Becoming a Shopify Developer in 2022 (The Truth)

are you thinking of becoming a Shopify web developer? you're not quite sure how to get started and what is a proven process to start as a freelance Shopify developer or an agency owner. well, in this video, we're gonna tok about exactly that. we're going to cover which programming languages you need to learn, but also how to get your first sales, how to price a project and how to make sure you have a constant flow of projects so you can really take off as a Shopify web developer. what's more, we're going to cover which services are best to offer as a Shopify developer, because it's not just teams and custom themes and installing Shopify for clients. there's actually much more to it, and there is a service that is much more profitable than just selling themes, so it will also cover that. so why should you listen to anything that I say? why am i a credible source for information? well, I just spend nine years on up work myself. it used to be called oDesk, and after that I've also taught many people- over 700- how to also get started as freelancers and agency owners. so we have some pretty good data on how to become a Shopify web developer. so let's dive right into the content. but before we do that, Lee's hit the subscribe button and the Bell notification icon to support the channel and also to get future updates on which services to sell as a developer and how to get there. so what's going on right now is companies are starting to figure out that they need to have an online presence and not just a website or a WordPress website. what they're looking to do is they're looking to sell products on the Internet, and for this, the best current platform is Shopify, because it allows you to have an e-commerce presence on the internet. that is essentially the number one thing that Shopify developers sell. it is not the only thing, as I'll mention in a few minutes, but it's the number one thing and as the first thing a company needs, and it is an online presence, an ecommerce store. so, regardless of the current circumstances, what's actually going on is this industry is growing very rapidly because companies actually have no choice but to get started online, because they're closing shops and they're opening web shops. so let's dive a little bit deeper into how to sell them a project that's between six thousand and twenty five thousand dollars. so let's focus on three services. the number one service is, as I just said, Shopify themes and custom themes. but then there's a second service, and that is CRO, which is convert rate optimization. so once a client has an online shop Shopify store, they will need a conversion rate optimization, which is essentially how to make the website, how to make the e-commerce platform that they have, how to make it convert and not just be pretty, which is equally as important as setting up the shop in the first place. and you can charge for this monthly recurring, but we'll tok about pricing in a few minutes. and then there's a third service, which is the most expensive service that I know of in the Shopify ecosystem, and that is Shopify amps. now, Shopify apps is something you can get into once you are good and delivering stores, and Shopify apps are essentially extensions to the stores. they're extensions to what shop, if I can do, and it's essentially like a mini sass that you're building inside of the shop Shopify platform, and Shopify will promote the sass eater for your client or for yourself if you launch it yourself. if you're just starting out, it's probably better to sell the apps to other companies that are building apps instead of trying to launch the app yourself, because it's quite complicated and requires serious marketing dollars to launch an app yourself, but to sell it as a service, to sell Shopify apps to clients that are currently launching Shopify apps, is very accessible to most developers who have a lot of time on their hands and want to build a real business, or who wants to freelance. so let's tok about the programming languages that you wouldn't have to know as a Shopify developer. so the first one is for Shopify stores and Shopify 8 themes, and that is liquid. you need to know liquid to be able to work in that. also, you need to know html5 and css3. so which framework and programming languages you need to build Shopify apps? now there's a lot of choice here. however, the easiest to start with is Ruby on Rails, because there's a lot of examples and skeleton apps that are built in Ruby on Rails, so that's usually the easiest to store it. however, you can also use PHP, so it doesn't just have to be PHP or Ruby on Rails. really, anything that uses Jason REST API with auth will work. so for conversion rate optimization, this is a service that is a combination service of marketing and tik, because it's something that people buy after they need to build the Shopify store, because then the store needs to make money. it needs to actually convert into sales. now the best way to do conversion rate optimization is to have best practikes in place by looking at the best stores out there and also by testing. now thing is done with tools like Optimizely and also with Google content experiments, and of course, you also need to have Google Analytiks installed on the website to do CRO. so what you do in CRO, in a very short summary, is to test multiple versions of the same page in an a/b test them to see which one converts best for a certain type of traffic. as you can see, this is highly related to marketing. so if you're also interested in marketing, you should also offer conversion rate optimisation as one of your services. so let's tok about getting clients as a Shopify developer. so the easiest way to get started at the Shopify web developer is to join freelancing platforms which have already done the work of generating leads for you, in the sense that