Secure Checkout: Shopify Age Verification

Published on: May 9 2023 by pipiads

In this tutorial, we will learn how to add an age verification feature to your online store. This is especially important for stores that sell products with age restrictions like alcohol, tobacco, or explicit material. We will avoid using free apps as they often track your data and compromise your store's security. Instead, we will use a simple and efficient method to add this feature to your store.

Here are the steps to add an age verification feature to your store:

1. Add the following assets: micromodal.min.js, hcheck.css, hcheck.js, and hcheck.liquid

2. Create a new CSS file called agecheck.css and paste the code from hcheck.css

3. Create a new JS file called hcheck.js and paste the code from hcheck.js

4. Create a new liquid file called hcheck.liquid and paste the code from hcheck.liquid

5. Open the theme.liquid file and find the section called footer. Paste the code from hcheck.liquid below this section.

6. Save all changes and refresh your store to see the age verification feature in action.

Using this method, you can add an age verification feature to your store without relying on apps that compromise your store's security. This feature is especially important for stores that sell products with age restrictions to ensure that only eligible customers can access them.

Add age verification to your Shopify site in under 7 minutes

Welcome to this tutorial on how to install the One Account Age Verification app into your Shopify store for the sale of age-restricted products. In this video, I'm going to walk you through the installation step by step, and you'll see this is a real simple app to integrate and begin checking the age of your customers. Here's how to install the app:

1. Register for a business account with One Account by going to our website, www.oneaccount.net/business, and clicking Get Started. Insert your company details into the form and create a username and password so you can access the developer portal.

2. Once you've logged into the business area, you need to create a project that defines the type and strength of checks that will be conducted on your behalf. If you're unsure of which age verification level to select, you can contact one of our experts on the email [email protected] to discuss what is the most appropriate level for your business.

3. Go to your Shopify admin panel, click on Apps and search for the One Account Age Verification app. Click Add App.

4. Add the client ID and client secret. Go back to the project within the One Account business portal and paste the client ID and client secret into the relevant fields.

5. Generate the script, copy it, and paste it into the Additional Scripts section in your Shopify settings checkout.

6. Visit your One Account demo online shop and create a purchase as an example. Once the order is completed, the One Account verification is triggered. If successfully verified, the purchase will be age verified, and the products can be shipped.

7. Check your Shopify orders to see if an AV tag was added. Different tags indicate different scenarios such as AV not required, non-UK user, AV close, AV pending, and AV fail.

In conclusion, installing the One Account Age Verification app into your Shopify store is a simple and effective way to ensure that you are selling age-restricted products to only those who are legally allowed to purchase them. Age Verification Functionality for eCommerce Sites - Shopify, Volusion, Magento, WooCommerce, Miva

E-commerce age verification is becoming increasingly important for businesses selling products that require compliance, such as vape products, electronic cigarettes, and firearms. There are two levels of age verification – a pop-up asking if the user is of legal age or requiring users to enter an ID to verify their age when making a purchase. Optimum7 can integrate age verification functionality into various platforms, including Shopify, Big Commerce, and 3D Card. In addition, Optimum7 can also help with compliance metrics.

Age Verification Functionality:

1. Two-Fold Functionality: Optimum7's age verification functionality is twofold. First, users visiting the site will have to answer yes or no on a popup asking if they’re of legal age. Second, users must go through another step before completing a purchase on the store.

2. Veratad’s AgeMatch Verification Services: Optimum7 uses Veratad's AgeMatch Verification Services to verify the information that the user inputs in their shipping and billing information. This ensures that the user checking out on the site is of legal age to purchase the products being sold.

3. Manual Verification: If for whatever reason a user's age cannot be verified, their order will be put on hold pending manual verification.

Platforms:

Optimum7 can implement age verification on various platforms, including Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce, and more.

Age verification functionality is crucial for e-commerce businesses selling products that require compliance. Optimum7 can help integrate age verification functionality into various platforms and provide assistance with compliance metrics. Extending Checkout with Shopify Apps | Shopify Unite 2021

Welcome to the Unite developer session on Checkout Extensions. My name is John Arthorne, and I'm an engineering manager working on Checkout Extensibility at Shopify. Earlier today, on the Unite main stage, you heard about some new capabilities coming to Shopify Checkout that allowed developers to customize and extend the checkout experience using apps for the first time. I'm going to spend about 15 minutes giving you a deeper look at these new features, and then we'll have a panel of experts ready to answer your questions during a Q&A on Discord.

Why we're building Checkout Extensions:

I want to talk you through some of the problems we're trying to solve with Checkout Extensions and how the technologies we built aim to solve these problems. The first problem merchants face using Checkout Liquid comes from the tight coupling to the implementation of checkout. Liquid templates are a powerful tool, and they let you do all kinds of customizations, but this is a sharp tool that comes with significant problems and risks. The second major problem is the workflow for developing and integrating changes. This especially comes up when a merchant's trying to integrate code from a third-party software vendor. Security is another thing we worry about a lot. As a merchant, it's great to be able to insert your own arbitrary JavaScript into your shop, but this creates a big security risk, especially during checkout. There's sensitive personal information, addresses, and even credit card information being entered on these pages. Malicious JavaScript code can access all of this. We really need to move away from third-party JavaScript running on the checkout page to keep it secure.

How they work:

Our new customizable checkout has three central concepts: extensions, UI components, and a branding API. Extensions allow an app developer to contribute functionality to a particular part of the checkout page. UI components provide a way to add rich visual elements to checkout, and a branding API allows merchants to customize the appearance of the checkout page along with all of its extensions. One of the key characteristics of the new approach to checkout extensions is that it's much more focused on the browser client-side. Currently, much of the functionality driving checkout happens on the server, and the major services you interact with as a developer are on the server-side. Checkout extensions, on the other hand, are focused on the client-side. As an app developer, you're extending a client-side application directly, rather than integrating with the back-end.

In conclusion, checkout extensions are a powerful new tool for app developers that allow for more customization and flexibility in the checkout process. They solve some of the problems associated with using Checkout Liquid and provide a more secure and stable platform for merchants. With extensions, UI components, and a branding API, app developers have the power to create truly unique and immersive checkout experiences that can help merchants drive sales and improve customer satisfaction. We look forward to seeing what you can create with these new tools and invite you to join us on Discord for further discussion.
