00:00:00 | 00:00:04 | - If you're gonna tok to the camera for a long time, |
00:00:04 | 00:00:05 | don't just sit down in one spot |
00:00:05 | 00:00:07 | and tok to the camera forever. |
00:00:07 | 00:00:10 | Try using different locations |
00:00:10 | 00:00:12 | 'cause that refocuses people's attention. |
00:00:14 | 00:00:17 | - Today, I'm very excited to be joined by Drea Okeke. |
00:00:17 | 00:00:21 | If you don't know Is, she's a short form Content Strategy |
00:00:21 | 00:00:23 | and she's the founder of Drea Knows Best |
00:00:23 | 00:00:26 | and she's host of the, Do It 4 The Content podcast. |
00:00:26 | 00:00:29 | Her course is Level Up TikTok. |
00:00:29 | 00:00:31 | Drea welcome to show, how are you doing today? |
00:00:31 | 00:00:33 | - Hi Mike, I'm doing great. |
00:00:33 | 00:00:34 | How are you doing? |
00:00:34 | 00:00:36 | - I'm doing awesome. |
00:00:36 | 00:00:39 | And I'm really excited to tok to you today about how |
00:00:39 | 00:00:42 | to get more engagement on your TikTok videos. |
00:00:42 | 00:00:45 | But before we go there, I wanna hear your story. |
00:00:45 | 00:00:47 | How in the world did you get into TikTok? |
00:00:47 | 00:00:49 | 'Cause I know I heard a little bit of it. |
00:00:49 | 00:00:51 | It's an absolute fascinating story. |
00:00:51 | 00:00:53 | So start wherever you wanna start. |
00:00:53 | 00:00:54 | - Of course, of course. |
00:00:54 | 00:00:56 | First of all, thank you for having me here. |
00:00:56 | 00:00:57 | I am honored to be here |
00:00:57 | 00:01:01 | and tok to your audience, very excited. |
00:01:01 | 00:01:04 | My backstory about me, how I got started on like TikTok |
00:01:04 | 00:01:05 | and social media in general. |
00:01:05 | 00:01:08 | So I started off posting videos on Vine, |
00:01:08 | 00:01:10 | which was a six second video app |
00:01:10 | 00:01:12 | and of course short form content. |
00:01:12 | 00:01:13 | And I started doing that |
00:01:13 | 00:01:16 | while I was in college studying engineering. |
00:01:16 | 00:01:19 | So my whole switch was from like the engineering life to- |
00:01:19 | 00:01:20 | - Vine was hot, right? |
00:01:20 | 00:01:23 | I mean, aren't you so sad that they shut down Vine? |
00:01:23 | 00:01:25 | I mean like that was the coolest thing. |
00:01:25 | 00:01:27 | - Honestly, I'm so sad, but you know, |
00:01:27 | 00:01:30 | sometimes sacrifices has to be made |
00:01:30 | 00:01:32 | for something bigger to come. |
00:01:33 | 00:01:35 | - There you go. - Yeah. |
00:01:35 | 00:01:36 | - So you were an engineer in college, |
00:01:36 | 00:01:38 | you were saying and you were messing around with Vine. |
00:01:38 | 00:01:39 | - Yes, so I was messing around with Vine, |
00:01:39 | 00:01:42 | just like as a stress reliever and I continued doing that |
00:01:42 | 00:01:45 | even when like all my parents were like moving to LA |
00:01:45 | 00:01:47 | to pursue social media full time. |
00:01:47 | 00:01:50 | I was like, okay, I have strict Nigerian parents. |
00:01:50 | 00:01:52 | There's no way they're gonna let me quit my engineering job |
00:01:52 | 00:01:56 | and moved like straight to LA so I was strategic with it. |
00:01:56 | 00:01:58 | I got an engineering job in Cali |
00:01:58 | 00:02:01 | and as I was doing that engineering full time job, |
00:02:01 | 00:02:03 | I was also creating content. |
00:02:03 | 00:02:05 | And then after my two year time was up |
00:02:05 | 00:02:08 | because they gave me like a free relocation |
00:02:08 | 00:02:11 | to remove from New York to LA. |
00:02:11 | 00:02:12 | And I didn't have to return back the money |
00:02:12 | 00:02:15 | if I stayed with stayed working there for two years. |
00:02:15 | 00:02:16 | So I stayed working there for two years. |
00:02:16 | 00:02:19 | Then I decided to go to grad school at USC, |
00:02:19 | 00:02:20 | like, treated like as a company. |
00:02:20 | 00:02:23 | And that's what I just started to do for Drea Knows Best. |
00:02:23 | 00:02:26 | And as I was doing that, I started accumulating |
00:02:26 | 00:02:31 | more brands like Netflix, Amazon, Kate Spade, |
00:02:31 | 00:02:33 | the list goes on, started reaching out to me |
00:02:33 | 00:02:35 | to create content for their brands. |
00:02:35 | 00:02:36 | I got- |
00:02:36 | 00:02:41 | - Real quick, were you still on Vine at this point? |
00:02:41 | 00:02:42 | Or were you creating- - TikTok. |
00:02:42 | 00:02:45 | - Okay, so tell us a little bit about |
00:02:45 | 00:02:48 | how that transition to TikTok happened as well. |
00:02:48 | 00:02:51 | - Yeah, so when Vine got discontinued, I was like, |
00:02:51 | 00:02:54 | where can I go to continue create? |
00:02:54 | 00:02:57 | 'Cause a lot of my content has to do with either me |
00:02:57 | 00:02:59 | doing my character, my Nigerian mom character, |
00:02:59 | 00:03:01 | doing comedy skis that are relatable |
00:03:01 | 00:03:03 | to like people of immigrant parents |
00:03:03 | 00:03:08 | or videos amplifying my Nigerian culture. |
00:03:08 | 00:03:10 | So that's where most of my content fit. |
00:03:10 | 00:03:13 | But the thing is that when Vine got discontinued, |
00:03:13 | 00:03:15 | I was like, okay, where can I go |
00:03:15 | 00:03:18 | that I can create short form videos 'cause again, |
00:03:18 | 00:03:21 | I like the short sweet get to the punchline quickly. |
00:03:21 | 00:03:24 | And then I realized TikTok, okay. |
00:03:24 | 00:03:25 | TikTok at that point was only 15 seconds |
00:03:25 | 00:03:26 | and I was like beautiful. |
00:03:26 | 00:03:28 | Some people were like, that's challenging, |
00:03:28 | 00:03:30 | for me, I'm like, that is a sweet spot for me. |
00:03:30 | 00:03:32 | So I was one of the original people |
00:03:32 | 00:03:34 | who were creating original comedy skits |
00:03:34 | 00:03:36 | and there weren't that many female comedians on there. |
00:03:36 | 00:03:39 | So my page was growing- |
00:03:39 | 00:03:40 | - When was that by the way? |
00:03:40 | 00:03:41 | What year was that approximately? |
00:03:41 | 00:03:44 | - This was around 2018. - Okay. |
00:03:44 | 00:03:46 | - 2018, yeah, so this is when I first started, |
00:03:46 | 00:03:49 | when I started grad school, so 2018, 2019. |
00:03:49 | 00:03:50 | That's when my TikTok, I was like, |
00:03:50 | 00:03:53 | I remember I posted one comedy skit and it got like |
00:03:53 | 00:03:57 | immediately like almost half a million views. |
00:03:57 | 00:03:59 | And then, oh, one of the things that I posted |
00:03:59 | 00:04:00 | was at the accent challenge. |
00:04:00 | 00:04:02 | Accent challenge was one of the videos that blew me up |
00:04:02 | 00:04:05 | because it was me doing my Nigerian accents, you know, |
00:04:05 | 00:04:07 | saying things in Nigerian world, Nigerians ways |
00:04:07 | 00:04:09 | and then I had a friend maybe from Australia |
00:04:09 | 00:04:13 | or wherever country she is say things in her accent |
00:04:13 | 00:04:14 | and then we'll compare |
00:04:14 | 00:04:16 | how different countries pronounce things differently. |
00:04:16 | 00:04:19 | And TikTok is such a global platform, |
00:04:19 | 00:04:22 | that my video went viral in |
00:04:22 | 00:04:24 | not only in like Nigeria, went viral in Australia, |
00:04:24 | 00:04:26 | went viral in places in Asia, |
00:04:26 | 00:04:29 | went viral in places in UK and all over the world. |
00:04:29 | 00:04:33 | And I was like, okay, you are a global icon now Drea, |
00:04:33 | 00:04:34 | it's time to take this seriously |
00:04:34 | 00:04:38 | 'cause these metrics are insane, you know. |
00:04:38 | 00:04:40 | So that's how I started. |
00:04:40 | 00:04:42 | And I always tell people like the two things |
00:04:42 | 00:04:45 | that I was bullied for growing up was my height |
00:04:45 | 00:04:47 | 'cause I'm extremely tall, |
00:04:47 | 00:04:49 | I'm over six feet tall female, |
00:04:49 | 00:04:53 | taller than all the guys I crushed on growing up. |
00:04:53 | 00:04:55 | And I had an accent growing up too, |
00:04:55 | 00:04:56 | but I was bullied for my accent, |
00:04:56 | 00:04:57 | I was bullied from a height, |
00:04:57 | 00:04:59 | but those two things are what's making me thrive |
00:04:59 | 00:05:01 | on social media on TikTok especially |
00:05:01 | 00:05:06 | because I'm literally just embracing what's society |
00:05:06 | 00:05:09 | was say in perfections and making it in my perfection. |
00:05:09 | 00:05:13 | And that's where I really found my authentik space on TikTok |
00:05:13 | 00:05:14 | to win there. |
00:05:14 | 00:05:17 | - Very cool, I love that story. |
00:05:17 | 00:05:19 | So tell us a little bit about what you're doing now |
00:05:19 | 00:05:21 | because obviously you've started a podcast |
00:05:21 | 00:05:23 | and you've got a course, |
00:05:23 | 00:05:25 | so kind of bring us up a little bit to the present |
00:05:25 | 00:05:26 | and how that all came about |
00:05:26 | 00:05:31 | because obviously you're creating funny, relatable content |
00:05:31 | 00:05:33 | on TikTok that a lot of people |
00:05:33 | 00:05:35 | from various different cultures can relate to. |
00:05:35 | 00:05:37 | Somehow that must have connected |
00:05:37 | 00:05:39 | with your master's degree, right, |
00:05:39 | 00:05:41 | and your entrepreneurial itch. |
00:05:41 | 00:05:43 | So tell us a little bit about that. |
00:05:43 | 00:05:47 | - Yes, 'cause again, like I told you, this is a business. |
00:05:47 | 00:05:50 | The same way how Vine went away, |
00:05:50 | 00:05:51 | TikTok any of these platforms |
00:05:51 | 00:05:53 | that we are on social media can go away. |
00:05:53 | 00:05:56 | So as an entrepreneur, you have to diversify your income. |