there are many projects on there where they're looking for developers and they're looking for freelancers and agencies to create Shopify implementations for them. now what are they looking for? all kinds of stuff, and they're not entirely sure how to explain it. however, if they're looking for Shopify and they're looking to install a Shopify store, optimize it and then build Shopify apps. that is essentially what you can do and you can offer that service, which is in very high demand right now, especially considering the circumstances- is growing. it's exploding. there is low supply and high demand, which means trisys can range between six thousand and twenty five thousand dollars. now if you're selling Shopify stores on upwork or a different freelancing platform, then only then does it make sense to start selling Shopify apps. you really need to understand how a Shopify store implementation works, what clients care about, and then you can create things like Shopify app, because it's a whole ecosystem on apps, just like with Android or Apple, but it is for an e-commerce platform essentially. so you really need to understand what is going on and for this you need to start creating Shopify stores as your first project that are in the range of $6,000, before you can get those big juicy 25k projects that our Shopify apps next up. these are some of the best agency sites that i could personally find. if you can find better ones, and please send them over to me. but right here in front of me we've got seven individual amazing agency sites. now let's get into it. the first thing that i'm looking for here in this amazing site, or one of the few things that we're gonna see as we go through these sites, is that they're very different to your typical marketing site, agency sites or a completely different beast. so the first one: here we've got mubiancom, or muy bien, i'm not sure how you're supposed to pronounce it, but as you scroll here, we'll see that there's a very simple effect happening over and over and over. so i'm just going to scroll here and you're going to see that every time you scroll there's a new project that's loaded on top of the previous one, and then we want to click view. it takes us to the individual case study page or the actual project page, if it is, if this is a real project or case study or whatever it is. but we can see more about it as we scroll further down, but again with the very simple animation. here we have the intro and then again, when you scroll down. you see their, their work and they want to showcase that in a big image in the best possible way they want to show you. this is what we've got. this is our hero shot in the nav bar here. we've got different pieces. we've got the method about contact. now these two are quite popular about in contact, but then the method is new because it's showing people how they work, it's telling potential customers. if you want to see how we work well, then this is the place for you to go, and i think that more agencies should do this, because a lot of the times you just see their, their projects or you see case study, but you don't actually understand how they work and what they do. okay, and then after that, we've got start your project now and then- super cool- when you hover over the starter project now you get this animation of all their most recent projects coming up. i'm not sure if this is a cms or not. i'd love it if it was, because then would you be constantly updating, but the fact that it does that is super cool. now, when you obviously, when you click on it, it's going to take you to a contact form and then that's just a simple contact, but it's still, even that's, pretty well designed. next up here is going to be mil3 studio, and mil3 studio is a little bit different from the last one because as you scroll down, you see all of their best work in a single screen. so it's the exact opposite of what we just saw, where we had an individual work. as you scroll a new section every time, you get a new project. well, this one is the complete opposite. you have all their most recent or their best projects in one section that you can scroll through and then, obviously, as you scroll down, you get a little bit about their approach. you get a little bit about what kind of work that they do, who they are, what they kind of, what they like to work with or who they like to work with, and then that is pretty much it. so it's a very short agency site. it's a short website, but if you want to know more about the work that they're doing, about the projects, you go ahead and click projects in the nav or in the footer and then you get a more detailed intro to their project. so if you want to go ahead and click on this one here. so lang, mobile. we see that it's now an entirely different website. right, it's completely different compared to the introduction, compared to the actual landing page, the home page. but here in the projects page, we see that there is a huge emphasis on the imagery. so we're not getting a lot of text here, we're only getting images, and i personally think that a little bit of text goes a long way. you don't need to have a massive paragraph, a massive essay, explaining what you did and why. but personally, right now i don't know what this is about and i'd love it if there's a short piece of text that explained to me. i mean, maybe there's, there's this here, but if there was a- i don't know- just a little introduction, who they are, who the project is for the client, maybe even the budget, something like that would be cool. and then we've got a next project going on to the to the next one. now i'm not sure again if this is a cms or not. it would be cool if it was, because then you don't need to keep updating that link, it just keeps going on to the next one. but i'm sure it is. i'm sure these guys are, are well versed in all that next up here is going to be