00:00:00 | 00:00:03 | it's always better to do something you |
00:00:01 | 00:00:03 | actually care about that's what business |
00:00:03 | 00:00:05 | is |
00:00:03 | 00:00:07 | it's finding where the problems are and |
00:00:05 | 00:00:10 | learning how to solve those problems |
00:00:07 | 00:00:10 | for a profit now people want to buy from |
00:00:10 | 00:00:13 | people |
00:00:10 | 00:00:13 | and they want to hear stories and they |
00:00:13 | 00:00:15 | want to relate |
00:00:13 | 00:00:17 | to myself who are pretty much doubling |
00:00:15 | 00:00:20 | every month it was |
00:00:17 | 00:00:22 | very overwhelming and so i was it was |
00:00:20 | 00:00:24 | like my 30-day sales it just kept going |
00:00:22 | 00:00:26 | up and it kept going up i was at one |
00:00:24 | 00:00:27 | point doing five hundred dollars a day |
00:00:26 | 00:00:28 | pretty |
00:00:27 | 00:00:31 | like almost like a few times and it was |
00:00:28 | 00:00:34 | like whoa where's this even coming from |
00:00:31 | 00:00:37 | and then of course i went out of stok |
00:00:34 | 00:00:39 | i think the biggest advice i would give |
00:00:37 | 00:00:41 | is don't go for the trends |
00:00:39 | 00:00:43 | my sister actually also started an |
00:00:41 | 00:00:45 | amazon business |
00:00:43 | 00:00:47 | inside of the pandemic after i did mine |
00:00:45 | 00:00:50 | and hers failed miserably |
00:00:47 | 00:00:52 | and it wasn't because she's not a good |
00:00:50 | 00:00:54 | but she has her own another business now |
00:00:52 | 00:00:55 | that's doing very well it had |
00:00:54 | 00:00:57 | like it has nothing to do with the |
00:00:55 | 00:00:58 | person right like you have to |
00:00:57 | 00:01:00 | it's finding the product that makes |
00:00:58 | 00:01:04 | sense for you |
00:01:04 | 00:01:09 | hey everyone i'm tatiana and today i |
00:01:06 | 00:01:11 | have another amazon fba success story to |
00:01:09 | 00:01:13 | share with you |
00:01:11 | 00:01:14 | you're going to love danielle she's a 25 |
00:01:13 | 00:01:17 | year old |
00:01:14 | 00:01:17 | civil engineer and she loves what she |
00:01:17 | 00:01:19 | does |
00:01:17 | 00:01:21 | she loves her career but she wanted to |
00:01:19 | 00:01:21 | create a new stream of income for |
00:01:21 | 00:01:24 | herself |
00:01:21 | 00:01:25 | and she saw an opportunity to do so |
00:01:24 | 00:01:27 | during the pandemic |
00:01:25 | 00:01:29 | so that's when she discovered selling on |
00:01:27 | 00:01:32 | amazon and she launched her first |
00:01:29 | 00:01:34 | product in september of 2020 she now |
00:01:32 | 00:01:37 | does over 8 500 |
00:01:34 | 00:01:39 | a month in sales she's on track to |
00:01:37 | 00:01:40 | launching several new products opening |
00:01:39 | 00:01:42 | up a shopify store |
00:01:40 | 00:01:43 | and the cool thing is that the product |
00:01:42 | 00:01:46 | she decided to launch |
00:01:43 | 00:01:48 | was based on her own experience her own |
00:01:46 | 00:01:50 | experience trying to manage the damage |
00:01:48 | 00:01:53 | done to her own hair |
00:01:50 | 00:01:54 | so she has her own target market and so |
00:01:53 | 00:01:55 | she's really |
00:01:54 | 00:01:57 | good at marketing her product because |
00:01:55 | 00:01:58 | she is you know |
00:01:57 | 00:02:00 | the demographic that she's trying to |
00:01:58 | 00:02:01 | sell to |
00:02:00 | 00:02:03 | so in this interview you're going to be |
00:02:01 | 00:02:06 | learning a lot um |
00:02:03 | 00:02:08 | thank you so much danielle for taking |
00:02:06 | 00:02:10 | the time to be here today |
00:02:08 | 00:02:11 | thank you for being here to motivate and |
00:02:10 | 00:02:13 | inspire and share |
00:02:11 | 00:02:15 | uh your experience with others so that |
00:02:13 | 00:02:16 | they can learn from it |
00:02:15 | 00:02:18 | danielle why don't you get started by |
00:02:16 | 00:02:20 | just sharing with us a little bit about |
00:02:18 | 00:02:22 | yourself where you're from |
00:02:20 | 00:02:24 | and how you discovered selling on amazon |
00:02:22 | 00:02:24 | uh thanks for having me on here by the |
00:02:24 | 00:02:26 | way |
00:02:24 | 00:02:28 | so as you mentioned my name is danielle |
00:02:26 | 00:02:30 | i'm from southern california which is |
00:02:28 | 00:02:33 | where i currently live |
00:02:30 | 00:02:35 | and i'm a civil engineer i actually work |
00:02:33 | 00:02:38 | for a public agency |
00:02:35 | 00:02:40 | and i love being a civil engineer i went |
00:02:38 | 00:02:42 | to usc for my undergrad and then i went |
00:02:40 | 00:02:45 | to iowa for my master's |
00:02:42 | 00:02:48 | and which was an interesting experience |
00:02:45 | 00:02:49 | and i cut my hair a few years ago which |
00:02:48 | 00:02:51 | got me into |
00:02:49 | 00:02:52 | hair and then which eventually led me |
00:02:51 | 00:02:55 | into my business |
00:02:52 | 00:02:57 | and it's just been a whirlwind i'm the |
00:02:55 | 00:02:58 | youngest of three i'm only 25 years old |
00:02:57 | 00:03:00 | i don't know if you consider that |
00:02:58 | 00:03:01 | younger old you probably don't consider |
00:03:00 | 00:03:01 | it that young because you're pretty |
00:03:01 | 00:03:04 | young too |
00:03:01 | 00:03:05 | yeah we're roughly the same age i'm 27 |
00:03:04 | 00:03:07 | so we're |
00:03:05 | 00:03:08 | oh wow yeah well so that's interesting |
00:03:07 | 00:03:11 | so |
00:03:08 | 00:03:13 | how did cutting your hair lead you into |
00:03:11 | 00:03:14 | your business um tell us about how you |
00:03:13 | 00:03:16 | discovered |
00:03:14 | 00:03:19 | online business and then how did you |
00:03:16 | 00:03:22 | discover selling on amazon |
00:03:19 | 00:03:23 | yeah so uh when i was i think a junior |
00:03:22 | 00:03:26 | in college |
00:03:23 | 00:03:28 | yeah i was in it was about 2016. i had a |
00:03:26 | 00:03:29 | lot of damage on my hair it was |
00:03:28 | 00:03:30 | completely breaking off i have really |
00:03:29 | 00:03:34 | fine hair so |
00:03:30 | 00:03:36 | it just it's very sensitive and i had it |
00:03:34 | 00:03:37 | straightened a couple of times and it |
00:03:36 | 00:03:39 | started falling out so i had to cut it |
00:03:37 | 00:03:43 | all off i cut it to about one |
00:03:39 | 00:03:46 | inch and it became this |
00:03:43 | 00:03:47 | like whole hair journey for me because |
00:03:46 | 00:03:49 | there were so much |
00:03:47 | 00:03:50 | tutorials and stuff on youtube at that |
00:03:49 | 00:03:51 | point |
00:03:50 | 00:03:53 | and so that's when i really started to |
00:03:51 | 00:03:56 | learn about my hair learn how to care |
00:03:53 | 00:03:59 | for my hair and it got me really |
00:03:56 | 00:04:01 | passionate about the industry as a whole |
00:03:59 | 00:04:03 | and so at one point i actually was |
00:04:01 | 00:04:05 | making my own hair care products |
00:04:03 | 00:04:06 | and then eventually it was just like |
00:04:05 | 00:04:09 | when i was looking at |
00:04:06 | 00:04:11 | starting a business and i can tok about |
00:04:09 | 00:04:14 | that journey also |
00:04:11 | 00:04:15 | okay but i i kept i kept thinking i |
00:04:14 | 00:04:17 | should probably try to do something |
00:04:15 | 00:04:19 | around here because i'm interested in it |
00:04:17 | 00:04:21 | right and i saw that in your videos as |
00:04:19 | 00:04:23 | well you said it's it's always better to |
00:04:21 | 00:04:24 | do something you actually care about |
00:04:23 | 00:04:27 | because i mean if you think about it you |
00:04:24 | 00:04:28 | are already investing so much time into |
00:04:27 | 00:04:29 | learning about your hair you probably |
00:04:28 | 00:04:32 | read |
00:04:29 | 00:04:34 | dozens of artikles watched so many |
00:04:32 | 00:04:35 | videos invested so much time into |
00:04:34 | 00:04:38 | figuring out how to |
00:04:35 | 00:04:39 | recover or heal your hair from the |
00:04:38 | 00:04:41 | damage |
00:04:39 | 00:04:42 | and now that's knowledge that you have |
00:04:41 | 00:04:44 | that you could |
00:04:42 | 00:04:46 | put to work and put to good use because |
00:04:44 | 00:04:48 | chances are you're not the only one |
00:04:46 | 00:04:50 | who's dealing with this challenge |
00:04:48 | 00:04:52 | we're not all that unique and if we have |
00:04:50 | 00:04:54 | a challenge and and that's what that's |
00:04:52 | 00:04:56 | what business is right it's it's |
00:04:54 | 00:04:58 | it's finding where the problems are and |
00:04:56 | 00:05:02 | learning how to solve those problems |
00:04:58 | 00:05:03 | for a profit and so 100 so you you |
00:05:02 | 00:05:07 | started to make your own products |
00:05:03 | 00:05:09 | so what what were you making yeah it was |
00:05:07 | 00:05:10 | about probably 2017. i was making like |
00:05:09 | 00:05:12 | you know deep conditioner |
00:05:10 | 00:05:14 | styling products i still make a lot of |
00:05:12 | 00:05:16 | my own stuff but i i sold it |
00:05:14 | 00:05:18 | for like maybe a summer right before i |
00:05:16 | 00:05:22 | went to graduate school |
00:05:18 | 00:05:25 | and i realized i really hated |
00:05:22 | 00:05:26 | having to kind of get up and do |
00:05:25 | 00:05:27 | something because someone placed an |
00:05:26 | 00:05:29 | order |
00:05:27 | 00:05:30 | oh it was like i don't like that and so |
00:05:29 | 00:05:32 | it makes a lot of sense now how i |
00:05:30 | 00:05:33 | eventually got to what i'm doing because |
00:05:32 | 00:05:35 | it's very passive i don't know |
00:05:33 | 00:05:37 | i don't have to respond when i get an |
00:05:35 | 00:05:39 | order so okay so you made your own |
00:05:37 | 00:05:40 | products and you were just selling them |
00:05:39 | 00:05:43 | kind of in your house or |
00:05:40 | 00:05:44 | like with friends and family or at like |
00:05:43 | 00:05:46 | like markets or |
00:05:44 | 00:05:48 | where were you selling these um |
00:05:46 | 00:05:50 | conditioners i was selling them on etsy |
00:05:48 | 00:05:52 | and then i also had my own shopify store |
00:05:50 | 00:05:54 | oh wow and etsy actually i should have |
00:05:52 | 00:05:56 | just done etsy it was like i learned a |
00:05:54 | 00:05:58 | lot from that actually |
00:05:56 | 00:06:00 | because i kind of did too much too soon |
00:05:58 | 00:06:03 | right i was trying to |
00:06:00 | 00:06:04 | so hard to establish my credibility and |
00:06:03 | 00:06:06 | be like i'm a real business so i should |
00:06:04 | 00:06:08 | have a shopify store and |
00:06:06 | 00:06:09 | oh i'm gonna do facebook ads even though |
00:06:08 | 00:06:11 | i know nothing about them |
00:06:09 | 00:06:13 | right but all of my business usually |
00:06:11 | 00:06:13 | came from etsy and it was so simple |