00:05:56 | 00:05:58 | And for me, I'm a applicant for creators. |
00:05:58 | 00:06:00 | I believe that if I can do it, |
00:06:00 | 00:06:04 | a girl with immigrant parents, an outcast can do it |
00:06:04 | 00:06:06 | can have so much success online. |
00:06:06 | 00:06:08 | I believe honestly, anyone can do it |
00:06:08 | 00:06:09 | as long as they're following the right strategies |
00:06:09 | 00:06:11 | and being authentik self online. |
00:06:11 | 00:06:14 | So I decided like all my friends always coming to me, |
00:06:14 | 00:06:15 | everyone online is always asking me, |
00:06:15 | 00:06:17 | how do you grow on TikTok? How do you grow on TikTok? |
00:06:17 | 00:06:20 | So I decided it is time for me to launch a TikTok course, |
00:06:20 | 00:06:24 | given everyone A to Z on how I did it and how they can do it |
00:06:24 | 00:06:27 | from the tips and best practikes, |
00:06:27 | 00:06:30 | how to discover trends, how to create an engaging video, |
00:06:30 | 00:06:32 | I put that all in the course and decided to like, |
00:06:32 | 00:06:35 | let that be up there and be selling for itself, |
00:06:35 | 00:06:37 | but also help people 'cause that's the biggest thing. |
00:06:37 | 00:06:41 | Like I feel like there's space for everyone online. |
00:06:41 | 00:06:42 | Social media is huge. |
00:06:42 | 00:06:44 | So we shouldn't be gate keeping this knowledge. |
00:06:44 | 00:06:47 | Not only did I do the Level Up with TikTok course, |
00:06:47 | 00:06:49 | I also had to Do It 4 The Content podcast |
00:06:49 | 00:06:51 | where I get people tips and strategies |
00:06:51 | 00:06:53 | that I honestly wish I knew when I first started |
00:06:53 | 00:06:56 | because this social media game is insane. |
00:06:56 | 00:06:58 | But if you have enough guidance, |
00:06:58 | 00:06:59 | you can definitely win on it. |
00:06:59 | 00:07:02 | So I mean, the course has been amazing. |
00:07:02 | 00:07:04 | I recently like someone reached out to me |
00:07:04 | 00:07:06 | and was telling me that they gained 8,000 TikTok followers |
00:07:06 | 00:07:09 | in a day after using my tips and strategies that I gave. |
00:07:09 | 00:07:11 | And I'm like, yes, that is what I love to hear, |
00:07:11 | 00:07:14 | I love to see people win, you know. |
00:07:14 | 00:07:18 | - Very cool, okay, so there are a lot of people listening |
00:07:18 | 00:07:20 | and watching right now |
00:07:20 | 00:07:22 | that are part of the social media examiner community |
00:07:22 | 00:07:25 | that are very much focused on Instagram |
00:07:25 | 00:07:28 | and have been watching what's been going on with TikTok |
00:07:28 | 00:07:31 | but might be a little skeptikal |
00:07:31 | 00:07:32 | or maybe they're over on YouTube |
00:07:32 | 00:07:33 | and they're super active on YouTube, |
00:07:33 | 00:07:37 | but they're not so sure about, excuse me, TikTok. |
00:07:37 | 00:07:39 | So what do you wanna say to marketers or creators |
00:07:39 | 00:07:42 | who have not yet embraced TikTok? What are they missing? |
00:07:42 | 00:07:44 | I know you're active on a lot of different platforms, |
00:07:44 | 00:07:46 | so you can understand where they're coming from, right? |
00:07:47 | 00:07:50 | - I think they're missing out on a chance |
00:07:50 | 00:07:55 | to really start again and start fresh without pressure. |
00:07:55 | 00:07:56 | Because TikTok is a platform where people |
00:07:56 | 00:07:59 | are again winning by being themselves. |
00:07:59 | 00:08:01 | You find what topic you're passionate about |
00:08:01 | 00:08:03 | and tok about it and share it. |
00:08:03 | 00:08:04 | And I don't know if you remember |
00:08:04 | 00:08:06 | during the time of the YouTube stage |
00:08:06 | 00:08:08 | when people were just getting on YouTube |
00:08:08 | 00:08:11 | and gaining millions of followers, getting fame, |
00:08:11 | 00:08:12 | growing their business, |
00:08:12 | 00:08:14 | this is the wave that's happening right now |
00:08:14 | 00:08:16 | on TikTok as a creator. |
00:08:16 | 00:08:18 | Is like, if you're not on TikTok, you might miss out |
00:08:18 | 00:08:22 | on this bad wagon to one grow a huge new community |
00:08:22 | 00:08:25 | that just cares about you because of who you are |
00:08:25 | 00:08:28 | to be able to take off that pressure of being so perfect. |
00:08:28 | 00:08:30 | 'Cause I really truly believe that |
00:08:32 | 00:08:35 | imperfection is perfection, especially on TikTok. |
00:08:35 | 00:08:36 | They don't want that perfect way. |
00:08:36 | 00:08:38 | So as a creator, you get to try out new categories |
00:08:38 | 00:08:42 | that you would've usually create, post videos about. |
00:08:42 | 00:08:44 | And as a brand, as a business, as a marketer, |
00:08:46 | 00:08:48 | I was at Sephora the other day |
00:08:48 | 00:08:50 | and I was hearing this girl saying, |
00:08:51 | 00:08:52 | I saw this on TikTok, |
00:08:52 | 00:08:54 | so I'm gonna definitely I'm buying it right now. |
00:08:54 | 00:08:57 | And even I saw this girl, |
00:08:57 | 00:08:59 | a comedian that I actually watched in LA. |
00:08:59 | 00:09:02 | She posted that her one of her video went viral. |
00:09:02 | 00:09:06 | She posted a 20 second clip of her standup comedy special, |
00:09:06 | 00:09:08 | 20 seconds and it went viral. |
00:09:08 | 00:09:11 | It had like, I think almost a million views. |
00:09:11 | 00:09:13 | And she sold out on her two locations |
00:09:13 | 00:09:15 | that she's having a standup comedy at. |
00:09:15 | 00:09:18 | So there's potential because of people are going to TikTok |
00:09:18 | 00:09:21 | in the hub to like search up things, search up recipes, |
00:09:21 | 00:09:25 | search up health facts, search up fashion tips |
00:09:25 | 00:09:28 | that as a brand you can utilize the SEO on it |
00:09:28 | 00:09:29 | and post your content on there. |
00:09:29 | 00:09:32 | And then people can find out about your business |
00:09:32 | 00:09:34 | without even like pushing so hard and trying so hard, |
00:09:34 | 00:09:36 | like other platforms. |
00:09:36 | 00:09:39 | So I think that's definitely a big avenue. |
00:09:39 | 00:09:42 | - Excellent, so what do we need to know |
00:09:42 | 00:09:46 | before we start making videos on TikTok? |
00:09:46 | 00:09:49 | Because clearly you've been doing short form video |
00:09:49 | 00:09:51 | for a long time, you started with Vine |
00:09:51 | 00:09:52 | then you went over to TikTok |
00:09:52 | 00:09:54 | and it sounds like you've done hundreds, |
00:09:54 | 00:09:55 | maybe even thousands of videos. |
00:09:55 | 00:09:59 | So you understand things that plus your course, |
00:09:59 | 00:10:01 | of course you understand some of the things |
00:10:01 | 00:10:03 | that maybe not everybody else understands |
00:10:03 | 00:10:07 | about what makes maybe TikTok tik, if you will- |
00:10:07 | 00:10:09 | - (chuckles) I like that. |
00:10:09 | 00:10:10 | - So what do we need to know? |
00:10:10 | 00:10:14 | What do we need to know before we start even making videos? |
00:10:14 | 00:10:17 | - I think the biggest thing you need to know |
00:10:17 | 00:10:20 | is know who you're toking to. |
00:10:20 | 00:10:22 | If you can even know your niche. |
00:10:22 | 00:10:23 | And I tok about this in my course, |
00:10:23 | 00:10:26 | I do an exercise to help you really figure out your niche |
00:10:26 | 00:10:31 | because you can say your niche is fitness, |
00:10:31 | 00:10:31 | but that's not really a niche. |
00:10:31 | 00:10:33 | 'Cause that's just like an overall category. |
00:10:33 | 00:10:37 | But if you're doing your niche is fitness for new moms, |
00:10:37 | 00:10:38 | that's like very specific. |
00:10:38 | 00:10:41 | And you know every time when people are coming to your page, |
00:10:41 | 00:10:43 | they're coming for those tips for fitness, that I'm a mom, |
00:10:43 | 00:10:46 | I need fitness tips Drea is gonna give that right? |
00:10:46 | 00:10:48 | So that's the first thing, know who your audience is. |
00:10:48 | 00:10:50 | And when you discover what your niche |
00:10:50 | 00:10:52 | or what you want your niche to be, |
00:10:52 | 00:10:56 | go on TikTok and really just watch a bunch of videos. |
00:10:56 | 00:10:58 | I'm all about study the grades and become greater. |
00:10:58 | 00:11:00 | Like don't overdo it, watch a bunch of videos. |
00:11:00 | 00:11:02 | Look at these people within your niche, |
00:11:02 | 00:11:04 | type in for example, let's do that same example, |
00:11:04 | 00:11:06 | fitness for new moms. |
00:11:06 | 00:11:09 | You look at all the videos that people are posting. |
00:11:09 | 00:11:11 | You see one influencer, she post, |
00:11:11 | 00:11:13 | five steps for workouts. |
00:11:13 | 00:11:14 | You see another influencer posting |
00:11:14 | 00:11:16 | a vlog for new mom workouts. |
00:11:17 | 00:11:19 | You look at the strategy, the formats people |
00:11:19 | 00:11:20 | are posting, the hooks they're using, |
00:11:20 | 00:11:21 | the way to edit their videos, |
00:11:21 | 00:11:23 | the way they tok to the audience. |
00:11:23 | 00:11:26 | And then take from it, take what you want, |
00:11:26 | 00:11:28 | leave the nonsense that you don't want. |
00:11:28 | 00:11:31 | And then you're ready to like adapt that into your video. |
00:11:32 | 00:11:34 | - Let's tok about mindset a little bit, |
00:11:34 | 00:11:37 | 'cause I know you care a lot about this. |
00:11:37 | 00:11:40 | What do we need to do in our thinking |
00:11:40 | 00:11:42 | before we even start creating content? |
00:11:43 | 00:11:46 | - Man, I think the biggest thing is stop overthinking, |
