E-Commerce Web Design: How to Stand Out in 2020 | With Stunning Examples

e-commerce is on the rise, however, because everybody's using the same shopify templates- most ecommerce website just look the same. on this video we're going to tok about how to break away from the normal templates and make sure that your ecommerce website stands out. [Music]. hey everybody, what's up and welcome to flux. my name is ron segal and welcome back to the channel where we're dissecting web design freelance, how to make a living as a web designer. and today we're now in 2020, the year where, because of lots of lockdowns, e-commerce is on the rise and so many new brands are starting to get an approach directly to consumers instead of having to sell through supermarkets. so we have so much new e-commerce websites and most of them, as i've said in the intro, are using shopify. but when you want your brand to create some kind of a unique, special connection and stand out in the marketplace, then you need to rethink how you're building your ecommerce website, and i want to dissect two websites and explore two ideas that i think you should really pay attention to when you're designing your next e-commerce website. so the thing is, with most website, because they're using templates, most product pages are just standard and most product catalog are standard, and this is boring. they cannot tell a story this way. you cannot show how your product is different from other products if all you see is just the packaging and then a product page with a list of you know ingredients or something like this. let's take a look at some examples. so this is the website of ulele. it's a website for, i guess, revolutionary africans food. so the first way is to kind of explore the catalog and by scrolling you kind of move left to right. so this is, to begin with, it's kind of playful right, and then let's pick one to dissect. so we're, let's pick this blue one. then we're moving into the product page. now what we have here is, first of all, a very kind of clear. you see the price, you can click to buy. but when we're starting to scroll, then we have this kind of a clear kind of storytelling what you're getting inside: a lot of images, and while we have these things- the price and the buy button- always stiking with us. however, we can kind of have a more story in here, right? so what do you? what do you notike, right? so we have kind of a unique layout right now. we got to explore some more products, but we have a unique layout right already breaks it down, gives you more, much more place and focus on telling a story and together with that, you know we have really great our direction of putting the product in context, how it's going to be used and giving you a little bit of a a demo of the experience. now another one is for this chocolate bar. when you're landing on it you're dropping into kind of a very weird actually layout where at the top you're getting this, this video, we kind of share how the chocolate is being made, where it's coming from, and it gives you kind of a little bit more insight about the company and their values are. now, when you start actually scrolling down, now again we have kind of a scrolling experience of exploring the, the different bars that they're selling. so again, not a boring, you know, see them in the grid, each one. they're giving you a little bit of context, with you know seeing the, the ingredients flying around and the color, so you can get to decide which one you want to explore. and when you're clicking it, you know you're actually opening it up and then you discover it right, so it stays with you and again you feel like in kind of in a continuous, continuous experience, and you know we can explore this and we we can. we have more place to tell the story and how it's different, even though we're. we have to share all the kind of nutrition and all the other things, and at the end you add it to the box and then you can move into the next one. so the things that i want you to pay attention to are two very important things. the first one is art direction. you really have to invest in how you present the product itself, whether it is, you know, taking a photo of it- very clean and allowing for interaction because you've kind of dissected all the different aspects of the product- or you're taking photos of the, the product in context. you can't really just like put in products on a white background anymore. this is so boring, people are fed up with it. you need to share a little bit more context about the product and the art direction has so much effect on it. the second thing is by breaking down the traditional layout. it gives you much more space for storytelling and by storytelling you can show how you're different and you can create the bond with the users and convince them that your product is a great fit for them. so pay attention to these two things: how you can story tell by breaking out of the traditional layout and great creating, great art direction by taking specific photos of your product, either in context or by breaking them down, so you'll be able to use interactions to kind of show the opening experience and what's inside the package. i hope this was helpful for you. we'll see you on the next video. bye-bye.