00:06:13 | 00:06:14 | there |
00:06:13 | 00:06:16 | and it's like wow if i had just started |
00:06:14 | 00:06:17 | here i wouldn't have spent as much money |
00:06:16 | 00:06:19 | at the beginning |
00:06:17 | 00:06:20 | and it could have been a much more |
00:06:19 | 00:06:22 | natural growth okay |
00:06:20 | 00:06:24 | so so your introduction with your |
00:06:22 | 00:06:27 | business was selling on etsy |
00:06:24 | 00:06:28 | um but the challenge of that was that |
00:06:27 | 00:06:30 | whenever you would receive an order |
00:06:28 | 00:06:32 | you'd have to like get up and process |
00:06:30 | 00:06:33 | that order and |
00:06:32 | 00:06:35 | you know it doesn't matter where you are |
00:06:33 | 00:06:37 | what time of the day it is you know |
00:06:35 | 00:06:38 | you got to get up and do that so that |
00:06:37 | 00:06:41 | was a bit inconvenient |
00:06:38 | 00:06:43 | i did not like that no i did not totally |
00:06:41 | 00:06:44 | i was doing that for a period of time |
00:06:43 | 00:06:47 | myself not on |
00:06:44 | 00:06:48 | etsy but um i used to sell like |
00:06:47 | 00:06:50 | fulfilled by merchant |
00:06:48 | 00:06:52 | and i would have to process all of my |
00:06:50 | 00:06:53 | own orders and |
00:06:52 | 00:06:56 | you just at a certain like when you're |
00:06:53 | 00:06:56 | small scale okay it's fine but if you're |
00:06:56 | 00:06:58 | actually |
00:06:56 | 00:07:00 | you know your business is growing it's |
00:06:58 | 00:07:00 | not very sustainable and then you start |
00:07:00 | 00:07:02 | to realize |
00:07:00 | 00:07:03 | that there's got to be an alternative |
00:07:02 | 00:07:07 | solution |
00:07:03 | 00:07:08 | so is that what you discovered yeah so i |
00:07:07 | 00:07:09 | had stopped that especially if i was in |
00:07:08 | 00:07:10 | graduate school i just didn't have the |
00:07:09 | 00:07:13 | time for it right |
00:07:10 | 00:07:16 | and then as probably |
00:07:13 | 00:07:16 | 20 in 2020 i think before the pandemic |
00:07:16 | 00:07:19 | started |
00:07:16 | 00:07:21 | i really wanted some passive income that |
00:07:19 | 00:07:23 | was really important to me |
00:07:21 | 00:07:24 | i just felt like it could be really good |
00:07:23 | 00:07:26 | even if i could just have an extra |
00:07:24 | 00:07:27 | thousand dollars a month it's like wow |
00:07:26 | 00:07:28 | what could i do with an extra thousand |
00:07:27 | 00:07:30 | dollars a month |
00:07:28 | 00:07:32 | and so i started looking at different |
00:07:30 | 00:07:34 | things i was looking at getting atms |
00:07:32 | 00:07:35 | into dispensaries i live in california |
00:07:34 | 00:07:38 | so it was like oh an atm |
00:07:35 | 00:07:39 | that's a good idea that's a good idea so |
00:07:38 | 00:07:41 | i sent a bunch of emails out to all of |
00:07:39 | 00:07:41 | these dispensaries that had just been |
00:07:41 | 00:07:44 | permitted |
00:07:41 | 00:07:48 | no one emailed me back okay |
00:07:44 | 00:07:49 | i had looked at doing like leggings on |
00:07:48 | 00:07:52 | amazon at this point i knew nothing |
00:07:49 | 00:07:55 | about amazon but i was like toking to |
00:07:52 | 00:07:58 | developers in india and being like okay |
00:07:55 | 00:08:01 | how can i make it like organic bamboo |
00:07:58 | 00:08:03 | threading or like you know just very |
00:08:01 | 00:08:05 | just trying to get the wheels turning |
00:08:03 | 00:08:07 | and then i looked at audio books |
00:08:05 | 00:08:09 | recording audio books for the amazons |
00:08:07 | 00:08:10 | ecx |
00:08:09 | 00:08:12 | i mean i was really i was throwing a lot |
00:08:10 | 00:08:14 | of darts at the board |
00:08:12 | 00:08:16 | first yeah very creative i love that |
00:08:14 | 00:08:16 | though like that's the entrepreneurial |
00:08:16 | 00:08:19 | spirit |
00:08:16 | 00:08:19 | is to you know think of different ideas |
00:08:19 | 00:08:21 | and not |
00:08:19 | 00:08:23 | everything you follow through with |
00:08:21 | 00:08:25 | because it might seem like a great idea |
00:08:23 | 00:08:26 | but then you do more market research and |
00:08:25 | 00:08:28 | you realize |
00:08:26 | 00:08:30 | it doesn't really work that way i had a |
00:08:28 | 00:08:31 | similar idea once that i was really |
00:08:30 | 00:08:32 | excited about i was |
00:08:31 | 00:08:34 | thinking like i want to create more |
00:08:32 | 00:08:37 | passive income why don't i |
00:08:34 | 00:08:38 | rent these and i my challenge was you |
00:08:37 | 00:08:40 | know i would go out at night and i'd be |
00:08:38 | 00:08:41 | wearing high heels |
00:08:40 | 00:08:43 | and by the end of the night my feet were |
00:08:41 | 00:08:44 | so sore i'd be walking barefoot and i |
00:08:43 | 00:08:46 | was like |
00:08:44 | 00:08:47 | i need to have these you know those fast |
00:08:46 | 00:08:50 | flats those |
00:08:47 | 00:08:51 | flats that roll up and i thought well |
00:08:50 | 00:08:53 | these need to be available |
00:08:51 | 00:08:55 | in the nightclubs or they need to be |
00:08:53 | 00:08:58 | available in the bars or places where |
00:08:55 | 00:09:00 | girls go and wear high heels and so i |
00:08:58 | 00:09:02 | thought a vending machine that sells |
00:09:00 | 00:09:03 | these fast flats or these types of flats |
00:09:02 | 00:09:06 | that roll up |
00:09:03 | 00:09:07 | in these types of environments where you |
00:09:06 | 00:09:09 | know women would wear |
00:09:07 | 00:09:11 | high heels and and then later get drunk |
00:09:09 | 00:09:13 | and then want to take them off |
00:09:11 | 00:09:14 | i thought oh that makes perfect sense |
00:09:13 | 00:09:16 | and i ended up doing more research and |
00:09:14 | 00:09:19 | realized it just |
00:09:16 | 00:09:22 | didn't it wasn't as easy as it sounded |
00:09:19 | 00:09:24 | it was a good idea though |
00:09:22 | 00:09:26 | yeah well that's why it's like you gotta |
00:09:24 | 00:09:28 | have a lot of ideas right because it's |
00:09:26 | 00:09:31 | not every idea that is going to |
00:09:28 | 00:09:31 | produce the results and so you know the |
00:09:31 | 00:09:34 | more the better |
00:09:31 | 00:09:36 | it was definitely a learning experience |
00:09:34 | 00:09:38 | i think i started seeing videos |
00:09:36 | 00:09:39 | on youtube like ads because i started |
00:09:38 | 00:09:41 | looking at these other videos about |
00:09:39 | 00:09:43 | diff ways you can especially at this |
00:09:41 | 00:09:45 | point the pandemic had started so |
00:09:43 | 00:09:47 | there was a lot of new content about |
00:09:45 | 00:09:49 | ways to get pat more income |
00:09:47 | 00:09:50 | and so then i started getting targeted |
00:09:49 | 00:09:54 | right |
00:09:50 | 00:09:55 | right and i came across uh amazon |
00:09:54 | 00:09:58 | and so then i started learning more |
00:09:55 | 00:09:59 | about amazon and fba |
00:09:58 | 00:10:01 | and i believe that's when i found your |
00:09:59 | 00:10:02 | channel and then i also found jungle |
00:10:01 | 00:10:04 | scout |
00:10:02 | 00:10:05 | oh cool and so it was pretty much your |
00:10:04 | 00:10:07 | channel and jungle scout |
00:10:05 | 00:10:09 | that were really my complete foundation |
00:10:07 | 00:10:10 | and building blocks of getting into |
00:10:09 | 00:10:11 | amazon fba |
00:10:10 | 00:10:13 | happy to hear that they've got a |
00:10:11 | 00:10:14 | wonderful channel they have very |
00:10:13 | 00:10:16 | educational videos |
00:10:14 | 00:10:17 | they were they were really helpful |
00:10:16 | 00:10:19 | especially at the beginning because |
00:10:17 | 00:10:22 | there's just so much you don't know |
00:10:19 | 00:10:24 | so i first started with um like these |
00:10:22 | 00:10:26 | smoking pipes and i don't smoke i don't |
00:10:24 | 00:10:29 | know why all this stuff |
00:10:26 | 00:10:30 | is really i don't even smoke but i'm in |
00:10:29 | 00:10:32 | california so i know they're such a |
00:10:30 | 00:10:33 | demand |
00:10:32 | 00:10:36 | so i was looking at these silicone |
00:10:33 | 00:10:38 | smoking pipes i did everything |
00:10:36 | 00:10:39 | i placed the first order and they were |
00:10:38 | 00:10:41 | like in |
00:10:39 | 00:10:43 | like deposit down and everything and |
00:10:41 | 00:10:44 | then i realized i couldn't sell them on |
00:10:43 | 00:10:46 | amazon |
00:10:44 | 00:10:48 | they started removing all of those types |
00:10:46 | 00:10:52 | of related products |
00:10:48 | 00:10:56 | right right yeah so then i moved on to |
00:10:52 | 00:10:57 | sewing needle racks i moved on to |
00:10:56 | 00:10:59 | so did you owe some money from that |
00:10:57 | 00:11:00 | first order were you able to get a |
00:10:59 | 00:11:02 | reason |
00:11:00 | 00:11:03 | we lost no i lost the money for the |
00:11:02 | 00:11:07 | initial |
00:11:03 | 00:11:10 | deposit i think it was like 345 dollars |
00:11:07 | 00:11:11 | yeah and also all the like logo design |
00:11:10 | 00:11:15 | and packaging design for that |
00:11:11 | 00:11:17 | company name it was just |
00:11:15 | 00:11:18 | but it was just like it was fine it was |
00:11:17 | 00:11:19 | only at least it was only a few hundred |
00:11:18 | 00:11:20 | dollars |
00:11:19 | 00:11:22 | i didn't do like an order of a thousand |
00:11:20 | 00:11:23 | units or something i did a very small |
00:11:22 | 00:11:27 | initial order |
00:11:23 | 00:11:28 | yeah that's good and then i |
00:11:27 | 00:11:30 | i watched i was watching a bunch of |
00:11:28 | 00:11:31 | webinars where they would try to sell |
00:11:30 | 00:11:33 | you something but at the beginning they |
00:11:31 | 00:11:34 | would give you maybe like 20 minutes of |
00:11:33 | 00:11:36 | actual content |
00:11:34 | 00:11:38 | and so i was watching a lot of those |
00:11:36 | 00:11:39 | just trying to figure out like |
00:11:38 | 00:11:41 | maybe just if i can get any types of |
00:11:39 | 00:11:43 | helpful hints i just need something to |
00:11:41 | 00:11:43 | connect because i could feel it was so |
00:11:43 | 00:11:46 | close |
00:11:43 | 00:11:48 | right so close right and so i kept |
00:11:46 | 00:11:50 | coming back to hair i'm like maybe if i |
00:11:48 | 00:11:53 | can just do something around here |
00:11:50 | 00:11:55 | and that's when i found the extra long |
00:11:53 | 00:11:58 | satin bonnet |
00:11:55 | 00:12:02 | and it wasn't like a super |
00:11:58 | 00:12:04 | sexy item it didn't have like super low |
00:12:02 | 00:12:07 | competition and super high demand |
00:12:04 | 00:12:09 | but it was niche enough to where it |
00:12:07 | 00:12:12 | wasn't super saturated |
00:12:09 | 00:12:12 | and i knew i could demonstrate it which |