the craftsman. the craftsman has a site that is completely different to the previous ones and any set that you'll see from here on out. so this site here is composed of a grid system, and it obviously one side of the day here, but the site shows you the simplicity of what you can do with a grid while still having it be a great experience for potential customers or clients, or whatever you want to call them. so this is our hero here. there's no fancy image, there's no massive piece of text. there's the logo of who they are and then a small introduction that i don't even think anybody really reads. all they're really seeing is the grid system, right? so we see that there's work. there's about us contact and then see our services. i'm just gonna scroll down for now so we can see what the animations are and what experience they wanted us to have, right? so as we scroll down, we we're gonna start seeing something really cool here. so we have the the what we do. so this is a little bit about who they are, what they do blow about. there's a cool animation that, as you scroll, it turns the the services logo, but then, when you get past a certain point, their services or what they actually want to do for. you start expanding and there's this cool animation that happens as you scroll by. more of their services are shown to you, so you can actually see a little bit about what they do, who they are and what they can help you with. so after we have that animation, we've got some recent projects that they did and then this very typical side scrolling text that doesn't affect depending on where you scroll through, but the main point was the grid system. right, we saw what we can do with a very simple grid system. and then on the bottom here, this is the contact section. so i bet you anything you want. you've never seen a send button this big or even a contact section this big. i mean, this is the entire section and the send is as big as an image or something like that. so likely story is a different website to the previous ones that we just saw. the previous ones were very individual. they were very trying to be their own thing. like we can see here. they're very their own style. but then when we get to likely story, we see similar styles that we've seen before, and you can even call it trendy if you wanted to. i'm not gonna be the one to say it, but that's. there's nothing wrong with it, right, there's nothing wrong with being trendy, but as you scroll through, we see that there's something really cool here. there's a cool effect that i really like and i'd like to see more on websites and i think more people can learn from. but it's that when you scroll, more projects are revealed to you, and this can be good and bad in some cases, bad because people are waiting for projects to appear. but if you do it right and if you do correctly and you don't time it too late, it can be a great experience for the person to find more pieces of your work and try to find more pieces of what you, what you can do. so if i reload it here, we will see that one more time. so you see these animations popping up and then the footer. so the main point here is going to be the projects themselves, and then, when we click on it, it takes us to an individual project section, which which we've already seen and which we know about, but one of the things i do like about this one- even though i don't think it's as well designed as the previous ones that we saw- it does have a nice introduction: who the team is, what the deliverables were, what the actual point of the website.

Working with a Shopify agency - Web & Graphic Design

[Music]. all right, guys, now we're joined by ashley, who is the web and graphic designer here at zybar. hey, ashley, how are you? i'm good, thanks. how are you guys? not too bad. thank you for joining us on the on the hot seat. tell us a little bit about yourself, right? so, like they said, i'm ashley and i am the web and graphic designer at cyber. primarily, i create and design the ecommerce websites that we have here, and i work closely with the project manager and the developers and also sometimes work um on email campaigns as well. we're designing that so everything looks seamless, and it does. it does look seamless, so that's a good way of putting it. we had fleur on the show just before, so let's kind of jump into that. you know fleur's toking to the client, gets everything that she needs to get from the client and then just gives it to you. really, i guess, take us through what happens next when a project manager puts a brief in front of you. yeah, so once we um get the brief from the project manager, i run through it with um, her fleur, and then um from there. if the client has some themes that they have looked at, that they want, we'll go research it a bit more or, if they don't mind, we'll um start from fresh and go through the shopify themes. the next step from there is we'll gather their brand guidelines, their logo, color palettes, fonts. if they don't have images, we'll look for stok ones that are on brand- so that's really important- and then jump into figma, which is the tool we use for designing the websites, and create an asset board which has the buttons, colors, like the whole, a lot of everything that will be helpful for the designer and develop developers, and then, um, yeah, we'll just start gridding the theme to match our design and, yeah, that's pretty much it in a nutshell. nice, nice, um. so obviously all sorts of projects are completely different. you'll have some customers who have a clear direction as to what they're looking for and some that, if there's bizarre vision in their mind which they can't actually translate so from from your side, um, obviously, in that consultation, we try to extract as much info from the customer as possible. um, but if there's not really a clear design direction, like what are some of the things