind of
00:12:59 00:13:03 focus on each of those components
00:13:01 00:13:04 individually so with the subject line
00:13:03 00:13:06 we're not trying to get them to buy yeah
00:13:04 00:13:09 we just wanted to drive curiosity to get
00:13:06 00:13:11 them to open up 100 it's kind of like a
00:13:09 00:13:13 three four seconds of the first ad hey
00:13:11 00:13:14 we want you to exactly yeah i kind of
00:13:13 00:13:17 like that it's scroll stopper that makes
00:13:14 00:13:19 sense yeah uh how many people are right
00:13:17 00:13:20 now in your team like
00:13:19 00:13:22 like what are the tasks like what do you
00:13:20 00:13:24 do exactly i'm just kind of getting more
00:13:22 00:13:25 nerdy i'm just curious like do you write
00:13:24 00:13:28 you don't write i'm guessing you don't
00:13:25 00:13:29 write the emails anymore right no so who
00:13:28 00:13:32 writes the emails we produce about 60
00:13:29 00:13:32 emails a day okay
00:13:33 00:13:37 yeah so at this point it's kind of
00:13:35 00:13:39 surpassed me being able to obviously you
00:13:37 00:13:40 know be able to handle everything and in
00:13:39 00:13:42 big promotions like black friday cyber
00:13:40 00:13:44 monday last year i reviewed all 500
00:13:42 00:13:45 emails myself
00:13:44 00:13:47 so you read all of them i read all of
00:13:45 00:13:48 them i give notes on every single one
00:13:47 00:13:50 yeah because that's the biggest time of
00:13:48 00:13:51 the year and we could tok about the
00:13:50 00:13:54 black friday cyber monday yeah let's do
00:13:51 00:13:55 it um because we'll see a lot of brands
00:13:54 00:13:57 1200 percent their sales in that time
00:13:55 00:13:59 frame if they do it right yeah and so
00:13:57 00:14:00 that's a big sell for them so we want to
00:13:59 00:14:02 make sure that we deliver um but the
00:14:00 00:14:03 team structure we have 13 people
00:14:02 00:14:05 currently um
00:14:03 00:14:07 we have people that are copywriters we
00:14:05 00:14:09 have people that are designers we have
00:14:07 00:14:10 people that uh assemble them so
00:14:09 00:14:13 basically if we were to kind of look at
00:14:10 00:14:14 it from a to z one person's writing it
00:14:13 00:14:16 yeah one person designs it one person
00:14:14 00:14:17 put
00:14:16 00:14:19 it makes it look like really nice yeah
00:14:17 00:14:20 work together and then we have one
00:14:19 00:14:23 person that quality checks it and then
00:14:20 00:14:25 sets it up ah so now you have the person
00:14:23 00:14:26 last year you were quality checking
00:14:25 00:14:28 yourself this year you have a person
00:14:26 00:14:30 that quality checks yeah their full-time
00:14:28 00:14:31 job is look at copy design make sure
00:14:30 00:14:33 that it's perfect we have a checklist to
00:14:31 00:14:35 make sure that it's all matched up and
00:14:33 00:14:38 beautiful oh that's crazy how much it
00:14:35 00:14:39 goes through okay someone's writing it
00:14:38 00:14:41 someone's putting it together and
00:14:39 00:14:42 someone um
00:14:41 00:14:44 doing the designs designs and then
00:14:42 00:14:46 putting it together that's crazy and
00:14:44 00:14:47 then someone's reading in to send it up
00:14:46 00:14:49 yeah you really have to build a nice
00:14:47 00:14:50 system and process and then also find
00:14:49 00:14:52 the right people you know it's difficult
00:14:50 00:14:54 to find uh really high quality
00:14:52 00:14:56 copywriters or good designers yeah you
00:14:54 00:14:58 know and so we have very specific
00:14:56 00:14:59 metrics on how we yeah how did you how
00:14:58 00:15:01 did you find your people just curious
00:14:59 00:15:03 yeah so we we find them through a
00:15:01 00:15:04 variety of different ways the best ways
00:15:03 00:15:06 that i've been able to find them as far
00:15:04 00:15:08 as high quality goes is going to be from
00:15:06 00:15:09 friends of referrals that's true so