00:12:12 | 00:12:14 | i remember |
00:12:12 | 00:12:15 | which is what you always said on your |
00:12:14 | 00:12:17 | channel something you can demonstrate or |
00:12:15 | 00:12:19 | you can build a brand around |
00:12:17 | 00:12:20 | and that's what i was really going for |
00:12:19 | 00:12:22 | right yeah it is an advantage |
00:12:20 | 00:12:23 | like not you know that's the thing is |
00:12:22 | 00:12:25 | people ask me all the time do i have to |
00:12:23 | 00:12:27 | be the face of my brand |
00:12:25 | 00:12:29 | and the answer is absolutely not most |
00:12:27 | 00:12:30 | amazon sellers are not the face of their |
00:12:29 | 00:12:32 | brands |
00:12:30 | 00:12:34 | i just happen to decide that i'm okay |
00:12:32 | 00:12:36 | with that and i knew it would be an |
00:12:34 | 00:12:38 | advantage so if you are willing to do |
00:12:36 | 00:12:40 | that if you are willing to kind of model |
00:12:38 | 00:12:42 | your product demonstrate your product |
00:12:40 | 00:12:44 | then it is going to be an advantage for |
00:12:42 | 00:12:45 | you but you don't need to do that to |
00:12:44 | 00:12:48 | experience success |
00:12:45 | 00:12:49 | so it's great that you kind of you |
00:12:48 | 00:12:50 | decided that i'm going to be comfortable |
00:12:49 | 00:12:53 | enough to like |
00:12:50 | 00:12:54 | share this and demonstrate it because |
00:12:53 | 00:12:56 | i'm sure that |
00:12:54 | 00:12:57 | was very advantageous because when you |
00:12:56 | 00:12:59 | look at your competitors you see that |
00:12:57 | 00:13:01 | most people are not doing that they |
00:12:59 | 00:13:03 | don't have a face of the brand |
00:13:01 | 00:13:05 | or and so that gives you that little bit |
00:13:03 | 00:13:06 | of an edge that other people don't have |
00:13:05 | 00:13:09 | yeah it was really helpful because i'm |
00:13:06 | 00:13:12 | my target customer |
00:13:09 | 00:13:14 | i'm who i'm selling to and so when i see |
00:13:12 | 00:13:16 | all my competitors and they have a lot |
00:13:14 | 00:13:18 | of like stok photos and then they'll |
00:13:16 | 00:13:20 | just put their bonnet on or something |
00:13:18 | 00:13:22 | so automatikally my listing is already |
00:13:20 | 00:13:24 | standing out because it's a new face |
00:13:22 | 00:13:26 | i also have my sister my sister's |
00:13:24 | 00:13:28 | actually my main listing image |
00:13:26 | 00:13:29 | oh wow because i see i told her my money |
00:13:28 | 00:13:32 | maker so she's the main ones |
00:13:29 | 00:13:33 | i'm also in it a couple of her friends |
00:13:32 | 00:13:34 | have been in it a couple of my friends |
00:13:33 | 00:13:35 | have been in it i've just had different |
00:13:34 | 00:13:38 | models but they're |
00:13:35 | 00:13:39 | all very different showing them using |
00:13:38 | 00:13:42 | the product |
00:13:39 | 00:13:45 | and just it's been really helpful |
00:13:42 | 00:13:46 | yeah that's that's awesome so okay so |
00:13:45 | 00:13:49 | you discovered this |
00:13:46 | 00:13:52 | bonnet um and then did you |
00:13:49 | 00:13:53 | source it overseas or locally and how |
00:13:52 | 00:13:54 | did you find |
00:13:53 | 00:13:58 | like was that was there any challenges |
00:13:54 | 00:14:00 | with sourcing or was that pretty easy |
00:13:58 | 00:14:02 | yeah it was difficult because also what |
00:14:00 | 00:14:05 | i learned once again on your channel |
00:14:02 | 00:14:07 | was you should look at the bad reviews |
00:14:05 | 00:14:09 | of your competitors |
00:14:07 | 00:14:10 | think and then also i use the product so |
00:14:09 | 00:14:13 | i know what problems i have |
00:14:10 | 00:14:15 | with the existing products and so i was |
00:14:13 | 00:14:16 | custom designing a product that didn't |
00:14:15 | 00:14:18 | exist |
00:14:16 | 00:14:20 | and so i'm sitting there trying to |
00:14:18 | 00:14:22 | explain to them what exactly i'm looking |
00:14:20 | 00:14:25 | for i don't know how to draw |
00:14:22 | 00:14:26 | i wasn't gonna pay for someone to design |
00:14:25 | 00:14:28 | it because i would still have to do the |
00:14:26 | 00:14:29 | same thing with them so either way i was |
00:14:28 | 00:14:30 | gonna have to figure out a way to |
00:14:29 | 00:14:32 | verbalize exactly |
00:14:30 | 00:14:34 | what i was looking for and it was really |
00:14:32 | 00:14:34 | difficult i had reached out to quite a |
00:14:34 | 00:14:36 | few |
00:14:34 | 00:14:38 | and i got nowhere because they didn't |
00:14:36 | 00:14:40 | understand what i was asking i had |
00:14:38 | 00:14:41 | actually kind of given up there was a |
00:14:40 | 00:14:44 | couple of weeks i just wasn't toking |
00:14:41 | 00:14:47 | any suppliers i was so frustrated |
00:14:44 | 00:14:49 | and then this one person responded and |
00:14:47 | 00:14:51 | she got it |
00:14:49 | 00:14:52 | and so then that kind of reignited the |
00:14:51 | 00:14:54 | light i didn't end up going with that |
00:14:52 | 00:14:55 | supplier but then it was like okay so |
00:14:54 | 00:14:58 | then i toked to a couple of more |
00:14:55 | 00:14:59 | and then i had a sample and it was just |
00:14:58 | 00:15:01 | like |
00:14:59 | 00:15:02 | everything finally came together so i i |
00:15:01 | 00:15:04 | was on alibaba |
00:15:02 | 00:15:07 | i kept everything on alibaba i messaged |
00:15:04 | 00:15:09 | them through the alibaba messenger |
00:15:07 | 00:15:10 | i did my orders through trade assurance |
00:15:09 | 00:15:13 | which really helped i had to get a |
00:15:10 | 00:15:14 | refund at one point for a sample because |
00:15:13 | 00:15:16 | like there was a whole |
00:15:14 | 00:15:18 | it was a whole thing and so it just |
00:15:16 | 00:15:19 | helped provide a lot of like |
00:15:18 | 00:15:21 | lower risks yes it just gave you a lot |
00:15:19 | 00:15:23 | of security and it was |
00:15:21 | 00:15:25 | really easy to streamline everything |
00:15:23 | 00:15:26 | yeah yeah that's so that's a great |
00:15:25 | 00:15:28 | lesson just |
00:15:26 | 00:15:29 | you have to be persistent because you |
00:15:28 | 00:15:30 | had an idea of what it is that you |
00:15:29 | 00:15:32 | wanted |
00:15:30 | 00:15:33 | and it was important too because you |
00:15:32 | 00:15:34 | knew that you had to differentiate |
00:15:33 | 00:15:36 | yourself |
00:15:34 | 00:15:37 | from the other people selling bonnets on |
00:15:36 | 00:15:39 | amazon you don't just |
00:15:37 | 00:15:41 | like and that's a really important tip |
00:15:39 | 00:15:42 | is is looking at the competitors looking |
00:15:41 | 00:15:44 | at their |
00:15:42 | 00:15:45 | negative reviews and their positive but |
00:15:44 | 00:15:46 | taking the negative reviews |
00:15:45 | 00:15:48 | okay is there anything that i could |
00:15:46 | 00:15:49 | improve it doesn't have to be a huge |
00:15:48 | 00:15:51 | improvement |
00:15:49 | 00:15:52 | but just something minor that would make |
00:15:51 | 00:15:54 | a significant |
00:15:52 | 00:15:55 | difference in the experience of the |
00:15:54 | 00:15:58 | customer |
00:15:55 | 00:16:01 | and so that's what you had found and yes |
00:15:58 | 00:16:02 | most many suppliers will say no or they |
00:16:01 | 00:16:03 | won't respond |
00:16:02 | 00:16:06 | because they don't have that |
00:16:03 | 00:16:07 | relationship with you and |
00:16:06 | 00:16:10 | it can be frustrating but you were |
00:16:07 | 00:16:12 | persistent enough to continue |
00:16:10 | 00:16:13 | requesting this from suppliers and |
00:16:12 | 00:16:15 | eventually someone |
00:16:13 | 00:16:16 | actually understood what you were saying |
00:16:15 | 00:16:20 | and took action with that |
00:16:16 | 00:16:22 | and that led you to getting your sample |
00:16:20 | 00:16:24 | and so that's just kind of a great |
00:16:22 | 00:16:25 | lesson because i think that a lot of |
00:16:24 | 00:16:26 | people are challenged with contacting |
00:16:25 | 00:16:29 | suppliers |
00:16:26 | 00:16:29 | that they find it very frustrating and |
00:16:29 | 00:16:31 | um |
00:16:29 | 00:16:32 | sometimes they don't have any luck with |
00:16:31 | 00:16:34 | it but it is it's just |
00:16:32 | 00:16:36 | a numbers game it's like the more you |
00:16:34 | 00:16:38 | contact the higher |
00:16:36 | 00:16:39 | the likelihood of you having success |
00:16:38 | 00:16:43 | with any one of those |
00:16:39 | 00:16:45 | suppliers so you got your samples and |
00:16:43 | 00:16:46 | then i guess did you like your samples |
00:16:45 | 00:16:47 | and then you placed your order what |
00:16:46 | 00:16:49 | happened next |
00:16:47 | 00:16:50 | yeah i had a couple one of the supplier |
00:16:49 | 00:16:52 | i'd originally planned to go with |
00:16:50 | 00:16:54 | because i felt like we connected you |
00:16:52 | 00:16:56 | know it was like okay yes |
00:16:54 | 00:16:57 | but then it was like the stitching was |
00:16:56 | 00:17:00 | kind of off |
00:16:57 | 00:17:01 | it didn't last very long and then this |
00:17:00 | 00:17:02 | other supplier |
00:17:01 | 00:17:04 | where she was kind of going back and |
00:17:02 | 00:17:05 | forth with me i was saying i wanted this |
00:17:04 | 00:17:07 | specifically and she was saying well |
00:17:05 | 00:17:09 | have you thought about this |
00:17:07 | 00:17:10 | and instead of just kind of writing her |
00:17:09 | 00:17:11 | off which could have been a very real |
00:17:10 | 00:17:12 | thing like |
00:17:11 | 00:17:14 | no you don't know what you're toking |
00:17:12 | 00:17:16 | about i want to do what i want |
00:17:14 | 00:17:18 | she sent me both i was like you know |
00:17:16 | 00:17:19 | what i want to try it i want to see what |
00:17:18 | 00:17:20 | you're saying |
00:17:19 | 00:17:22 | and inmates and it was she was right |
00:17:20 | 00:17:24 | [Laughter] |
00:17:22 | 00:17:26 | she was 100 right it was a better |
00:17:24 | 00:17:28 | decision and so the product |
00:17:26 | 00:17:29 | was really good so i made a quite a few |
00:17:28 | 00:17:31 | changes to the |
00:17:29 | 00:17:32 | typical satin bonnet that you sleep with |
00:17:31 | 00:17:35 | at night |
00:17:32 | 00:17:36 | and but one thing i started off with the |
00:17:35 | 00:17:38 | single layer just a single layer of |
00:17:36 | 00:17:41 | satin |
00:17:38 | 00:17:42 | i ordered i think 300 bonnets and |
00:17:41 | 00:17:45 | what happened was because it was only |
00:17:42 | 00:17:46 | one layer it would start ripping at the |
00:17:45 | 00:17:48 | seams |
00:17:46 | 00:17:50 | so that was another big mistake i made |
00:17:48 | 00:17:52 | at the beginning |
00:17:50 | 00:17:54 | because so usually it was fine but |
00:17:52 | 00:17:56 | sometimes it would just |
