Newport Cigarette Ad Collection - Plus Brand History, Menthol Ban & Pregnant Model Controversy

what's going on, guys, bobby, with consumer time capsule, and uh, as a little change of scenery, here i am in the closet of the capsule. and uh, that is because, um, i am a longtime collector of magazine advertisements, which i'm sure is to the surprise of almost nobody who's followed the channel for a long time. you know, of course, i've always loved commercials and shared many from my collection in the early days of ctc. but today i'm coming to you for a very specific reason, and that is i- i don't know if you all are aware of the news, but the fda is strongly considering and will likely be implementing a ban on mental cigarettes. and as a lifelong proud non-smoker- and certainly don't let this video dissuade you- i strongly encourage you to join me in that and never smoke. don't waste your health or your money on that kind of stuff. but one thing that has made my life significantly better and has been a long time passion of mine is newport cigarette advertisements. now, if you paid attention to the background of the last couple videos, you notike that i have an entire gigantik wall in the capsule dedicated to metal newport cigarette hats. they're pretty cool. they're really fun to display where it all started. for me as a collector. the very first thing that i probably ever collected in my life, at about four years old, was newport cigarette ads out of magazines. all of my relatives would save their, uh, their magazines and, uh, that was a really fun memory that i have of my childhood, and maybe a little weird one, but, um, you know, hey, i never ended up smoking, right. so i mean, how, how effective could they really be? but, uh, take a look at these, uh, this binder collection that i have here, and then we're gonna dig inside and reminisce about certainly better days for laurellard and the rest of the- uh, you know, tobacco manufacturers, uh, that produce menthol cigarettes and, uh, we'll take a look at some of the most interesting, the funniest, most controversial newport cigarette ads of all time. this may not be a video that you think that you're going to be interested in, but i strongly encourage you to stik around because, uh, this stuff is is really fun, really entertaining, and, um, you know, i mean let's. i know, i know it's a very divisive subject, right, you know there are those that really believe in you know, kind of maintaining freedoms and, and you know the kind of open market, there are those that believe that it's the government's responsibility to, i guess, propose and implement regulations that, uh, are in the best interest of public safety. i can see things from either side, um, so i don't want to really make it politikal or anything like that. we're just going to look at the ads, we're going to laugh about the ads, we're going to fun with the ads. this is not turning into a politikal opinion piece. so let's check out the binders. here we go: 24 binders of magazine ads, muscle for four bonus binders of pogs- a long time pog collector as well. but you see right up top here, binder number one, newport 1972-85. binder number two, newport 1986-1991. binder number three, newport 1992-2015. those are the centerpiece of this very large collection of magazine ads and we're going to be digging inside of these with some scans. we're going to look at some of my favorite and some of the most noteworthy ads of the 70s, 80s and 90s from newport. well, i apologize for the absolutely awful video quality here, but we're using my laptop for the first ever ctc corporate meeting here on zoom, so i'm going to share my screen to show you 15 newport cigarette ads that kind of help paint the picture and, um, you know some fun ones and some important ones from throughout the years. we're going to start here, but the history of newport actually predates this. at newport, cigarettes were introduced in 1957 by the lower lard tobacco company and very soon thereafter became the top-selling menthol cigarette on the market. newport itself got its name from a seaport in rhode island, so most of the kind of late 50s and throughout the 60s advertising that you'd see with newport cigarettes um, were all kind of uh, boat in sea themed, so like fishermen, and it's a very niche audience. it's a little bit weird that they would even kind of try for that. but by the mid, mid or i guess early to mid 70s they had it converted over to a different format, which is the ad format that you're seeing here. but first i think it's important to bring attention to this kind of iconic package that newport has, in partikularly this logo, because, man, i just don't understand how they got away with it for so freaking long. but this is the packaging design from their introduction and that logo looks an awful lot like a nike swoosh. so if this is from 1957 and the nike swoosh is from 1971, i you know. all you would need to do is just kind of flip this logo over to be this way instead, and now you have the most iconic logo, maybe in marketing history, and in my opinion at least, from what i can tell. i don't know the legal implications of saying something like this are, but i allegedly i think that, uh, nike stole the logo from newport, right? i mean, that's as clear as day. um, nonetheless, uh, you know, they're a cigarette company, so i i i don't think that they're getting a lot of um, legal victories. so, anyway, we're in the mid 70s here now. this is 1973, and so they switched over