The State of E-commerce in Portugal: Why We're Falling Behind
Today, we're not going to talk about La Redoute. Instead, I want to fulfill a promise I made to Doariel and Vanessa last year. I wasn't able to be here during the Christmas season, but I'm here now. I've been in the digital space since 2008, when I started a project to transform the bizarre into the digital world. And now, I feel compelled to talk about the state of e-commerce in Portugal.
Heading 1: We Have a Serious Snake Problem
I was the Vice President of CEF for many years, and I'm still involved in the industry. Right now, we have a serious snake problem in Portugal. People aren't looking at e-commerce as a strategy, and that's a big problem. E-commerce is an opportunity for us to reduce the knowledge gap between us and the rest of Europe. We need to start treating it as an obligation and not just a new management paradigm.
Heading 2: Portugal's E-commerce Market
Portugal has around 7.5 million Portuguese connected to the internet, and around 36-37% of them have access to the internet. We're lagging behind other European countries in terms of internet access. However, our technological infrastructure is up-to-date, so that's not the issue. The problem is that people aren't buying online. In fact, we have over a 10% lag in terms of e-commerce penetration compared to other European countries.
Heading 3: Mobile Usage
In terms of mobile usage, Portugal has a 70-75% mobile traffic rate, but only around 50% of people use their phones to make purchases. This is a huge gap compared to other countries, such as Spain, where 70% of purchases are made through mobile. We need to start taking advantage of mobile commerce, as it presents a unique opportunity for us to catch up with the rest of Europe.
Heading 4: Top E-commerce Players
Looking at the top e-commerce players in Europe, we can see that Amazon is the number one player, followed by companies such as Zalando and the Otto Group. In Spain, Amazon is also the number one player, followed by El Corte Inglés and AliExpress. In Portugal, our e-commerce market is still small, with only a 2% share of the fashion market.
In conclusion, we need to start treating e-commerce as an opportunity and not just a new management paradigm. We need to take advantage of mobile commerce, as it presents a unique opportunity for us to catch up with the rest of Europe. We also need to start looking at the top e-commerce players in Europe and learn from them. If we don't start taking e-commerce seriously, we're going to fall further behind.