00:17:54 | 00:17:58 | it would just rip and so it was |
00:17:56 | 00:17:59 | incredibly overwhelming incredibly |
00:17:58 | 00:18:02 | stressful |
00:17:59 | 00:18:03 | incredibly anxiety causing because all |
00:18:02 | 00:18:04 | i'm thinking is |
00:18:03 | 00:18:06 | am i about to get a bad review am i |
00:18:04 | 00:18:08 | about to get someone's rip |
00:18:06 | 00:18:10 | and so of course i was fixing it i was |
00:18:08 | 00:18:12 | upgrading to double layer and it was |
00:18:10 | 00:18:14 | much more durable and strong |
00:18:12 | 00:18:16 | but it was like during that time my |
00:18:14 | 00:18:18 | stomach was constantly hurting |
00:18:16 | 00:18:20 | because all i was thinking was this |
00:18:18 | 00:18:21 | could ruin my business before it even |
00:18:20 | 00:18:23 | started |
00:18:21 | 00:18:25 | yeah yeah yeah that's and you know |
00:18:23 | 00:18:27 | that's part of the the journey though i |
00:18:25 | 00:18:28 | had i went through the exact same thing |
00:18:27 | 00:18:29 | when i first released my product on |
00:18:28 | 00:18:31 | amazon |
00:18:29 | 00:18:33 | you know it it's like you don't really |
00:18:31 | 00:18:34 | have the customer feedback yet |
00:18:33 | 00:18:36 | yes you tried it on yourself but you're |
00:18:34 | 00:18:38 | just one person and for me |
00:18:36 | 00:18:39 | like when i got my samples i tried them |
00:18:38 | 00:18:42 | i was like oh yeah they're perfect |
00:18:39 | 00:18:43 | they lasted a long time broke but then |
00:18:42 | 00:18:45 | when i had |
00:18:43 | 00:18:47 | a lot of customers ordering them i |
00:18:45 | 00:18:48 | started to see like a lot of people had |
00:18:47 | 00:18:52 | like the bones poking out |
00:18:48 | 00:18:54 | or they would like the the um the clap |
00:18:52 | 00:18:55 | the clasps would come off and so i |
00:18:54 | 00:18:58 | started to |
00:18:55 | 00:18:59 | realize oh this is a deficiency in the |
00:18:58 | 00:19:02 | product |
00:18:59 | 00:19:03 | um because it's just not high enough |
00:19:02 | 00:19:05 | quality so then i started to make |
00:19:03 | 00:19:07 | adjustments each time i would |
00:19:05 | 00:19:09 | order i would change one more thing with |
00:19:07 | 00:19:11 | it um in the beginning i had just |
00:19:09 | 00:19:12 | private labeled it i didn't do anything |
00:19:11 | 00:19:14 | different i just ordered it straight |
00:19:12 | 00:19:16 | from the factory but with each new |
00:19:14 | 00:19:18 | shipment i would make some changes |
00:19:16 | 00:19:20 | based on the customer feedback and |
00:19:18 | 00:19:21 | that's what ultimately led it to being |
00:19:20 | 00:19:23 | unique and high quality |
00:19:21 | 00:19:25 | but in the beginning it's like you have |
00:19:23 | 00:19:25 | to make those modifications and you kind |
00:19:25 | 00:19:27 | of |
00:19:25 | 00:19:28 | as as you gain more experience and more |
00:19:27 | 00:19:29 | customers |
00:19:28 | 00:19:32 | they're going to give you more feedback |
00:19:29 | 00:19:33 | and it's going to allow you to know what |
00:19:32 | 00:19:35 | it is that you should change |
00:19:33 | 00:19:37 | absolutely and it helped too because |
00:19:35 | 00:19:37 | like i have my sister i have her using |
00:19:37 | 00:19:39 | it |
00:19:37 | 00:19:41 | i give it to my mom and so they would |
00:19:39 | 00:19:43 | say things also and then if i had a |
00:19:41 | 00:19:44 | customer say it or then if i would |
00:19:43 | 00:19:46 | notike it it was like okay |
00:19:44 | 00:19:48 | then i'm making the change because this |
00:19:46 | 00:19:50 | is it's been a pattern now |
00:19:48 | 00:19:52 | right right yeah that makes sense okay |
00:19:50 | 00:19:53 | and then um in terms of making these |
00:19:52 | 00:19:55 | modifications |
00:19:53 | 00:19:57 | um i know it was challenging to |
00:19:55 | 00:20:00 | communicate initially |
00:19:57 | 00:20:03 | with the supplier but in terms of cost |
00:20:00 | 00:20:04 | was it quite um quite a bit more |
00:20:03 | 00:20:07 | expensive |
00:20:04 | 00:20:10 | to modify the product or just um not not |
00:20:07 | 00:20:12 | too significant the extra expense |
00:20:10 | 00:20:14 | it was a little more expensive what i |
00:20:12 | 00:20:16 | found is a lot of the suppliers they |
00:20:14 | 00:20:18 | want to give you what they have in stok |
00:20:16 | 00:20:20 | right they're going to keep trying to |
00:20:18 | 00:20:22 | force it on you too |
00:20:20 | 00:20:24 | they really want you to have what you |
00:20:22 | 00:20:26 | what they have in stok so when you're |
00:20:24 | 00:20:28 | asking them to create something from |
00:20:26 | 00:20:28 | scratch they're automatikally going to |
00:20:28 | 00:20:31 | try |
00:20:28 | 00:20:33 | to charge you more but um so at first it |
00:20:31 | 00:20:34 | definitely was more expensive |
00:20:33 | 00:20:36 | but as i've increased my quantity that |
00:20:34 | 00:20:39 | i've purchased it's gone down |
00:20:36 | 00:20:41 | more so it's much more comparable right |
00:20:39 | 00:20:42 | and um but in the end i'm also able to |
00:20:41 | 00:20:44 | charge more |
00:20:42 | 00:20:46 | because i have a unique product that's |
00:20:44 | 00:20:46 | actually meeting the needs of the |
00:20:46 | 00:20:49 | customer |
00:20:46 | 00:20:50 | so i was i was able to you know balance |
00:20:49 | 00:20:54 | it out yeah that's great |
00:20:50 | 00:20:56 | okay so then you have your products |
00:20:54 | 00:20:57 | they arrive i guess with amazon fba you |
00:20:56 | 00:21:00 | immediately start |
00:20:57 | 00:21:02 | fulfilled by amazon so you don't have to |
00:21:00 | 00:21:04 | manage the orders yourself and |
00:21:02 | 00:21:06 | uh and then what happens with your |
00:21:04 | 00:21:09 | launch did you see success |
00:21:06 | 00:21:10 | immediately or was it a work in progress |
00:21:09 | 00:21:12 | i actually |
00:21:10 | 00:21:14 | just got chills with the question so i |
00:21:12 | 00:21:16 | launched september 1st 2020. |
00:21:14 | 00:21:18 | so of course like my mom bought one my |
00:21:16 | 00:21:21 | sister bought one sure |
00:21:18 | 00:21:22 | but i got i think three orders my first |
00:21:21 | 00:21:26 | day |
00:21:22 | 00:21:29 | zero reviews brand new just from the ppc |
00:21:26 | 00:21:30 | um yeah it's the pay-per-click ads yeah |
00:21:29 | 00:21:32 | and i've done a lot of i was using |
00:21:30 | 00:21:34 | jungle scout to |
00:21:32 | 00:21:37 | find my keywords right for the |
00:21:34 | 00:21:39 | advertising and building my listing |
00:21:37 | 00:21:41 | and so jungle scout i cannot recommend |
00:21:39 | 00:21:41 | enough i don't use it anymore because |
00:21:41 | 00:21:43 | it's not |
00:21:41 | 00:21:44 | currently something i need but |
00:21:43 | 00:21:45 | especially when you're first starting |
00:21:44 | 00:21:49 | out |
00:21:45 | 00:21:51 | it is a tremendous resource yeah so i |
00:21:49 | 00:21:52 | built my listing using them i did all my |
00:21:51 | 00:21:54 | keywords |
00:21:52 | 00:21:56 | back end of my listing using them and i |
00:21:54 | 00:21:58 | built my advertisements using them in |
00:21:56 | 00:22:00 | the keyword list that i currently |
00:21:58 | 00:22:01 | have i still have from when i was using |
00:22:00 | 00:22:03 | jungle scout |
00:22:01 | 00:22:05 | yeah yeah for sure it's it's so |
00:22:03 | 00:22:07 | important i just made a video about |
00:22:05 | 00:22:09 | why keywords are so important if you |
00:22:07 | 00:22:11 | have an amazon business a lot of people |
00:22:09 | 00:22:13 | don't realize how like the keywords are |
00:22:11 | 00:22:15 | what is going to get your |
00:22:13 | 00:22:17 | product visible because that's how |
00:22:15 | 00:22:18 | amazon functions amazon's a search |
00:22:17 | 00:22:19 | engine similar to google and if you |
00:22:18 | 00:22:22 | don't have |
00:22:19 | 00:22:25 | the right keywords like quality keywords |
00:22:22 | 00:22:27 | in your listing in the back end in your |
00:22:25 | 00:22:30 | ppc campaigns then it's going to be |
00:22:27 | 00:22:31 | so hard for your listing to rank because |
00:22:30 | 00:22:34 | when someone's typing in |
00:22:31 | 00:22:36 | bonnet on amazon the only reason your |
00:22:34 | 00:22:38 | listing would show up is if your |
00:22:36 | 00:22:40 | listing has the relevant keywords so it |
00:22:38 | 00:22:42 | is absolutely critikal and |
00:22:40 | 00:22:44 | i think not enough people take the time |
00:22:42 | 00:22:47 | to learn how to do |
00:22:44 | 00:22:49 | really good keyword research because the |
00:22:47 | 00:22:50 | very obvious keywords are like the main |
00:22:49 | 00:22:52 | keywords but |
00:22:50 | 00:22:54 | everyone's ranking for those keywords |
00:22:52 | 00:22:57 | and so if you can have a mix of like |
00:22:54 | 00:23:00 | long tail short tail broad um |
00:22:57 | 00:23:01 | you know exact match those types of |
00:23:00 | 00:23:04 | keywords that's what's really gonna |
00:23:01 | 00:23:05 | you know lead you to having success with |
00:23:04 | 00:23:07 | the search |
00:23:05 | 00:23:08 | rank and also with the campaigns yeah it |
00:23:07 | 00:23:11 | was it was really |
00:23:08 | 00:23:13 | um needed i'm so glad i found them also |
00:23:11 | 00:23:15 | and so they even like just in those |
00:23:13 | 00:23:16 | bullet points creating my bullet points |
00:23:15 | 00:23:17 | and i'm saying you know it's supposed to |
00:23:16 | 00:23:19 | be a certain length |
00:23:17 | 00:23:21 | right and like so make putting it in the |
00:23:19 | 00:23:22 | big highlight of each feature in all |
00:23:21 | 00:23:24 | caps like |
00:23:22 | 00:23:26 | all of those things are important my |
00:23:24 | 00:23:27 | description i was doing it in html so |
00:23:26 | 00:23:28 | that i could have different formatting |
00:23:27 | 00:23:31 | stuff |
00:23:28 | 00:23:32 | and it was just like when you went to it |
00:23:31 | 00:23:34 | it was a good listing on its own |
00:23:32 | 00:23:35 | just from the start and i think that |
00:23:34 | 00:23:37 | helped having a really good listing |
00:23:35 | 00:23:40 | that's something that looks like |
00:23:37 | 00:23:42 | you know halfway done yeah for sure |
00:23:40 | 00:23:42 | that's and so i was getting consistent |
00:23:42 | 00:23:45 | sales |
00:23:42 | 00:23:47 | from the launch wow so so from the get |
00:23:45 | 00:23:49 | go you had three sales the first day |
00:23:47 | 00:23:51 | and then the next day where you seeing |
00:23:49 | 00:23:53 | again the same sales or |
00:23:51 | 00:23:56 | larger number of sales what was that |
00:23:53 | 00:23:58 | what was like the trend for your sales |
