Hi, I'm Meg Robicheaux and I was challenged by my friends at Figma to draw 25 icons. In this article, I will go through my process of creating icons and show how they were made.

Process:

1. Setting up artboards:

- Set up artboards to organize ideas.

- Don't move on until you've filled the artboards.

2. Making the hamburger menu:

- Make the hamburger menu as an option.

- Try different variations.

3. Eyeballing the icons:

- Sketching takes time, so eyeball the icons.

- Focus on filling up as many boxes as possible.

4. Finding a trend:

- Once you have enough icons, start to see a trend.

- Massage the other icons to fit with the ones you want to use.

5. Working on details and color:

- Pick out colors for the icon set.

- Spread out the colors to see if they work well together.

- Iterate on the icons to clean them up.

Creating icons is a repetitive process, but it can be therapeutic and relaxing. By setting up artboards, making the hamburger menu, eyeballing the icons, finding a trend, and working on details and color, you can create a cohesive set of icons.

Learning from My Mom and My Career: From Freelancer to Leadership at Shopify

- My mother always says that life gives you lessons, and if you don't learn them, they will come back even harder until you do.

- I learned this lesson in my career, from being a bad freelancer to becoming a good one, and then transitioning to a leadership role at Shopify.

Lessons Learned:

1. Creativity is not a limited resource:

- As a freelancer, I feared that I would run out of good ideas and only produce mediocre work.

- But I learned that creativity comes and goes, and all I need to do is be open to it when it arrives.

- In-house, I realized that creativity can be cultivated through collaboration and exploration, and that there is always room for growth.

2. Working for free can be a good thing:

- As a freelancer, I believed that working for free was an evil thing to do, and I refused to do it.

- But I learned that contributing to good causes, such as Inch by Inch, can be rewarding and fulfilling.

- In-house, I realized that being helpful and accommodating to colleagues can build better relationships and lead to better work.

3. Educating others is important:

- As a freelancer and in-house illustrator, I felt that people didn't understand or respect my work and my team's work.

- But I learned that it was my responsibility to educate others on how to work with us, and to shift the responsibility of understanding onto myself and my team.

- In-house, we opened up our team and our practices to anyone interested in learning and collaborating, and this has led to better relationships and better work.

- My mother was right: life gives you lessons, and it's up to you to learn them.

- My career has taught me to be open to creativity, to be willing to contribute to good causes, and to be proactive in educating others.

- These lessons have helped me become a better freelancer, a better leader, and a better person.