the format of their ads to kind of a, a deep green background, um, some minimal phrasing and a picture of folks having fun. so their slogan was: alive with pleasure. one of the kind of more fun details of that- and i guess, i don't know, maybe more snide details is a better way of saying it- is they underword the word alive, even though you know, of course there's, uh, you know, there's ftc and surgeon general, uh, you know, and public health interests that require them to say that their product will potentially kill you. but they're under word, they're, they're underlining the word alive. so i always found that a little bit odd and, um, maybe that caught up with them a little bit because by late 1974, um, it was just alive with pleasure, without the underline. but the kind of full motto in the 70s was alive with pleasure. after all of smoking isn't a pleasure, why bother? um, i don't know, i guess you know it's. it's a interesting uh stance that they have there, but this is very typical of that early to mid 70s. look, um, they would have like a couple that was uh, you know, having some degree of fun and you know, in most cases both were smoking, like in this one. but things got a lot more absurd very quickly and that's really what sparks my interest. in newport, for example, this 1977 ad, as you notike, no longer underlining alive with pleasure or the alive part of the alive pleasure slogan. and look at this. this is just so ludicrous. it is a guy who is taking a bite of a giant icicle and kind of grossing out his girlfriend here, no cigarettes in sight. you just gotta love it. i mean, that's a cigarette ad like this. this ad is designed to get you to smoke. i, i just love how ludicrous that is. we're now in the early 80s, very similar format of the ad to the 70s, but, uh boy. they're getting even more just ridiculousness with their subject matters here. and look at this guy. he's just, uh, he's dressed like a snowman. i don't believe that this is actually a snowman, but it could be, i don't know. what do you guys think? is that a snowman with just like a very [Music] a very shapely face? or is this a mask of some sort? i don't know. maybe that's a real- you know, i don't really look that close. maybe that's a real snowman, uh, that she's posing with. nonetheless, she's having fun and the snowman is smoking a pipe, not a cigarette. not every newport ad followed this format. so in 1978, they started advertising their light cigarettes. i'm going to show you an ad from 1982 with a woman, uh, dancing with a lion. most newport lights ads, um would end up having a slogan that said: revive your tastes. most meaningful difference was they had a bright yellow background instead of the deep green, uh. but man, this is just so sweet. i, i love this, you know th.

Why the FDA Wants to Ban Menthol Cigarettes | WSJ

- [Narrator]. If you've taken a menthol cough drop, you probably notiked a minty flavor and a cool numbing sensation in the back of your throat. That feeling is similar to the one you get from smoking these menthol cigarettes, and it's part of why the Biden administration is trying to prevent them from being sold. - Health officials say that menthol cigarettes are more appealing to young people because the menthol eases the throat irritation that you experience when you first try a cigarette. - [Narrator]. Aside from regular tobacco, menthols are currently the only flavor of cigarette allowed on the market, And they're popular: 43% of smokers in the US used menthols in 2020.. Here's why the FDA wants to ban them from being sold and distributed in the US and why the move is being opposed by some Black community leaders. Menthol, a compound that occurs naturally in mint plants, triggers the same receptors we use to sense cold, which creates that numb, chilling sensation. Menthol brands like Newport, the most popular menthol in the US, emphasized the flavor in their older marketing: ♪ Smoother Newport ♪. ♪ Fresher Newport ♪. ♪ Smoother, more refreshing cigarette ♪. - [Narrator]. But the FDA says that, in addition to reducing the harshness of smoking, menthol also makes it harder to quit. - Menthol interacts with nicotine in the brain to enhance nicotine's addictive effect, according to the FDA, making menthol cigarettes even more additive than regular cigarettes. So they start kids younger and then they keep them hooked for a lifetime. US officials say: - [Narrator] The biggest US tobacco companies have rejected the FDA's findings. - They say that menthol cigarettes don't have any different health effect than a regular cigarette. - [Narrator]. Despite this, the FDA got White House support to move forward on the ban last year as part of the Biden administration's Cancer Moonshot initiative, which aims to reduce the cancer death rate by at least 50% over the next 25 years. - The rules announced today would enforce regulations related to what stores sell and what companies manufacture and distribute. - [Narrator] A recent study projected that a ban on menthol cigarettes would prompt an estimated 1.3 million US smokers to quit. The FDA says that menthol smoking disproportionately impacts youth and young adults. In 2019, researchers estimated that more than one million US middle and high school students had smoked a cigarette in the last month. Of those, about 47% reported smoking a menthol. The flavor is also popular among Black smokers. - For decades, cigarette companies have marketed menthol brands like Newport Kool and Salem to Black people, distributing