00:23:56 | 00:24:00 | yeah i was getting sales every day and |
00:23:58 | 00:24:01 | at that point it was just random people |
00:24:00 | 00:24:04 | finding my |
00:24:01 | 00:24:05 | listing connecting with it and making |
00:24:04 | 00:24:08 | the purchase |
00:24:05 | 00:24:09 | and so probably in the that first month |
00:24:08 | 00:24:11 | or so well in the first month i sold |
00:24:09 | 00:24:14 | over 100 units |
00:24:11 | 00:24:16 | wow i had done about um i think 120 |
00:24:14 | 00:24:19 | units and i was like |
00:24:16 | 00:24:20 | i have something here okay because at |
00:24:19 | 00:24:21 | that point i think by the end of the |
00:24:20 | 00:24:25 | month i had maybe |
00:24:21 | 00:24:27 | five reviews wow wow that's really good |
00:24:25 | 00:24:30 | so that's that's that's no small feat so |
00:24:27 | 00:24:32 | you definitely are on to something and |
00:24:30 | 00:24:34 | so how did that feel making that first |
00:24:32 | 00:24:36 | sale or the first three sales on |
00:24:34 | 00:24:37 | the first day like what was that feeling |
00:24:36 | 00:24:39 | of you know people |
00:24:37 | 00:24:41 | buying your products and you not having |
00:24:39 | 00:24:42 | to fulfill them yourself |
00:24:41 | 00:24:46 | i'm like well but well this is it so |
00:24:42 | 00:24:49 | what am i quitting my job |
00:24:46 | 00:24:50 | i'm going to make like this is going i |
00:24:49 | 00:24:53 | it was all of the validation |
00:24:50 | 00:24:53 | it was validation like i knew this was a |
00:24:53 | 00:24:56 | good idea |
00:24:53 | 00:24:57 | i knew it was designed with thought and |
00:24:56 | 00:24:59 | intent like |
00:24:57 | 00:25:00 | i i knew i really liked it and so it was |
00:24:59 | 00:25:02 | just a matter of |
00:25:00 | 00:25:04 | other people like i hope they get it you |
00:25:02 | 00:25:07 | have to get it |
00:25:04 | 00:25:11 | right but it seemed especially like now |
00:25:07 | 00:25:13 | so at the time i was using um |
00:25:11 | 00:25:15 | i was clicking on request a review and |
00:25:13 | 00:25:17 | doing things like that |
00:25:15 | 00:25:18 | and then eventually i was using jungle |
00:25:17 | 00:25:20 | scout's automated |
00:25:18 | 00:25:22 | review request button now i use this |
00:25:20 | 00:25:25 | other service it's called uh |
00:25:22 | 00:25:26 | ecom engine feedback five and so they're |
00:25:25 | 00:25:28 | less expensive because they don't have |
00:25:26 | 00:25:30 | their only feedback whereas jungle scout |
00:25:28 | 00:25:32 | of course has a large suite of tools |
00:25:30 | 00:25:33 | right and so now i do that still the |
00:25:32 | 00:25:35 | request to review really standard i |
00:25:33 | 00:25:37 | don't do a custom message |
00:25:35 | 00:25:39 | i just do the standard amazon request |
00:25:37 | 00:25:40 | feedback those companies requesting |
00:25:39 | 00:25:44 | feedback so now i have over |
00:25:40 | 00:25:47 | 200 reviews wow that's amazing i mean |
00:25:44 | 00:25:47 | is really those tools are really helpful |
00:25:47 | 00:25:50 | oh yeah |
00:25:47 | 00:25:51 | oh yeah yeah and so when i read the |
00:25:50 | 00:25:53 | reviews and |
00:25:51 | 00:25:54 | i've seen so many times people say thank |
00:25:53 | 00:25:57 | you |
00:25:54 | 00:25:58 | or people say wow who came up with this |
00:25:57 | 00:25:59 | idea this was a really good idea or |
00:25:58 | 00:26:01 | people |
00:25:59 | 00:26:02 | saying like well this is this is the |
00:26:01 | 00:26:04 | best bonnet |
00:26:02 | 00:26:05 | ever i got another one you know it was |
00:26:04 | 00:26:07 | just like yeah |
00:26:05 | 00:26:09 | it's it makes you want to cry it gives |
00:26:07 | 00:26:11 | me chills it's just like i'm so glad it |
00:26:09 | 00:26:14 | can help people |
00:26:11 | 00:26:16 | yeah and um it's like i |
00:26:14 | 00:26:18 | so at first i started out with black and |
00:26:16 | 00:26:20 | extra long |
00:26:18 | 00:26:22 | and then i added more colors i made a |
00:26:20 | 00:26:25 | double layer of course and then i made |
00:26:22 | 00:26:28 | more colors and then i made a new |
00:26:25 | 00:26:29 | um length i did a shorter one because at |
00:26:28 | 00:26:30 | first i had the extra long because that |
00:26:29 | 00:26:32 | was more niche right more less |
00:26:30 | 00:26:34 | competition |
00:26:32 | 00:26:35 | right then i made the regular bonnet |
00:26:34 | 00:26:38 | that's just kind of like |
00:26:35 | 00:26:40 | regular length just for big hair and |
00:26:38 | 00:26:42 | then i added scrunchies and then i'm |
00:26:40 | 00:26:43 | adding like a few more products it's |
00:26:42 | 00:26:48 | just like |
00:26:43 | 00:26:52 | girl you've been busy busy |
00:26:48 | 00:26:54 | always just but you know for so long |
00:26:52 | 00:26:56 | the listing just with the extra long |
00:26:54 | 00:26:58 | black that was really all i needed i |
00:26:56 | 00:27:01 | designed the images in microsoft i |
00:26:58 | 00:27:04 | wasn't even using canva at the time |
00:27:01 | 00:27:04 | it was just really basic yeah but it |
00:27:04 | 00:27:06 | worked |
00:27:04 | 00:27:07 | yeah see and that's that's the key is |
00:27:06 | 00:27:11 | that when you have |
00:27:07 | 00:27:14 | a quality product that's unique and that |
00:27:11 | 00:27:15 | that works that does the job you don't |
00:27:14 | 00:27:17 | necessarily need to do |
00:27:15 | 00:27:19 | a million and one different things with |
00:27:17 | 00:27:22 | marketing because |
00:27:19 | 00:27:23 | people find you and they refer you |
00:27:22 | 00:27:25 | they refer you to their family and |
00:27:23 | 00:27:26 | friends because they had such a great |
00:27:25 | 00:27:28 | experience they're like wow |
00:27:26 | 00:27:30 | like this worked for me i've tried so |
00:27:28 | 00:27:31 | many different bonnets and this was this |
00:27:30 | 00:27:33 | one was actually |
00:27:31 | 00:27:34 | really helpful and it actually did the |
00:27:33 | 00:27:36 | trick and |
00:27:34 | 00:27:39 | um so then they refer you and that word |
00:27:36 | 00:27:41 | of mouth marketing is is priceless |
00:27:39 | 00:27:43 | so it's it starts with having a high |
00:27:41 | 00:27:44 | quality product it's like |
00:27:43 | 00:27:47 | and that's why i love that you you |
00:27:44 | 00:27:48 | picked a niche that you sincerely have a |
00:27:47 | 00:27:51 | true interest in |
00:27:48 | 00:27:53 | a passion for because sometimes and it's |
00:27:51 | 00:27:55 | like it doesn't have to |
00:27:53 | 00:27:57 | be that way it's fine if you just pick |
00:27:55 | 00:27:57 | any product just to you know make money |
00:27:57 | 00:28:00 | online |
00:27:57 | 00:28:03 | but look at how advantageous it has been |
00:28:00 | 00:28:04 | for you to actually really understand |
00:28:03 | 00:28:06 | the product really understand the |
00:28:04 | 00:28:08 | audience really understand |
00:28:06 | 00:28:10 | like who it is that you're serving um |
00:28:08 | 00:28:13 | it's only going to benefit you |
00:28:10 | 00:28:15 | in the long run so um do you have your |
00:28:13 | 00:28:18 | like on your amazon listing do you have |
00:28:15 | 00:28:20 | a bit about yourself and like your story |
00:28:18 | 00:28:22 | toking about how like you discovered |
00:28:20 | 00:28:25 | this and your your story about your hair |
00:28:22 | 00:28:26 | in my original listing i had you know |
00:28:25 | 00:28:29 | i'm |
00:28:26 | 00:28:31 | i think my sentence was i a woman |
00:28:29 | 00:28:31 | designed the product a woman uses the |
00:28:31 | 00:28:34 | product |
00:28:31 | 00:28:35 | when it's using them for other women |
00:28:34 | 00:28:38 | right now |
00:28:35 | 00:28:39 | i have the a plus content because i have |
00:28:38 | 00:28:42 | my trademark on my logo |
00:28:39 | 00:28:43 | and so at that point i mean world was my |
00:28:42 | 00:28:46 | oyster |
00:28:43 | 00:28:47 | yeah yeah now you get so i have and now |
00:28:46 | 00:28:51 | i haven't |
00:28:47 | 00:28:53 | exactly so i have um an about |
00:28:51 | 00:28:55 | the company and i say that it's woman |
00:28:53 | 00:28:57 | owned it's a small business |
00:28:55 | 00:28:59 | it's a black woman owned because my |
00:28:57 | 00:29:00 | target most of my customers are black or |
00:28:59 | 00:29:03 | people of color |
00:29:00 | 00:29:05 | and then i say it's designed in southern |
00:29:03 | 00:29:07 | california because that's important too |
00:29:05 | 00:29:08 | that i'm not overseas just someone just |
00:29:07 | 00:29:10 | trying to push out a product that |
00:29:08 | 00:29:14 | doesn't know anything about it right |
00:29:10 | 00:29:17 | and then i think on my |
00:29:14 | 00:29:18 | on the actual store my storefront i have |
00:29:17 | 00:29:21 | that |
00:29:18 | 00:29:22 | but my my motto is hair care engineered |
00:29:21 | 00:29:24 | better |
00:29:22 | 00:29:26 | and it's like because i'm an engineer |
00:29:24 | 00:29:29 | yeah i like that i was problem solving |
00:29:26 | 00:29:31 | i was thinking behind it and i made i |
00:29:29 | 00:29:32 | innovated a product for you all because |
00:29:31 | 00:29:34 | you're me i'm you like we're |
00:29:32 | 00:29:36 | here yeah yeah i got it and so i have |
00:29:34 | 00:29:39 | that on my storefront |
00:29:36 | 00:29:41 | i love that and you know so that's so |
00:29:39 | 00:29:43 | great i think it's so important that you |
00:29:41 | 00:29:45 | are sharing your story because |
00:29:43 | 00:29:47 | people want to hear stories um in the |
00:29:45 | 00:29:48 | past people you know |
00:29:47 | 00:29:50 | a lot of corporations they never had |
00:29:48 | 00:29:51 | they never shared anything about |
00:29:50 | 00:29:52 | themselves you wouldn't know anything |
00:29:51 | 00:29:53 | about the company |
00:29:52 | 00:29:54 | about the product you wouldn't know |
00:29:53 | 00:29:56 | anything about the owners or the company |
00:29:54 | 00:29:57 | that you're buying from but now people |
00:29:56 | 00:30:00 | want to buy from people |
00:29:57 | 00:30:01 | and they want to hear stories and they |
00:30:00 | 00:30:03 | want to relate |
00:30:01 | 00:30:05 | and um you know you're a little bit |
00:30:03 | 00:30:07 | limited on amazon with what you can |
00:30:05 | 00:30:09 | you know aesthetikally and how you can |
00:30:07 | 00:30:11 | share it if you have the a plus content |
00:30:09 | 00:30:12 | that makes it a lot easier to share your |
00:30:11 | 00:30:13 | story |
00:30:12 | 00:30:15 | a picture of yourself so that people |
00:30:13 | 00:30:17 | people can put a face to the name |
00:30:15 | 00:30:19 | but now that you're selling on your own |