okay, guys, let's get serious for one sec. what is shopify? it's a tool that allows you to sell online- simple as that. so if you want to start a side hustle- maybe you're selling like gym equipment- you'd basically go ahead and make an account with shopify to create an online store and then you can start making money. so shopify lets you sell online through a website. you can use shopify to sell in person through a pos, and you can even use shopify to sell on social media and online marketplaces. so the nice thing about shopify is that it has these built-in tools that are really going to help you through digital marketing. you can create, execute and analyze your digital marketing campaigns. also, shopify has this amazing single dashboard to manage your orders, your shipping and your payments pretty much anywhere you go, and the thing that i like to know is that millions of the world's most successful brands are currently using shopify. that being said, you can be a big business and use shopify. you can also be a small business and you can pretty much sell almost anything- guys- almost anything. don't get any crazy ideas. so, yeah, you can be anyone, you can be anywhere and you can use shopify and be successful. shopify plans and pricing- okay. so, like any millennial, i have a serious fear of commitment. so the fact that shopify has a 14 day free trial, that was pretty necessary for me. i know it would probably be necessary for some of you guys as well. so what i would recommend? literally before you do anything, before you keep watching this video, just click the link in the description box so that you guys can sign up for a free shopify trial. like, literally, do it right now, because you're going to want to do this with me, step by step. so pause this video, do what you got to do, sign up. got it? okay, amazing, let's get started. so, if you notike, there is no credit card required to get this free trial, which is really great, because if you're not into it, no harm, no foul, but if you do love it by the end of this series, you're going to have a brand new shopify store, which is really amazing. so if you do decide you love it and you want to keep your store, what's going to happen is you're going to be on a free plan, so you're going to need to graduate to a paid plan so that you can start accepting real sales. so let's tok about pricing and all the options that you have. so, as far as paid plans go, you're gonna have a few options. if you are a new business, i would recommend you just get the basic plan. that's gonna be 29 a month. that's going to be probably best for most of you. watching the next plan up is pretty similar, but a key difference is that you get a bigger shipping discount. this plan is probably going to be good for a business that's already somewhat established. now, the highest here is the advanced shopify account. this is for the big guys. so if you guys have a number of staff that are gonna all need access to your shopify account, this plan will probably be right for you. if you uh want really in-depth analytiks, this is also gonna be right for you, but i think, for the most part, for most of you guys that are watching. i think the basic plan will probably cut it. so that's what we're gonna be looking at today: how to create a shopify account. okay, so now we actually gotta go in and sign up with shopify to set up our store. so follow along, folks. i'm gonna put this on screen and i'm gonna speed this up because i think this is pretty easy. um, yeah, you can pause if you need to. amazing, okay, so by default, you get this: like ugly, my shopify url. it's gonna look like this one here, but instead we want something that's going to be like clean and easy to remember, like this one here. so let's get a custom domain so that we can cover up this ugly url from your shopified man. you're going to go to online store and then you're going to click domains. you're going to click buy- new domain- and then you're going to enter the domain name that you want. okay, after that, you got your perfect domain, so you're going to click buy and then you're going to receive an email from shopify and it's just going to be confirming your purchase, which is great. now don't worry, guys, if this doesn't come right away. sometimes it can take like 48 hours for your new domain to start working. but other than that, we're groovy. we got our new domain name and it's great, so love that. for us. now, guys, it is time to get creative. this is literally my favorite part. so let's start our web design off by choosing a theme. okay, listen, guys. as business owners, we have a lot to think about, so you can either sit and go through all the themes and take an hour to find the perfect theme, or you can literally just choose dawn. dawn is literally one of my favorite themes, just because it's just so easy. it is a brand new theme, so what you would do is you would just basically activate it like flip that switch on um as you start your account. so if you guys aren't already familiar with don, let me show you. let me just tell you a little a little something about dawn. so it is one of shopify's best themes because it just has all these incredible features that help you make more sales for one and secondly, you can really just express your brand with this theme. so i personally love dawn. it's just such an easy option, so let's do it. who is ready to add dawn? so this is how you're gonna do it: we're gonna go to online store. we're gonna hit themes and then we're gonna scroll down to the visit shopify theme store. okay, so from there we're gonna go and search dawn, and here it is. this is dawn, a brand spanking new theme that literally just dropped last year, and it is free, which i love. and, guys, you see these other free theme options here. we've got crave, we've got craft, this one's called sense, which i love. this is taste and studio, and these are all brand new themes i just dropped and they are so sick. i love all of these. so if you're not love and dawn, you have other options, and they're really just designed to help you get started more quickly and get you up and running in a pinch. so when you create your online store with shopify, you can choose between free themes and premium themes, and the free ones that we just looked at are great, but here are some really amazing premium themes as well. uh, these are going to be paid right, so this one is drop, this is bullet, and this is be yours. these are beautiful, gorgeous themes. um, there's also other themes to choose from, other than the ones that i've just toked about, but let's say you're, you know, go.