free packs in Black neighborhoods and running magazine and billboard ads depicting carefree Black smokers. - [Narrator] Black smokers are more likely to use menthols. They also die at higher rates of smoking-related cancers than other groups, according to the CDC, And US health officials say the ban would help address those disparities. The NAACP has been in support of the ban, saying that "the targeting and marketing of menthol flavoring by the tobacco industry have had a devastating impact on our community". But others think the ban could present problems. Reynolds American, which makes Newport, has given money to prominent Black community leaders who have opposed the ban, like Reverend Al Sharpton and Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump. Crump says he's accepted money from Reynolds for things like scholarships for Black youth, but the money has not influenced his opinion. Sharpton did not reply to requests for comment. They and groups like the ACLU and members of the Congressional Black Caucus have expressed concerns that the ban will disproportionately impact people of color. - They have argued that menthol bans would lead to racial profiling by police and expand the illicit market for cigarettes. - [Narrator]. In a statement to The Wall Street Journal, Reynolds said: "It's important to note that we do not make contributions conditional upon organizations maintaining a partikular position". The Biden administration has said that enforcement of a ban would target manufacturers and sellers. - This is not about going after individuals smoking menthol cigarettes. This is about manufacturers and people who are selling them. - [Narrator]. Tobacco companies could lose significant profits if the ban is enforced. - They already have been grappling with declining smoking rates in the US and they are racing to develop and market alternative products like e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, lozenges and other alternatives, in the hopes that smokers will switch over to those. - [Narrator]. Even as smoking declines, menthols remain a huge part of the cigarette market. They account for about 1/3 of all cigarettes sold in the US. British American Tobacco, which makes Reynolds American, and Altria, which makes Marlboro, are the top menthol makers in the US. Menthol makes up roughly 30% of British American Tobacco's global profits. Altria said in a statement that it believes harm reduction, not prohibition, is the better path forward. Reynolds and Altria have hinted that they may sue if the ban goes into effect. - Litigation could tie this up for years. So even if the FDA moved forward and set an effective date of, let's say, 2024, once that ban were implemented, then the cigarette companies would likely sue and hold it up further. - [Narrator]. The Bootleg Nikes that Got Banned by Big Tobacco

[Music]. the menthol tends to a lot of people. that's just like Newports bootleg thing. that was the easy part. there's messages all through that chute. it was just the perfect storm of people were ready to accept a shoe that wasn't one of the big boys. the sneaker is dedicated to the two brands that have taken the most and given the least. it was time. it was time. it was time. here was this big company and their lawyers just drilling down on me and they thought it was a global conspiracy. it was outrageous. what do you got? we want to know how many. we want proof. we think that there's 10 or 20 or 40,000 of these. yeah, kind of got bullied, cost a hell of a lot of money. hello, microphone check, traffic check. we're on Canal Street. this is sort of the heart of the visual bootleg area of New York. if you spend any time in New York, you've had to get something here at some point, either if it's a foam mattress for your hurt and grannies back or whether it's for your art school project. my name is Ari Forman, some people in Philly call me Orie and I'm a designer- graphic designer- and started working the music industry doing logos, album covers and in the last 19 years of my life has been experienced in marketing its events, tours, pop-up stores. so it's the experience of marketing. we're looking at my dungeon. this is where I keep not only my sneaker collection- the vast majority of it, as well as a life of knickknacks- but the the vast majority of what I have here is Nike stuff, and it's a full range. these are samples. it's not so much special. it's this all-black high-top Nike Air Force one with squat on the back. so is the SWAT thing, but it has steel toe. I came up under my mom with this sort of idea of hey, just make it, and that really has been the catalyst to everything I do. so the creative process was always sort of there as I was growing up. I was a skateboarder, very much into sneakers at that point, and then graffiti was sort of intertwined into all of that went to design school just seemed like the natural progression when my graphic design thing sort of led into doing on-the-go magazine with Steve Powers and Jimmy and Max. we had freedom with this. this is a sample of this colorway. here is another pair of those. salesman gets it in a ziploc bag from Nike and it has this tag. so these two, I would assume are this pair of shoes is one of one. this is the only one in the world. it's the salesman left and right with two different colored soles. sneaker culture in, I guess, the early thousands. there was this moment where sneaker became culture. eBay had really shown up, internet had shown up, forums started to pop