How to Edit robots.txt on Shopify Stores?
hey, welcome to another video. in this video i am going to show you how you can edit robotstxt file in a shopify store. and robottxt file is not something you often change, but there are certain times where you want to add a file to it or you want to exclude something from search engines that you don't want to crawl. so if you don't know what is the robusttxt, you might want to learn it because in the future you might need it. so, robot, that txt, is a file. every website have it. basically tell the search engine which page to crawl and which page not to crawl. um, the thing is like in shopify. it was not possible in the last few years and a lot of people was asking about this one and it was not possible. so i found out like they have added this new feature. now you can edit the robotstxt, and that's like an amazing feature. so i thought maybe i can share the videos. so let's see how you can edit this one. now, before we do it, i'm going to show you how you can access the robotstxt in this example team, that which i have. it is completely a custom theme. i'm going to go to the url and slash and then from here you can see robotstxt and press enter. this is the content of the robotstxt. for example, you can tell the user agent which store means everything and, like google, yahoo, whatever search engine or any any crawler who want to crawl your website, either they are from coming from hdf or they are coming from- i don't know- some other crawlers. you can disable the crawler from there. for example, they cannot check the download directory here. anything which is in the download directory. they cannot crawl that, because if it is in the download directory, like they can crawl and people can google it and they can find it, as well as the admin card order checkout. all of these are disabled. so this is how you can disable it. for example, the search is also disabled because in the search page it is always custom. people search for the custom word. it is not a page where you have to see it on a google search engine. so how you are going to modify this one? according to the documentation here, which is, i think, a new one, you just have to create a robotstxtliquid file in your template directory. so here i will bring up my team here and i make sure it is visible to everyone and i'm going to run the theme watch, allow, live, and now it is going to watch for any changes and my live directory and i'll go here. this is the file that we have to create. i'm going to copy the name from here and then we come here in the template directory let's create it. make sure your file does not have any space. so i'm going to remove this spacing and press enter. it did create the file. and now let's check the robottxt. now, if i refresh it, it looks still the same, because you cannot modify this data which you have here. if you want to uh modify this one, you can add things to it, but you cannot remove it because, uh, it is a risk if you remove download from here. so how you are going to modify this one, just check out one of the examples now. if you want to search like learn more about it, you can read in the documentation. it basically give an example of what a user agent is. robots is an object which have, like, different group. if i give you this example and i added in my file here, it is going to see if user agent value is equal to star. let's check out our code here which refer to this one user agent equal to star. it is going to add a certain value here, so the values disable. i start anything which is start with a queue. currently we don't have this one to prove you. okay, just like you should know, it is not there and for now i will save it. now let's come here, refresh it. once you refresh it, you can see it appearing here. now, anything which is after this query which is similar to the search page, and so far you can ignore this when you can disable it to all crawlers, for example, you can add another example if i just duplicate this line and say anything which is okay, you can write a regular expression here, but i'm going to say private mode, which is a private page. maybe it is. it is just for demo. nothing like private exists here. i refresh it and you can see this is the private uh mode which appear here and you can search for any other user agent also, like google artsbot. you can search for any other thing. you can add your own if you want. so here is a like a full uh example of how you can like remove the default one. so you can come here and look through them and you can search for any rule and if you see the rule that the like redirect is equal to disallow, you can change it to policy. whatever you want to do, you have the flexibility to do this one and also you can add things to the cyborg. the last example that they give you is you can add url to your for my website. this is the sidemap and if i check it, this is how much uh, uh like links i have. if you don't know what is sidemap, it is basically what you see on the google page, for example, if you search for any brand in the homepage of the google, they are going to show you some links as a sub category and those are all the top cut like links which every brand have. so if i come here, you can add the sidemap here with your own sitemap url, if you have. you might have a separate sitemap url so you can use that one and that's basically it. um, i hope it has been informative and really great feature by shopify. i know it took a long time, but they did it finally. so, however, it has been informative. thank you for watching and i will see you in the next video.