00:11:46 | 00:11:48 | less overthinking, more posting. |
00:11:48 | 00:11:50 | 'Cause I think the mindset we have |
00:11:50 | 00:11:53 | is we really want to like craft our videos to be so perfect. |
00:11:53 | 00:11:56 | We wanted to make sure like, we said the right thing. |
00:11:56 | 00:11:58 | If our hair is not on spot, |
00:11:58 | 00:12:01 | we want to know, go reshoot, our makeup, redo this. |
00:12:01 | 00:12:05 | And it's like, no, the mindset is like, you have a passion. |
00:12:05 | 00:12:06 | You're passionate about this topic |
00:12:06 | 00:12:08 | you wanna tok about online. |
00:12:08 | 00:12:11 | And you know, like if you are passionate about it, |
00:12:11 | 00:12:13 | more than likely someone else out there, |
00:12:13 | 00:12:14 | thousands of people are gonna be passionate about it. |
00:12:14 | 00:12:16 | So you just have to have that confidence. |
00:12:16 | 00:12:17 | I think that's just number one thing |
00:12:17 | 00:12:19 | that starts off with posting. |
00:12:19 | 00:12:21 | Try to have that confidence in yourself. |
00:12:22 | 00:12:24 | There's this quote that is like, |
00:12:24 | 00:12:25 | there's always someone else |
00:12:25 | 00:12:28 | that's doing something that you wanna do |
00:12:28 | 00:12:29 | that's less qualified than you are. |
00:12:29 | 00:12:30 | - Oh, I like that. |
00:12:31 | 00:12:32 | - Right, it's not quote, but you know, hey, |
00:12:32 | 00:12:34 | you gotta say, it's my cool, it's no problem. |
00:12:34 | 00:12:37 | But yeah, but like it's always so less qualified than you're |
00:12:37 | 00:12:38 | like I could do this. |
00:12:38 | 00:12:40 | So that's the mindset you gotta have. |
00:12:40 | 00:12:44 | You gotta go in listen, this is my time I'm gonna post it. |
00:12:45 | 00:12:48 | I'm not gonna overthink it, get on my drafts, post, |
00:12:48 | 00:12:50 | don't leave it in your drafts posted. |
00:12:50 | 00:12:53 | And that's like the first step to it, I would say. |
00:12:54 | 00:12:56 | - Are there certain kind of defeatist mindsets |
00:12:56 | 00:12:57 | that can get in the way? |
00:12:57 | 00:12:59 | I mean like, I'm sure you've had people |
00:12:59 | 00:13:00 | that take your course and people that interact with you. |
00:13:00 | 00:13:04 | Like how do we even know if our thinking is off? |
00:13:04 | 00:13:07 | Like what are some of the signals that might prevent us |
00:13:07 | 00:13:11 | from making these videos in the first place? |
00:13:11 | 00:13:15 | - I feel like imposter syndrome is number one |
00:13:15 | 00:13:19 | feeling like you're not qualified when you actually are, |
00:13:19 | 00:13:20 | that's number one thing. |
00:13:20 | 00:13:21 | I mean, I go through it too. |
00:13:21 | 00:13:22 | Sometimes I even doubt myself. |
00:13:22 | 00:13:25 | I'm like, wait, I might actually qualified enough |
00:13:25 | 00:13:28 | to be like posting this type of content. |
00:13:28 | 00:13:30 | But it's like, no you are. |
00:13:30 | 00:13:32 | And even if you're not, who knows, |
00:13:32 | 00:13:33 | who's gonna check you, who cares? |
00:13:33 | 00:13:36 | So that's definitely like feeling like an outsider |
00:13:36 | 00:13:38 | when you are meant to do this, |
00:13:38 | 00:13:40 | especially if you've been trying your hardest |
00:13:40 | 00:13:43 | and going at it to be a creator, |
00:13:43 | 00:13:46 | I feel like especially now with such, |
00:13:46 | 00:13:49 | I'm an advocate of this like authentikity, |
00:13:49 | 00:13:52 | just like winning by being yourself is so, not, |
00:13:52 | 00:13:53 | I don't wanna say so in, |
00:13:53 | 00:13:56 | but it really is the time right now to just be like effort. |
00:13:56 | 00:13:57 | Let me put it out there |
00:13:57 | 00:13:59 | because if you don't put it out there then |
00:13:59 | 00:14:01 | you're just gonna be sitting down to your house |
00:14:01 | 00:14:04 | thinking what happened if I, when I posted that video, |
00:14:04 | 00:14:05 | my life will be different now |
00:14:05 | 00:14:07 | or like my business will be different now. |
00:14:07 | 00:14:09 | So the imposter syndrome is real |
00:14:09 | 00:14:11 | and we have to get out of it, that's- |
00:14:11 | 00:14:13 | - You know, I'm glad you brought this up. |
00:14:13 | 00:14:14 | 'Cause imposter syndrome is something |
00:14:14 | 00:14:15 | that everybody deals with. |
00:14:15 | 00:14:18 | I have done thousands of interviews |
00:14:18 | 00:14:22 | and I still sometimes ask myself times, |
00:14:22 | 00:14:23 | why would anybody listen to me? |
00:14:23 | 00:14:25 | Even though it's ridiculous, you know what I mean? |
00:14:25 | 00:14:27 | Like I've got so many people that love this show. |
00:14:27 | 00:14:29 | And so many messages I get from people. |
00:14:29 | 00:14:33 | And I still think to myself, I'm not qualified. |
00:14:33 | 00:14:34 | I don't understand enough about this, |
00:14:34 | 00:14:36 | which is completely ridiculous, right? |
00:14:36 | 00:14:37 | This is human nature. |
00:14:37 | 00:14:40 | I have found that if you're feeling that, |
00:14:40 | 00:14:42 | that is like a green light, that's like a signal, |
00:14:42 | 00:14:44 | 'cause that means you're human, right. |
00:14:44 | 00:14:46 | It means you should proceed. |
00:14:46 | 00:14:47 | Because you said it, |
00:14:47 | 00:14:50 | someone who's less qualified is going to do it. |
00:14:50 | 00:14:54 | And why don't you at least give it a try? |
00:14:54 | 00:14:56 | I would imagine some of the other thoughts |
00:14:56 | 00:14:58 | going through people's heads are people are gonna judge me, |
00:14:58 | 00:14:59 | tok a little bit about that. |
00:15:01 | 00:15:05 | - The judging thing, I would say, yes, |
00:15:05 | 00:15:06 | people are gonna judge you, |
00:15:06 | 00:15:08 | but people are gonna judge you regardless. |
00:15:08 | 00:15:09 | Even if you don't do anything, |
00:15:09 | 00:15:11 | if you do something they're gonna judge you, |
00:15:11 | 00:15:12 | they're gonna feel like, |
00:15:12 | 00:15:14 | and it's not gonna be in a judging way |
00:15:14 | 00:15:16 | sometimes it's even envious. |
00:15:16 | 00:15:18 | It's like, those same people that's gonna judge you |
00:15:18 | 00:15:20 | when you're initially posting that video |
00:15:20 | 00:15:21 | and is only getting one view or one like, |
00:15:21 | 00:15:24 | which is probably just your mom and your uncle liking it. |
00:15:24 | 00:15:26 | Those are the same people that are gonna come after you |
00:15:26 | 00:15:29 | when you're finally like a big star |
00:15:29 | 00:15:31 | or your business is booming are the same people |
00:15:31 | 00:15:33 | that's gonna come to you ask you for advice. |
00:15:33 | 00:15:34 | Do you know how many people that, |
00:15:34 | 00:15:36 | I started this while I was in college, |
00:15:36 | 00:15:39 | and so many people were laughing at me, |
00:15:39 | 00:15:42 | initially in 2018, when TikTok was taken off, |
00:15:42 | 00:15:44 | I was given presentations in my grad school. |
00:15:44 | 00:15:46 | Like, listen, this is why I need to be on TikTok. |
00:15:46 | 00:15:48 | This is the next wave, this and that. |
00:15:48 | 00:15:49 | So many people, now I'm just saying my, |
00:15:49 | 00:15:51 | but lot of people are just like, |
00:15:51 | 00:15:53 | all right, Drea, shut up, whatever. |
00:15:53 | 00:15:56 | Now there's the same people in my DMs asking me questions. |
00:15:56 | 00:15:58 | These are the same people buying my course, |
00:15:58 | 00:15:59 | these are the same people giving me testimonials |
00:15:59 | 00:16:02 | of how my course has helped them grow. |
00:16:02 | 00:16:04 | So everyone is gonna judge, |
00:16:04 | 00:16:07 | we're judgmental by nature as humans. |
00:16:07 | 00:16:09 | But the truth is that those same people |
00:16:09 | 00:16:10 | that judge you is gonna be the same people |
00:16:10 | 00:16:13 | that's gonna come back around and ask you for advice. |
00:16:13 | 00:16:14 | And also comparisons them too, |
00:16:14 | 00:16:17 | that's another limiting factor too that people go through. |
00:16:17 | 00:16:19 | The spirit of comparison, |
00:16:19 | 00:16:21 | I know I go through that too sometimes and I have to go |
00:16:21 | 00:16:24 | through different strategies on social media. |
00:16:24 | 00:16:26 | Like I've turned off my likes. |
00:16:26 | 00:16:29 | I can't see how many likes people get |
00:16:29 | 00:16:31 | because I used to go into that habit of like, |
00:16:31 | 00:16:33 | this person is the same niche as I am, |
00:16:33 | 00:16:34 | and they're getting more likes than me. |
00:16:34 | 00:16:36 | And we have the same amount of followers what's happening? |
00:16:36 | 00:16:38 | My follower account, like if they're not loyal anymore, |
00:16:38 | 00:16:38 | what's going on? |
00:16:38 | 00:16:40 | I have to turn off likes. |
00:16:40 | 00:16:44 | So finding ways to make your mental health be sane |
00:16:44 | 00:16:46 | throughout the whole social media journey |
00:16:46 | 00:16:47 | is so important. |
00:16:48 | 00:16:50 | - You mentioned winning through authentikity |
00:16:50 | 00:16:52 | and being authentik and stuff a couple times. |
00:16:52 | 00:16:57 | So does that mean that the content that performs best |
00:16:57 | 00:17:02 | is actually the raw, stumbly not perfect kind of content |
00:17:02 | 00:17:05 | and you don't need to really try to be like someone |
00:17:05 | 00:17:07 | you see on TV, who seems to be perfect. |
00:17:07 | 00:17:09 | I mean, is that really what I'm hearing you say? |
00:17:09 | 00:17:12 | - Oh yeah, for sure. |
00:17:12 | 00:17:16 | I'll give you an example recently I posted this video of me. |