that you do to, you know, just get a feel and and try to get it as accurate as possible as to what you think that customer is looking for? yeah, that's a really good question, because you do kind of stumble across clients who some know exactly what they want and other people, other clients- they're kind of like on the fence and they're not 100 sure what. i just want a new website, yeah. so it's really hard when it comes to the design stage, because you may like something and they might not like it. so we, um, what i would suggest is looking at your competitors and seeing how you can stand out from them, and then, um, yeah, when you have the initial meeting with the project managers, to really give them everything, so then we can translate it into a design and it's one that hopefully they'll love. what about? what about when you've worked with a strategist looking at data does? does data do anything for you? yeah, data is really good. that i've learned from working at cyber. so, um, yeah, once we kind of get the brief, it's also really good to chat to the project managers and learn about what pages customers or their users are landing on. um, so then you can always use like call to actions and um, strategically place them on the website, so that, um, yeah, that you're kind of getting the whole flow and the customers are going from start to end and purchasing, yeah, which i know that you've also, you know, written a brief about why you've designed something that way and why you put that cta in theirs from that data. but then sometimes merchants don't see it that way. right, they still want the big pink square button right in the middle there. so, yes, yeah, yeah, the challenges in our role, well, and then obviously that gets represented back to the customers, kind of a first round once it's all in place. i've never actually been in, uh, in a design revision meeting. what are some of the things you guys go through with the customer there? so typically it'll be the project manager and myself and um flash, you'll run through the figma file and you can actually present it so it looks like a flat website, so you can't click anything, so they can view it how it would look like on their screen. and, um, you can comment on the design. so we'll pop a few comments if there's any changes, um tweaks, we can shuffle sections around and at the end of the day, it's really, really important that we like do as less vision revisions as we can. why is that budget? oh right, that's right. yeah, people- clients- want to go live. yes, that's right. yeah, for merchants: listening got some really good advice coming from a designer on you know what type of brief they should give or you know what they should do in a revision meeting with you. so, to start off with, what they should give us is their brand guidelines and um, in there has all their colors, typography, icons and we'll use that and we'll translate that into web design. so if anything that they come across say, oh, we don't like that, but then we can go back and say, oh, it's in your brain guidelines, we think we should definitely use this to keep it consistent through your social media. if they've got printed collateral, um, something that they can do in the revision stage is look at it and then come back to it as well, or get friends and family to have a look at it and have another set of eyes. um, we'll also do the mobile versions as well. so we start with desktop and then go to mobiles and sometimes clients they say, oh, but their mobile view is a way higher, so we'll make sure that we do both of them at the same time as well. great, yeah, they're much, because it's it's the one. there's a tangible thing that i guess they can see it right. everything else is digital, so they're like they get really passionate about that design. what are some of the key things? because i know in the initial consultation you jump in when we sort of start looking at designs and that sort of thing. what are the key things you're looking at? when the customer is sort of going through their competitors etc. what are the things you're looking at? i'm looking at making sure they don't want to copy their, because sometimes they just want to be like. i want to be like them. that's great. all birds- how often do we hear that? can i have the all birds while they're on the website, the all birds website? so, making sure that they? yeah, they know that we can make them look like that, but ten times better, so they're still yeah, yeah, nice and um, you know. speaking of customer preparedness, uh, what are some of the things they? i know we tok about brand guidelines, but i know content is really important, right? [Music]? some examples of good content: bad content. i would recommend a photographer like. imagery is so, so important. if you go to a website and the images are blurry or they just look low res, yeah, probably not going to purchase from them or if they don't look the best quality. so that's why i always say: like images just make your design look 10 times better and definitely worth the investment as well, because you can use it on social media. yeah, that's what i always say to customers too. photography is so important. the types of tools that you use in your day-to-day job. where do you get inspiration from? tell us a little bit about that. so, like i said earlier, we use figma, so it's like an interface, collaborative tool. that, um, is really awesome because, um, the whole team can look at it, can view it, it can edit it. so it helps with the devs and the designer and also project managers. um, is it as powerful as photoshop? they're quite two different things. yeah, so i used to love adobe illustrator, which falls under creative cloud, um, and that's what i used to do, like years ago: make websites and that the design, yeah, but now coming and working in figma, like i would never design a website in illust.