00:15:08 00:15:11 friends people that already know what
00:15:09 00:15:13 type of business i'm in and that's
00:15:11 00:15:15 helpful because i have a lot of business
00:15:13 00:15:17 friends yeah so maybe an old designer a
00:15:15 00:15:19 old customer success rep yeah something
00:15:17 00:15:21 like that makes it super easy and then
00:15:19 00:15:22 referrals is typically coming from my
00:15:21 00:15:24 employees where they have friends that
00:15:22 00:15:26 are designers people who are similar
00:15:24 00:15:27 typically yeah so like designers hang
00:15:26 00:15:29 out with designers coders hang out with
00:15:27 00:15:30 coders so they know pretty good people
00:15:29 00:15:32 better percentage as far as how i
00:15:30 00:15:34 qualify them i look at it through two
00:15:32 00:15:36 different lenses one is going to be uh
00:15:34 00:15:37 do they get it do they want it and do
00:15:36 00:15:39 they have the capacity to do it yeah so
00:15:37 00:15:41 that's the framework i use and then on
00:15:39 00:15:43 the back end i look at values this year
00:15:41 00:15:46 was the biggest transition that i made
00:15:43 00:15:48 uh was looking at values as as opposed
00:15:46 00:15:50 to systems got it because previously i
00:15:48 00:15:52 built a lot of process but now i look at
00:15:50 00:15:53 like the values and do they align with
00:15:52 00:15:54 me
00:15:53 00:15:57 i really look at like does somebody own
00:15:54 00:15:59 it do they um you know do they show up
00:15:57 00:16:00 on time are they frugal with their money
00:15:59 00:16:01 because i don't like being you know
00:16:00 00:16:03 spending my money
00:16:01 00:16:04 all you know out there i like being
00:16:03 00:16:06 frugal yeah you know i like to align
00:16:04 00:16:07 those values as much as possible because
00:16:06 00:16:10 it makes the workplace so much better
00:16:07 00:16:12 yeah absolutely that makes perfect sense
00:16:10 00:16:14 so do you have actually any in person
00:16:12 00:16:15 because i know like
00:16:14 00:16:17 we met your i'm guessing business
00:16:15 00:16:21 partner or operations manager operation
00:16:17 00:16:23 managers um so is our is everybody that
00:16:21 00:16:25 you work with a remote or do you have
00:16:23 00:16:26 anyone that you work with that person
00:16:25 00:16:28 it's all remote everything is remote
00:16:26 00:16:30 okay that's pretty cool same i used to
00:16:28 00:16:32 have an office with three people yeah um
00:16:30 00:16:34 but yeah it's just not everything yeah
00:16:32 00:16:35 100 because you can do everything you
00:16:34 00:16:37 know remote why would you want to have
00:16:35 00:16:40 it in person so what's your favorite
00:16:37 00:16:41 thing about this business model right
00:16:40 00:16:42 because there's a bunch of businesses
00:16:41 00:16:44 out there and he said you started with
00:16:42 00:16:46 ecom then you realize you kind of got
00:16:44 00:16:47 into email marketing and then you're
00:16:46 00:16:49 like this is it so what's your favorite
00:16:47 00:16:51 thing about it that's a good question i
00:16:49 00:16:53 would say i think there's there's two
00:16:51 00:16:55 things with e-commerce you're really in
00:16:53 00:16:57 a lot of ways like lone wolf yeah where
00:16:55 00:16:59 you pull a lot of the strings everything
00:16:57 00:17:01 that you do is very leveraged so you run
00:16:59 00:17:03 the ads you don't have to tok to
00:17:01 00:17:05 anybody you can just run the ads 100
00:17:03 00:17:06 yeah with an agency because there's so
00:17:05 00:17:08 many people that i have to work with i'm
00:17:06 00:17:09 having to have a lot of conversations
00:17:08 00:17:11 yeah and i love working with people god
00:17:09 00:17:13 so that's a big thing that i was like
00:17:11 00:17:15 okay this business model fits me a lot
00:17:13 00:17:17 better i'm able to do sales calls i'm