Customize your Shopify Theme FAST | How to Design Shopify Store 2021

let's be honest, your store design matters, and if you have a really ugly site, people are just going to leave and they're not going to purchase from you. so in this video, i'm going to show you exactly how to customize your shopify store design. as soon as someone comes to your site, they only have about seven seconds before they decide if they want to look longer on your site or leave. so those seven seconds really matter and design matters when it comes to that. you want to make sure that your site is eye-catching and it really speaks to your ideal customer. so how do you do this? you really need to pick out your shopify theme and make sure that it works based on what kind of imagery you have. if you have a lot of really great big images, then pick a theme that's going to highlight those. but if you don't have a lot of great product shots, then you want to make sure that you pick a theme that's not going to be heavily reliant on that. once you've chosen your shopify theme, then it's time to customize it, and this is where it's important to create different assets, choose your fonts and colors to make sure that it's appealing for your ideal customer. so this is super important, but a lot of times people kind of overlook the design step. so i'm going to show you really quickly how to actually customize your design in the back end of shopify for both your home page, collection page and product page. so to get here, you're going to click on online store and then you'll see themes there from the list. so now that we are on the themes page, you can see your live theme here. this is what your customers are actually seeing whenever they come to your site, as well as your online store speed. we've done another video on how to speed up your site, so i will link that in the description below and in the info cards above as well. and you can also see the theme library so you can upload your theme if you've purchased it somewhere else, or you can explore the different theme options available. so, for example, if you click on explore free themes, you'll actually see a pop-up of all of the different free themes that are available here. the one problem with this is, if you click into it, you can't really see how the site overall looks, as well as how it looks on mobile. you can just kind of see the different styling aspects. so what i do recommend that you do is actually visit the theme store. so if we just click on this here, you can see the full theme store, and this is both free and paid themes. so what i like to do whenever i'm trying to decide on a theme for a shopify store is i'll actually go to all themes up here at the top and then you can see the sidebar here of sorting options so you can actually sort through and you can see. you know, based on you just want to see themes that are just for single products. so if you click on that, then it shows you just that product or specifications on the right hand side so you can better narrow down what kind of theme that it is that you are looking for. so if we unclick this, let's just go ahead and go with a free theme and we can click on free here and now we can see all of the different free themes. that, again, we did see in that pop-up already. but the difference is now we can actually click on the theme, we can again see the different styles that it includes as well as we can view the demo. so if we click on this here, we can now actually view the demo of the theme, see exactly how it looks, as well as a really important feature, which is seeing how it looks on mobile. so if we click on this mobile phone device, we can then see how it looks on mobile devices. so we also just posted a video about how important it is for mobile devices and stylizing your site. so i'll also link that below if you want to get a little bit more information on how to make sure that your site is really performing well on mobile devices. so if you decided that you wanted to go with this theme, you would just hit add theme here. let's go back to our shopify store backend and we're just going to go ahead and use the default brooklyn theme that we already have set up. so you have a couple options. you can click on actions. you can rename the theme, duplicate it so that that way you have a copy of the original. you can also download the theme file and edit the code. so this would be if you knew exactly. you know specific things that you could edit in. or if you were a developer, you could go in and edit the code. you just want to be careful here because you don't want to make any changes that you're not going to be able to fix, and then it's going to edit your site and you're going to have issues. you can also change the languages of how things appear on your site, so this would be more tiknical terminology. so you can go in and do these different options. but what we're going to be doing in this video is we're going to be customizing this theme. so i'm just going to go ahead and click customize here and now we can see here we've got some default things added in on the left hand side that we can customize as well, as this is the default setting. so we're going to start going through and doing these different options. i do want to mention real quickly that this is just a test site that i'm using for this video. so all of the images and products that i'm using are from a company called rifle paper company. if you like