Twitter for Small Business

Hello and welcome to another Hangout On Air with the Google Small Business Community! My name is Rachel Sterling. Today, we're wrapping up Social Media Month with the platform that uses the hashtag to capture the world's trending conversation. Let's give a warm Hangout welcome to Andrew Cog Leon Oh from Twitter. Thanks so much for joining us!

Andrew: Thank you so much for having me.

Rachel: Why don't you fill everybody in on what you do at Twitter?

Andrew: Sure! I am the Head of our Small and Medium Business Marketing Group at Twitter. Our job is to help small businesses be successful on our platform by finding their audience and figuring out ways to connect with them.

Rachel: That's great! We've had a lot of questions about Twitter from our community, so they'll be interested in learning from you. Now, let's start with a fun question. If you could have a hangout with anyone in the world, who would it be? And what's the most embarrassing question you would ask them?

Andrew: If it could be any person living or dead, I would definitely want to hang out with Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. As a girl who grew up on Sesame Street and the Muppet Show, it would be absolutely incredible to talk to the person who created all these characters. The embarrassing part about that is that I would ask if a couple of Muppets could come along to the Hangout. And if he said yes, I would probably ask about doing a Rainbow Connection sing-along. My favorite Muppet is Ralph, even though he's an underrepresented Muppet. I absolutely love him. Fraggle Rock was also one of my favorites.

Rachel: Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved Fraggle Rock too! Okay, let's get started with our conversation about Twitter today. It's a safe assumption that everybody knows what Twitter is, but people might not know who is actually on Twitter. Who are the small business owners reaching on Twitter if they use it?

Andrew: The value of our audience is that every day, millions of people show up on our platform to discover new content and share their interests. As a small business, it's a great opportunity to introduce what you do and have a deeper conversation with your audience. By creating a follower community that is interested in your services or products, you increase the likelihood of people responding to your direct response advertising. In fact, a study showed that 60% of people who follow an SMB on Twitter have gone on to purchase from that SMB.

Rachel: That's amazing! So small business owners need to realize that their customers are on Twitter, regardless of what they're selling. Their audiences are their next best loyal customers. They just need to figure out how to start that conversation with them.

Andrew: Exactly! It's a great opportunity, especially with the holidays coming up. We recently did a holiday research study that showed that more people, particularly in the US, will be spending on holidays this year. It's about $900, which is a 12% increase compared to last year. It's great news for small businesses because we found that 37% of respondents are planning to use Twitter for their holiday shopping, and 68% have directly purchased something on Twitter because of a great idea or product featured on our platform. Twitter becomes an inspiration for their holiday shopping list.

Rachel: That's fantastic! Now, let's talk about some of the other products that Twitter has in the pipeline that might help small business owners.

Andrew: One of our products is Periscope, which allows you to easily stream and talk to a live audience. It's a great way for businesses to engage their community by showcasing events, new store openings, or product demos. Another product is Vine, which complements tweets by bringing them to life with a six-second continuous loop video. Businesses can use Vine to show behind-the-scenes shots, small tips and tricks, or teasers for holiday displays. It's a simple way to capture attention and engage with your audience. The best part is that all you need is a smartphone.

Rachel: That's amazing! Now, let's talk about how small businesses can get started on Twitter. Where can they find resources and tips?

Andrew: I highly recommend going to business.twitter.com and checking out our resources page. We recently launched a resource hub called Tweet Smarter that provides step-by-step guidance on setting up and optimizing campaigns on Twitter. We also have a blog, blog.twitter.com/smallbusiness, where you can find success stories, quick tweet tips, and upcoming holiday research. These resources will help small businesses harness the power of Twitter and reach new customers.

Rachel: That's great! So small business owners, make sure to check out those resources and start using Twitter to connect with your audience. Thank you so much, Andrew, for joining us today and sharing your insights.

Andrew: Thank you for having me. It was a pleasure to be here.

Rachel: And thank you all for watching. Stay tuned for more Hangouts On Air with the Google Small Business Community.

Twitter for Small Business Marketing

Hi, happy Friday everyone! I have to go, it's Lea. I hope everyone had a great week and has a great weekend.

So, we just wanted to hop on really quickly and address a few questions we've received from people in the group about Twitter and using a content scheduler.

First off, someone asked if Twitter would even help their business. Well, the answer is yes! Twitter has a global reach, which is great for online businesses looking to reach more people. It also provides real-time news updates that can benefit your industry. We use Twitter to drive traffic to Facebook, as it's our biggest platform.

But let's talk about Twitter lists. They are a really great way to organize your content and make your Twitter game more effective. You can create lists for your competitors, top clients, and ideal clients. It helps with market research and strategy.

However, Twitter is a volume game. You need to constantly post to stay relevant. That's where a content scheduler, like DIY Social, comes in handy. It tells you how many times a day you need to post, which for Twitter is around 9-20 times a day.

Now, let's move on to the question about using a content scheduler. Leah already covered the benefits, but I just want to emphasize how much simpler it makes everything. It allows you to schedule content across all your social media channels, saving you time and making you more productive. DIY Social is a user-friendly scheduler that even provides templates if you're not good at design.

Next, we have a question about posting the same content to different social apps. In the past, it wasn't recommended, but now it's actually a good idea. People consume content differently, and posting the same content multiple times helps with touch points and making it register with your audience. A content scheduler can help determine the best times to post on each platform.

Lastly, someone asked if they should advertise on Pinterest. Absolutely! Pinterest is not just for wedding planning, it's actually the top shopping platform online. With 51 million monthly users, it's a great place to advertise your online business.

So, there you have it. Twitter and content scheduling can really benefit your business, and Pinterest is a platform you should definitely consider advertising on. If you have any more questions, feel free to message us or ask in the group. We'd love to hear your opinions and experiences with Twitter lists.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