00:17:17 | 00:17:19 | A lot of my videos have to do with like |
00:17:19 | 00:17:22 | some of them I planned out sketch comedy, |
00:17:22 | 00:17:25 | I rent these sets and everything like that, |
00:17:25 | 00:17:26 | but then sometimes they don't perform well. |
00:17:26 | 00:17:31 | I rent these sets that like have the airplane sets, |
00:17:31 | 00:17:33 | hospital room, jail room going above and beyond |
00:17:33 | 00:17:35 | in my content, I do some of those. |
00:17:35 | 00:17:38 | But it's funny because when I would do the most big- |
00:17:38 | 00:17:39 | - Wait, you can rent sets |
00:17:39 | 00:17:41 | that are like airplanes and hospital. |
00:17:41 | 00:17:43 | Is that because you're in LA or something? |
00:17:43 | 00:17:46 | - That's 'cause I'm in LA and the Lord has been blessing. |
00:17:46 | 00:17:49 | So the finances are able to support these expenses |
00:17:49 | 00:17:50 | to up my content. |
00:17:51 | 00:17:52 | - That's cool, but keep going. |
00:17:52 | 00:17:53 | - Yeah, thank you. |
00:17:53 | 00:17:54 | - Where were you going with that? |
00:17:54 | 00:17:55 | - I was going with that like, |
00:17:55 | 00:17:59 | sometimes those videos when I posted I'm in an airplane, |
00:17:59 | 00:18:02 | as a flight attendant character that performs, okay. |
00:18:02 | 00:18:05 | But yesterday I posted, or two days ago, |
00:18:05 | 00:18:07 | I posted a video of me asking people |
00:18:07 | 00:18:10 | what sponge do y'all use because they're just African sponge |
00:18:10 | 00:18:12 | that I've used growing up |
00:18:12 | 00:18:14 | that I thought everyone in their household used it. |
00:18:14 | 00:18:16 | But when I got to college, no one was using it. |
00:18:16 | 00:18:19 | And it has over 50,000 views right now. |
00:18:19 | 00:18:21 | And all the comments are so engaging, my community |
00:18:21 | 00:18:24 | on top of other people, like my culture, we use this |
00:18:24 | 00:18:26 | and this and this and that and this and this and that. |
00:18:26 | 00:18:28 | And that's just because I was asking them a question, |
00:18:28 | 00:18:29 | people wanna feel included. |
00:18:29 | 00:18:32 | So it can be as easy as you posting a video, |
00:18:32 | 00:18:35 | recording it as like a FaceTime call. |
00:18:35 | 00:18:36 | People wanna feel like they're your friends on TikTok. |
00:18:36 | 00:18:39 | They wanna feel like they're part of your life |
00:18:39 | 00:18:40 | and bring them in. |
00:18:40 | 00:18:43 | So if I'm asking a question that has to be involved |
00:18:43 | 00:18:44 | with their life, they can find relatability there, |
00:18:44 | 00:18:47 | 'cause it's like, you know, |
00:18:47 | 00:18:49 | so I really do think that you can win. |
00:18:49 | 00:18:52 | I mean, of course overly produced content |
00:18:52 | 00:18:53 | still has a spot to win. |
00:18:53 | 00:18:55 | 'Cause I do a balance of overly produced |
00:18:55 | 00:18:57 | and relatable stuff. |
00:18:57 | 00:19:00 | But those toking to camera stuff is more relatable. |
00:19:00 | 00:19:01 | People can relate to it, |
00:19:02 | 00:19:03 | - Well, and I like this |
00:19:03 | 00:19:07 | because so many people don't have the gift, if you will, |
00:19:07 | 00:19:09 | to be able to know how to do overly produced content. |
00:19:09 | 00:19:12 | This means you can actually get started with imperfection. |
00:19:12 | 00:19:14 | You get started just wherever you are |
00:19:14 | 00:19:15 | with your phone, right? |
00:19:15 | 00:19:16 | - Yeah, literally. |
00:19:18 | 00:19:20 | - Let's tok about sounds and trends |
00:19:20 | 00:19:21 | because you toked to me a little bit about that. |
00:19:21 | 00:19:23 | You said, hey, let's be sure to mention |
00:19:23 | 00:19:25 | something about sound and trends. |
00:19:25 | 00:19:27 | What do people need to know about sounds and trends |
00:19:27 | 00:19:30 | when it comes to preparing to make their videos |
00:19:30 | 00:19:31 | maybe on TikTok? |
00:19:31 | 00:19:36 | - Okay, I would say sounds, if TikTok was a vehicle, |
00:19:39 | 00:19:41 | the wheels of the video will be sounds |
00:19:41 | 00:19:45 | because that's what drives your video to people's screens. |
00:19:45 | 00:19:47 | On TikTok there's something called the For You page, |
00:19:47 | 00:19:50 | which is equivalent to the Explore page. |
00:19:50 | 00:19:53 | And you want your videos to be on that For You page, |
00:19:53 | 00:19:55 | because that means that people are discovering your videos. |
00:19:55 | 00:19:57 | People are endlessly, just scrolling, |
00:19:57 | 00:20:00 | vertikally scrolling down the platform. |
00:20:00 | 00:20:04 | But if there is like a song that's trending |
00:20:04 | 00:20:06 | and I've watched a video that has that song in it |
00:20:06 | 00:20:09 | more than likely TikTok will feed me more videos |
00:20:09 | 00:20:11 | that has to do with that song. |
00:20:11 | 00:20:12 | Because more than likely, maybe that song |
00:20:12 | 00:20:14 | is associated with like a challenge. |
00:20:14 | 00:20:18 | For example, the Beyonce Drop challenge. |
00:20:18 | 00:20:20 | When a song would throw something in air and drop down low, |
00:20:20 | 00:20:23 | "Give me some, oh, no, no." |
00:20:23 | 00:20:24 | Y'all know what I, listeners you guys know |
00:20:24 | 00:20:25 | what I'm toking about. |
00:20:25 | 00:20:26 | - They, I don't, they do. |
00:20:28 | 00:20:31 | - Yeah, so with that, there's a hashtag associated with it. |
00:20:31 | 00:20:33 | Hashtag Drop challenge and there's a song. |
00:20:33 | 00:20:36 | So every time you hear that Beyonce song you know, |
00:20:36 | 00:20:38 | people are gonna be dropping down low on that video. |
00:20:38 | 00:20:42 | So we utilize it to your business, to your content. |
00:20:42 | 00:20:45 | Let's say your content is about fashion, |
00:20:45 | 00:20:47 | budget friendly fashion. |
00:20:47 | 00:20:50 | You can utilize that song as you're giving |
00:20:50 | 00:20:54 | like five budget friendly tips to find luxury fashion. |
00:20:55 | 00:20:57 | Use the song, you do the trend, |
00:20:57 | 00:21:00 | but add the text on the screen, giving them step one, |
00:21:00 | 00:21:02 | step two, step three different tips. |
00:21:02 | 00:21:06 | So again, sound is so important because without the music, |
00:21:06 | 00:21:08 | more than likely to TikTok won't know |
00:21:08 | 00:21:10 | who to feed your video to. |
00:21:10 | 00:21:12 | Without the hashtags, TikTok won't know |
00:21:12 | 00:21:14 | who your community you're toking to. |
00:21:14 | 00:21:16 | Without the, you said sounds and what was the other? |
00:21:18 | 00:21:19 | - It was just sounds and trends. |
00:21:19 | 00:21:20 | - Trends without, |
00:21:20 | 00:21:23 | so every trend has a hashtag associated with it. |
00:21:23 | 00:21:26 | So without the hashtag that has to do with the trend |
00:21:26 | 00:21:27 | TikTok won't know who is your community? |
00:21:27 | 00:21:30 | Who is your video speaking to, that's why it's so important |
00:21:30 | 00:21:31 | to use certain sounds in your videos. |
00:21:31 | 00:21:34 | Even like that Siri voice, like that says, |
00:21:34 | 00:21:37 | "I tried this new banana bread recipe," |
00:21:37 | 00:21:39 | like using that Siri voice alone, |
00:21:39 | 00:21:41 | people will stop scrolling and watch your video |
00:21:41 | 00:21:45 | because it's familiar, it triggers something in our brain |
00:21:45 | 00:21:48 | is like, okay, stop, scroll and watch, you get? |
00:21:48 | 00:21:49 | - Fascinating, so, okay. |
00:21:49 | 00:21:54 | Let's tok about, not all videos are engaging obviously. |
00:21:54 | 00:21:57 | So let's break down kind of what you believe, |
00:21:57 | 00:22:01 | what the Drea Okeke method is, if you will. |
00:22:01 | 00:22:04 | What are the elements to a engaging video? |
00:22:04 | 00:22:08 | Because obviously if it's more engaging, |
00:22:08 | 00:22:10 | then the algorithm is going to show it |
00:22:10 | 00:22:11 | to more people presumably. |
00:22:11 | 00:22:15 | And it's just gonna be spiral upon itself. |
00:22:15 | 00:22:17 | So what are the elements that we need to understand |
00:22:17 | 00:22:21 | when it comes to creating really engaging videos? |
00:22:21 | 00:22:22 | - Of course. |
00:22:22 | 00:22:25 | So there's two categories of this. |
00:22:25 | 00:22:29 | The first set you have to know is I say is the three E's. |
00:22:29 | 00:22:33 | Your video needs to either be, give some type of value, |
00:22:33 | 00:22:35 | either educational value, you know, |
00:22:35 | 00:22:38 | are you gonna teach me how to bake something? |
00:22:38 | 00:22:40 | What books to read? |
00:22:40 | 00:22:41 | Some type of educational value. |
00:22:41 | 00:22:43 | The other E is entertaining, are you gonna entertain? |
00:22:43 | 00:22:44 | Are you're gonna make me laugh? |
00:22:44 | 00:22:47 | Are you going to just keep me entertained? |
00:22:47 | 00:22:50 | The third value is emotion, the third E emotion, |
00:22:50 | 00:22:51 | are you gonna give somebody emotional value? |
00:22:51 | 00:22:53 | Am I gonna get nostalgic from watching your video? |
00:22:53 | 00:22:56 | Am I gonna feel like inspired to travel now |
00:22:56 | 00:22:57 | because I've see your video. |
00:22:57 | 00:22:59 | So those three E's are so important when you think about |
00:22:59 | 00:23:01 | your storytelling of your video. |
00:23:01 | 00:23:04 | But to break down when you start recording that video- |
00:23:04 | 00:23:05 | - Wait, wait, wait real quick, |
00:23:05 | 00:23:07 | I gotta ask on these three E's. |