any of the products or images that are featured here, definitely go check out their site at riflepapercodecom. so back to our site here. let's just start off first with the header area. so you can see, here this header area is going to be default and standard throughout our entire site and that's right here, with the logo that we will change out, as well as our navigation. also, if we scroll down to the bottom, you can see here there is a footer area that's going to be the same throughout our site as well, and then all of these areas in between are specific to this home page design. so we'll go ahead and do the header and the footer first, and then we can come back to the home page design. so let's click on header and then we can see all of the options that are specific to this header. so first off, we can add in an image here so we can hit select image, and i've already got a few added in. but you could just click upload and upload that from your computer as well. but i'm just going to add our logo in, click on it and hit select. we can then see that we can change the width of this so we can make it bigger if we wanted, or we could make it smaller. all the themes are going to have different options based on the theme that you choose, so you're not going to see exactly what i'm seeing in terms of the options here, so you'll just want to go in and play around a little bit. we can also change the color for links and icons and have a transparent header. so right now we have- this is our big slideshow image and we have our logo and stuff laying on top of it. if we didn't want to do that and we wanted it to be a white bar behind it or another color, we could just click on this here and now we can see that's a little bit more prominent. so let's go ahead and leave it like that. if you were going to have your logo over the homepage slideshow, this theme does have additional options, like you can add a white version of your logo or change the header, links and icons, just to make sure that it shows up a little bit more. we can also see here we have different types for navigation. if we wanted it to how we wanted the navigation to display, we will just keep that as it is. we can also see we could change the menu out, so we just have one menu for the main menu area here, but we could go in if you had multiple different types of menus and you could change that out. and there is a secondary sidebar menu which would, i'm guessing, show on mobile devices. so we'll just keep that at the footer menu for now. and lastly, we have different things here for the announcement bar. so that's this up here at the top, so we can choose to only show this on the home page. change out the text.

5 Website Types & How To Design Them | Free Web Design Course | Episode 16

on today's episode, we're going to cover the five biggest types of websites and what you should look for when you're designing them. stay tuned. [Music]. hey everybody, what's up? my name is ron segal. welcome back to the free web design course. now, while we're always toking in this course about web design is, if websites are all one thing, obviously there is different types of website and you need to mind and look for different types of things and care about actually different types of aspects when you're designing each of them. so in this video, i want to cover the five biggest ones and what you should think about, and let's break it down with examples, as always. hope this is going to be super helpful for you. by the way, like this video, subscribe. hit the bell notification. a lot of awesome videos coming up, so make sure you're with us. now let's get started. we're going to get started toking about ecommerce website now. you're probably super familiar with e-commerce website because, like everybody, you're shopping online. we're all shopping online. but i want to tok about what you should be mindful of if you got a web design project, an e-commerce website, what you should look for, what you should focus on, what are the goals. so, obviously, when you're in e-commerce, the goal of the website is to sell a product. that means that the focus of an e-commerce website is to have you look at the product. so there's basically two things that are really, really important in terms of design. one is how you showcase the product, and that means both kind of the art direction. is this a photography? how do you shoot the the product? is it on a white background? is it when somebody's using it? is it from all different angles? you, you as a designer, need to art direct and think about the whole product: showcase experience. so that is one thing that is very unique about e-commerce that you, as a designer, need to think about. how are you going to present it? how are you going to design the product page to showcase- you know again- all the different variation of the product. if it has different colors, different sizes, different angles, you need to make sure that you show it in the best light possible. now the next thing that you should be designing with care, because the purpose here on this website is to sell this product. you want to make sure that the checkout experience is as well designed. this is really where the money is. so if you design a bad checkout process. you know your client is going to be losing money and so you want to make sure that you use the best practikes- and we're going to see this in a second in the example- to make sure that you know as many