Shopify Tutorial: How to Build a Directory with Shopify

hey guys. so today we're gonna build a directory on a Shopify website and so, first off, what's the directory? why would you want one? and when you watch this video, don't forget to subscribe to our channel and like the video, appreciate it. so why would? what is a directory? why would you want one? so this is at germinate com website. when we build out Shopify sites, so one of the things that our customers are looking for is they're looking for, you know, suppliers to southern products, whether it's from dropship, basically a wholesale basis, or they're looking for resources. you know how do they do their email marketing, things like that, so we put links to companies out there. so let's take a quick look at that. so, for example, and resources, we would be promoting Constant Contact, Shopify, etc. so let's go in there and you can see, you google it. it's built out nice and clean. it's got a logo, some descriptive content, a link to their website and the potential to get reviews put in here, and I've also put some information about Germany on the bottom here. why? because obviously we we want to come up from search engines, so we want to come up and things that people search a lot for. Constant Contact is something that people are going to be searching a lot for email marketing, so it's good content SEO for search engine traffic. also, if you build out these directories right- and I'm a constant contact- they're not going to give us a link back. but in the example that we're going to do today, I would be contacting the people in my directory and saying, hey, how about giving us something back to our website? because we've given you one, so that's good for SEO as well, so long as those links are of good quality. you don't want terror. you don't want bad web sites linking to you. you want good web sites linking to you. Google analyzes that data, so we're gonna do this on our just greenbeans sample website and just green bean sales. for green beans that have to be roasted, a typical customer would be a coffee shop, so great example for this would be to do a coffee shop listing, a customer listing. basically, where can you taste that coffee beans? well, you can go to these cafes. I don't so well, that's what we're gonna do today. in your case, you're gonna have to think about what information would be both useful to my customers that would help them. is it resources of some sort? is it links to vendors that I sell to you know. what's going to be useful for them is that if I put that information on my website, is it detrimental to me? because you don't want to do that. you don't want to be sending traffic to your competitors, basically right. and so you've got to find something that's first useful to your people who are visiting your website and hopefully not detrimental to you, provides a good content for your website and, and even better, if you can go to those people and say, hey, give me a link back, because I've just written this thing about you and I'm putting it on my website. okay, so let's do this. so we're gonna go into our just green beans. first thing that we need to understand- let's go here- is that what we're using here is the product object. so we've created- I've got five or six different businesses that I've put out here. they're actually businesses from my data, from my germinate website. any imported it, so they're not coffee shops, but we're gonna imagine that their coffee shops yesterday, I bet. so let's have a quick look at one of these. so it's got a product title, it's got a description, it's got an image. okay, at the moment it's on the product template. we're going to change that. it doesn't matter about pricing, because we're not going to sell this product. it doesn't matter about inventory, cuz we're not gonna be selling this product. you'll notike that I've got a tag in each of these and it says URL. and then it's the URL of this partikular company because we're gonna put a link on our website to them. why the URL? that'll make sense in a minute. stik with me, okay. so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to create a alternative product template. okay, so let's take our products dot liquid, which we would have found under our regular template. see our product liquid. there we go product liquid and we did this in a previous example for product uh- gifts. it's the same basic concept. so if you haven't take a look at one of those earlier videos where we did this. so let's just copy that and let's go up to add new template. it's a product template and we're gonna call it cafes- create template. that template we want to just paste in. what we just copied is pretty much the same as what was already there. any way, change the instructions to include the section called product template, cafes, and you can change the instructions here, which is just a comment so that people know where to look. okay, safe, let's go down and find product in the sections. you want the product template, you notikes and I've already opened it here, so let's just copy it all. and then let's create a new section and we want to call this product templates, cafes- create section and we want to paste in all that stuff that we just copied save. okay, so now we've created an alternative set of templates or product that cafe is template and we've told it to include all of this product template cafes code. okay, so let's just go back and have a look at our products here. let's just go back and take a quick look at this. it's only six dozen. I'm gonna have to go through the six of these and just change this to cafes continue. and what I'm basically doing. it doing now is I'm saying: don't look at the don't load the product. temporary load the new one that I just did. product dot cafes. okay, whoops, come back as - I think I've got six of these. this is number three: product cafes: okay, one, two, three, four, four at cafes save two more. bear with me a minute. once we've done this, we'll we'll take a quick look at it and it shouldn't make any difference at this point because we've just done straightforward copies of the product template. so the product cafe is at the moment. it should be exactly the same as the product product template itself. okay, but we're going to change that in a minute. we're going to go in and edit it. okay, save, great. so let's just have a quick look at this one now and load it up and it should look exactly the same as it would if it was a product. okay, so it's got the description, it's got the price and we don't have a price, though it's marked as free. add the carts. remember, we built this into the template and it would have producer information here if we'd set the vendor up. but because we didn't set the vendor up to match a collection title, that's not going to be there and that again is in a previous video that we did. okay, so let's go in now and start editing this product template cafe. so let's start by cleaning it up. right, we do not want any of that shipping table data. so let's find that. there you go. we don't want any of this shipping table data. that's not necessary for this because we're not selling the product. okay, we don't want any of this, meet the producer stuff, okay, so let's get rid of that. and then we don't want the product form, we don't want to know, we don't want to be able to buy it, right, so I can get rid of this completely, save. we also don't want the price going up the top. so let's go and take a quick look at that. we could probably set that in the through the theme setup. if I can find it here quick enough, we'll set it that way. if I can't find it quickly enough, then we'll just do it in the would estate price off. but several look, it's got to be here somewhere right, if product available- this is banners- set the vendor, the SKU code, product title- we know it's below the product title, right? so you got some tanks which we obviously don't have turned on. we got some pricing stuff here going on. I think I can probably just remove all of this because we don't want any of that pricing information. let's just clean it up and take that all away. okay, now let's just refresh that and see what we've got. lik.

