Watch Me Build An eCommerce Store From Scratch

hey everyone i'm tatiana and today i'm
going to be sharing with you my screen
so that you can watch me build an
e-commerce store from scratch
now if you've never built your own
website before it might feel a little
bit daunting but it's nothing like it
was 20 years ago the platforms today
they make it so simple with drag and
drop widgets really no coding is
necessary i promise
now in today's video i'm going to be
using big commerce as my platform of
choice i think that they are a fantastik
option and should definitely be part of
the conversation when considering wix or
shopify
bigcommerce isn't just for big
businesses they are for small and medium
level businesses with plenty of room to
grow into so if you're watching this
video today and you don't have a
business yet you're just thinking about
starting your business they can
definitely be a great fit for you
and they have a lot of different brands
that trust their platform such as ben
and jerry's
skull candy and plenty of more now one
of the reasons i really like bigcommerce
is because of their out-of-box value
compared to other e-commerce platforms
so for the membership fee there are a
lot of built-in tools that are included
that you would otherwise have to pay
extra for in the form of apps so
although the membership fee may seem a
little bit higher than other platforms
you have to factor in that you eliminate
the need to purchase a ton of different
apps that you also need to later manage
now one thing i'd like to highlight is
that with bigcommerce you get unlimited
staff accounts this is important for a
growing business because as your
business grows you're going to need to
make more hires you might hire someone
for customer support
they're going to need access to your
website to pull customer information to
look at order information maybe you hire
a developer who will definitely need
access to your website but you should
never be sharing your own login
information that should be yours and
they should have their own staff
accounts
now with other platforms such as shopify
shopify you're limited in how many staff
accounts you have i recall
i had two staff accounts with my basic
plan and i needed three staff accounts i
had to upgrade my entire membership just
to have three staff accounts so it
definitely does come in handy as your
business expands another thing worth
mentioning is that you are allowed to
offer multiple currencies with
bigcommerce you can accept payments in
over a hundred different currencies now
this is different than what some other
platforms offer where they allow the
customer to view the product price in
their currency
that's different than accepting payment
in their currency and so with
bigcommerce you have over a hundred
different currencies that you can accept
payment in and this results in a much
better customer experience also worth
mentioning bigcommerce has really fast
page loading speeds and great seo
opportunities
now something that's important to both
you and i as e-commerce sellers or
soon-to-be e-commerce sellers is that it
you can easily integrate multiple sales
channels
such as amazon ebay walmart facebook and
instagram shopping and even google
shopping so that's becomes really
valuable so it's in easy integration
with your big commerce store you can
also connect your offline business with
your online business
so if you want to accept payments
offline say you want to sell your
products at a local trade show or you
want to sell your products to certain
family and friends you can easily do
that
but with point of sale integration and
when looking at what directly affects
your bottom line you have to factor in
transaction fees bigcommerce does not
charge any additional transaction fees
for choosing your payment provider of
choice in fact they give you over 55
different payment provider options
unlike with shopify where if you do not
use shopify payments you do have to pay
additional transaction fees so if you

15-day trial you do not have to enter
your credit card information so it's
really easy to get started and that way
you can actually follow along with me in
this video today and the last thing i
will say before we get started is i am
not creating a real story here i'm
really just creating something super
basic just so that i can walk you
through some of the steps and provide
some explanations so without further ado
let's get started so all you do is you
click on the link here start your free
trial
and you just input your information
so i'm going to skip this part i'm going
to pause the video so i can input my
information
in private and then i'll see you in a
second all right so my store is now
being created i'm just waiting for this
to load it's asking me a few questions
um i'm going to skip this part for the
purposes of this video so it's not too
long but you can go ahead and answer
these questions it's just collecting a
little bit more information from you so
i'm going to say ask me later so this is
my store so this is my dashboard as you
can see here i named the store the
kindness store
on the right over here i can see how
many days are left in my free trial 15
days if i do select a plan that should
be extended to about a month
and then on the left panel over here
this is uh my navigation so this is
going to allow me to go to certain parts
of my store
i can view my store directly over here
this opens up in a new tab
so without doing anything to my store
bigcommerce has already created a
store for me i can completely customize