as people go through this process with trust. they understand that the process is secure, that you know they're gonna, they can, they can feel safe buying using this website. um, let's dive into an example and see this. so here's an of the website of all birds. this is a brand selling shoes. this website was designed by red antler and first thing you land on the website, boom, you see shoes on people with a great image. so the focus is the product. you scroll down and what do you see? shoes who's in all different use cases, scenarios, and they're trying to get you to either shop men or shop women. now this is where you know you'll see- and you've probably seen this before- categories and product grids, so you want to see all the different products available. this is the product page and again, here they're trying to show you all different angles. let you choose your size and colors and then, moving on to the checkout. by the way, this is the card every e-commerce website is probably going to have a card that's run down in the navigation. you can always drop in here. so this is the checkout experience. now, this website was built on shopify, so this is a pretty standard shopify checkout process, and what you'll see here is: you're this is not a single page checkout. they've broken it down- you can see it on the top- to kind of like three steps here, and the reason is they want you to put your email first, because not a lot of people finish the actual checkout process, so they want to make sure that you put your email first progress. and if you drop on at a later stage, before you're putting in your credit card, they're going to target you again. they're going to email you, they're going to show you ads to make sure that you go back and buy this. so breaking down the checkout process into multiple steps allows for this process, and it's very, very important because, again, this is where the money is all right. let's move to the next type of website, which is the marketing and business website. this is the most popular kind of website. why? because, obviously, every business in the world, which there are millions and millions of all of them- needs a website. now, where not all businesses around the world are selling their services and products online like e-commerce, the purpose of this is to still show who they are right, because even if you have an offline business, people are going to google you, whether they want to know who you are, what's your story, how you're different, or they're just looking for the checkout and not check out contact information to reach out to you. they're going to do their due diligence by googling you, and so every business in the world has to have a marketing or a business website to tell their own story. so here are the design challenges when you have this kind of website- which, again, this is the most popular type of website out there- so you want to make sure that first, there's a very clear description and value proposition and presentation of the benefits of you know who they are, what they do, why would you use them, how are they different, right? so this is. this has to be very, very clear, and even though i'm putting this as a design challenge, because how you present this is a design challenge- a lot of this is how you write this, so copywriting is very, very important here, right? less so, a little bit less so maybe with ecommerce, where you can visually see the product, but here, this is about storytelling, right? so the next thing here is the story. you want to tell a different story. this even if they just came here to see who they are or find your- your phone number. you have an opportunity now to tell a story that would set you apart, that would create some kind of an emotional connection with your potential customer, create trust, and so you want to use this opportunity to design a story for them. now, the one more thing to create credibility is using social proof, and social proof means showing that other people have worked with you in the past, because we, as people, we have a bias. we think that if other people have already worked with you and done this thing in the past, it's probably more safe and secure, right? so if you show other people, i have worked with these clients, this is what my other clients are saying to me. this is using the psychology of social proof to make people believe that you are credible and more trustworthy and they're more likely to do business with you. all right, the last thing is, even if you are not selling things online, you still want to get people or use the opportunity of people visiting in your website to some kind of a call to action, and call to action is basically us as designers, telling them what to do, and that can be contact us. it could also be join our newsletter or download our freebie or something like this. but we can use the opportunity of people visiting our website to create some kind of a relationship or take the relationship with them to the next step, and we do this by using a call to action. let's check out this example. so this is a website of a pilates studio. this was designed by ardence webb and you can see here- first of all, it was very clear- this pilates. you can understand this by reading the headline or looking at you know the visuals, which are very, very clear, and note the focus here is about storytelling and we're here for 35 years. this is the social proof we toked about, so even