07 - Understanding Shopify Store 2.0 Theme Architecture

hey, welcome to another video. in the previous videos we toked about cli, team kit and all the shopify development tools. so before i tok about how we can configure television css with shopify cli, let's tok about theme architecture. i would put it simple: before you make, before you build any shopify theme, you have to understand the structure of shopify theme, what are the things that you need to know and how it works. so in this video i will tok about the structure of the theme. there are some limitation and how things are related to each other. so if you are a beginner to shop for theme development, i highly recommend you to watch this video multiple times, because it is difficult to understand it at once, even if i explain it step by step. and the more you watch, like the more video you watch in this series and the easier it will get, because i cannot explain everything in a short video, but i will do my best. so it is very important to watch this video and understand the basic structure of shopify team. so let's dive deep. if you come to the documentation, it all start from the architecture. now it is really clear if you go to overview the explaining, but it is much better if we take a look at the theme itself. so if i explore, here is the thing you have to know: shopify use along a templating language called liquid and the liquid basically have the dynamic data. so the data is coming from shopify in terms of like variables, that is already in liquid and the. your job is to put those variable or those data in your html and then design it your css. so in this video, as you know, we are going to use liquid as a templating engine with shopify offer and html and css for the structure and design, also javascript for interactivity of your our website. so these are the languages that we use. if i scroll down themes in shopify has a basic structure. i will scroll down to the bottom. this is the structure of the theme and it has some folders that you cannot break. the rule. for example, you have assets folder. you cannot have a subfolder inside it, even if you have. shopify will either ignore it or give you some error. yesterday when i was working, i created a folder inside this asset, so the shopify should ignore it. in teamkit it used to ignore, but using cli it threw an error and it took some time for me to fix it. so never put any folder inside the assets, since we are using shopify cli, that is going to cause an error. config is where you put all the configurations. and let me see about the assets. also, inside the asset you can put all your css javascript images, if you have any. all of them will be in this directory, no subfolder at all. inside the layout you will put the master layout. your whole website will have different layouts either and the layouts will be inherited by other pages. for example, you have checkout, which has, which has like a unique layout. it is not the same as the other part of your website, so that will be inside the layout. you have a layout for none, which will nothing will display. you have a team layout, which is the default one. you can have your own layout also, which will tok in the future. inside the locals you will put all the translation files, so we'll focus on that also. sections: sections are the most important of shopify team and this is where i love it. sections are reusable blocks of shopify where you can create page and use those section in the pages. so let me show you this one in a practikal example. if you come to the shopify store that you have here. click in the customize. now it will launch the customizer. the customizer is a great tool for customizing your theme, adding like bringing new changes. for example, this is one section called image banner and you can arrange it like, rearrange it, you can bring it up or down. you can add more section if you scroll to the bottom. these are all the sections that shopify offer in the down team. so all these sections will be inside the sections folder and then we have a snippets, a snippets or a basic block, block of code that you can reuse in different sections. imagine if you have a block of code that you use. you repeat it a lot. so instead of repeating, you will put it inside a snippet and then you will render it inside the section. so you will put right at once and we are going to focus more like we will uh, have more example in the video in this video series, but for now the snippets is like components. if you have ever created any javascript applications, then you have template only. inside the template you can have subfolder called customer. inside the customer you have account and you have some other templates for order and some other things that you will focus now. so, inside the template and, as i said, you cannot have your own folder. if you have it, shopify either will ignore it or, through an error in the root directory, you can have a folder, but shopify will never put that in the shopify directory. so let's check out the code in in the theme that we have in here. so inside the assets we have all the css and javascript, probably an image too, but we don't have it in here. we have a lot of them and we are going to remove a lot of them. so we have config. this one is for vs code only, vs code specific- some extensions and we have inside the config we have all the configuration. we have something called sitting schema. settings are general sitting in your store and you normally write a json data in here. this json data will be rendered into a very nice sitting in the admin, for example, you have this uh text that you have here. this is one block. what shopify does? shopify put all of this inside the translation. whatever is start with t, then two dots. it is going to be inside the translation. where do you find the translation? inside the locals. so all, all of these are the translation. so if you want to search for this sitting schema. just give it a search and you can find. these are all the translation. you do not searches inside this one, but inside the schema which is inside the locals file. now let's check out this default. the default one is in english, this is the global and then we have header. these are all objects. if it is confusing to you, don't worry, we are not going to touch all of this, but i showed you just an example like how it is going to work. it goes inside the color and it take the name. instead of all of this, you can directly say: like