this but if i like this theme you know
there's not really that much to do other
than inserting my products and choosing
my categories
as you can see they've kind of minimally
built a store here already i actually
kind of like like the text and the font
that they use it's minimalistik and over
here you can see these are just demo
products um but this is how it would
look so we're going to start with
products because that's going to be the
most important piece of your store the
products in your store
over here these are just sample products
you can just go ahead and delete all of
these
by clicking select all and then trash
i'm not going to do that yet for the
purposes of this video i do want to show
you what a product would look like so
let's just click on one
so this is what the product will look
like here we have the title the price of
the product reviews if we want to
include that
skus blank
these are the different variations so a
variation of product could be size could
be color
you can select if you have any
variations chances are you might not
have any variations for your product
i'll show you how you could add those
variations in the event that you do
quantity add to cart add to wishlist
different images here you could also add
a video if you wanted which i would
highly recommend video is very powerful
you have to always remember that
you know people aren't necessarily used
to shopping online it's still relatively
new you and i might be very familiar
with it we shop online all the time but
for many people it's still a bit foreign
and a lot of people are used to that
experience of going to the store using
all of their senses to assess the
product to evaluate it and determine
whether or not they want to buy it but
when they are shopping online they're
very limited
they're limited to their
you know what they can see and so by
providing a video and showing the
product
in
you know three-dimensionally showing how
the product looks maybe even a review
video or a demonstration video it can
really help
the customer to make an educated uh
buying decision and and maybe even help
close a sale
down here we have the description
product information
and related products all right so let's
add our first product to the store
we can go over here click add
there's a lot of stuff that you can add
to your product listing not everything
is necessary only the things with the
red asterisks would be necessary the
rest you could omit or maybe perhaps
it's something you want to input later
and you just want to create a draft
listing for now so as you can see here
basic information description product
options storefront there's a lot of
information so let's go through it
together first we have to decide on the
product name
that's going to obviously depend on the
product you're selling and this event i
will
name my product
kindness
sweat shirt
now the skew of your product um that's
totally up to you you decide what your
sku is i do recommend
using skus it's going to help you to get
organized
i usually keep a spreadsheet on my
computer with all of my products and
their corresponding skus and the skus i
usually get directly from the
manufacturers from the suppliers it's
usually a bunch of numbers so i'm just
going to make up a bunch of numbers now
product type is it a physical product a
digital product in this case it would be
physical so it's good to note that you
can also deliver
digital products in this way so if you
want to sell an ebook whether you know
it's a short book for 10 bucks it's an
upsell you can still um sell that via
your website which is really cool and
you choose the price excluding tax let's
say
let's go with 38
now the brand in this case if you're
just the one brand you don't have to put
anything in there if you have multiple
sub brands that you're selling maybe
you're drop shipping then you would want
to insert that information there
the weight of the product this is
important because this is going to apply
for your shipping calculations on how
much it costs to ship your product so
you do want to make sure you have
accurate information not just the weight
of the product itself but the weight of
the product including its packaging
so i'm just going to say one
let's just go with
50 ounces
okay and then categories so again these
are just already from the template from
this bigcommerce store i can change
these categories i can add new
categories if you're not selling many
products it's not really necessary to
have categories on your store
if you do want to add a category you can
just name it here
sweatshirts
and you could choose if there was a
parent category
and so i'm going to add that
now the description of your product
it is important that you write a good
description this is going to help your
product in terms of
search engine optimization
you can insert some keywords in here if
there's certain keywords um long phrases
that you know that someone might be
searching for
then this can this can help your listing
show up in the google search so you want
to make sure that you're taking a little
time to work on the product description
so images and videos you definitely want
to
insert as many quality images as you
have because again you want to help the
customer feel comfortable to make that
buying decision if they feel like oh i
wish there were more photos so i could
see the back of it or the side of it
i wish there was a video so i could
really understand the product better you
don't you don't want to leave them
hanging so the more information about