00:23:08 | 00:23:11 | Obviously entertaining and educational, don't have to be, |
00:23:11 | 00:23:13 | do you have to have all three of them in one video |
00:23:13 | 00:23:14 | or do you just have to have one of them? |
00:23:14 | 00:23:15 | What's your thoughts? |
00:23:17 | 00:23:20 | - Why not? If you put all three in them, you're winning. |
00:23:20 | 00:23:22 | - 'Cause educational and entertaining |
00:23:22 | 00:23:26 | might not be as easy to accomplish, I mean, I would imagine. |
00:23:26 | 00:23:28 | - It is, I notike a guy on TikTok , |
00:23:31 | 00:23:34 | he teaches people like mental health stuff, |
00:23:34 | 00:23:36 | like proper mental health practikes, |
00:23:36 | 00:23:40 | but in a dialogue, like a conversational dialogue, |
00:23:40 | 00:23:41 | that's actually funny. |
00:23:41 | 00:23:44 | Like he adds like certain characters in there |
00:23:44 | 00:23:47 | and has overall message about mental health in it. |
00:23:48 | 00:23:50 | It was Joshua, I forgot his last name, but yeah. |
00:23:50 | 00:23:52 | So it's very possible. |
00:23:52 | 00:23:55 | Even if you wanted to do educational and is entertaining, |
00:23:55 | 00:23:57 | the way you edit your video too can add it. |
00:23:57 | 00:24:01 | You know can add certain, like, GIFs in there, |
00:24:01 | 00:24:06 | certain popups, you can do quick cuts from one, |
00:24:06 | 00:24:09 | you can start from one location |
00:24:09 | 00:24:10 | and transition to another location |
00:24:10 | 00:24:13 | as you're given that those tips as educational, |
00:24:13 | 00:24:14 | just to keep me engaged. |
00:24:14 | 00:24:16 | So there's different tricks to tips and tricks |
00:24:16 | 00:24:18 | to like make your video entertaining. |
00:24:18 | 00:24:22 | - On the emotional side, that sounds a little more advanced. |
00:24:22 | 00:24:24 | It seems, for example, since you're a comedian, |
00:24:24 | 00:24:27 | I think you understand how to trigger emotions, |
00:24:27 | 00:24:30 | but I would imagine most people might not understand |
00:24:30 | 00:24:32 | how to do that, do you have any tips on that? |
00:24:34 | 00:24:35 | - That's a great question. |
00:24:35 | 00:24:39 | Like, I feel like if you want to trigger emotion, |
00:24:41 | 00:24:43 | I think music too helps, |
00:24:43 | 00:24:45 | the music you put behind your video. |
00:24:45 | 00:24:48 | If you're trying to keep someone happy, |
00:24:48 | 00:24:53 | for me, I use this partikular comedy sound it's on TikTok. |
00:24:53 | 00:24:55 | There's whole sound library on there. |
00:24:55 | 00:24:57 | If you are trying to do more inspirational, |
00:24:57 | 00:24:59 | you know what type of music to use, |
00:24:59 | 00:25:00 | more inspirational soundtrack. |
00:25:00 | 00:25:02 | If you want something like mystery, |
00:25:02 | 00:25:03 | that's the probably emotion. |
00:25:03 | 00:25:06 | And also the way you're gonna tell your story. |
00:25:06 | 00:25:11 | And that's why I was gonna go into like the nitty and gritty |
00:25:12 | 00:25:14 | for creating like a good solid video. |
00:25:14 | 00:25:16 | I mean, for the three E's, again, in my course, |
00:25:16 | 00:25:20 | I dive more in depth in there, but for this, |
00:25:20 | 00:25:22 | so a call to action. |
00:25:22 | 00:25:26 | I think we could call it like CHIES, C-H-I-E-S. |
00:25:26 | 00:25:30 | A call to action, a hook that's for the H, |
00:25:30 | 00:25:33 | I, involve your community, |
00:25:33 | 00:25:37 | E, the way you edit your video. |
00:25:37 | 00:25:40 | So, and then S, the sound you use. |
00:25:40 | 00:25:42 | So I could start off with the hook. |
00:25:42 | 00:25:43 | The hook is so important. |
00:25:43 | 00:25:46 | What a hook is how are you gonna hook |
00:25:47 | 00:25:48 | that person that's watching your video |
00:25:48 | 00:25:50 | in the first three seconds, |
00:25:50 | 00:25:52 | first second let's just say that. |
00:25:53 | 00:25:54 | Because people are scrolling |
00:25:54 | 00:25:56 | through countless amount of videos. |
00:25:56 | 00:25:59 | So the things you say in that first three seconds |
00:25:59 | 00:26:01 | of a video matter so much. |
00:26:01 | 00:26:02 | And when I think of hooks, |
00:26:02 | 00:26:05 | I'll give you an example of hooks, like five red flags |
00:26:05 | 00:26:08 | you should know about blank. |
00:26:08 | 00:26:12 | You have been doing blank wrong so long. |
00:26:13 | 00:26:16 | The bank does not want you to know this about your blank. |
00:26:16 | 00:26:20 | You know, so like, as humans, we are very selfish, |
00:26:20 | 00:26:22 | as much as we want to deny we're not. |
00:26:22 | 00:26:25 | We like to think about things that involve us. |
00:26:25 | 00:26:27 | So if I'm a business and I'm trying to sell, |
00:26:27 | 00:26:28 | for example, this Apple watch, |
00:26:28 | 00:26:32 | I'm not gonna post a video about like, |
00:26:32 | 00:26:33 | hey guys, I just bought this Apple watch. |
00:26:33 | 00:26:35 | And I love it because it does this does that. |
00:26:35 | 00:26:38 | You should get it because this, I'm gonna scroll. |
00:26:38 | 00:26:40 | But if I'm a business and I wanna sell the Apple watch, |
00:26:40 | 00:26:44 | I'm gonna say, here's why the Apple watch |
00:26:44 | 00:26:48 | is gonna help you have, you know, change your life. |
00:26:48 | 00:26:50 | Here's how the Apple watch is gonna change your lifestyle. |
00:26:50 | 00:26:52 | Apple watch is gonna change my lifestyle? Let me watch it. |
00:26:52 | 00:26:55 | That keyword you is so big in your videos. |
00:26:55 | 00:26:56 | In the hooking them in. |
00:26:56 | 00:26:58 | You've been doing this wrong way, |
00:26:59 | 00:27:02 | five signs you should blank and insert your business, |
00:27:02 | 00:27:03 | whatever it is. |
00:27:03 | 00:27:05 | - I find this so fascinating |
00:27:05 | 00:27:07 | because like on the Apple watch, (coughs) |
00:27:07 | 00:27:10 | I would imagine you could also tok about like six things |
00:27:10 | 00:27:12 | they don't tell you the Apple watch can do |
00:27:12 | 00:27:13 | or something like that, right? |
00:27:13 | 00:27:14 | - Yeah, exactly, that's a good hook. |
00:27:14 | 00:27:16 | Six things they don't tell you, |
00:27:16 | 00:27:17 | the Apple watch can do. |
00:27:17 | 00:27:21 | Like that keyword you is like, oh me, I wanna know this. |
00:27:21 | 00:27:22 | What are they not telling me? |
00:27:22 | 00:27:24 | Let me find out. |
00:27:24 | 00:27:27 | - Yeah, and it's almost like right in a good headline |
00:27:27 | 00:27:30 | to like a blog post or to an ad |
00:27:30 | 00:27:31 | or something along those lines. |
00:27:31 | 00:27:34 | But so you say that right in the beginning. |
00:27:34 | 00:27:37 | And is there any more to the hook other than |
00:27:37 | 00:27:40 | some sort of like, it sounds like what I'm hearing is |
00:27:40 | 00:27:42 | this is what you're gonna discover |
00:27:42 | 00:27:44 | if you keep listening to me is really |
00:27:44 | 00:27:46 | what you're saying in the hook, right? |
00:27:46 | 00:27:48 | - Exactly, that is it. |
00:27:48 | 00:27:50 | And then of course you want them, |
00:27:50 | 00:27:52 | 'cause TikTok is really big on watch time. |
00:27:55 | 00:27:57 | When your video ends up putting For You page |
00:27:57 | 00:28:00 | like algorithm is calculating, like, okay, |
00:28:00 | 00:28:01 | now it's gonna feed as the people |
00:28:01 | 00:28:02 | who are in your niche. |
00:28:02 | 00:28:04 | And they're gonna check, |
00:28:04 | 00:28:06 | how long are they watching the video? Do they scroll? |
00:28:06 | 00:28:07 | Do they watch it to the end? |
00:28:07 | 00:28:09 | You wanna keep them watch it throughout the end. |
00:28:09 | 00:28:11 | So that's where, of course you keep your video engaging |
00:28:11 | 00:28:12 | with the way you edit it. |
00:28:12 | 00:28:15 | But the most important part too is the call to action, |
00:28:15 | 00:28:17 | involving, so, and then for the hooks, |
00:28:17 | 00:28:18 | let me go back a little bit. |
00:28:18 | 00:28:20 | For the hooks, you can either say it |
00:28:20 | 00:28:22 | or put the text on the screen. |
00:28:22 | 00:28:24 | - Oh, do you have a preference? |
00:28:24 | 00:28:26 | Which one do you think works best? |
00:28:26 | 00:28:28 | - I think both, honestly.(chuckles) |
00:28:28 | 00:28:31 | - Oh, so you recommend, you normally do both? |
00:28:31 | 00:28:35 | - I usually do one, but if you could do both do both. |
00:28:35 | 00:28:38 | So for example, if you're doing a voiceover on your video, |
00:28:38 | 00:28:40 | if you're not present in the video |
00:28:40 | 00:28:41 | and you're doing a voiceover, you might wanna use |
00:28:41 | 00:28:45 | the text on the screen and have the Siri voice tok it. |
00:28:45 | 00:28:47 | What is it called? The text to speech feature. |
00:28:47 | 00:28:50 | That's when the Siri voice reads the text on the screen. |
00:28:50 | 00:28:55 | So, but I think most people do the hook |
00:28:55 | 00:28:59 | when they just say it because they're facing the camera, |
00:28:59 | 00:29:00 | they're toking to the camera |
00:29:00 | 00:29:02 | and then they're able to say it. |
00:29:02 | 00:29:04 | But again, it depends on the type of format. |
00:29:04 | 00:29:05 | If you could do both do both, |
00:29:05 | 00:29:07 | as long as it's not overlapping each other. |
00:29:07 | 00:29:08 | - What about the way you say it? |
00:29:08 | 00:29:10 | I mean like, like let's make one up on the fly. |
00:29:10 | 00:29:13 | Like I know you, it's not just, |
00:29:13 | 00:29:16 | here are six things you need to know, right. |
00:29:16 | 00:29:19 | It's like, you probably say it in a creative way, |