colors, it is totally fine. the only reason people put translation is in the future. if they translate their team to another language, it should be easy for them. but i'm sure shopify will one day realize that this is not the best way to put name in here. so this was introduced, i think, a few months ago. previously people just directly put their name because nobody would translate this part of the theme. even if they did, they would directly come and do it in the theme setting. so i will close this for now. let's come back. now you understand this schema. now let's see where is this render in the shopify team. if i come to my team in here, close everything. you see this theme settings. so this theme setting is basically where all the settings are. as i said, we have the color in here and this is the typography. inside the typography we have all these fonts and then we have layouts button and everything is here. you see it, there's a lot of like settings, but we will focus more on how we can add our own sitting in the future. all you need to know for now is that these are the json that will be rendered as a sitting and search shopify. i'll close this one- and inside the layout, currently we have a theme and password. password is the front password, which people will not be able to access our website unless they have the front password, and this is the theme which other template will inherit from this. now we will tok more about how the templating is going to work. this is the master template, but let's check out the locals. yeah, this is all the translations. inside this. we have sections. we we can open one of this, for example, if we check the image banner. this is the image banner.

How To Add brands slider To Your Shopify Store - Easy Step-By-Step Tutorial

welcome back graduates. so today we'll be teaching you how to add this section right here. it's a brand slider. now a lot of, a lot of ecom stores and just websites in general have this area to feature brands that they've worked with. so you tiknically add like a little title above it saying: you know, brands we've worked with are our partners or whoever it may be. it's for you to feature a brand logo, not a massive image. there's a simple brand logo on who you worked with and it's really good to have because, you know, allows people to go and know like: oh cool, you worked with forbes. oh wow, you worked, worked with um, i don't know some, some company out there. i'm just letting people know and, you know, validating more social proof. the more social proof you have on your website, the better. it builds that trust, that foundation that you need. you know, without that foundation of trust, then you're not going to get any sales. no one's going to want to buy your product. so anyways, let's get right to it. i'm going to show you how to add this in. it's very easy, very, very easy, like our other tutorials. i believe last time we taught you how to add this review section to dawn, which is very, very powerful, got a little, got a really good response on that. um, if you guys want to check that video out, just click anywhere on the screen. you'll see something come up saying, hey, check this video out. but all right. but enough wasting time, let's get right to it, shall we? three, two, one here we go. time is money. um, so when you, uh, when you download this file, you will these videos will be different. um, this is just here for now, but you'll get this little file here. you'll get, uh, the rtf file, which is the actual code, and then this html file which you just open it up. it'll open up in your browser and it'll look just like this, showing you step by step how to add this feature. so the first step, we're going to be adding in a in your themes, file directory sections, eg brands, but we got to get to the theme. so, as always, let's click on online store. you'll be in your admin dashboard. click on online store, go to the theme that you want to edit and we're going to edit dawn, no brands, because, well, it doesn't have the brand section. let's preview that first, and then we're going to click on edit code, just like that, our previewing. preview: no cool sections here, all right, example example: awesome, very plain, simple, uh, theme. so the step that we need: we're going to go and create eg brands- dot liquid, so let's just copy that right there. we're going to click on sections because it says right here, sections forward, slash eg brands, and this is your sections folder. we're going to go here, paste that bad boy in there, create section. and now we're going to go back to our finder, our file finder. we're going to open up this rtf file and we're just going to copy all of this and copy: go here, copy that as well, get rid of it, paste and we're just going to hit save. that easy, guys, it's that easy. now we can close out of that because that's i'm pretty sure that's the last step. yeah, that's it. so go into theme better and start adding the section. so let's do that. let's do that right now. i'm going to just click. there's a little customize button right here, click customize. all right, i'm going to go down here. and we already have it added in. i already had it pre-filled, but there's blocks. you just add the image and you can add a link, and there's also settings here if you want to change the background, we can make it red- you know, because we're cool like that- and change the uh, the list name to brands list, um, and it's and it's in it's accessibility. so i'm going to be making a video on um accessibility soon. it's very, very important. um, if you guys are interested in that video, please comment below if you're interested. um, also, i notiked that most of you guys aren't subscribed. you're actually people who are just searching for these videos. so if you came across this video and you like it and you love it and you want to see more of this, um, click the subscribe button, click the like button. it helps us, it. it motivates us to keep making more content like this to teach you guys how to add features to your store at an affordable rate. so, anyways, back to teaching you how this works. so we've got animation duration: 10 seconds. we have spacing, so for padding top and bottom and margin top and bottom, the gap between each image and, yeah, it's uh pretty simple. there's really not many uh settings here. it's very, very simple and um, hopefully this helps, guys. thank you so much for watching. until next time, smash the like button and subscribe.

