00:00:00 00:00:03 so last week i got a pretty interesting
00:00:02 00:00:04 dm
00:00:03 00:00:06 it was actually a dm from justin
00:00:04 00:00:08 phillips justin is one of the
00:00:06 00:00:10 co-founders of a brand called support
00:00:08 00:00:11 black colleges support black colleges
00:00:10 00:00:13 for the past eight months we've been
00:00:11 00:00:16 doing bigger ever
00:00:13 00:00:19 to support historically black colleges
00:00:16 00:00:21 we love this this is a brand that's all
00:00:19 00:00:22 about supporting black education and
00:00:21 00:00:24 bringing awareness to the
00:00:22 00:00:26 amazing hbcus out there him and his team
00:00:24 00:00:28 have started a crazy movement they're
00:00:26 00:00:30 making millions of dollars a year with
00:00:28 00:00:32 this company they've gained
00:00:30 00:00:33 hundreds of thousands of followers and
00:00:32 00:00:34 they've collabed with countless
00:00:33 00:00:36 celebrities and even got their clothes
00:00:34 00:00:38 in nba 2k
00:00:36 00:00:39 so i decided to fly out to atlanta and
00:00:38 00:00:41 tok with justin to see how he built
00:00:39 00:00:42 this business and my flight's actually
00:00:41 00:00:45 leaving
00:00:42 00:00:45 soon so let's go
00:00:50 00:00:53 all right guys so we just got to atlanta
00:00:52 00:00:55 and now we're about to head over to
00:00:53 00:00:59 justin's warehouse and see how he runs
00:00:55 00:00:59 his business so let's go
00:01:02 00:01:06 all right guys we just got to the
00:01:04 00:01:08 support black college's warehouse or
00:01:06 00:01:09 this is my boy justin right here
00:01:08 00:01:11 i want you guys to meet this guy so
00:01:09 00:01:12 introduce yourself to the people yeah
00:01:11 00:01:14 i'm justin phillips one of the
00:01:12 00:01:16 co-founders of a business called support
00:01:14 00:01:16 black colleges and our main goal is to
00:01:16 00:01:19 inspire
00:01:16 00:01:21 uplift and raise awareness for our hbcus
00:01:19 00:01:22 and if you don't know what hbcu is it's
00:01:21 00:01:23 a historically black college or
00:01:22 00:01:25 university
00:01:23 00:01:27 so that's what we're all about here man
00:01:25 00:01:28 yeah this brand is doing extremely well
00:01:27 00:01:29 and today we're going to kind of break
00:01:28 00:01:31 down what they're doing and how he's
00:01:29 00:01:32 running this operation
00:01:31 00:01:35 so you guys can get some inspiration for
00:01:32 00:01:38 starting your own online business
00:01:39 00:01:42 all right bro so let me know a little
00:01:40 00:01:43 bit about how you got started with this
00:01:42 00:01:44 business because you've been running
00:01:43 00:01:46 this for how long
00:01:44 00:01:47 yeah we started in 2012. so a little a
00:01:46 00:01:49 little
00:01:47 00:01:51 while now yeah yeah you went to hbcu
00:01:49 00:01:52 yeah so i went to howard university and
00:01:51 00:01:54 actually i wasn't
00:01:52 00:01:56 a part of the original founding of the
00:01:54 00:01:57 business so my business partner and his
00:01:56 00:01:59 cousin they started it together
00:01:57 00:02:00 right i was just a friend i wanted to
00:01:59 00:02:02 help out i had a digital media
00:02:00 00:02:03 background and that was my thing so i
00:02:02 00:02:04 made them a twitter
00:02:03 00:02:06 instagram got him a few hundred
00:02:04 00:02:08 followers and then partikipated in the
00:02:06 00:02:09 first photo shoot and you know i just
00:02:08 00:02:10 kind of let them do their thing i did my
00:02:09 00:02:12 own thing
00:02:10 00:02:13 then a few years later my partner
00:02:12 00:02:15 currently his name is corey
00:02:13 00:02:16 he was like hey dude let's let's pick
00:02:15 00:02:18 this up let's take it seriously because
00:02:16 00:02:19 we kind of let it fall off yeah and then
00:02:18 00:02:21 i jumped into the business
00:02:19 00:02:22 brought the facebook instagram as google
00:02:21 00:02:23 youtube
00:02:22 00:02:24 and digital strategy and then that's
00:02:23 00:02:26 when we really started to take off about
00:02:24 00:02:27 two and a half years ago so where are
00:02:26 00:02:29 you guys at now i know you're doing