00:29:19 | 00:29:21 | I would imagine, even though it's the same words |
00:29:21 | 00:29:23 | or you say it in a way that |
00:29:23 | 00:29:25 | has a little bit of entertainment value to it. |
00:29:25 | 00:29:26 | So how do you go? |
00:29:26 | 00:29:29 | Like let's make one up on the fly. |
00:29:29 | 00:29:31 | - Okay, let's see. |
00:29:34 | 00:29:37 | Here are three signs you need to drop your ex |
00:29:37 | 00:29:39 | or drop your husband or something like that. |
00:29:39 | 00:29:41 | So that's something like, you got three reasons |
00:29:41 | 00:29:45 | you need to change your car. |
00:29:45 | 00:29:46 | - Okay, but do you say it? |
00:29:46 | 00:29:50 | Like, I would imagine you must record a bunch of variations |
00:29:50 | 00:29:51 | and decide which one you like |
00:29:51 | 00:29:52 | 'cause that's really how you do it. |
00:29:52 | 00:29:56 | - I think the more, again, I don't wanna- |
00:29:56 | 00:29:59 | - Or do you just go with it and not worry so much |
00:29:59 | 00:30:00 | about how you deliver it? |
00:30:00 | 00:30:02 | - I don't worry about how I deliver it. |
00:30:02 | 00:30:05 | But I do know if I'm going according |
00:30:05 | 00:30:06 | to what I've seen on TikTok, |
00:30:06 | 00:30:09 | I've seen people do more high energy, |
00:30:09 | 00:30:11 | more like as they're recording, |
00:30:11 | 00:30:12 | 'cause they're facing the camera, |
00:30:12 | 00:30:14 | they kind of zoom in on their face |
00:30:14 | 00:30:15 | 'cause it's very engaging. |
00:30:15 | 00:30:17 | It's like, whoa, you guys, |
00:30:17 | 00:30:19 | Apple watch want you to know about this. |
00:30:19 | 00:30:22 | It's like, oh, okay, you like, okay. |
00:30:22 | 00:30:24 | But I don't wanna encourage everyone |
00:30:24 | 00:30:26 | to start doing this certain, |
00:30:26 | 00:30:31 | if it's not normal to you, then it's gonna come off weird. |
00:30:31 | 00:30:32 | - It could sound fake. |
00:30:32 | 00:30:33 | - Exactly, exactly. |
00:30:35 | 00:30:37 | - With podcasters, a lot of new podcasters, |
00:30:37 | 00:30:39 | they try to tok, oh, very professional. |
00:30:39 | 00:30:42 | Even though it's not the way they normally communicate. |
00:30:42 | 00:30:45 | (laughs) |
00:30:45 | 00:30:46 | - Right. |
00:30:46 | 00:30:48 | - Now that might be a cool TikTok but you know. |
00:30:48 | 00:30:50 | - Honestly, that's so relatable. |
00:30:50 | 00:30:52 | 'Cause people that listen to podcasts would know, |
00:30:52 | 00:30:54 | they'd be like, oh my God, that's so true. |
00:30:55 | 00:30:57 | But again, if they're scrolling |
00:30:57 | 00:31:00 | and they see that text on the screen, |
00:31:00 | 00:31:02 | 'cause sometimes people scroll and they're watching videos |
00:31:02 | 00:31:04 | without listening to it. |
00:31:04 | 00:31:05 | They will see that text |
00:31:05 | 00:31:07 | and more likely they'll stop scrolling. |
00:31:07 | 00:31:10 | So text on the screen with your hook can be more helpful. |
00:31:10 | 00:31:15 | - Okay, so let's say we got a good hook |
00:31:15 | 00:31:16 | and the hook is something as simple |
00:31:16 | 00:31:19 | as just like we toked about something designed |
00:31:19 | 00:31:23 | to draw someone in, call to action. |
00:31:23 | 00:31:25 | Is that at the end of the video, is it the middle of video |
00:31:25 | 00:31:26 | or when do you tok about the call to action? |
00:31:26 | 00:31:29 | - Call to action is definitely towards the end of the video. |
00:31:30 | 00:31:32 | It can be as easy as telling them, |
00:31:33 | 00:31:36 | follow for more content like this, |
00:31:36 | 00:31:39 | save this for later 'cause you going to need it. |
00:31:39 | 00:31:42 | It can be also that again, that text on a screen, |
00:31:42 | 00:31:45 | prompting them and showing them like an arrow, |
00:31:45 | 00:31:47 | like pick that follow button if you want more tips. |
00:31:48 | 00:31:50 | Comments and share your thoughts. |
00:31:51 | 00:31:52 | That's a call to action. |
00:31:52 | 00:31:54 | Anything that's gonna increase your engagement, |
00:31:55 | 00:31:57 | you want to call them to action. |
00:31:57 | 00:32:00 | Because again, people we're humans, we're scrolling. |
00:32:00 | 00:32:01 | My sister is just like that, |
00:32:01 | 00:32:04 | my sister will watch a ton of videos and not even like that. |
00:32:04 | 00:32:06 | And I'm like, girl, get it together. |
00:32:06 | 00:32:08 | This helps the algorithm, this helps the creators, |
00:32:08 | 00:32:10 | but she's like, I don't care I'm just gonna watch it. |
00:32:10 | 00:32:11 | So if you have a call to action, |
00:32:11 | 00:32:15 | they're gonna remember to like, comments, share. |
00:32:15 | 00:32:17 | - What about the ones where it just ends abruptly |
00:32:17 | 00:32:19 | and it just seems to loop over and over again. |
00:32:19 | 00:32:21 | And people wanna watch it a lot without a call to action. |
00:32:21 | 00:32:24 | Is that a strategy or do you advise against that? |
00:32:24 | 00:32:26 | - Definitely a strategy when it comes to editing. |
00:32:26 | 00:32:27 | So that was one of my E's. |
00:32:27 | 00:32:28 | When it comes to editing |
00:32:28 | 00:32:30 | 'cause then they don't know they're watching it again. |
00:32:30 | 00:32:32 | They're like, oh I feel like the third time watching like, |
00:32:32 | 00:32:34 | oh I'm watching it again. |
00:32:34 | 00:32:36 | So that's what's a creative way to do it. |
00:32:36 | 00:32:38 | It's a creative strategy when it comes to your editing. |
00:32:38 | 00:32:41 | But it's again, that's a bit more advanced, |
00:32:41 | 00:32:42 | for people who wanna start off |
00:32:42 | 00:32:45 | if that's not the biggest, I think the best call to action |
00:32:45 | 00:32:47 | is actually like put in the text on the screen, |
00:32:47 | 00:32:49 | like save this for later, |
00:32:49 | 00:32:50 | save this recipe for later, save this- |
00:32:50 | 00:32:51 | - Well, I like that. |
00:32:51 | 00:32:53 | That means you don't have to say it almost. |
00:32:53 | 00:32:56 | So if you put the words on the screen, |
00:32:56 | 00:32:59 | because it's fascinating because on other platforms |
00:32:59 | 00:33:04 | they kind of punish you sometimes if you verbally tell them |
00:33:06 | 00:33:07 | to do a certain action, you know what I mean? |
00:33:07 | 00:33:10 | Like for example, on Facebook, |
00:33:10 | 00:33:13 | if you hand write something like share this with friends |
00:33:13 | 00:33:15 | or whatever, the algorithm will actually punish you. |
00:33:15 | 00:33:18 | And I don't know if it does it inside of videos, |
00:33:18 | 00:33:19 | but I would imagine the algorithms are so good |
00:33:19 | 00:33:21 | that they can actually transcribe those videos |
00:33:21 | 00:33:23 | and figure out what you're saying. |
00:33:23 | 00:33:25 | But what I'm hearing you say |
00:33:27 | 00:33:29 | is intuitively it makes sense as a marketer |
00:33:29 | 00:33:31 | that if you don't tell someone to do something |
00:33:31 | 00:33:32 | they will do nothing. |
00:33:32 | 00:33:34 | And if you tell someone to do something, |
00:33:34 | 00:33:35 | some of them will do it, right. |
00:33:35 | 00:33:36 | Not all of them will do it, |
00:33:36 | 00:33:39 | but some of them will do it and they'll be like, oh yeah, |
00:33:39 | 00:33:42 | I should follow Drea so that I can get updated or whatever, |
00:33:42 | 00:33:44 | or see more of her stuff. |
00:33:45 | 00:33:46 | - Oh, yeah, definitely. |
00:33:46 | 00:33:49 | I mean, I feel like there's always so many different myths |
00:33:49 | 00:33:52 | about what the algorithm does and what it doesn't do. |
00:33:52 | 00:33:54 | 'Cause I've even seen videos |
00:33:54 | 00:33:57 | that will put their Instagram handle on their TikTok. |
00:33:57 | 00:34:00 | And it still has like a gazillion views, |
00:34:00 | 00:34:03 | but people say like, don't promote your other platforms. |
00:34:03 | 00:34:05 | So again, those are all different myths. |
00:34:05 | 00:34:07 | I'm a believer in just try not different things, |
00:34:07 | 00:34:09 | try out and see what works. |
00:34:09 | 00:34:11 | Because like I would tell people, |
00:34:11 | 00:34:12 | hashtags are still important because again, |
00:34:12 | 00:34:15 | the hashtags helps the algorithm know |
00:34:15 | 00:34:16 | who to put your videos out to, |
00:34:16 | 00:34:18 | use like a couple niche hashtags, |
00:34:18 | 00:34:20 | use a couple general hashtags, |
00:34:20 | 00:34:22 | but there's some people who post |
00:34:22 | 00:34:25 | and their caption has no hashtags and it still does well |
00:34:25 | 00:34:27 | and they don't have that many followers yet. |
00:34:27 | 00:34:30 | So again, it's just you taking what people say |
00:34:30 | 00:34:32 | and trying out and when you see something worse, |
00:34:32 | 00:34:33 | you stik to it. |
00:34:34 | 00:34:37 | - Okay, so we toked about call to action hook. |
00:34:37 | 00:34:39 | I think you were gonna mention something about editing. |
00:34:39 | 00:34:40 | - Editing, yes. |
00:34:40 | 00:34:41 | So we toked a little about editing too. |
00:34:41 | 00:34:45 | Like the looping, editing, instead of like, |
00:34:45 | 00:34:49 | if you're gonna tok to the camera for a long time, |
00:34:49 | 00:34:50 | don't just sit down in one spot |
00:34:50 | 00:34:53 | and tok to the camera forever. |
00:34:53 | 00:34:55 | Try using different locations |
00:34:55 | 00:34:57 | 'cause that refocuses people's attention |
00:34:57 | 00:34:59 | to keep it engaging. |
00:34:59 | 00:35:01 | So you start with, here are five things you need |