Learn How To Create or Edit Robots.txt File on Shopify Store (Dawn Theme)
hey, guys, welcome back to another short tutorial, and today's tutorial is about customizing the robotstxt file in Shopify. so robotstxt file is for search engines, to let search engine know if the website is indexable or not. we can customize the robotstxt page to let search engine know if any specific page we don't want to index or if this website is indexable or not. if you want to learn more about search engine optimization, i have a separate playlist for search engine optimization where you can learn more about how to rank Shopify website, how to add google analytiks, how to add search console on your website. so do check out the playlist. you will see the link on this video. and today's tutorial is about adding custom robotstxt file on your Shopify store. so let's jump into the tutorial. so, guys, we are on our development store. it's a development store of Shopify. you can create development stores for free for the testing purposes and once you're comfortable with your development stores, you can make your website live. so first of all, let's check how the robotstxt looks like. so that's the default robotstxt file for the development stores. if we go on live websites, there's a default layout for Shopify stores. so let me show you one of the live websites on how the robotstxt on the live site looks like. so this is one of the Shopify stores which we have built for clients and when we go to the robotstxt for that store, you can see the default robotstxt file for your Shopify store. the tutorial is for customizing the robotstxt file which you see on our screen. now let's go to the back end of our Shopify store. to go to the backend, you'll have to type slash admin in front of your Shopify store URL and after that you will see a login mode. I'm already logged in, so I'm seeing the dashboard. from dashboard, click on online store and from online store themes you can see your currently activated team. so before doing any changes, I suggest you guys create a backup by creating the duplicate theme of your live site. if you're working on a live website, make sure to create a duplicate so you do not mess up anything. now I'm assuming you have already done that. now click on edit code from actions and from there you can create a robotstxt file by adding a new template. so click on add a new template and from there you'll see a pop-up like this. from there you need to select robotstxt and click create a template. so that's the dynamic code for our robottxt file. and now, when I go to our development store and hit refresh, that's how our robotstxt looks like. now. if you're looking to disallow any specific page on your store and you don't want Google or any other search engine to index that page, you can simply add a disallow road disallow rule on your robottxt file. so just go to the end of the file, add this rule and mention the user agent. so user agent statik. it means that this rule is for all of the search engines, whether it is google, bing or any other search engine. there are other user agents, like google ad bots and etched of bots. so these are all the bot names. you can specify the bot if you are looking to mark your page, not index, for that specific user agent. for now I'll make it for all of the user agents. I'll just copy this and paste it here. now, when I hit save, I'll see this rule added on the bottom of our robotstxt file. all right, refresh. and now, as you can see, our disallow rule has been added to the bottom of the file. so if I change it and mention my special page which I don't want any of the search engines to index, I'll just add the URL here and hit save changes, hit refresh and here we go. our rule for disallowing this page for all of the search engines has been added. now all of this code is coming dynamically. we can remove this if you want. I do not suggest removing it, but you can remove this by removing the four here. so just remove all of this code here and hit save, and here we go. our robotstxt file is completely custom. we can add rules as per our needs if we do not want the default Shopify robotstxt file to hope this video was helpful for you guys. if that's the case, please subscribe to my channel. comment on the video below, like and share. until next video, have a great day.

How to Edit Robots.txt on Shopify (SEO Tutorial)
so we're in the middle of lock down here right now, as you can tell by this crazy thing right here, and i want to do a quick video anyway, because there's been really good news in the shopify, shopify sphere or world, or whatever you want to call it. so up until recently, there's kind of two main seo issues i found with shopify that can't really be customized. one is you can't customize or edit the robotstxt file, which is this video. the other, which is still an issue, is that you can't access cruel looks to see how robots and surgeons are crawling your website. that's a different story. it's never a problem, but finally we're able to modify your robotstxt now. until this time, the problem you'd have is you could set a page to no index, and no index basically means search engines will crawl this page and then you tell them: hey, please don't add this, please don't index this within your search engine. but the problem is they are still visiting the page and when you look at cruel budget, which is basically the amount of resources a search engine will allocate to crawl your website, there is usually a maximum that they're going to give to your website, simply based on the size and variation of your website. meaning that let's say you have a 5 000 page website but google doesn't really think you're good enough. it's a bad time. you're going to figure it enough an authority to crawl say 2 000 as pages because the other ones seem low quality or whatever else. but what can happen is they're only actually going to crawl 2 000 of your pages, meaning that regularly give or take again. this is a very basic example but, like three thousand are completely left out and not cruel, not updated whatsoever. this can cause massive issues where you're trying to rank a page and it's just not being updated or not being crawled whatsoever. so one solution for that is to kind of tell surgeons: hey, don't index this page, but they're still gonna crawl the page. just have to crawl all those pages. so what you can actually do instead of that is to put a rule inside of robotstxt to say, hey, don't crawl these pages of these directories, rather than saying don't index it after you've already crawled it. you can actually save the core budget by just blocking, say, 3 000 junk pages from being crawled all together. so then you control which three thousand pages they are cruel or two thousand. i forgot the example now, but the point is, if you have low quality content on your site, you can control that they're not crawled to better utilize that cruel budget. that is one of the main elements of tiknical seo. so what's really awesome now? this is a whole bunch of typical sort of issues that come up with shopify, like collections, such all collections- just types, collections, vendors and various different types of pages. there's tag pages, and that they're really just waste crawl budget and don't need to be indexed whatsoever. so nowadays we can go ahead and just block them at a robottxt level. so let me show you how we can go ahead and do just that. firstly, of course, you need to go into your shopify admin area and you want to go into your theme section and you want to go ahead and edit this theme. specifically, you want to edit the theme code. when you're in the theme