your product you can provide the better
so i'm going to insert a photo here all
right so i have uploaded a few images
you can also add from url if you're
going to be doing some kind of drop
shipping you can also add description
for each image
i'm not going to you can choose which of
them you want to want to be the main
thumbnail
this is important because it's the first
image that people see i'm going to say
this one's going to be a thumbnail
and videos if you want to add videos
again that is an option and i i would
recommend it even if it's just like a
short video
product identifiers you can input more
information here
in this case probably most of you
watching this won't have this
information won't need this but again
you know big commerce what's great about
it is it's great for all size businesses
small medium and large and so as you
grow
more of this information will be
relevant to you and your growing
business
the pricing tiers here this is actually
really awesome i love that they include
this you don't find this with a lot of
e-commerce stores
this allows you to
give people discounts if they purchase
in bulk if you are doing wholesale
orders this is great so you don't have
to
you know this you can do it all on your
own website the wholesale orders
so you can go here default price
and if you want to do advanced pricing
you can say bulk discount and you can
add a tier
so say if someone buys two products then
maybe they get a 10 discount and if they
buy
three
they get a 15
discount and then you can go like okay
if you buy 100
products minimum 100
you could get a 30 discount you know so
if you do want to do wholesale this
platform allows for that
you can put the msrp
the sale price cost all of the stuff
okay inventory this is if you want to
track inventory i do recommend it
you can track on the product level or on
the variant level if you do have
variance then i would recommend doing it
on the variant level to get a more
accurate data so if you do have variance
this is where you would be inputting
that information
so we can add variance
so we could do add variant options so
let's say now with this sweatshirt i
have different colors i have red green
and blue and let's say i have pink as
well
i have uh it's out to the color that i'm
using so i'm going to make oat the
default color
but if i have different colors then i
can
use those variations i can add another
variation for sizes which i most likely
have if i'm going to be selling clothing
small medium large
we could do extra small
you could do extra large
and hopefully we have more sizes than
that because we all know that we are
not a one size fits all
but let's just say we do medium as the
default
and then you can save variance
there we go
so it will automatikally make
all the different variant options for
you so extra small of red extra small
green extra small blue extra small pink
etc
now you can also modify the price
so if say
an extra large cost you more to produce
to manufacture than an extra small which
is often the case because you're using
more material you could actually change
the price of each variant which is great
or you could just say whatever you know
i i
everyone gets the same price that's the
way i want to do my business maybe
there's something that you want to offer
as a customization maybe it there's a
check box that you want them to check
off something you want them to know to
verify that they understand
maybe you ask them hey is this a gift
and if it's gift you gift wrap it
or maybe you offer some sort of custom
print for the shirt so they could input
a name of someone that they want
printed on the shirt or whatever it is
so you can add that option here if you
would like i'm not going to
all right and now we are going to the
storefront so i'm going to just save
this for now it's good to save your work
while you're doing it because sometimes
you accidentally hit the back button and
we don't we don't want that to happen
it's happened too many times to me so i
like to save my work
as i'm working through it and we can now
go to the storefront back to the
storefront i'm just going to click over
here on storefront to navigate there
quickly over here your storefront
details you can insert some search
keywords i highly recommend doing this
again this is going to help people to
find your products
on your website so if you do have a big
product catalog and people are looking
for a partikular product that you were
advertising say on your instagram page
they just want to search it they don't
have to browse through all your product
catalog then you want to make sure that
there's certain keywords that are going
to help them to find that product so in
this case i could type in sweat shirt
i can type in oat i could type in uh be
kind because it says that on the
sweatshirt i could type in
unisex
any keywords that someone might use to
try and find this partikular product i
could also set this as a featured
product on my store if this is like my
best product and i want to make sure
that everyone sees it they don't get
lost in my product catalog i could
select this
sort order again if you do have a larger
product catalog how
how early do you want this to show up in
your store
if i say one it's going to be the first
product that's seen if i say say 20
maybe it's going to be pushed further
back
over here any kind of warranty
information that you want displayed
anything about availability so usually
ships within
48 hours
condition new so if you are selling used
refurbished
you could indicate that you don't have
to it is an option
