5 Tips For Better Shopify Theme Development | Tips For New Shopify Theme Developer

Title: 5 Tips to Improve Your Shopify Theme Development

Hey guys, it's Bernard. In this video, I'm going to give you five tips to improve your Shopify theme development. Let's get started!

Tip 1: Use a Code Editor

- Use a code editor like VS Code or Sublime Text Editor instead of using the built-in code editor of Shopify

- This will save you time from typing a lot of codes and save your eyes from strain

- Most code editors have a built-in dark mode interface or are customizable

- Install Shopify CLI to make changes to your Shopify theme project without ruining the main theme of the Shopify store you're working on

- Use Theme Check to find issues in your project or code like typos, missing variables, or unused variables

Tip 2: Plan Your Project

- Create a plan and a mock-up design so you know what to do

- Use anything for the planning stage, like Photoshop for making mock-up designs, a document describing your theme, or a wireframe

- Make sure others can understand your web design plan if you're working with someone

- Know first what the theme is for, like if it's for a Shopify store that only sells one product or for a store that sells multiple products

- Know the niche, like gardening, clothing, tech, women, men, etc.

- If you're only creating a feature or a section for your client, learn and understand the Shopify theme that your client is using

- Make sure what you're going to create matches the design of your client's Shopify theme

- If you're working on a pre-existing Shopify theme for your client, do not create a new stylesheet or CSS file

Tip 3: Use the Extension Shopify Theme Inspector

- Use Shopify Theme Inspector, an extension for Chrome that helps you understand the timing of each node of liquid used to generate a page

- This is shown using a flame graph that sorts call stacks based on their total time

- Click on the nodes to see more information about the specific node, like which file it's coming from and how much time it took to finish loading

Tip 4: Use Shopify Developer's Official Blog and Documentation

- Read good articles and documentation in Shopify Developer's page to learn more about Shopify theme development

- Check out other blogs for additional resources

Tip 5: Learn JavaScript

- Unfortunately, some students are not familiar with JavaScript

- You need JavaScript to create an amazing Shopify theme

- Learn about variables and classes, making iteration, making HTTP requests, manipulating the DOM, making pop-ups, and cool effects like scrolls, zoom in, zoom out, etc.

The State of Shopify Theme Development

In this article, we will discuss the state of Shopify theme development, including different workflows available for theme developers, recent features released for themes, and Shopify's vision for the future. We will also touch on the strong and steady growth of the ecosystem and the opportunity for developers in this space.

Where We Are Right Now:

Summer of 2021 saw the launch of Online Store 2.0, which enabled sections on all pages, meta fields natively launched for themes, and the relationship of apps and themes becoming more closely combined with Team app extensions. The reopening of the theme store after a hiatus was also significant. Since then, many improvements have been made to enhance these features. Themes are now more powerful, adaptable, and valuable to merchants than ever before.

Where We Are Going:

Shopify's vision for the future includes custom storefronts for hydrogen, which will allow merchants to reap the benefits of Shopify's back end and have full control over their storefronts. However, liquid remains the more accessible solution for the majority of merchants, particularly those in the early stages of their journey with Shopify.

How We Will Get There:

Shopify is continuously looking to ship improvements in all areas, including tooling, the team store, and developer documentation. The liquid extension for vs code, Shopify's GitHub integration, and the Shopify content platform are just a few examples of these improvements.

It's an exciting time to be working with Shopify themes, and developers have many opportunities to get hands-on experience and contribute to the growing ecosystem. Shopify is committed to making development as easy and fun as possible while providing merchants with powerful and adaptable themes.
