Beyond Your Online Store with Shopify (Part 1)

The article is about the Western Entrepreneurship Speaker Series and Shopify's e-commerce series. The third session of the series is led by Amy McKay, a sales executive at Shopify. The article covers topics such as what to sell, logistics and shipping strategies, and content creation for a successful e-commerce business.

What to Sell:

There are different types of businesses that can be started on Shopify, such as direct-to-consumer, multi-channel retailing, services, and digital products. Examples of successful merchants on the platform include TB12, Bandier, and Gymshark. It is important to focus on paying customers to drive the business, and reinventing existing ideas to make them more accessible.

Logistics and Shipping Strategies:

It is essential to integrate third-party shipping fees into the Shopify site to avoid paying double the money to ship products to customers. Drop shipping, warehousing, and direct fulfillment from retail are popular ways of housing products and fulfilling orders. Packaging and shipping strategies should be eco-friendly and aligned with the brand.

Content Creation:

Content creation is a challenging aspect of running an e-commerce business, especially when it comes to visually and writing content. It is important to create a brand story that resonates with the target audience and to have a consistent voice across all platforms. Engaging with customers through social media and email marketing can also drive sales.

Having a successful e-commerce business requires a solid understanding of what to sell, logistics and shipping strategies, and content creation. Shopify provides different options for housing and fulfilling orders, and integrating with third-party partners like Canada Post and UPS can streamline the shipping process. Creating engaging content and focusing on paying customers can help drive sales and loyalty.