00:17:15 00:17:19 able to tok with the employees things
00:17:17 00:17:21 like that um so that's a big thing for
00:17:19 00:17:22 me the second thing is is that i love
00:17:21 00:17:24 marketing as a whole but the thing that
00:17:22 00:17:26 i really appreciate the most is
00:17:24 00:17:29 copywriting oh and so really getting
00:17:26 00:17:30 nerdy on copywriting that's interesting
00:17:29 00:17:32 yeah i love like the history of
00:17:30 00:17:34 copywriting it's like do you like like
00:17:32 00:17:36 writing in general yeah yeah i love
00:17:34 00:17:39 writing i love looking at the history of
00:17:36 00:17:41 copywriting i've read a ton of copyright
00:17:39 00:17:43 okay um and so now that i'm able to like
00:17:41 00:17:45 do that full time and then also teach
00:17:43 00:17:46 people and then split test these things
00:17:45 00:17:49 for brands that were on shark tank or
00:17:46 00:17:51 brands that are doing 24 million dollars
00:17:49 00:17:53 a year like it's so cool to be able to
00:17:51 00:17:55 see my copywriting yeah play out in that
00:17:53 00:17:56 that's amazing that's amazing that like
00:17:55 00:17:58 you
00:17:56 00:18:00 basically the business you fall into is
00:17:58 00:18:02 something that you already were kind of
00:18:00 00:18:04 passionate about without actually
00:18:02 00:18:06 knowing oh actually enjoy enjoy this i
00:18:04 00:18:07 kind of that's what we were kind of
00:18:06 00:18:08 toking about earlier like doing
00:18:07 00:18:11 something that you actually enjoy a lot
00:18:08 00:18:12 of people force stuff and then they do
00:18:11 00:18:14 stuff and they're like i absolutely hate
00:18:12 00:18:16 this i know i have to do it because you
00:18:14 00:18:18 know i'm making good money but i just
00:18:16 00:18:19 don't like doing it so it's great that
00:18:18 00:18:21 you're doing something that you you know
00:18:19 00:18:23 enjoy doing and yeah you like to be
00:18:21 00:18:25 social and all that stuff yeah um
00:18:23 00:18:27 all right cool what advice do you give
00:18:25 00:18:29 yourself if you were just getting
00:18:27 00:18:32 started with the business if i was just
00:18:29 00:18:33 getting started i would say um value
00:18:32 00:18:37 people over systems okay that's number
00:18:33 00:18:40 one uh number two is that education is
00:18:37 00:18:41 uh experience with leverage okay uh but
00:18:40 00:18:43 make sure that you're still executing
00:18:41 00:18:45 yeah because i for a long time i would
00:18:43 00:18:47 guilt myself if i wasn't working all the
00:18:45 00:18:49 time i'd be like no i can't learn
00:18:47 00:18:50 because i need to be working yeah and
00:18:49 00:18:51 then i went on the other end where i
00:18:50 00:18:53 spent all my time learning and i wasn't
00:18:51 00:18:56 working yeah but you know
00:18:53 00:18:58 the education can be really valuable if
00:18:56 00:19:00 you use it as leverage but you're still
00:18:58 00:19:02 working like 80 90 of the time yeah
00:19:00 00:19:03 you're actually learning something and
00:19:02 00:19:05 implementing it you need to implement
00:19:03 00:19:08 all of it yeah um i would also say to be
00:19:05 00:19:11 frugal yeah i agree i mean yeah yeah i
00:19:08 00:19:12 try yeah it's it's hard but i went
00:19:11 00:19:14 through an experience where i went from
00:19:12 00:19:17 making no money to making a good chunk
00:19:14 00:19:19 of money for for me it was very new and
00:19:17 00:19:22 i bought bought two nice cars i bought a
00:19:19 00:19:24 house and you know whenever the business
00:19:22 00:19:26 event it eventually started slowing down
00:19:24 00:19:27 i had to pull back on all of that so i
00:19:26 00:19:31 went from driving a
00:19:27 00:19:33 m4 and i8 to a 2014 honda civic and what
00:19:31 00:19:34 i realized during that time period is i
00:19:33 00:19:36 had golden handcuffs yeah that it's like