or you could just people usually just
assume it's new if you don't indicate
that it's refurbished
or used
uh custom fields allow you to specify
additional information that will appear
on the product page so
this example here wine vintage
1998
anything specific that you want
displayed
you could add there in this case we
don't have to related products this is
optional so you saw this earlier um down
here related products so this is the
product page and then related products
it is recommended to to have this
because typically people would be
interested in something that is related
and it can be pretty powerful
weight and dimensions again this is
going to help you get accurate shipping
estimates wait you want to input this
information
accurately
but i'm not going to for the purpose of
this video how much you're going to
charge for shipping uh in this case i'm
just going to say free shipping now this
product is probably going to be
exclusively purchased on your online
store so you could select this however
if you do have a retail shop then you
could say that this product is coming
this product cannot be purchased in my
online store maybe you have this product
that is only available in your store but
you're sharing it online to show people
that it is available in your store if
you are doing this product for
pre-orders so you don't have the product
available yet you could select that
option this actually can be helpful for
just collecting data so if you're
thinking about launching a product not
quite sure if people would be interested
and you do have the store set up you
could just add the information about the
product share the product photos and
just see how many people would be
interested in purchasing the product so
you could put an expected release date
optional if you want to do that
but in this case we'll say purchase an
online store so over here this is if you
want to help
include customs information just be
aware that when you are shipping
products internationally there is a high
likelihood that the customer will have
to pay some form of duties
in order to receive the product and it's
not something that you can necessarily
estimate it's going to depend on where
they live and so all you can do is just
provide certain information like the hs
codes
which your supplier could provide for
you or you could figure out what that is
where the product is coming from so all
of this information will
help to uh determine how much duties
your customer will have to pay to
receive the product
so for example i live in canada i'm from
canada and i believe that it's something
like the product cost is over 80
then i have to pay duties on it if it's
under 80 then i'm not subject to paying
any duties something like that
i know in the us it's a lot more i think
it's like well over a hundred dollars if
you're ordering something
internationally that you don't have to
pay duties so each country is different
what i would recommend is that you just
make sure to let your customers know
that this is something to antikipate so
you should have a page for shipping and
returns on your website every website
does every e-commerce site does where
you have your shipping and return policy
and in there make sure you clearly let
your customers know that they could
antikipate
having to pay duties it depends on their
country so this would be for the uh
product products name as the page title
so it's going to help it to search show
up on
the search engine so you could further
optimize that
if you wanted to
meta description
also going to show up on the search
engine so if someone types in a kindness
sweatshirt or something related to these
keywords and your listing shows up
there's going to be a small meta
description so we could say oh
unisex kindness
switch shirt
and then this would be the product url
the string for this partikular product
you can change that of course so let's
go back to viewing our products and
let's just see what this looks like
now
and there it is so that is the kindness
sweatshirt
okay so i did not put input the
description but here you can see the
photos
it's actually quite cute isn't it and
then over here you can see the
colors to choose from
and the size
and quantity
and then add to cart
so easy enough right
okay so um over here this is the product
catalog of course you're going to want
to delete the products
that are
you know not your products so you can go
ahead and just delete them in bulk you
also have the option to hide products so
sometimes
it's good if a product maybe is
a product that you're no longer going to
sell but you want to keep the listing
there just in case you might choose to
sell it again at some point so you can
hide it without deleting it so this way
you don't have to recreate the product
listing in the event that you do choose
to sell it again
you also have to and the product
categories again you should make sure
that you are
deleting any product categories that
don't
apply to you and only adding relevant
ones
okay so i'm deleting the products in
those categories
over here you have your customers tab uh
this is not something i'm gonna be
sharing with you right now because we
don't have customers but essentially
this is going to allow you to see all of
your customers information in the event
that you know customer support there's
something that you need to manage this
is where you would do that
you also can see all of your order
information right here
this is really helpful you can filter
orders by awaiting payment awaiting
fulfillment shipment high risk