00:02:27 00:02:30 collaborations with nba
00:02:29 00:02:32 and all these celebrities tok to me
00:02:30 00:02:34 about this position you're in now yeah
00:02:32 00:02:35 now we're just fresh off the doing the
00:02:34 00:02:37 nba all-star game
00:02:35 00:02:39 so we had the opportunity to make all of
00:02:37 00:02:40 the gear for all of the all-stars so you
00:02:39 00:02:43 know lebron steph
00:02:40 00:02:44 giannis all of those guys and then i
00:02:43 00:02:47 mean i can't even
00:02:44 00:02:48 name any influencers that warned myself
00:02:47 00:02:51 you know
00:02:48 00:02:53 zion and missy elliott and chris paul
00:02:51 00:02:54 and rick ross like all of these people
00:02:53 00:02:55 so now you know we're just trying to
00:02:54 00:02:57 scale it up
00:02:55 00:02:59 yeah i know it takes a lot to run a
00:02:57 00:03:00 brand like this bro let's tok about
00:02:59 00:03:01 kind of a day-to-day of running this
00:03:00 00:03:03 business and maybe show me around the
00:03:01 00:03:04 warehouse on what you do yeah sure all
00:03:03 00:03:08 right let's do it all right
00:03:08 00:03:12 so first thing you do when you get to
00:03:10 00:03:14 the office each day oh man i sit down
00:03:12 00:03:16 check my to-do list check in with the
00:03:14 00:03:18 staff and then i just get to it bro
00:03:16 00:03:19 check out the on let's go jordan thank
00:03:18 00:03:21 you man
00:03:19 00:03:23 nice to meet you great operation you got
00:03:21 00:03:25 here bro thank you thank you
00:03:23 00:03:26 no thanks to him all right so now we're
00:03:25 00:03:28 in my office
00:03:26 00:03:30 and we can meet the team so we got my
00:03:28 00:03:32 boy tim he's the coldest in the game
00:03:30 00:03:33 with the camera he does all of our
00:03:32 00:03:34 creative direction all of our social
00:03:33 00:03:37 media content
00:03:34 00:03:39 he's that guy and then you got corey the
00:03:37 00:03:41 less attractive one of our collectors
00:03:39 00:03:42 and he's my business partner co-founder
00:03:41 00:03:44 of the business so that's my guy
00:03:42 00:03:45 next up after you do that what's the
00:03:44 00:03:47 next step what goes on out here yeah
00:03:45 00:03:49 i'll probably pull out my laptop
00:03:47 00:03:51 start designing some stuff check on our
00:03:49 00:03:53 inventory go check in with my blood
00:03:51 00:03:53 brother jason he's running a business
00:03:53 00:03:55 with us
00:03:53 00:03:57 and just kind of see how orders are
00:03:55 00:03:57 doing if we're shipping everything on
00:03:57 00:03:59 time
00:03:57 00:04:00 stuff like that yeah we gotta check out
00:03:59 00:04:02 the shipping operation over there we got
00:04:00 00:04:02 a ton of units so it gets serious over
00:04:02 00:04:06 there
00:04:06 00:04:09 this is the warehouse right oh yeah this
00:04:08 00:04:11 is where it is taught me through some of
00:04:09 00:04:11 this man how does it run how do you work
00:04:11 00:04:14 this
00:04:11 00:04:16 yeah so this is all of our inventory all
00:04:14 00:04:18 up against the wall you got small
00:04:16 00:04:21 medium large xl all the way up to 5x and
00:04:18 00:04:22 we use a program called finale inventory
00:04:21 00:04:22 to make sure we're tracking everything
00:04:22 00:04:24 properly
00:04:22 00:04:26 we use ship station to ship all the
00:04:24 00:04:29 orders but and this is everything right
00:04:26 00:04:30 here yeah
00:04:29 00:04:33 so with these hoodies how do you get
00:04:30 00:04:34 them made yeah so
00:04:33 00:04:36 right now we get the patches from
00:04:34 00:04:38 overseas and they're a chanel patch with
00:04:36 00:04:39 the adhesive backing
00:04:38 00:04:41 and then we heat press them onto the
00:04:39 00:04:43 hoodie and then we sew them down
00:04:41 00:04:45 just so they don't go anywhere but we
00:04:43 00:04:47 order the blanks either from
00:04:45 00:04:48 somewhere overseas as well or we usually
00:04:47 00:04:51 will do
00:04:48 00:04:52 a united states-based um inventory
00:04:51 00:04:54 supplier so yeah there's a ton of people
00:04:52 00:04:56 in my comments and my dms that want to