code editor, you're going to see a list of all the templates, everything like that. you want to go ahead and click add new template. from here it's actually really really easy. it's going to say a list of different types of templates you want to create, select the one that says robotstxt. it's that simple- and then click create or add or whatever the text says. i don't actually know- the button right and at that point it's going to create a custom robot. so it takes the template file, which you can go ahead and customize and add new rules to, but by default it's already created to match the default rules that shopify create, which, out of the box, is actually pretty good. i got to give them some credit for that. but at this point now we can customize this and there's a few default problems that i believe shopify has that it may or may not happen depending on the setup, your store, but this is usually what i would do for most of my clients- fyi, if you don't know already, head over to logixcom and expel this on here, because it's a really weird spelling- and we can do your seo for you, whereas a video review of your shopify store, e-commerce store, or a full-on audit or a full-on monthly campaign if you need any help with doing this stuff for you. but on with the tutorial. here's a few basics that i usually recommend blocking on a robot that takes the level and include example code below how exactly to do that. so the first one is slash collections, slash all. if you ever looked at any shopify store, you're probably going to see this as a default collection that's created automatikally and what it contains is a list of every single product. the problem with this is that, well, it just doesn't really need to exist. the products are going to be indexable anyway via the category pages. you don't really need one category containing all products, and what usually happens as a result of this is you have this page is basically titles like products and your, your site name, and then it's paginated across. let's say you have 500 products. well, suddenly, if there's 30 page, it's well a lot of pages, right. so you can have 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 different pages. they're all just products page one products page, two, products paid free data, so on. it just adds up and adds up and it's really just tons of pages that are just very, very low quality. so usually i always set these to no index. better, now i can just block it in robot state. takes the level in this file and again the code that will show somewhere here or below will show you how to do that. i never. what i do is slash collections, slash vendors, question mark q equals and basically just q equals as the thing we're going to block, and basically this is a parameter url and it's a default collection for vendors and another one for types and it's basically a list of when you create a product, you type in the vendor name, it automatikally creates a new collection page for every single one of them. the problem with this is, by default, you cannot customize this, you cannot add descriptions, you can't change that page whatsoever, so it kind of sucks right. usually what you do, you're going to manually create a new collection for that, so that's just better. so again, it can lead to duplicate content. at that point we have two collections basically targeting the same keyword. so what i can do is normally i'd no index them now i would go ahead and block them out of robotstxt level, same for types, with just a list of when you select the type of product when you're creating your products. again it automatikally creates a new page for that and it simply doesn't need to be there. it doesn't add any value and cannot be customized again out of the box anyway. so again, usually i would block them at a robot 60 level. not to mention that both of these have really, really ugly urls. if you're looking at it, it's like yourwebsitecom collections- vendors, question mark queue equals vendor name and if you have a space in that vendor name, then it literally has a space in url, so it's like first percent, 20 seconds, right, so it just looks ugly. essentially the other two types i may block at a robot city txt level, dependent on the site, is product tax. when you create products, you can assign tax on them. these are usually accessible under, say, such collections: slash the name of that collection, slash the name of the text would be: slash collections, sofas, slash lever, stuff like that. right, in many cases people name these kind of ugly sort of name it like filter, underscore, lever and it looks really bad. and frankly, again you have the same issue that out of the box, you cannot customize these, you can't add any content to them, so it just leads to a whole bunch of low quality pages essentially. so again, normally i would set into no index and nowadays i can also b.

Fix Robots Txt blocked issue
Highland. this is Maggie from rock paper copy and this is the Google search console. I'll show you how to fix the issues mentioned. obviously your Google search console will be different because this is from our website, but I will show you how to find, how to find the area to to fix those robotstxt noindex issues. I mean, these are not notnot index, but still robotstxt problem. so basically, go to coverage and you should have zero errors, zero warnings. some of the pages will be exclude. obviously your pages will be different, but go to the one that blocked by robotstxt and see how many of God and if you click on the page- each page you will be able to, you will be able to basically look into that issue a little bit. further. block so obviously crawling is allowed. it does it. it means that the Google still can, yeah, Google still can index, but obviously doesn't crawl because it is being blocked. it I, you can unblock it. I'll just show you how to do it. so go back to the same place and click on the link. and click on this one, I believe it opens in a new tab and here you will be able to see which, which part of the coding actually causes a problem. and now the difficult part is going to your domain registrar or domain house, a, basically company that hosts your URL. mmm, if it's Shopify, I would contact them with assistance. if it's any other domain host, such as GoDaddy, our 1.com, you would be able to log in to your admin and search for the file, search for the files for the website. you will have to find this partikular file, this allow WP admin. if you delete it from the list and save, this should fix the issue and then all you have to do- it's just odd. after this is obviously fixed, after it disappears, you have to allow this one- I'm not sure if it will work actually- and then submit. it probably won't crowd. I'm just check if it okay, see, so all you have to do is just add, allow this partikular and it actually fixed the issue. so this was as easy as that. and if I go back to coverage again, see if I can see it: yeah, it's still robotstxt. yeah, so it's still kind of not naturally fixed. so it has to be fixed by going to the. yeah, by going to the domain domain registrar and fixing and fixing this. it could be a little bit tricky, but if you need help, please, please, let me know. I'd be happy to help you, but this is a great way to fix it. another way is what I mentioned during the consultation, basically linking to this partikular page. that is, that is blocked by the robots linking to it from an external page, and it will. it will give Google access to index page. I hope you found it useful, but if you've got any questions, obviously please let me know. thank you so much for your time. bye, bye.
