what is ads txt
Published on: January 28 2023 by pipiads
Hey guys, today I want to talk about a relatively new initiative in the digital advertising world called Ads txt. It is a way to help identify and prevent fraud in the industry. In this article, we will explore what Ads txt is and how it works.
What is Ads txt?
Ads txt is an initiative launched by the IAB to help identify authorized digital sellers. The digital advertising ecosystem is complex, with a number of different buyers, sellers, exchanges, networks, and DSPs. While this process is great, sometimes players who are not authorized to sell certain inventory or buy certain inventory are still doing so. This leads to mislabelling of inventory or fraudulent activity.
How does Ads txt work?
Ads txt creates the ability for publishers to let everyone know who is authorized to sell or buy their inventory. It uses a very basic text file, which publishers create and make public. This text file lists all the authorized digital sellers, and advertisers can use this information to identify fraudulent activity. If an advertiser sees a publisher coming through somebody who is not listed on their Ads txt file, it indicates that whoever is trying to sell that inventory does not have approval to do so.
Why is Ads txt important?
Ads txt is important because it helps to prevent fraudulent activity in the digital advertising world. It ensures that publishers have control over who can sell their inventory, and advertisers can be assured that they are dealing with authorized digital sellers. It also helps to prevent low-quality websites or blogs from mislabelling inventory as more reputable sources.
In summary, Ads txt is a simple but effective way to combat fraud in the digital advertising industry. It helps to ensure that publishers have control over who can sell their inventory, and advertisers can be confident that they are dealing with authorized digital sellers. As the industry continues to evolve, initiatives like Ads txt will become even more important in maintaining trust and transparency in the digital advertising ecosystem.

What is ADS.TXT?
Welcome to this instructional video on Ads.txt, where I, Louise, an Account Manager at Stream AM, will be answering some frequently asked questions about Ads.txt. Ads.txt stands for Authorized Digital Sellers and is a text file hosted on the publisher's server. Its purpose is to prevent any unauthorized advertising networks from buying as it lists all companies allowed to sell the publisher's advertising inventory. In this article, we will discuss how to find a website's Ads.txt file, its format, its importance, and more.
Finding a Website's Ads.txt File:
To find a website's Ads.txt file, you will need to type the route URL followed by ads.txt. This should bring up the website's Ads.txt file.
Ads.txt Format:
The Ads.txt entries should have the following format, separated by a comma with three defined fields. Firstly, the SSP or exchange name. Secondly, the seller account ID. And thirdly, we have the payment type. These three are all required, and the file should read as one record per line. There is an additional optional addition, the fourth entry is a certification Authority ID. Any writing directly after a pound symbol is considered a comment and is not crawled.
The Importance of Ads.txt:
Ads.txt is an initiative from the Interactive Advertising Bureau brought about to improve transparency in digital advertising. The files are publicly available and crawlable by exchanges, supply-side platforms known as S-ESPYs, and other buyers and third-party vendors. Google has been an advocate of Ads.txt, and as of October 2017, they only buy inventory from authorized partners within a website's Ads.txt file. Unauthorized selling is a huge problem for programmatic advertising, and Ads.txt weeds out those shady sellers as unmonitored allocation of inventory can have implications for a website's brand safety.
Ads.txt Validator:
We recommend checking your Ads.txt file to ensure it does not contain any incorrect or erroneous information as networks use a bot to crawl the Ads.txt file. Mistakes could be quite costly. There are plenty of Ads.txt validators available online to check this.
In conclusion, Ads.txt is an essential tool to prevent unauthorized advertising networks from buying advertising inventory. Its publicly available and crawlable format makes it transparent and ensures that websites are partnered with legitimate advertising networks. As an Account Manager at Stream AM, we highly recommend checking your Ads.txt file to ensure it is accurate and up-to-date. Please contact us today for any further advice on your Ads.txt file.