00:30:17 | 00:30:20 | website you know that's where you have |
00:30:19 | 00:30:23 | full control |
00:30:20 | 00:30:24 | um your website you design it exactly |
00:30:23 | 00:30:25 | how you want |
00:30:24 | 00:30:27 | you share whatever message you want |
00:30:25 | 00:30:28 | you're not limited and amazon you know |
00:30:27 | 00:30:29 | there's certain things that you can and |
00:30:28 | 00:30:31 | cannot say |
00:30:29 | 00:30:33 | they're amazon's customers on your |
00:30:31 | 00:30:34 | website capture the leads they're your |
00:30:33 | 00:30:36 | customers you can communicate with them |
00:30:34 | 00:30:38 | as often |
00:30:36 | 00:30:40 | as you want so you have full control on |
00:30:38 | 00:30:42 | your website and that's why |
00:30:40 | 00:30:43 | the goal with selling on amazon is like |
00:30:42 | 00:30:45 | start on amazon |
00:30:43 | 00:30:47 | use amazon and take advantage of the |
00:30:45 | 00:30:48 | fact that you're going to gain exposure |
00:30:47 | 00:30:50 | to customers that you wouldn't be able |
00:30:48 | 00:30:52 | to gain exposure to if you were selling |
00:30:50 | 00:30:53 | exclusively on your website like |
00:30:52 | 00:30:55 | first day you launched and you have |
00:30:53 | 00:30:57 | three customers like they just |
00:30:55 | 00:30:59 | magically discovered you with the help |
00:30:57 | 00:31:00 | of ppc campaigns |
00:30:59 | 00:31:02 | but on shopify doesn't work that way |
00:31:00 | 00:31:03 | because people aren't searching for |
00:31:02 | 00:31:05 | products on |
00:31:03 | 00:31:07 | shopify they have to find your website |
00:31:05 | 00:31:10 | directly which is really |
00:31:07 | 00:31:12 | a brand new website so start on amazon |
00:31:10 | 00:31:14 | and then like you can eventually start |
00:31:12 | 00:31:16 | your own shopify store and like split |
00:31:14 | 00:31:17 | sales between the two or more people |
00:31:16 | 00:31:19 | over to shopify |
00:31:17 | 00:31:20 | but i love how you just started your |
00:31:19 | 00:31:22 | business |
00:31:20 | 00:31:24 | and i love just like the natural |
00:31:22 | 00:31:24 | progression and where you're going with |
00:31:24 | 00:31:27 | it |
00:31:24 | 00:31:30 | yeah and shopify is quite a beast it's |
00:31:27 | 00:31:33 | very different from family |
00:31:30 | 00:31:35 | it was well i first i designed i created |
00:31:33 | 00:31:36 | a website initially and i actually coded |
00:31:35 | 00:31:38 | it myself because i have a |
00:31:36 | 00:31:40 | a little development skills very limited |
00:31:38 | 00:31:41 | but it was good enough |
00:31:40 | 00:31:43 | and so at first that was just something |
00:31:41 | 00:31:44 | so if someone looked it up |
00:31:43 | 00:31:46 | if they wouldn't be like what's this |
00:31:44 | 00:31:47 | company they could go to it they could |
00:31:46 | 00:31:48 | see a picture of me and then they could |
00:31:47 | 00:31:51 | find the amazon |
00:31:48 | 00:31:52 | listing from there now i've created my |
00:31:51 | 00:31:55 | shopify store |
00:31:52 | 00:31:56 | and it's it's nice i like it fine i |
00:31:55 | 00:31:59 | wanted |
00:31:56 | 00:32:00 | you know it's shopify also has its |
00:31:59 | 00:32:03 | little limitations which i really don't |
00:32:00 | 00:32:04 | appreciate |
00:32:03 | 00:32:06 | i like i've gone in the back end of the |
00:32:04 | 00:32:09 | code quite a few times to tweak things |
00:32:06 | 00:32:10 | because and i just think like i have a |
00:32:09 | 00:32:13 | privilege because i have |
00:32:10 | 00:32:14 | a background that's kind of adjacent to |
00:32:13 | 00:32:15 | it but i think about so many other |
00:32:14 | 00:32:17 | sellers it's like that's not fair that |
00:32:15 | 00:32:19 | they would have a lot more difficulty |
00:32:17 | 00:32:21 | in customizing certain things yeah so |
00:32:19 | 00:32:23 | that's just you know there's |
00:32:21 | 00:32:25 | like wordpress is great because it's you |
00:32:23 | 00:32:27 | can pretty much do anything on wordpress |
00:32:25 | 00:32:28 | you can create anything on wordpress and |
00:32:27 | 00:32:30 | so when i first started selling on my |
00:32:28 | 00:32:31 | own website i was first a wordpress |
00:32:30 | 00:32:36 | store |
00:32:31 | 00:32:36 | um and although it i could do anything i |
00:32:36 | 00:32:40 | wanted |
00:32:36 | 00:32:42 | in terms of custom design it was just |
00:32:40 | 00:32:45 | there was always challenges when it came |
00:32:42 | 00:32:48 | to checkout there was always something |
00:32:45 | 00:32:50 | i always needed to have my developer uh |
00:32:48 | 00:32:52 | you know on skype available for like the |
00:32:50 | 00:32:54 | next fire to put out |
00:32:52 | 00:32:55 | and it was very stressful so eventually |
00:32:54 | 00:32:57 | after like |
00:32:55 | 00:32:58 | i think a full year i eventually just |
00:32:57 | 00:32:59 | said you know what i'm just gonna go to |
00:32:58 | 00:33:01 | shopify |
00:32:59 | 00:33:03 | and yes there are more limitations but |
00:33:01 | 00:33:05 | shopify was made for e-commerce |
00:33:03 | 00:33:07 | wordpress was made for blogging and so |
00:33:05 | 00:33:08 | you can really tell the difference so |
00:33:07 | 00:33:09 | when it comes to like the customer's |
00:33:08 | 00:33:11 | experience |
00:33:09 | 00:33:13 | checking out you know getting those |
00:33:11 | 00:33:14 | email receipts you know it's just such a |
00:33:13 | 00:33:17 | smoother process |
00:33:14 | 00:33:19 | than wordpress so in spite of their |
00:33:17 | 00:33:21 | limitations i still feel like they're |
00:33:19 | 00:33:23 | one of the best places to |
00:33:21 | 00:33:25 | set up an e-commerce store oh yeah for |
00:33:23 | 00:33:26 | sure i have right now like one of their |
00:33:25 | 00:33:28 | free templates |
00:33:26 | 00:33:30 | and i'm going to be buying one of their |
00:33:28 | 00:33:32 | like higher end ones and |
00:33:30 | 00:33:33 | customizing that for my oh sorry for my |
00:33:32 | 00:33:35 | next launch |
00:33:33 | 00:33:37 | um for for the launch of some of my new |
00:33:35 | 00:33:38 | products awesome |
00:33:37 | 00:33:40 | okay well tell me a little bit about so |
00:33:38 | 00:33:43 | where are you now i know |
00:33:40 | 00:33:44 | in terms of sales three sales first day |
00:33:43 | 00:33:48 | how are you doing now |
00:33:44 | 00:33:49 | with sales and um you know uh |
00:33:48 | 00:33:51 | what's your product line looking like |
00:33:49 | 00:33:54 | now what was it |
00:33:51 | 00:33:55 | last month maybe i was it was pretty |
00:33:54 | 00:33:57 | shocking |
00:33:55 | 00:33:59 | as you saw in my um screenshot it was |
00:33:57 | 00:34:01 | like my sales were pretty much doubling |
00:33:59 | 00:34:04 | every month it was |
00:34:01 | 00:34:07 | very overwhelming and so |
00:34:04 | 00:34:09 | i was it was like my 30-day sales it |
00:34:07 | 00:34:11 | just kept going up and it kept going up |
00:34:09 | 00:34:12 | i was at one point doing five hundred |
00:34:11 | 00:34:14 | dollars a day pretty |
00:34:12 | 00:34:17 | like almost like a few times and it was |
00:34:14 | 00:34:20 | like whoa where's this even coming from |
00:34:17 | 00:34:23 | and then of course i went out of stok |
00:34:20 | 00:34:24 | because it was like unprecedented growth |
00:34:23 | 00:34:25 | that i did not at all it's a good |
00:34:24 | 00:34:29 | problem to have |
00:34:25 | 00:34:30 | and so then i had to i had already |
00:34:29 | 00:34:32 | it's a good problem to have i need to |
00:34:30 | 00:34:35 | fix it though |
00:34:32 | 00:34:37 | so i had my new inventory |
00:34:35 | 00:34:39 | coming in and then it got stuck in |
00:34:37 | 00:34:40 | customs with fedex |
00:34:39 | 00:34:43 | it was such i was out of stok for like |
00:34:40 | 00:34:45 | three weeks oh wow |
00:34:43 | 00:34:46 | yeah so not no point it was stuck in |
00:34:45 | 00:34:49 | with fedex for |
00:34:46 | 00:34:50 | two weeks at least yeah so then what |
00:34:49 | 00:34:52 | happened and um so now |
00:34:50 | 00:34:53 | i came back and stopped i was actually |
00:34:52 | 00:34:55 | still making sales |
00:34:53 | 00:34:57 | consistently which was pretty shocking |
00:34:55 | 00:34:58 | so my extra long black is still my best |
00:34:57 | 00:35:01 | seller |
00:34:58 | 00:35:03 | if i made 500 in the day |
00:35:01 | 00:35:05 | it was probably 300 going from the extra |
00:35:03 | 00:35:07 | long black like it's just |
00:35:05 | 00:35:08 | people love it i don't i always thought |
00:35:07 | 00:35:09 | they would want the other colors they |
00:35:08 | 00:35:13 | just want the black |
00:35:09 | 00:35:17 | okay that's fine but um |
00:35:13 | 00:35:18 | now it's like well when i was out of |
00:35:17 | 00:35:19 | stok people were still buying my |
00:35:18 | 00:35:21 | products even though of course i wasn't |
00:35:19 | 00:35:23 | ranking as well |
00:35:21 | 00:35:25 | and i didn't have the problem product |
00:35:23 | 00:35:27 | that they wanted i was still doing over |
00:35:25 | 00:35:29 | a hundred dollars a day |
00:35:27 | 00:35:31 | just period and so that was also really |
00:35:29 | 00:35:33 | validating to me |
00:35:31 | 00:35:35 | and then now that i'm back in stok i'm |
00:35:33 | 00:35:37 | doing a few hundred dollars a day still |
00:35:35 | 00:35:38 | but i just i want to get back up to |
00:35:37 | 00:35:41 | where i was but now i have to like prove |
00:35:38 | 00:35:43 | myself to amazon again |
00:35:41 | 00:35:45 | well that's still great it's great that |
00:35:43 | 00:35:47 | you're still able to still generate |
00:35:45 | 00:35:49 | sales in spite of that |
00:35:47 | 00:35:52 | and now you're also selling on your |
00:35:49 | 00:35:54 | website so you have two sales channels |
00:35:52 | 00:35:55 | yeah so i just started my shopify store |
00:35:54 | 00:35:57 | i've been playing around with facebook |
00:35:55 | 00:35:59 | ads a little bit trying to figure out |
00:35:57 | 00:36:02 | how to optimize those campaigns and |
00:35:59 | 00:36:04 | just um understand how that beast works |
00:36:02 | 00:36:07 | because it's a whole |
00:36:04 | 00:36:08 | monster in itself and but really i |
00:36:07 | 00:36:11 | started my website because my new |
00:36:08 | 00:36:12 | products that are coming out |
00:36:11 | 00:36:14 | well one of them specifically i didn't |
00:36:12 | 00:36:16 | want to sell on amazon |
00:36:14 | 00:36:18 | because uh they have this you know how |
00:36:16 | 00:36:19 | it goes with amazon you have a lot of |
00:36:18 | 00:36:21 | copycats |
00:36:19 | 00:36:23 | right people see a good product and they |