welcome back graduates. so today i'm going to be showing you how to add custom html sections to your shopify theme. now we're using dawn theme. it's a great free theme, but it's missing a lot of core features that you know. i think you guys need you know. in our previous videos, we taught you how to add parallax image overlays, taught you how to add an faq section. we even taught you how to add this beautiful instagram section. so now we're going to be teaching you- i say we, i'm going to be teaching you- how to do custom html sections. as you can see, we got an embedded map here, which is pretty cool. now this, this custom html section, allows you to do a lot of unique things with your store. you can embed things, you can write your own html. so, anyways, let's get right to it and show you how to do this and, as always, show you step by step by step. now what we got here is our sections, so our custom html folder, and you just have one file. now let's go right into our theme. as always, we start off with that home click on the online store. you'll end up in themes and let's go and edit the theme that we want to edit. so you're going to go and i'm going to open up the customizer in another tab, as well as edit code. now on here, i will show you that there is no custom html section. we've got our parallax feature that we that i showed you how to do and what else do we got in here. we've got the instagram faq, but there's no custom html. all right, let's go and solve that. it's kind of cool, though. they got custom liquid. that's really cool. all right. now let's go back to the code editor. now we're going to go into the sections folder. i'm going to click on add new section and we'll do. we'll call this: eg hyphen- custom hyphen- html. hit enter. now you're going to want to open up a text editor, like i always suggest. use it. use vs code or sublime, but for this case, notepad is fine for this tutorial. i only advise people to use code editors when you know you're actually trying to do development work. all right. so drag it over, copy it all, go into here, get rid of all that and paste it, hit save. it's really that easy. it really is. we make it painless for you, because that's what we strive to do. so now what we're going to do is we're going to refresh, reload and wait for shopify to take its time. now what we want to do is go into add section and we want to click on custom html. so, as you can see, here, we've got an html section. we also have a, an option where you can add, you know, text. you can align it, you can adjust the spacing, the margins, the padding, the background color, text color, max width. you can wrap it in a container if you want. but i'm going to show you a really cool site called powerio and what it allows you to do. it allows you to embed all these unique things. there's all kinds of different apps that they got. they have social feeds. you got media galleries, count on timers, form builders, more form bill builders- i don't know what these things are. it seems like they're saying the same thing over and over. but for this case, we're just going to go into the countdown timer. maybe you're running a sale and you're counting down the days until the sale ends or drops or whatever got it. so now we'll publish and we'll embed with code. we're going to copy this code. we're just going to go into the customizer. we're going to paste the html code right there, hit save and look at that. how cool is that? now, because i'm logged in, it shows that. uh, it shows, it shows this little button. but isn't that pretty cool? i think it's pretty unique. let's go and add another uh html block or section, rather, what else do they got in here? maybe we can go to like mapsgoogle, mapsgooglecom, and we'll- uh, we'll, type in: i'll just go to a previous line: embed share map copy html. let's go and add a map to our store. we're fancy like that- hit save and now you'll notike that some things right here won't always look great. so if you're trying to embed a map, we'll change this to a hundred percent and voila, we got ourselves a fancy, fancy map. i think that's pretty unique. so now you just learned how to add a custom html section to your theme and then again, this works on any theme. we're just using dawn. so if you really enjoyed this tutorial, make sure you smack that subscribe button. i really need to get better at saying subscribe button and as well as liking the video, because it helps us, it motivates us, it allows us to create more content, reach more people and, if you're feeling fancy, go and join our facebook group. it's a community of like-minded individuals who help each other out, teach you how to do different things, and there's some content in there that you won't necessarily be able to get on our youtube channel. and anyways, guys, thank you so much for watching and check the links in the description below- and we've got a lot, of, a lot of upcoming things that we're working on, like apps, custom themes, tools, you know, to help you find products. we're doing all kinds of cool things that you know behind the scenes that we want to release this year. it's a lot. it's a lot. let me tell you that, okay, and um, definitely look out. you're going to want to subscribe to this channel because you will see, you want to get notified, you want to know about our upcoming products and yeah, anyways, i'm rambling, so subscribe, tok to you later. bye.