00:35:01 | 00:35:02 | to do to change your life. |
00:35:02 | 00:35:07 | Next location, try doing da, da, da, next location. |
00:35:08 | 00:35:09 | You know what I'm saying? |
00:35:09 | 00:35:10 | So trying different location. |
00:35:10 | 00:35:11 | - And I would imagine you could be in a location. |
00:35:11 | 00:35:14 | You could just rotate like 15 degree, |
00:35:14 | 00:35:16 | you could just rotate a little bit |
00:35:16 | 00:35:17 | and make sure it looks a little different, right? |
00:35:17 | 00:35:19 | That's all you gotta do? - Exactly. |
00:35:19 | 00:35:22 | With the text on the screen, and that's people, |
00:35:22 | 00:35:25 | text on the screen, I love it because people are reading |
00:35:25 | 00:35:27 | and they're also listening. |
00:35:27 | 00:35:29 | So they're gonna rewatch the video, they're gonna like |
00:35:29 | 00:35:32 | 'cause they wanna reread what was on the screen. |
00:35:32 | 00:35:35 | So that's another big one too when you're editing. |
00:35:36 | 00:35:39 | - Real quick on the captioning or the text on the screen, |
00:35:39 | 00:35:40 | do they make it easy? |
00:35:40 | 00:35:41 | Do they automatikally caption |
00:35:41 | 00:35:43 | or do you have to type it in or how does that work? |
00:35:43 | 00:35:45 | - It automatikally captions it for you too. |
00:35:45 | 00:35:48 | It automatikally captions, yeah, on TikTok, it does. |
00:35:48 | 00:35:49 | And you can edit- |
00:35:49 | 00:35:51 | - And you can edit it, so it tries to listen to your voice, |
00:35:51 | 00:35:53 | and then it just pops it up on the screen |
00:35:53 | 00:35:54 | and then you can edit it. |
00:35:54 | 00:35:56 | So generally speaking, |
00:35:56 | 00:36:00 | do you caption your videos or what are your thoughts? |
00:36:00 | 00:36:01 | Should we? Should we not? |
00:36:01 | 00:36:04 | - And when you say caption, do you mean like what? |
00:36:04 | 00:36:06 | 'Cause there's text on the screen and there's- |
00:36:06 | 00:36:09 | - Yeah, I don't know what the difference is. |
00:36:10 | 00:36:12 | I mean, I kind of know what captioning is, |
00:36:12 | 00:36:13 | where it's exactly what you say. |
00:36:13 | 00:36:15 | And then there's text on the screen. |
00:36:15 | 00:36:20 | But should we turn on captions at all |
00:36:20 | 00:36:22 | or should we just put text on the screen |
00:36:22 | 00:36:24 | at the appropriate moments to get them to do call to action? |
00:36:24 | 00:36:26 | Do you understand what I'm asking? |
00:36:26 | 00:36:27 | - Yeah, I understand what you're asking. |
00:36:27 | 00:36:30 | I think, when we tok about captions, |
00:36:30 | 00:36:32 | I will rephrase it in caption is like, |
00:36:32 | 00:36:33 | if you can caption your video, |
00:36:33 | 00:36:35 | like how you capture the Facebook post |
00:36:35 | 00:36:37 | or caption a Instagram post |
00:36:37 | 00:36:39 | and then you can turn on the subtitles, right. |
00:36:40 | 00:36:42 | And that's still called captions |
00:36:42 | 00:36:45 | but we'll call it, for clarity wise, we call it subtitles. |
00:36:45 | 00:36:48 | I think you should always turn it on because again, |
00:36:48 | 00:36:50 | your platform is global on TikTok is global. |
00:36:50 | 00:36:54 | So I always, especially when I'm doing like sketch comedy |
00:36:54 | 00:36:56 | or I'm toking to the camera, I want my video. |
00:36:56 | 00:36:59 | If it reaches an audience that doesn't speak English, |
00:36:59 | 00:37:03 | that they can still read the caption and translate it |
00:37:03 | 00:37:05 | into their language versus trying to like listen |
00:37:05 | 00:37:06 | to the audio and like, what is she saying? |
00:37:06 | 00:37:07 | You know, that kind of staff. |
00:37:07 | 00:37:08 | - Yeah, so I guess, okay, |
00:37:08 | 00:37:11 | so you're toking about closed captioning? |
00:37:11 | 00:37:13 | Is that a button the user turns on and off? |
00:37:13 | 00:37:16 | - Yes. |
00:37:16 | 00:37:17 | - In some cases people literally |
00:37:17 | 00:37:19 | will bake it into the video. |
00:37:19 | 00:37:20 | You understand what I'm asking for? |
00:37:20 | 00:37:21 | - Yeah. |
00:37:21 | 00:37:23 | - Where it's kind of maybe not exactly what they said, |
00:37:23 | 00:37:24 | but a version of what they said, that's- |
00:37:24 | 00:37:26 | - It's popping up. |
00:37:26 | 00:37:27 | - Do you recommend that? Or do you not necessarily- |
00:37:27 | 00:37:28 | - Yes. - You do? |
00:37:28 | 00:37:31 | - Yes, if you can, right, definitely. |
00:37:31 | 00:37:33 | - Just 'cause some people might be in a situation |
00:37:33 | 00:37:34 | where it's really loud |
00:37:34 | 00:37:35 | and they're not able to hear what you're saying |
00:37:35 | 00:37:36 | or something like that, right? |
00:37:36 | 00:37:38 | - Exactly, yes, that's a big one too. |
00:37:38 | 00:37:41 | And again, those things popping up on the screen, |
00:37:41 | 00:37:43 | whatever you can make pop on the screen, |
00:37:43 | 00:37:46 | refocuses people's attention that keeps them engaged. |
00:37:46 | 00:37:49 | Like I would rather watch that and pick up certain keywords |
00:37:49 | 00:37:51 | from what the text you put on the screen, |
00:37:51 | 00:37:54 | the caption you put on the screen versus like just having |
00:37:54 | 00:37:55 | to sit down and listen to you. |
00:37:55 | 00:37:57 | And don't get me wrong also. |
00:37:57 | 00:37:59 | And that's the thing about like TikTok, |
00:37:59 | 00:38:01 | there's so many different communities. |
00:38:01 | 00:38:03 | There is people that just do story times |
00:38:03 | 00:38:05 | and they tell a long story time. |
00:38:05 | 00:38:08 | They tok like for three minutes telling about |
00:38:08 | 00:38:11 | like their past scenarios or something they did in the day. |
00:38:11 | 00:38:13 | They're people doing vlog, there's vlog tok, |
00:38:13 | 00:38:14 | there's book tok, |
00:38:14 | 00:38:16 | and I heard like they're running the book community, |
00:38:16 | 00:38:18 | like books are getting New York Times' bestsellers |
00:38:18 | 00:38:21 | because of TikTok now, it's really huge. |
00:38:21 | 00:38:25 | There's music tok, there's mermaid tok, there's Jeep tok. |
00:38:25 | 00:38:27 | So many different communities. |
00:38:27 | 00:38:29 | So I just like, everyone- |
00:38:29 | 00:38:31 | - Okay, I have to ask what the heck is mermaid tok? |
00:38:31 | 00:38:32 | Is that just like someone toking |
00:38:32 | 00:38:35 | like they're the little mermaid or something like that? |
00:38:35 | 00:38:37 | - So when I led it on mermaid tok, |
00:38:37 | 00:38:39 | 'cause that showed up my For You page, |
00:38:39 | 00:38:41 | it was just a girl like showing that there's proof |
00:38:41 | 00:38:42 | that mermaids do exist. - Oh, okay. |
00:38:42 | 00:38:44 | - And I realized that there's a bunch |
00:38:44 | 00:38:45 | of like different videos about people |
00:38:45 | 00:38:46 | like speculations and whatnot, like conspiracies. |
00:38:46 | 00:38:50 | - Oh, got it. - Yeah, you know. |
00:38:50 | 00:38:52 | - Okay, so let ask you this question. |
00:38:52 | 00:38:55 | So we've toked about hooks and we've toked about editing. |
00:38:55 | 00:38:56 | We've toked about call to action. |
00:38:58 | 00:38:59 | And I don't know if we've skipped |
00:38:59 | 00:39:00 | some of the things you toked about, |
00:39:00 | 00:39:02 | but I definitely wanna make sure we get a chance |
00:39:02 | 00:39:04 | to involving the community in- |
00:39:04 | 00:39:06 | - That was my eye. - Oh, perfect. |
00:39:06 | 00:39:07 | - That's the one that we missed. |
00:39:07 | 00:39:08 | - Let's tok about that. - Yeah, go ahead. |
00:39:08 | 00:39:12 | - No, I mean like tell me, what do we need to know |
00:39:12 | 00:39:14 | about community and involvement |
00:39:14 | 00:39:17 | and what are some suggestions that you have |
00:39:17 | 00:39:20 | if we wanna get more engagement from our community? |
00:39:20 | 00:39:24 | - Yeah, I think for involvement community is so important |
00:39:24 | 00:39:27 | because again, like you could have a million followers |
00:39:27 | 00:39:29 | because you have so many viral videos, |
00:39:29 | 00:39:30 | but then those people don't know anything about you |
00:39:30 | 00:39:33 | because you're not engaging with them, |
00:39:33 | 00:39:35 | you're not replying back to their comments. |
00:39:35 | 00:39:36 | You're not liking their comments. |
00:39:36 | 00:39:39 | One of my favorite ways to involve my community |
00:39:39 | 00:39:42 | is the reply back to comment with video. |
00:39:42 | 00:39:43 | So if you have a comment, |
00:39:43 | 00:39:45 | instead of just like texting back the reply, |
00:39:45 | 00:39:48 | you can use a video in recorder reply. |
00:39:48 | 00:39:51 | So I use that feature when I traveled to Nigeria last year |
00:39:51 | 00:39:54 | and I'm like, listen, y'all, I'm gonna be Nigeria. |
00:39:54 | 00:39:56 | Let me know what content you wanna see. |
00:39:56 | 00:39:58 | And they're like, can you show me some Nigerian food? |
00:39:58 | 00:40:01 | I reply back with video with that content. |
00:40:01 | 00:40:02 | Can you show me some of the dresses? |
00:40:02 | 00:40:03 | Reply back with videos- |
00:40:03 | 00:40:04 | - Real quick, when you say reply back, |
00:40:04 | 00:40:06 | are you publishing that publicly or is that privately? |
00:40:06 | 00:40:08 | - Publicly, it's gonna be publicly, yeah. |
00:40:08 | 00:40:10 | So I created a whole video. |
00:40:10 | 00:40:14 | I got my content idea because someone from my audience |
00:40:14 | 00:40:16 | wanted me to show them the food. |
00:40:16 | 00:40:19 | I reply back to that comment with a video. |