00:04:54 00:04:57 do clothing bro that's like one of the
00:04:56 00:04:59 number one things if you want to start
00:04:57 00:05:00 what's the number one tip for somebody
00:04:59 00:05:01 that wants to do clothing bro i know
00:05:00 00:05:02 it's a tough industry
00:05:01 00:05:04 yeah and that's tough i think the most
00:05:02 00:05:06 important part is just like figuring out
00:05:04 00:05:07 what type of person you are as an
00:05:06 00:05:09 entrepreneur because there's so many
00:05:07 00:05:09 different ways to make money in this
00:05:09 00:05:12 space
00:05:09 00:05:13 you can do high volume low tiket you
00:05:12 00:05:15 can do
00:05:13 00:05:16 you know exclusive drops you can do any
00:05:15 00:05:17 type of business so it really just
00:05:16 00:05:19 depends on
00:05:17 00:05:20 who you are as a person what type of
00:05:19 00:05:22 stress level you're willing to take and
00:05:20 00:05:24 what amount of time you're willing to
00:05:22 00:05:26 put and how much money you want to make
00:05:24 00:05:27 so depending on the answers to those
00:05:26 00:05:28 questions is going to tell you whether
00:05:27 00:05:31 you should do print on demand or
00:05:28 00:05:33 screen printers or drop shipping a bunch
00:05:31 00:05:35 of different things so i understand
00:05:33 00:05:36 understanding yourself and creating a
00:05:35 00:05:37 business that's in line with those
00:05:36 00:05:38 values exactly
00:05:37 00:05:41 that goes a long way hey man it's the
00:05:38 00:05:44 key yeah
00:05:45 00:05:48 all right bro so there's a lot of
00:05:47 00:05:50 entrepreneurs out there that are brand
00:05:48 00:05:50 new they're probably super motivated by
00:05:50 00:05:52 your story
00:05:50 00:05:54 tok them through the starting phases of
00:05:52 00:05:55 your journey though because
00:05:54 00:05:56 i know you weren't like this from the
00:05:55 00:05:57 start you had to come from somewhere
00:05:56 00:05:59 right
00:05:57 00:06:00 oh man yeah i like to attribute most of
00:05:59 00:06:02 it to my mom
00:06:00 00:06:05 i was raised in a single parent
00:06:02 00:06:06 household so my mom was grinding it out
00:06:05 00:06:08 she was um
00:06:06 00:06:11 doing i.t during the day and then she
00:06:08 00:06:12 was doing like bottle service at night
00:06:11 00:06:14 and then she was also a real estate
00:06:12 00:06:16 agent as well so seeing her kind of
00:06:14 00:06:17 grind and trying to put me through
00:06:16 00:06:18 school and all that stuff alone kind of
00:06:17 00:06:20 i guess gave me that
00:06:18 00:06:22 in your blood man it had to have been
00:06:20 00:06:23 because my um
00:06:22 00:06:25 she was started doing the real doing
00:06:23 00:06:27 real estate at her day job and then they
00:06:25 00:06:28 fired her because she was doing it on
00:06:27 00:06:30 the computers and whatnot
00:06:28 00:06:31 so then i would ask for things and she
00:06:30 00:06:33 would be like well you need to go make
00:06:31 00:06:35 you some money yeah
00:06:33 00:06:38 it so i'm from houston so i wanted a
00:06:35 00:06:40 grill like paul wall and like water
00:06:38 00:06:41 so i started selling candy as my first
00:06:40 00:06:42 business and then
00:06:41 00:06:44 two three days i made a couple hundred
00:06:42 00:06:46 dollars and then got my first grill
00:06:44 00:06:48 and then the third day they called me
00:06:46 00:06:50 into the office and was like
00:06:48 00:06:51 you can't do this and they poured all of
00:06:50 00:06:53 my candy out in the trash right in front
00:06:51 00:06:55 of my face so that was like
00:06:53 00:06:57 my first experience of rejection so then
00:06:55 00:06:58 you kind of you know grow up try
00:06:57 00:07:00 different things here and there try drop
00:06:58 00:07:02 shipping i wasn't very good at it
00:07:00 00:07:04 tried affiliate marketing just all these
00:07:02 00:07:05 other internet businesses but all those
00:07:04 00:07:07 failures just
00:07:05 00:07:09 gave me exposure to online marketing in
00:07:07 00:07:09 general and i used all of the knowledge
00:07:09 00:07:11 from
00:07:09 00:07:13 buying books and courses and stuff like