00:19:34 00:19:37 i had really nice stuff but i wasn't
00:19:36 00:19:39 able to do the thing that i actually
00:19:37 00:19:40 loved while i'm doing yeah was building
00:19:39 00:19:43 my business
00:19:40 00:19:44 and so uh by being able to remove those
00:19:43 00:19:46 constraints i'm actually able to do what
00:19:44 00:19:48 i like a lot more so being frugal from
00:19:46 00:19:50 the gate would have been probably a good
00:19:48 00:19:51 move oh 100 i notiked that a lot of
00:19:50 00:19:53 people like let's say
00:19:51 00:19:54 you said like when you started making
00:19:53 00:19:55 money you're like get excited like i'm
00:19:54 00:19:57 gonna spend all my money and a lot of
00:19:55 00:19:58 people do it which is okay you know you
00:19:57 00:19:59 get it out of this system i feel like
00:19:58 00:20:01 you know and then you're like you know
00:19:59 00:20:02 what i want to focus on my business i
00:20:01 00:20:03 don't care about all these stuff you
00:20:02 00:20:06 know
00:20:03 00:20:08 yeah all distraction and one thing
00:20:06 00:20:09 happens that i like at least i saw that
00:20:08 00:20:11 during corvette like people let's say
00:20:09 00:20:12 that they i don't know they were doing
00:20:11 00:20:14 solar or the people sales people doing
00:20:12 00:20:16 really good they would have this
00:20:14 00:20:19 lifestyle that they have to keep up with
00:20:16 00:20:20 right right so they have to work harder
00:20:19 00:20:22 to keep up with the life they don't even
00:20:20 00:20:23 care about you know what i mean right
00:20:22 00:20:26 and they're like i just have to keep up
00:20:23 00:20:27 because you know like everybody knows me
00:20:26 00:20:29 and it's like validation that they're
00:20:27 00:20:30 getting right yeah and it's kind of
00:20:29 00:20:32 crazy because a lot of people do that
00:20:30 00:20:34 and i'm like like a lot of times like
00:20:32 00:20:35 i'm thinking oh big house this this and
00:20:34 00:20:37 i'm like gosh this is so much
00:20:35 00:20:39 responsible i don't want this like this
00:20:37 00:20:40 is nothing that i'm excited about about
00:20:39 00:20:42 now i have to fill it up now i have to
00:20:40 00:20:44 do this it's so much headache why would
00:20:42 00:20:46 i want to do this you know like i don't
00:20:44 00:20:47 know i want to do this like it's just
00:20:46 00:20:49 not worth the stress i want to do the
00:20:47 00:20:50 things that i want to do every day
00:20:49 00:20:52 instead of working on the things i want
00:20:50 00:20:55 to work on and build instead of
00:20:52 00:20:57 stressing about my car maintenance about
00:20:55 00:20:58 the big house oh break down something
00:20:57 00:21:00 happens with this or this happens i know
00:20:58 00:21:02 exactly what you mean and i see this a
00:21:00 00:21:03 lot um and it doesn't allow you to take
00:21:02 00:21:05 the risk that you need to as an
00:21:03 00:21:06 entrepreneur 100 percent if you're
00:21:05 00:21:08 wanting to take risk and move to the
00:21:06 00:21:10 next thing the next business the next
00:21:08 00:21:12 product run more ads you can't because
00:21:10 00:21:15 you have to pay for the bmw or the big
00:21:12 00:21:16 house or whatever it is 100
00:21:15 00:21:18 wish i did that a lot sooner you know
00:21:16 00:21:20 you got to sometimes do it like honestly
00:21:18 00:21:21 it's just so much like experience and
00:21:20 00:21:23 you're like i don't really care about
00:21:21 00:21:25 these things yeah so now i know what i
00:21:23 00:21:26 want and you're still so young that
00:21:25 00:21:28 you're like i know exactly what i want
00:21:26 00:21:30 that's what i want to do you know yeah
00:21:28 00:21:32 and you focus on those things you know
00:21:30 00:21:34 so which is great
00:21:32 00:21:37 uh well uh where people can find you um
00:21:34 00:21:39 yeah i'm mostly uh on twitter instagram