high risk meaning some orders depending
on how the payment was made sometimes
they have been assessed as high risk for
whatever reason and sometimes payments
don't go through so you might get like
an email from someone saying hey i'm not
sure if my order went through trying to
make a payment and you can see why it
was assessed as high risk and maybe
notify the customer have them contact
their bank you know try and figure it
out so this is where you'd see all the
order information you can also add an
order manually if you would like to
you can search you can export there's a
lot of information tracking numbers i
know my experience with having a store i
had so many people ask me for their
tracking numbers because sometimes the
tracking emails they didn't receive it
or it went to their spam folder or they
accidentally archived it so they'd be
asking for the tracking information
so you could send that to them easily
so we're not going to go
in depth with those because it's pretty
self-explanatory
the storefront over here i want to dive
into a little bit this is where you
really get to customize how your store
looks so as you know we have this
cornerstone light theme that's what
you've been that's what we've been
looking at over here it's i kind of i
kind of quite like it actually i like
how simple it is
you can see here the product categories
now have been removed here's the
shipping and return section which we'll
get to in a bit contact us and blog i
probably wouldn't put the contact just
right there sometimes it's better to
make it put it at the bottom of your
page or you're going to get a million
emails but at the same time you want to
be transparent you want to make sure
that the customer can contact you if
they do need help but you want to make
sure you give them help but as much as
you can on the website
maybe you have a q a section if you have
a little quiz if they need help with
sizing
whatever to avoid a huge influx of
emails so let's look at the different
themes that we can create now all right
so here we can edit the theme of the
store we can drag and drop any of these
widgets over here
so you can add images text banners
carousel video
so hero banner would look like this
which could be cool um
it's important that when someone's
visiting your site you don't have this
huge image without any call to action if
you're going to put an image great but
there should be a call to action nearby
so that they don't have to scroll down
before they can click on a button to buy
a product or whatever your cta is
so this could be great you could
customize what you want that image to be
so let's say i want
so there we go i just added the
shirt and added that image to it i could
change the text
spread kindness
but over here theme styles this is where
you really get to customize your store
customize all of the colors so if you
have certain branding colors and you
want to
stay consistent with those branding
colors you could
select them so for example
let's see here the body text color we
could do
i don't know let's say
something orangey over here you can see
how your website will look on different
devices so you have to keep in mind that
yes you might be creating your website
on your desktop computer but maybe
people are viewing it on a tablet or
their phone and you want to make sure
and i see it so many times and i'm
guilty of this where i totally neglect
optimizing my website for mobile
thankfully a lot of the themes will
automatikally optimize it so this theme
you can see here it's automatikally
changed how it looks
here on desktop you can see the menu
like this on mobile it's different it's
just you see this and then you have the
menu over here
um so it sometimes automatikally does it
but on some websites some ecommerce
platforms they don't or if you're using
like a landing page you have to optimize
it yourself but don't neglect it
basically because if you neglect it you
have to keep in mind like a lot of
people shop
when they're on their phones and so if
it's going to create for a negative
shopping experience because your website
has not been optimized for mobile
then you can you can lose a customer
you'll lose sales
so do keep that in mind and you can
toggle between all three of these to
just make sure that your store is
looking good you can also preview your
store here
see how it'll look
and go back to design
you can go to different pages so you can
get your shipping and returns page
this is right now what it looks like so
this would be an example of you would
have to you know come up with your own
return policy your own shipping policy
but if you want to
maybe add an image here or maybe
let's see here maybe yeah maybe an image
you can
change that image
um
let's make that a bit smaller
okay sure
okay and then you would edit this
the text of this and i'll show you where
to do that in a second and i don't like
this orange text i don't know why i
changed that so let's go back to black i
think that makes a bit more sense
or actually maybe gray's a bit softer
i'm kind of liking gray these days
but if i want to change the theme
maybe
change it for the heading
heading text color maybe
doing an orange color if that's my brand
just it's important to just stay
consistent with your branding whatever
those colors are for you
okay
there we go so you can see that orange
over there all right so let's move on
from here
you can save these changes so over here
i can go and i can further uh customize
so i can click on my logo if you do have
a logo and i recommend that you do get
one
