Rachel: Why don't you fill everybody in on what you do at Twitter?
Andrew: Sure! I am the Head of our Small and Medium Business Marketing Group at Twitter. Our job is to help small businesses be successful on our platform by finding their audience and figuring out ways to connect with them.
Rachel: That's great! We've had a lot of questions about Twitter from our community, so they'll be interested in learning from you. Now, let's start with a fun question. If you could have a hangout with anyone in the world, who would it be? And what's the most embarrassing question you would ask them?
Andrew: If it could be any person living or dead, I would definitely want to hang out with Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. As a girl who grew up on Sesame Street and the Muppet Show, it would be absolutely incredible to talk to the person who created all these characters. The embarrassing part about that is that I would ask if a couple of Muppets could come along to the Hangout. And if he said yes, I would probably ask about doing a Rainbow Connection sing-along. My favorite Muppet is Ralph, even though he's an underrepresented Muppet. I absolutely love him. Fraggle Rock was also one of my favorites.
Rachel: Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved Fraggle Rock too! Okay, let's get started with our conversation about Twitter today. It's a safe assumption that everybody knows what Twitter is, but people might not know who is actually on Twitter. Who are the small business owners reaching on Twitter if they use it?
Andrew: The value of our audience is that every day, millions of people show up on our platform to discover new content and share their interests. As a small business, it's a great opportunity to introduce what you do and have a deeper conversation with your audience. By creating a follower community that is interested in your services or products, you increase the likelihood of people responding to your direct response advertising. In fact, a study showed that 60% of people who follow an SMB on Twitter have gone on to purchase from that SMB.
Rachel: That's amazing! So small business owners need to realize that their customers are on Twitter, regardless of what they're selling. Their audiences are their next best loyal customers. They just need to figure out how to start that conversation with them.
Andrew: Exactly! It's a great opportunity, especially with the holidays coming up. We recently did a holiday research study that showed that more people, particularly in the US, will be spending on holidays this year. It's about $900, which is a 12% increase compared to last year. It's great news for small businesses because we found that 37% of respondents are planning to use Twitter for their holiday shopping, and 68% have directly purchased something on Twitter because of a great idea or product featured on our platform. Twitter becomes an inspiration for their holiday shopping list.
Rachel: That's fantastic! Now, let's talk about some of the other products that Twitter has in the pipeline that might help small business owners.
Andrew: One of our products is Periscope, which allows you to easily stream and talk to a live audience. It's a great way for businesses to engage their community by showcasing events, new store openings, or product demos.
