The idea of Editions came from Shopify's CEO, Tobi Lutke, who wanted to help tell the company's product story better.
The project was done unusually, as it broke many traditional rules for product launches. It was an incremental work stream on top of everything that everyone had going, and they needed to borrow people from all across Shopify.
The project started with no content or concept, but they had to dive in anyway. They had free reign and permission, which was liberating, and it gave them a lot of freedom to make it what they felt it needed to be.
The creative process started by looking at references of similar formats from utilitarian to entertaining. They leaned into the strength of Hydrogen and made the site into a storefront, showcasing their products as products and giving them a uniform visual manifestation.
They also played with the digital and physical and came up with the idea of product tiles that are squishy, have a texture, and are animated. These illustrations were done in-house and anchored the site.
The team was made up of people from different corners of Shopify, and they collaborated closely to make this project happen.