00:07:11 00:07:14 that to apply to this business when it
00:07:13 00:07:16 was that time
00:07:14 00:07:17 and um tok about that a little bit the
00:07:16 00:07:18 education process
00:07:17 00:07:20 because there's so much content out
00:07:18 00:07:22 there so much to consume
00:07:20 00:07:23 what did you put your attention on when
00:07:22 00:07:25 it comes to learning and really
00:07:23 00:07:27 educating yourself yeah so i started for
00:07:25 00:07:27 free like youtube like you know we call
00:07:27 00:07:30 it youtube
00:07:27 00:07:31 university i mean i graduate right here
00:07:30 00:07:35 oh yeah
00:07:31 00:07:36 bro the founder so i remember watching
00:07:35 00:07:38 some of your stuff back in the day
00:07:36 00:07:40 um watching a bunch of guys like king
00:07:38 00:07:44 kong brushing peace to him
00:07:40 00:07:46 um i actually just i really
00:07:44 00:07:48 started just consuming free content but
00:07:46 00:07:49 then i realized that there's so much
00:07:48 00:07:51 noise out there and there's so much
00:07:49 00:07:52 you know and i was just feeling myself
00:07:51 00:07:53 getting stuck with analysis paralysis
00:07:52 00:07:55 i'm like
00:07:53 00:07:57 i'm taking all this information lying to
00:07:55 00:07:58 myself saying that
00:07:57 00:08:00 i want to learn everything and get
00:07:58 00:08:01 perfect at it before i start but then i
00:08:00 00:08:03 realized one day that
00:08:01 00:08:05 if i don't just start today then guys
00:08:03 00:08:07 i'll never start it so
00:08:05 00:08:08 um to answer your question though i
00:08:07 00:08:10 started with
00:08:08 00:08:12 just vetting out one entrepreneur and it
00:08:10 00:08:13 happened to be king kong so i vetted him
00:08:12 00:08:15 out saw that he was doing something i
00:08:13 00:08:17 wanted to do and i invested in a hundred
00:08:15 00:08:18 dollar coaching call
00:08:17 00:08:20 toked to him told him about what i was
00:08:18 00:08:20 doing my ass he kind of gave me some
00:08:20 00:08:22 game
00:08:20 00:08:24 then after that i invested in a few
00:08:22 00:08:26 courses adrian morrison
00:08:24 00:08:28 og the game thousand dollar course tai
00:08:26 00:08:29 lopez thousand dollar course and this is
00:08:28 00:08:31 what all while
00:08:29 00:08:32 had a job so doing this stuff on the
00:08:31 00:08:34 side and um
00:08:32 00:08:36 just you know getting more exposure and
00:08:34 00:08:37 what i realized is that
00:08:36 00:08:39 i was getting exposure from these things
00:08:37 00:08:41 but that was key because it exposed me
00:08:39 00:08:41 to the online business like i toked
00:08:41 00:08:44 about so
00:08:41 00:08:45 even though i wasn't successful for my
00:08:44 00:08:47 own standards i realized that
00:08:45 00:08:49 i wasn't successful because i didn't
00:08:47 00:08:53 understand executing at a high level
00:08:49 00:08:55 so i knew the tactiks make a website
00:08:53 00:08:56 run ads but i wasn't because you weren't
00:08:55 00:08:58 taking action so you didn't really fully
00:08:56 00:08:59 understand what it took to get i just
00:08:58 00:09:01 had such a close
00:08:59 00:09:03 mindset like i bought a course for a
00:09:01 00:09:06 thousand dollars and then i said well
00:09:03 00:09:08 i'm gonna put 15 into the ads because i
00:09:06 00:09:09 just feel like it'll work i've
00:09:08 00:09:12 invested in this knowledge but that
00:09:09 00:09:14 wasn't the case so after the first 15
00:09:12 00:09:15 spin on my first ad campaign i said oh
00:09:14 00:09:17 this this business doesn't work
00:09:15 00:09:19 i just didn't have the capacity to even
00:09:17 00:09:20 think that's correct that's really one
00:09:19 00:09:21 of the biggest issues i see with people
00:09:20 00:09:23 nowadays you know it's like they're
00:09:21 00:09:25 scared to invest in themselves
00:09:23 00:09:26 when it comes to starting a business
00:09:25 00:09:27 especially when it comes to online
00:09:26 00:09:29 business because it's like
00:09:27 00:09:30 it costs money to start it's not
00:09:29 00:09:31 something that you could just start with
00:09:30 00:09:33 100 bucks you know so