you can
upload that and we can optimize the logo
for the theme
now the favicon this is uh what it's
going to look like
so
you know when you're searching for
something and on the top of your browser
there's usually a little logo on the
left
that's helpful because then when someone
is toggling between tabs
they can identify which one it belongs
to your store so it's nice to have a
favicon the home page carousel um so
that's if i do want to edit this
which i had actually removed then you
could do that editing here you could
choose what kind of image you would like
to add social media links you'll
definitely want to upload social media
links it's great to cross promote you're
probably going to be growing your social
media presence so you want to make sure
you add that there
people love looking at your instagram if
you're selling
you know t-shirts and you have an
e-commerce store they like to see other
customers rocking your products
if you've got a youtube channel that
could be helpful too so definitely want
to insert that
the other ones i'm not going to get into
other than gift certificate and
templates so
this is where you could you could set
this up so that you can send out a gift
certificate to your customers
say on their birthday if you're going to
collect their birthday information if
they do create an account or you could
also set it up so that people can
purchase gift certificates for specific
celebrations
so that's what it looks like gift
certificate the kindness store this is
what it would look like
and then over here in marketing
you can go to gift certificates
and
you can say yes enable gift certificates
and
you can set information about that
you can also do coupon codes
so here you could create a coupon code
say
20
off
your
next
purchase
or let's say 30 off your next purchase
thirty percent
uh minimum port purchase value seventy
five dollars
number of uses you could limit that if
you wanted to
if there are discounts in the cart you
don't want this to be applied you could
select this
so that they're not stacking discounts
and then they get their product for free
and you can put an expiry date if you
want
then we can say save
oh let's choose a category let's say
sweatshirts
save
so this could be really great for when
you're launching your product or
launching your store and you want to
create some coupon codes
give them to family friends influencers
you're going to be doing some influencer
marketing
so over here you can do
certain promotions if you want to do
automatik promotions
so for example if you want to give a
shipping discount free shipping if
someone pays you know say a hundred
dollars then the customer gets free
shipping
you can create that right here and you
can also send them abandoned cart emails
so if you want you can integrate your
store with an app like mailchimp it's
very popular app
and this way you can start doing some
email marketing
i would highly recommend doing this
because there's a good percentage of
people who will visit your store they'll
log into their account but they're not
going to end up buying the product they
will abandon cart and so you want to be
able to retarget them to contact them
again
and
ask them if they want to purchase and
you can actually automate this process
if it was manual it would take up a lot
of your time
so you can set that up here so you can
say in one hour and one day in two days
you can totally decide on how long you
want to wait in order to before you send
them the email you can have up to three
emails enabled at any one time
and you can customize
what you want the emails to
say you can also offer a coupon code
this is an effective strategy
if someone abandons cart they decided
not to purchase maybe it ended up being
more expensive than they were
antikipating you can say hey here get 10
off your order
and so that can be very effective in
terms of
saving those sales
you can also send emails
so this is really important because
you want to make sure that your
customers are seen in the loop regarding
their orders
especially when they place an order
so you want to make sure that you are
sending them automatik emails giving
them updates on their order on the
tracking information on when the order
was shipped
if a return was sent
when the return was approved so these
are all the different emails that you
could uh send out this is just a preview
of how the website is looking like now
it's super basic guys i did not really
customize much but i just wanted to give
you an idea of how easy it is to pop in
and customize the site there's a lot
more you can do okay so i haven't tapped
into all of that yet and to give you an
example
to show you how much you can do this is
a website skull candy that was built
with big commerce so look how nice this
website is they just have really great
quality images the layout is great
um here we can scroll down they're
really highlighting their products i
like how they just show the product and
when you hover over it you can then
click on the shop now button
they've got a cool theme going on so
it's just there's just it's just full of
pictures there's actually not a lot of
text
um and
i think that's that's pretty powerful
so this is what you could create with
bigcommerce
obviously
i went very basic here but i just wanted
to give you an idea of of how you can
easily
set up the site in a matter of minutes
like it really doesn't take long and you
can just stik with a free theme and you
can do a lot with it
especially if you just want a clean and
simple site so if you see the value in