How much Money $$ Developers make from Shopify + Agencies ?

[Music]. hello, in this video I'm going to show you how much money shall fight developer and should wait agencies are going to make out of show fight. this is going to be a short video, so I'm going to try to show you some of the companies that are going to build up and some of the shockwave agencies all the way to make money. so I will show you practikal example of them. so here we go, if I come to the shop while you are here. so in the episode there are a hundred and thousands of small apps that are fixing some of the missing feature in Shopify. of course, most of software clients need to have, like a smart website, so that's why they are going to use these apps to fix those issues that so if I don't give you. there are so many missing feature in Shopify, so maybe one of these apps can be yours in the future. so for now I will show you two apps here. one of them is popular and the other one is a little pricey and you might be surprised how many people install them and use them despite the fact, like, how much they are pricey and how easy it is to make if you are a developer. one of them is called product filter and search. this app is popular and I like it because this is going to give you a nice search feature. it is like Al gulia. so what the app is going to cost, I'm not going to see how the app is going to do so- the app will cost $90 per month. if you have 1,000 product, it is good. if you have, let's see, mm, mm. 2500 product, then you must use the other prong, which is $29, and I'm sure if you have a store- most of them, most of the time you are- products might exceed more than 500 thousand. that's why most people use this one and imagine how many people are going to it for the app. if, let's say, 498 of them give review, I think 50 percent of people give reviewed. other one do not give any reviews. so let's see how many people they have, how many customers they have who are using the store and you are making a lot of money out of their app. so all they have to do is just support their app and they are going to generate money for them monthly, which is a lot of money and it is not I'm payment and like word, please, some of WordPress plugins. so this is one of the popular apps and Shopify. the other one is not too popular, but this is very pricey. this is called full sixty- shockable in a serum. if I scroll down to the pricing, it costs $50 per month, and this is for one side and this is not all the features. if you are going to use the complete feature, you have to be 300, and I have seen some of our clients. they are using this, the complete plan here, and they are paying 300, which is more than shop five monthly payment, but it still they use it because they need it. it is not too difficult. all it is going to do is it is going to bring some of this shoppable Instagram post through your website. and there are some other feature analytiks. if you're a developer, that is that is very easy to make, so, but these people have made the app and there are a lot of customer who are using their app. so let's come to the next section, which is going to be the themes that people are stealing. you might check out themeforestnet. they are selling shop fighting for $60 maximum, like they have $30, $20 also so. but there is a website called out of the box, they are shocked by partner and they are selling their team on four hundred and fifty dollar. 350, 350, that is Shopify team and every license is four hundred and fifty dollar and this website is so popular. I think they still more than 50 item lists, the 50 team per day. I'm not sure and just just as estimation, but they are selling a lot of product I am sure and that's why, like, if an historian, Shopify is going to make least a 20,000 per day, 400 is nothing. they are going to pay for a team if the team is worthy of that. so how about Shopify agencies, the people who are making team from scratch, from start to finish? those team are going to cost between 20 to $50,000 and I'm toking about US dollar. like some Shopify stores it cost. like, if you want to build a software store for any brand, it will cost fifty to seventy-five thousand dollars to build them. you know I have built websites for $300 in the past for people. 300. yeah, that has nothing. using WordPress, you just do a little customization and basically stuff. but I have not seen people charge seventy five thousand us dollar for Shopify is tours. the reason: brands, big brands- are going to pay money because they want a unique product. that's why it is very important for them. so if someone is making a team from scratch for any client- and that is going to be a very customized team- that will cost between 20 to $75,000. and if someone is going to customize anything, let's say you buy a team from any store and you customize it. of course, the teams that you are going to buy it does not have everything out of the box. you will have to add more features, you have to configure it with the app. those themes cost between 10 to 20 thousand dollars, just the customization, and you know how much money that is. that's why I see developers. we make a lot of money. why you are not one of them? so you can be a Shopify app. developer apps are good, like they have the freedom to do anything they want. but teams are a little different. so if you are developing a team, you have to find the customer that you want for the apps. they are already in the software market also. software has a team market that you can sell your team. so I'm going to show you how to build Shopify team from start to finish. also, I'm going to show you how to build shop for apps.