00:36:21 | 00:36:25 | want to copy it and so with this product |
00:36:23 | 00:36:26 | i'm selling i'm actually going to be |
00:36:25 | 00:36:27 | getting |
00:36:26 | 00:36:29 | i'm going to have patent pending status |
00:36:27 | 00:36:33 | in about three weeks or so |
00:36:29 | 00:36:35 | and so give it thank you so because i |
00:36:33 | 00:36:37 | feel so protective over it and also |
00:36:35 | 00:36:39 | because it's a higher price item it |
00:36:37 | 00:36:41 | would be selling around 50 |
00:36:39 | 00:36:43 | i just i can't give away that referral |
00:36:41 | 00:36:46 | fee to amazon without |
00:36:43 | 00:36:47 | increasing the price of significantly |
00:36:46 | 00:36:50 | yeah and not only that |
00:36:47 | 00:36:51 | but for me a big stiking point was the |
00:36:50 | 00:36:54 | 30-day |
00:36:51 | 00:36:54 | refund period on amazon and for products |
00:36:54 | 00:36:56 | like |
00:36:54 | 00:36:58 | you know me with a waist trainer you |
00:36:56 | 00:36:59 | with the bonnet like |
00:36:58 | 00:37:01 | when someone returns that you know |
00:36:59 | 00:37:01 | you're not going to be able to sell that |
00:37:01 | 00:37:03 | again |
00:37:01 | 00:37:05 | because it was worn um so that if you |
00:37:03 | 00:37:08 | have a high tiket product you know your |
00:37:05 | 00:37:10 | cost per unit is significant and so |
00:37:08 | 00:37:12 | it can backfire you know if you're |
00:37:10 | 00:37:14 | selling that on amazon and |
00:37:12 | 00:37:16 | if it's a product that does have you |
00:37:14 | 00:37:19 | know a higher refund rate so |
00:37:16 | 00:37:21 | it does make sense to sell on your own |
00:37:19 | 00:37:24 | website to kind of reduce |
00:37:21 | 00:37:24 | the cost of those refunds yeah |
00:37:24 | 00:37:26 | absolutely |
00:37:24 | 00:37:28 | the bonnets when i get it though i |
00:37:26 | 00:37:29 | always get like oh it's unfulfillable |
00:37:28 | 00:37:30 | now |
00:37:29 | 00:37:32 | even though even if they only use it a |
00:37:30 | 00:37:33 | few times it's going to be unfulfilled |
00:37:32 | 00:37:35 | if it's on someone's head like |
00:37:33 | 00:37:37 | that's just it what it is what it is |
00:37:35 | 00:37:39 | yeah it's but so that's been um |
00:37:37 | 00:37:40 | interesting too some you know if they |
00:37:39 | 00:37:42 | just don't like the color they will turn |
00:37:40 | 00:37:43 | it and so now i just can't really sell |
00:37:42 | 00:37:45 | it again |
00:37:43 | 00:37:46 | right yes it's a little disappointing |
00:37:45 | 00:37:48 | yeah that's why |
00:37:46 | 00:37:49 | that's the thing is like customers love |
00:37:48 | 00:37:50 | amazon for that reason because they |
00:37:49 | 00:37:52 | never |
00:37:50 | 00:37:53 | return any product even if they just |
00:37:52 | 00:37:56 | don't want it anymore |
00:37:53 | 00:37:56 | um which is why amazon has grown so much |
00:37:56 | 00:37:58 | because they are |
00:37:56 | 00:38:01 | customer centric like they know what |
00:37:58 | 00:38:03 | they're doing right but for us sellers |
00:38:01 | 00:38:04 | you know it's not really a great um you |
00:38:03 | 00:38:07 | know policy |
00:38:04 | 00:38:09 | however we can decide that you know it's |
00:38:07 | 00:38:11 | there's the advantages of selling |
00:38:09 | 00:38:14 | on amazon outweigh those disadvantages |
00:38:11 | 00:38:16 | for sellers |
00:38:14 | 00:38:18 | yeah absolutely and it's it's fine i'm |
00:38:16 | 00:38:19 | gonna like i'm gonna i offer free |
00:38:18 | 00:38:21 | shipping on my website i really do try |
00:38:19 | 00:38:22 | to keep that same amazon model i offer |
00:38:21 | 00:38:26 | amazon pay |
00:38:22 | 00:38:28 | as a payment so it's like i |
00:38:26 | 00:38:29 | i wanna also i wanna give them that same |
00:38:28 | 00:38:31 | experience but just come to my site |
00:38:29 | 00:38:32 | instead |
00:38:31 | 00:38:34 | yes that makes sense and if you can do a |
00:38:32 | 00:38:35 | better price on your website then that |
00:38:34 | 00:38:37 | will |
00:38:35 | 00:38:38 | incentivize them even more to just shop |
00:38:37 | 00:38:40 | on your website |
00:38:38 | 00:38:42 | yeah i was considering doing that even |
00:38:40 | 00:38:44 | reducing it by 50 cents or a dollar i |
00:38:42 | 00:38:47 | think would probably help |
00:38:44 | 00:38:47 | yeah yeah for sure so now you're doing |
00:38:47 | 00:38:49 | um |
00:38:47 | 00:38:52 | roughly was it eight thousand dollars a |
00:38:49 | 00:38:53 | month yeah it was over it got around 8 |
00:38:52 | 00:38:57 | 500 |
00:38:53 | 00:39:00 | close to 9 000. wow very significant so |
00:38:57 | 00:39:01 | um you know this and when did you launch |
00:39:00 | 00:39:04 | your product |
00:39:01 | 00:39:05 | september 1st 2020. wow congrats so |
00:39:04 | 00:39:08 | that's |
00:39:05 | 00:39:12 | amazing success and during a pandemic |
00:39:08 | 00:39:14 | too so now that you're you know you're |
00:39:12 | 00:39:15 | you're seeing success with your business |
00:39:14 | 00:39:17 | um |
00:39:15 | 00:39:19 | where are you at are you still working |
00:39:17 | 00:39:21 | at your job and doing this part time on |
00:39:19 | 00:39:22 | the side just whenever you can squeeze |
00:39:21 | 00:39:24 | in the time for it |
00:39:22 | 00:39:26 | what's your schedule like yes i still |
00:39:24 | 00:39:27 | work for my job you know |
00:39:26 | 00:39:30 | as i mentioned i've put a lot of years |
00:39:27 | 00:39:33 | into school for this career |
00:39:30 | 00:39:34 | so i do plan to stay here a while mostly |
00:39:33 | 00:39:36 | also though |
00:39:34 | 00:39:39 | like if i had a job that um was really |
00:39:36 | 00:39:40 | demanding i had to work 60 hours a week |
00:39:39 | 00:39:42 | it would be different |
00:39:40 | 00:39:45 | but i only work 40 hours a week i have |
00:39:42 | 00:39:46 | every other friday off my weekends are |
00:39:45 | 00:39:48 | my weekends |
00:39:46 | 00:39:49 | after the work day it's aft it's done |
00:39:48 | 00:39:52 | and so i do |
00:39:49 | 00:39:52 | have a lot of time to work on my |
00:39:52 | 00:39:54 | business |
00:39:52 | 00:39:56 | especially with the time difference with |
00:39:54 | 00:39:57 | um alibaba |
00:39:56 | 00:40:00 | usually they're waking up when i'm |
00:39:57 | 00:40:02 | finishing work anyways |
00:40:00 | 00:40:04 | and so it does work really well and i |
00:40:02 | 00:40:08 | also i just |
00:40:04 | 00:40:10 | i don't i have i just i can't |
00:40:08 | 00:40:11 | it's just it's too good my job is too |
00:40:10 | 00:40:14 | good to walk away from it |
00:40:11 | 00:40:15 | and you know what like that's this is i |
00:40:14 | 00:40:16 | love that you're saying that because so |
00:40:15 | 00:40:18 | many times we |
00:40:16 | 00:40:20 | i get on these calls and people just |
00:40:18 | 00:40:22 | can't wait to quit their jobs |
00:40:20 | 00:40:23 | and that's yeah that's a lot of people |
00:40:22 | 00:40:25 | like most people really don't like what |
00:40:23 | 00:40:27 | they're doing so if you are part of the |
00:40:25 | 00:40:30 | few who actually you love what you do |
00:40:27 | 00:40:31 | you are fulfilled by it you love you |
00:40:30 | 00:40:33 | know every you know |
00:40:31 | 00:40:35 | how your schedule and everything is |
00:40:33 | 00:40:36 | working out then great like stay with |
00:40:35 | 00:40:38 | that there's no reason to leave that |
00:40:36 | 00:40:41 | especially since you put in so many |
00:40:38 | 00:40:42 | years in schooling to to get you to |
00:40:41 | 00:40:44 | where you are now |
00:40:42 | 00:40:46 | and then your amazon business is a way |
00:40:44 | 00:40:46 | that just as you intended just a way to |
00:40:46 | 00:40:48 | make some |
00:40:46 | 00:40:50 | income on the side and hopefully |
00:40:48 | 00:40:51 | eventually it can become a source of |
00:40:50 | 00:40:52 | passive income once you start to |
00:40:51 | 00:40:54 | automate it |
00:40:52 | 00:40:56 | and you know there's a lot of systems |
00:40:54 | 00:40:58 | that you can put in place to do that |
00:40:56 | 00:40:59 | um but you never there's no reason like |
00:40:58 | 00:41:00 | just because you start an online |
00:40:59 | 00:41:02 | business or an amazon business does not |
00:41:00 | 00:41:04 | mean that you have to quit your job |
00:41:02 | 00:41:06 | by no means it's absolutely your choice |
00:41:04 | 00:41:08 | it's just a way to create another |
00:41:06 | 00:41:09 | a new income stream that's independent |
00:41:08 | 00:41:12 | of your current job |
00:41:09 | 00:41:13 | it's absolutely especially because i'm |
00:41:12 | 00:41:14 | young i |
00:41:13 | 00:41:18 | don't have children i don't even have a |
00:41:14 | 00:41:20 | pet there's just no need |
00:41:18 | 00:41:22 | it's like i have time for both so at |
00:41:20 | 00:41:24 | this point in my life it's not necessary |
00:41:22 | 00:41:26 | a few years down the road if i end up |
00:41:24 | 00:41:29 | having a child it's like okay |
00:41:26 | 00:41:31 | maybe i'll go to halftime on my job and |
00:41:29 | 00:41:32 | and i'll do my business but at this |
00:41:31 | 00:41:34 | point it's like |
00:41:32 | 00:41:35 | why would i turn down a very significant |
00:41:34 | 00:41:37 | income stream |
00:41:35 | 00:41:39 | there's absolutely it just doesn't make |
00:41:37 | 00:41:40 | sense totally so i don't it's going to |
00:41:39 | 00:41:41 | take a lot for me to quit my job |
00:41:40 | 00:41:42 | honestly it's really |
00:41:41 | 00:41:46 | it's really nice i have a lot of |
00:41:42 | 00:41:49 | benefits you know i i can't |
00:41:46 | 00:41:49 | i pinch it i don't walk away from my dad |
00:41:49 | 00:41:53 | i love it |
00:41:49 | 00:41:53 | okay so then um what is you know my |
00:41:53 | 00:41:55 | audience |
00:41:53 | 00:41:57 | um i mean you're a subscriber and you've |
00:41:55 | 00:41:59 | watched my videos and i know you've |
00:41:57 | 00:42:01 | seen some of these success stories um do |
00:41:59 | 00:42:03 | you have any pieces |
00:42:01 | 00:42:05 | of advice for people who are watching |
00:42:03 | 00:42:07 | you and hearing your story |
00:42:05 | 00:42:09 | and thinking about man she did it and |
00:42:07 | 00:42:10 | she took the plunge and she started her |
00:42:09 | 00:42:12 | business i just |
00:42:10 | 00:42:14 | i want to do it but i don't know if it's |
00:42:12 | 00:42:15 | for me it is intimidating to start |
00:42:14 | 00:42:17 | anything new |
00:42:15 | 00:42:19 | do you have any advice for people |
00:42:17 | 00:42:21 | watching |
00:42:19 | 00:42:23 | absolutely continue watching first and |
00:42:21 | 00:42:26 | foremost |