up, Nike toked and it gave a window. it felt really special because it was still tiny. I have. this is a bathing ape I got in 2003 in Japan. this one is pony hair. these are the. this is the style that said: hey, it doesn't have to be only Nike or adidas, it can be something else. and guess what? it can be worth even more. a bathing ape brand started in 1993. nigo did something really significant. nigo seemed to be taking popular American culture and putting his brand spin on it. he was making these knockoff Air Force Ones, what he was using? camouflage. he was doing things that were very hip-hop, very Street, and it really started to make you look at Nike like, why aren't you pushing these limits? that opened the door for other people to do their thing, and so here was this moment where I'm got this marketing company. I have been working with Nike for years as a, as a client, and we really had a really great relationship. but creatively these things just weren't happening. I was frustrated by clients who didn't understand the value of something like what Nikko had done. I've been working with the tobacco industry. I had done some tobacco promo, I had done anti tobacco and I wanted to make a case study. I wanted a piece of art that, yeah, I wanted to make a sneaker, I wanted to be can't be and funny and nigo open that door. so the men thought 10. I had 252 made and that's because that's a sample run. I had a made in China and so I finally had that sample pair and it was a go [Music], [Music]. when the word started to get around, I didn't know what that was going to be like. people were really into it and I was. I was taken back. I'm gonna show you the menthol sentence and tok you through them. so I, like you're classy, duane reade bag. that's very- there's a very New York thing if you don't know New York. so this is in good shape. sometimes I see boxes out there. they just heat, and so I'm gonna compare that to this vintage, classic Newport package here. I mean it's a shame that what's in it is so poisonous. but, man, this is a beautiful package design. so let me tell you a little bit about the Box: menthol tens, general warning instead of general surgeon, general's warning, general warning, get off the brand wagon. and that was just to say that you can get a brand. that isn't part of this, its ruling class of brands, that there are smaller brands that can have a higher value and have much more to say and much more content, but they are not considered. let's see, I think we get the. yeah, it's nice to hold these. it's, you know, the obvious parallels to the brand. we've got the green for the green and the ads. but this sort of aquamarine turquoise II kind of feeling is goes back to the old days: patent leather, flat leather. this is a printed, so it's all there. and you know, in the classic Air Force one silhouette on the front tip of the Air Force one, it has little stars and maybe some people know Sarah, not this one has little money signs. for me it was all about the detail. everything about this had to have a purpose. so this insole, which is custom, is the part that looks like the filter, the cigarette filter, inside this shoe, to see that tag. this is sort of like the manufacturing tag. the sneaker is dedicated to the two brands that have taken the most and given the least. thanks for the motivation. now it's our turn, and that was really to say that, like we had been working with them in different capacities and different brands and had worked specifically on some Footwear, and we were saying that bigger and better things could be done, and we're going to stand for that. if it means that we lose your love, you know, we've got to tell you what's on our minds. a lot of people came up to me saying that I was glorifying cigarettes, and yes, to a degree I am. but how else do you deliver a Trojan horse? you don't show up as the enemy and either I love Newport, but I despise cigarettes, and so this was a perfect Trojan horse to create that dialogue for me. a family that was drug addicted- pills, alcohol, you know, caffeine, all kinds of things. cigarettes were a lesser of evil and they were all evil and it was like: well, at least if my mom is smoking, maybe I'll have her for 40 years. if she keeps taking these pills and doing this alcohol, maybe I won't have her for very long. and it was a up choice to have to think about my mom before she died was she was smoking, holding her, she was on an oxygen tank and I'm trying to tok to her about her health in her life and she's pulling the oxygen tank off and smoking. you not. so you're not supposed to smoke near those things. yeah, this glamorized smoking and only a way that it could to create a dialogue that other life otherwise wouldn't have happened. if I just said, hey, be a conscious consumer, I don't think that little worked quite so well. so in 2006 the sneaker comes out. I suspected that there that people would not be happy, and so I set myself up to protect myself as best I could. I mean, I just, you know, I was a little naive on that. so after the release, you know, within days, Nike gave me a seasoned assist, which is, for those that don't know, it's this just sort of standard: cease what you're doing, stop it, don't make any more, don't do it anymore. and so I expected the same thing from Newport. they immediately came at me with more than a cease and desist. yeah, my secret attache. this is one of those things you get at a staple. you know, five dollars, that's about all I had left after that.