00:09:31 00:09:34 i think when they see your story and
00:09:33 00:09:36 they see how you stay down and i mean
00:09:34 00:09:37 you didn't start with a lot of money
00:09:36 00:09:38 right no
00:09:37 00:09:40 you you kept putting everything you had
00:09:38 00:09:41 into building this right yeah so i
00:09:40 00:09:43 actually had a job
00:09:41 00:09:45 i've only ever had two jobs in my life
00:09:43 00:09:46 the first one i don't even remember i
00:09:45 00:09:48 probably got fired they would tell me
00:09:46 00:09:51 sweep the place they would shoot
00:09:48 00:09:53 carnival and i would sweep from nine a.m
00:09:51 00:09:55 to five pm doing one job like that was
00:09:53 00:09:57 it robot and they were just like
00:09:55 00:09:58 you know just i was just a terrible
00:09:57 00:10:02 employee then i had another job
00:09:58 00:10:03 and after that i quit and um you know i
00:10:02 00:10:05 just took those experiences and
00:10:03 00:10:07 invested in myself using that money and
00:10:05 00:10:08 then i had enough money to save up i had
00:10:07 00:10:09 ten thousand dollars and moved to
00:10:08 00:10:11 atlanta
00:10:09 00:10:13 um and then i just invested two thousand
00:10:11 00:10:14 dollars into this business and i had two
00:10:13 00:10:16 pennies left in my bank account after
00:10:14 00:10:17 that but i didn't tell corey i didn't
00:10:16 00:10:18 tell anybody
00:10:17 00:10:19 and immediately after i did that i
00:10:18 00:10:21 didn't know how i was going to eat
00:10:19 00:10:22 didn't know how i was going to pay rent
00:10:21 00:10:24 like all of that stuff
00:10:22 00:10:25 but then you know just build resilience
00:10:24 00:10:27 and character
00:10:25 00:10:29 and then we started making good money
00:10:27 00:10:30 after the first first one or two months
00:10:29 00:10:32 and then
00:10:30 00:10:34 after that it was like all right so
00:10:32 00:10:35 really pushing yourself to the brain
00:10:34 00:10:37 is what got you to that first big
00:10:35 00:10:39 successful right bro
00:10:37 00:10:40 yeah bro yeah it was really just betting
00:10:39 00:10:41 on myself and knowing betting on
00:10:40 00:10:44 yourself
00:10:41 00:10:46 you know knowing that hey i didn't get
00:10:44 00:10:48 brought this far to get left here so
00:10:46 00:10:49 you know let's go all in and if it if it
00:10:48 00:10:52 doesn't work out i've been broke before
00:10:49 00:10:53 so yeah it's what it is that's extremely
00:10:52 00:10:55 powerful stuff and i think a lot of you
00:10:53 00:10:56 guys out there on the fence about
00:10:55 00:10:58 going in on your dreams going under your
00:10:56 00:10:59 goals but it's worth it
00:10:58 00:11:01 i'm a testament to that justin's a
00:10:59 00:11:02 testament to that and there's a hundred
00:11:01 00:11:03 thousand of the people i can think of
00:11:02 00:11:05 that are as well so
00:11:03 00:11:07 if you're feeling about it if you're
00:11:05 00:11:15 giving a second thought just go in on it
00:11:07 00:11:15 just take that
00:11:18 00:11:22 all right bro so the brand's doing well
00:11:20 00:11:24 now but what's next what's the focus
00:11:22 00:11:26 man i think that we're going to focus on
00:11:24 00:11:27 just scaling up a lot more partnerships
00:11:26 00:11:29 we've been
00:11:27 00:11:30 lucky enough to partner with like the
00:11:29 00:11:32 mba and google
00:11:30 00:11:34 and shopify and a bunch of different
00:11:32 00:11:36 companies but now we're looking to
00:11:34 00:11:38 just scale up and expand get into some
00:11:36 00:11:39 wholesale and then also
00:11:38 00:11:41 we're gonna start dropping some content
00:11:39 00:11:42 too yeah we're gonna take some notes out
00:11:41 00:11:44 of your book
00:11:42 00:11:46 drop some youtube content and then we're
00:11:44 00:11:47 also educating people as well so
00:11:46 00:11:49 books courses things like that as well
00:11:47 00:11:50 that's amazing so from supporting black
00:11:49 00:11:51 college just
00:11:50 00:11:53 creating your own youtube university
00:11:51 00:11:55 come on i haven't got to
00:11:53 00:11:57 love to see it bro thanks for showing us