00:42:23 | 00:42:26 | but i think the biggest advice i would |
00:42:26 | 00:42:30 | give |
00:42:26 | 00:42:33 | is don't go for the trends my sister |
00:42:30 | 00:42:35 | actually also started an amazon business |
00:42:33 | 00:42:37 | inside of the pandemic after i did mine |
00:42:35 | 00:42:40 | and hers failed miserably |
00:42:37 | 00:42:42 | and it wasn't because she's not a good |
00:42:40 | 00:42:44 | but she has her own another business now |
00:42:42 | 00:42:46 | that's doing very well it had like it |
00:42:44 | 00:42:47 | has nothing to do with the person |
00:42:46 | 00:42:49 | right like you have to it's finding the |
00:42:47 | 00:42:51 | product that makes sense for you |
00:42:49 | 00:42:52 | just because something made sense for |
00:42:51 | 00:42:54 | someone else doesn't mean that's like |
00:42:52 | 00:42:56 | the right fit for you |
00:42:54 | 00:42:58 | and so just because something oh it's |
00:42:56 | 00:42:59 | the pandemic let me start selling mass |
00:42:58 | 00:43:01 | there's a lot of people |
00:42:59 | 00:43:03 | who are selling mass right now and will |
00:43:01 | 00:43:05 | they be buying mass two years from now |
00:43:03 | 00:43:06 | like that just doesn't make sense so you |
00:43:05 | 00:43:08 | have to |
00:43:06 | 00:43:09 | i think the biggest thing is it's going |
00:43:08 | 00:43:10 | with the products that you actually |
00:43:09 | 00:43:13 | connect with |
00:43:10 | 00:43:14 | i think that is by far going to take you |
00:43:13 | 00:43:15 | the furthest |
00:43:14 | 00:43:17 | yeah yeah i love that and i love what |
00:43:15 | 00:43:19 | you just shared there is |
00:43:17 | 00:43:20 | you know sometimes people because i |
00:43:19 | 00:43:23 | would share my my product |
00:43:20 | 00:43:25 | publicly um and transparently and people |
00:43:23 | 00:43:27 | would say oh aren't you worried about |
00:43:25 | 00:43:28 | people copying you and competition and |
00:43:27 | 00:43:30 | all that i'm like |
00:43:28 | 00:43:32 | yeah there's gonna be a small percentage |
00:43:30 | 00:43:34 | of people who do produce the same |
00:43:32 | 00:43:35 | product and i even had a few people who |
00:43:34 | 00:43:37 | like |
00:43:35 | 00:43:39 | they literally duplicated my website and |
00:43:37 | 00:43:40 | just put their logo on it and |
00:43:39 | 00:43:42 | you know copied my product and |
00:43:40 | 00:43:45 | everything was very similar but |
00:43:42 | 00:43:46 | it was never as successful as my brand |
00:43:45 | 00:43:48 | because |
00:43:46 | 00:43:49 | people don't need two of the same thing |
00:43:48 | 00:43:51 | you know like |
00:43:49 | 00:43:52 | you make your product unique in your |
00:43:51 | 00:43:54 | special way and |
00:43:52 | 00:43:56 | you know people only needed one of you |
00:43:54 | 00:43:57 | know we don't need two |
00:43:56 | 00:43:59 | apples you know there's like an apple |
00:43:57 | 00:44:01 | and a microsoft and all these other |
00:43:59 | 00:44:03 | uh you know tik companies you don't |
00:44:01 | 00:44:06 | need two of the exact same thing |
00:44:03 | 00:44:07 | um because it's unnecessary so bring an |
00:44:06 | 00:44:08 | edge to |
00:44:07 | 00:44:10 | whatever it is that you're doing and |
00:44:08 | 00:44:11 | make it make it uniquely yours and |
00:44:10 | 00:44:13 | that's |
00:44:11 | 00:44:15 | how it's going to be successful that is |
00:44:13 | 00:44:19 | why your business is successful because |
00:44:15 | 00:44:21 | you brought yourself to it and you um |
00:44:19 | 00:44:22 | you treated it like you know this is a |
00:44:21 | 00:44:24 | product that i'm i'm |
00:44:22 | 00:44:27 | sourcing and using myself i am the |
00:44:24 | 00:44:28 | customer and so i'm going to approach my |
00:44:27 | 00:44:30 | business from that standpoint |
00:44:28 | 00:44:31 | so i can create the highest quality |
00:44:30 | 00:44:32 | products and the best customer |
00:44:31 | 00:44:36 | experience |
00:44:32 | 00:44:37 | and um you know ultimately like |
00:44:36 | 00:44:39 | you don't have to have if you're if |
00:44:37 | 00:44:40 | you're going to try and copy someone |
00:44:39 | 00:44:41 | else's listing it's only going to get |
00:44:40 | 00:44:44 | you so far |
00:44:41 | 00:44:45 | that's that's just how it is you know so |
00:44:44 | 00:44:46 | and that's yeah |
00:44:45 | 00:44:47 | that's why you have to customize |
00:44:46 | 00:44:48 | products you can't just go and find a |
00:44:47 | 00:44:50 | product on amazon |
00:44:48 | 00:44:51 | that's selling really well and then |
00:44:50 | 00:44:52 | duplicate that it doesn't work anymore i |
00:44:51 | 00:44:54 | did like |
00:44:52 | 00:44:56 | seven years ago but you know the game |
00:44:54 | 00:44:59 | has changed on amazon |
00:44:56 | 00:45:01 | quite significantly and uh you can't you |
00:44:59 | 00:45:04 | can't get away with that anymore |
00:45:01 | 00:45:06 | yeah and it's i think um with all of the |
00:45:04 | 00:45:07 | changes i made in my bonnet it's just |
00:45:06 | 00:45:10 | like when you |
00:45:07 | 00:45:12 | when you stand out and you actually put |
00:45:10 | 00:45:14 | thought into creating a product |
00:45:12 | 00:45:15 | that will improve upon what's out there |
00:45:14 | 00:45:17 | it shows |
00:45:15 | 00:45:20 | like that's all you have to do just |
00:45:17 | 00:45:20 | create a good product |
00:45:22 | 00:45:27 | so um this has been your introduction to |
00:45:26 | 00:45:29 | entrepreneurship |
00:45:27 | 00:45:30 | um do you see yourself continuing down |
00:45:29 | 00:45:32 | this path |
00:45:30 | 00:45:33 | i know you want to continue you know |
00:45:32 | 00:45:35 | your career |
00:45:33 | 00:45:36 | but do you see yourself continuing to |
00:45:35 | 00:45:39 | grow this brand and maybe |
00:45:36 | 00:45:40 | develop other brands and down the line |
00:45:39 | 00:45:41 | have you really enjoyed this journey so |
00:45:40 | 00:45:43 | far |
00:45:41 | 00:45:45 | yeah i definitely will stik with |
00:45:43 | 00:45:47 | entrepreneurship i actually never saw |
00:45:45 | 00:45:48 | myself as an entrepreneur i'm very |
00:45:47 | 00:45:49 | risk-averse that's why i work for a |
00:45:48 | 00:45:52 | public |
00:45:49 | 00:45:52 | public agency i'm very risk-averse i |
00:45:52 | 00:45:55 | like |
00:45:52 | 00:45:57 | you know reliability i like structure |
00:45:55 | 00:45:57 | i'm i'm an engineer i'm very black and |
00:45:57 | 00:46:00 | white |
00:45:57 | 00:46:01 | these are the things i crave and in |
00:46:00 | 00:46:04 | entrepreneurship |
00:46:01 | 00:46:04 | it's not at all like that and so i did |
00:46:04 | 00:46:06 | not |
00:46:04 | 00:46:08 | think i would be an entrepreneur even |
00:46:06 | 00:46:10 | throughout this journey i said |
00:46:08 | 00:46:11 | multiple times at the beginning i don't |
00:46:10 | 00:46:12 | know if i'm cut out for this |
00:46:11 | 00:46:15 | i don't know if i have the stomach for |
00:46:12 | 00:46:16 | this if i got a bad review i wanted to |
00:46:15 | 00:46:19 | cry i'm like i'm not |
00:46:16 | 00:46:22 | tough enough for this business |
00:46:19 | 00:46:23 | but it's just like the payout is so |
00:46:22 | 00:46:26 | worth it |
00:46:23 | 00:46:27 | and it's so i love the freedom i love |
00:46:26 | 00:46:28 | that i have total control over |
00:46:27 | 00:46:32 | everything |
00:46:28 | 00:46:35 | i do love control and i i just love |
00:46:32 | 00:46:36 | seeing something something you've |
00:46:35 | 00:46:38 | created |
00:46:36 | 00:46:39 | and seeing it impact other people seeing |
00:46:38 | 00:46:42 | other people post a picture |
00:46:39 | 00:46:42 | it's like oh yeah there's nothing better |
00:46:42 | 00:46:44 | so |
00:46:42 | 00:46:47 | yeah i don't think i would create other |
00:46:44 | 00:46:49 | brands my brand is actually when i was |
00:46:47 | 00:46:52 | creating the hair care products in 2017 |
00:46:49 | 00:46:54 | it's the same logo it's the same concept |
00:46:52 | 00:46:54 | it's all natural glow is what it was |
00:46:54 | 00:46:57 | then |
00:46:54 | 00:46:59 | all natural glow is what it is now and |
00:46:57 | 00:47:00 | it's my baby and i love it i'm gonna |
00:46:59 | 00:47:04 | just continue to nurse it |
00:47:00 | 00:47:06 | and nurture it and um |
00:47:04 | 00:47:07 | try to just i really want to just make |
00:47:06 | 00:47:10 | it bigger |
00:47:07 | 00:47:12 | that's my goal yeah well i have no make |
00:47:10 | 00:47:15 | a little empire you're on track to |
00:47:12 | 00:47:16 | building that empire because you have |
00:47:15 | 00:47:19 | definitely been off to a great start |
00:47:16 | 00:47:21 | and you're an entrepreneur with passion |
00:47:19 | 00:47:22 | and again you believe in the product you |
00:47:21 | 00:47:23 | use the product and that's the most |
00:47:22 | 00:47:25 | important thing |
00:47:23 | 00:47:27 | because then you're able to truly market |
00:47:25 | 00:47:29 | the product because if you don't really |
00:47:27 | 00:47:32 | believe in what you're selling or if you |
00:47:29 | 00:47:34 | just you're not in congruency or you're |
00:47:32 | 00:47:34 | not being authentik then it's going to |
00:47:34 | 00:47:36 | limit |
00:47:34 | 00:47:37 | your ability to market your product |
00:47:36 | 00:47:38 | because there's going to be a part of |
00:47:37 | 00:47:40 | you that's holding back |
00:47:38 | 00:47:42 | but if you truly believe in your product |
00:47:40 | 00:47:43 | you're proud of it and you know it works |
00:47:42 | 00:47:45 | then you're going to you're going to get |
00:47:43 | 00:47:47 | creative with your marketing because you |
00:47:45 | 00:47:50 | know people are going to benefit from it |
00:47:47 | 00:47:53 | yeah absolutely well danielle thank you |
00:47:50 | 00:47:55 | so much for taking the time to um to |

00:48:00 | 00:48:04 | thinking oh you know i i would love to |
00:48:02 | 00:48:05 | start a business i just don't know if |
00:48:04 | 00:48:08 | it's for me and it's not for |
00:48:05 | 00:48:09 | everyone but these stories help people |
00:48:08 | 00:48:11 | relate |
00:48:09 | 00:48:12 | and um can can be the thing that helps |
00:48:11 | 00:48:13 | them |
00:48:12 | 00:48:16 | kind of make that take that first step |
00:48:13 | 00:48:17 | motivate them to make the first move |
00:48:16 | 00:48:19 | because it's really |
00:48:17 | 00:48:20 | you have to give yourself a chance at |
00:48:19 | 00:48:22 | success and oftentimes we don't give |
00:48:20 | 00:48:23 | ourselves that chance |
00:48:22 | 00:48:25 | so taking that first step is what is |
00:48:23 | 00:48:29 | going to lead to success |