00:40:19 | 00:40:20 | And then when people see that |
00:40:20 | 00:40:23 | it shows that person's comment on the video. |
00:40:23 | 00:40:25 | So then your audience are watching, |
00:40:25 | 00:40:29 | they're like, oh, that person got a shout out. |
00:40:29 | 00:40:30 | I wanna get a shout out too. |
00:40:30 | 00:40:31 | So I'm gonna make sure I comment on every post |
00:40:31 | 00:40:34 | that she posts, so that's how you're engaging them- |
00:40:34 | 00:40:36 | - Is that a feature built into TikTok |
00:40:36 | 00:40:37 | or do you have to do something? |
00:40:37 | 00:40:38 | It is? Wow. |
00:40:38 | 00:40:41 | - It's build to TikTok, yeah, it's built in. |
00:40:41 | 00:40:43 | And then there's, go ahead. |
00:40:43 | 00:40:45 | - Keep going, no, keep going. |
00:40:46 | 00:40:49 | - There's of course going live is another good one too. |
00:40:49 | 00:40:50 | Going live to just like, |
00:40:50 | 00:40:53 | 'cause that way you start to know your audience like more |
00:40:53 | 00:40:56 | on like first name bases, I think it's so important. |
00:40:56 | 00:40:58 | Even if you only have five people in that live stream, |
00:40:58 | 00:40:59 | as long as you're engaging with you, |
00:40:59 | 00:41:00 | that's all that matters. |
00:41:00 | 00:41:04 | 'Cause TikTok community is huge. |
00:41:04 | 00:41:05 | Like I told you like, |
00:41:05 | 00:41:08 | I know one comedian who her video went viral |
00:41:08 | 00:41:10 | and then now she sold out tikets. |
00:41:10 | 00:41:12 | Again, it's like, people are gonna support you |
00:41:12 | 00:41:14 | just because of, they can relate with you. |
00:41:15 | 00:41:16 | They see themselves in you. |
00:41:16 | 00:41:20 | So anyhow you can involve your community in your content |
00:41:20 | 00:41:22 | or just, you know, messaging them, |
00:41:22 | 00:41:24 | even asking them a question. |
00:41:24 | 00:41:25 | There's a question stiker on TikTok |
00:41:25 | 00:41:27 | so that you can ask them questions |
00:41:27 | 00:41:28 | and then they can reply back |
00:41:28 | 00:41:30 | to those questions with a video. |
00:41:30 | 00:41:32 | There's so many different features within TikTok too. |
00:41:32 | 00:41:34 | And again, on my course, I dive into that |
00:41:34 | 00:41:37 | of like different features you can use to really just like |
00:41:37 | 00:41:39 | grow and engage and involve your community |
00:41:39 | 00:41:42 | because I'm nothing without my community. |
00:41:42 | 00:41:44 | I'm like, I'll be nothing without them. |
00:41:44 | 00:41:47 | - I'm curious on the live side of things. |
00:41:49 | 00:41:53 | Obviously you have to have some of your followers |
00:41:53 | 00:41:55 | or whatever they call them on TikTok online |
00:41:55 | 00:41:57 | when you go live. |
00:41:57 | 00:42:00 | Do they have a feature where you can kind of say, |
00:42:00 | 00:42:01 | I'm gonna go live tomorrow at one o'clock |
00:42:01 | 00:42:04 | to kind of get people to like, say I wanna join. |
00:42:04 | 00:42:05 | And if so, what do you do with all that |
00:42:05 | 00:42:06 | to kind of give people a heads up |
00:42:06 | 00:42:08 | that you're gonna be going live? |
00:42:08 | 00:42:10 | - Oh yeah, so there's a feature |
00:42:10 | 00:42:13 | that you can schedule live in your bio. |
00:42:13 | 00:42:14 | So you scheduled live. |
00:42:14 | 00:42:16 | And when you're about to post the video, |
00:42:16 | 00:42:18 | you can link and add that schedule. |
00:42:18 | 00:42:21 | So it shows them like tap to be notified. |
00:42:21 | 00:42:23 | So when you post that video, it shows them like, |
00:42:23 | 00:42:25 | oh, Drea's going live at five o'clock, |
00:42:25 | 00:42:27 | tap this so that you can get |
00:42:27 | 00:42:29 | another notification when she goes live. |
00:42:29 | 00:42:30 | - Do you create a little video |
00:42:30 | 00:42:31 | specifically toking about |
00:42:31 | 00:42:33 | what you're gonna be toking about when you go live? |
00:42:33 | 00:42:34 | Or is that not how it works? |
00:42:34 | 00:42:35 | - For me, I don't, |
00:42:35 | 00:42:37 | but I know there's people that utilize live. |
00:42:37 | 00:42:39 | People that utilize live to even sell things, |
00:42:39 | 00:42:41 | people that utilize live to like, |
00:42:41 | 00:42:43 | 'cause you can duet live |
00:42:43 | 00:42:45 | like you can go live with another person. |
00:42:45 | 00:42:47 | you can call live, let's call that, yeah. |
00:42:47 | 00:42:48 | - I like that. |
00:42:48 | 00:42:50 | - And I think going live is good too |
00:42:50 | 00:42:54 | because, sorry to cut you off, going live is good too, |
00:42:54 | 00:42:56 | because it puts you on a For You page. |
00:42:56 | 00:42:58 | So remember I'm scrolling on my For page, |
00:42:58 | 00:43:01 | I see some random people that are live, |
00:43:01 | 00:43:03 | but if they're doing, it shows a preview of your live. |
00:43:03 | 00:43:06 | So if you're doing something interesting in your live, |
00:43:06 | 00:43:07 | people will click and join in |
00:43:07 | 00:43:09 | and that's a nice way to grow followers too. |
00:43:09 | 00:43:11 | And of course people can do can gift you, |
00:43:11 | 00:43:15 | your fans can like gift you certain gift points. |
00:43:15 | 00:43:17 | They can cash out an actual money like donations |
00:43:17 | 00:43:20 | and like so many different stuff. |
00:43:20 | 00:43:23 | - What about managing comments? |
00:43:23 | 00:43:24 | You have any thoughts on that? |
00:43:24 | 00:43:26 | I mean, I know you toked about how you can make a comment |
00:43:26 | 00:43:29 | into a video, which I thought was really cool. |
00:43:30 | 00:43:33 | I can imagine when you get to be as big as you are, |
00:43:33 | 00:43:34 | that you have more comments |
00:43:34 | 00:43:36 | than you could possibly manage, right. |
00:43:37 | 00:43:37 | What do you do? |
00:43:37 | 00:43:41 | Do you have any tips on how to engage, |
00:43:41 | 00:43:43 | if you will in comments? |
00:43:43 | 00:43:45 | - Oh yeah, that's this is a good question, I love it. |
00:43:45 | 00:43:48 | So some fun ways, honestly on TikTok, |
00:43:48 | 00:43:51 | the comment section sometimes it's funnier |
00:43:51 | 00:43:53 | than the video itself, is more entertaining than the video. |
00:43:53 | 00:43:56 | You get so much knowledge from the comments. |
00:43:56 | 00:43:58 | So some things I do to play around with the comment section |
00:43:58 | 00:44:00 | is like, if I see a certain comment, |
00:44:00 | 00:44:03 | that's like good I'll pin it, so that way it's pinned. |
00:44:03 | 00:44:05 | And then people are replying back to that comment |
00:44:05 | 00:44:06 | and they get like their little followers |
00:44:06 | 00:44:09 | and then I unpin it and pin another comment that's better. |
00:44:09 | 00:44:10 | So that's a nice way |
00:44:10 | 00:44:12 | to like play around in a comment section. |
00:44:12 | 00:44:15 | You can even like comments too, you can like the comments. |
00:44:17 | 00:44:18 | What else can you do in the comment section? |
00:44:18 | 00:44:21 | Of course you can also manage for like, |
00:44:21 | 00:44:22 | you can manage and filter out certain comments |
00:44:22 | 00:44:24 | that you don't want to show. |
00:44:24 | 00:44:27 | So on TikTok, unless you filter out certain words |
00:44:27 | 00:44:29 | 'cause I remember I had a video that went super viral, |
00:44:29 | 00:44:31 | but there are certain keyword |
00:44:31 | 00:44:33 | that they were saying that I didn't want on there. |
00:44:33 | 00:44:35 | So I went on to TikTok and I was like, okay, |
00:44:35 | 00:44:37 | I don't want this word to be showed up in my comments. |
00:44:37 | 00:44:39 | And then anyone who comments |
00:44:39 | 00:44:42 | that kind of comment wouldn't show up, so. |
00:44:42 | 00:44:44 | - That's cool. - Yeah, and I love- |
00:44:44 | 00:44:46 | - Can you manage through the desktop |
00:44:46 | 00:44:48 | or do you have to do it all through your phone? I mean- |
00:44:48 | 00:44:50 | - I think, it's all through the phone. |
00:44:50 | 00:44:52 | I'm not, maybe I think most things |
00:44:52 | 00:44:56 | 'cause they want you to use the app so it's through phone. |
00:44:56 | 00:44:57 | - Yeah. - Yeah. |
00:44:57 | 00:44:58 | - What were you gonna say? |
00:44:58 | 00:45:00 | You were gonna say something else about comments or do we- |
00:45:00 | 00:45:02 | - Yeah, I was, I lost my train of thought. |
00:45:02 | 00:45:05 | It was something about managing comments, |
00:45:05 | 00:45:06 | replying back to comments. |
00:45:06 | 00:45:09 | Oh yeah, I forgot it. |
00:45:09 | 00:45:11 | - It's all right, 'cause you were responding to my comment. |
00:45:11 | 00:45:13 | So I appreciate that. |
00:45:13 | 00:45:18 | Drea, we could go on and on you are a wealth of knowledge. |
00:45:18 | 00:45:21 | Where can people find you on TikTok |
00:45:21 | 00:45:23 | if they want to find you on TikTok. |
00:45:23 | 00:45:27 | And also if they wanna check out your company, your course, |
00:45:27 | 00:45:29 | is there any place that you wanna send them? |
00:45:29 | 00:45:31 | - Oh yes, so I'm sure anyone listening |
00:45:31 | 00:45:34 | to this podcast episode is trying to grow on TikTok. |
00:45:34 | 00:45:37 | So if you are trying to grow on TikTok, |
00:45:37 | 00:45:39 | but you're so confused on how to go about it, |
00:45:39 | 00:45:42 | how to create an account, how to figure out what's trending. |
00:45:42 | 00:45:45 | How to know what sounds to use, how to edit your video. |
00:45:45 | 00:45:50 | I did all this from A to Z on how to grow on TikTok |
