Is YouTube Premium Worth It? 3 Things to Know Before You Sign Up in 2022!

michael here and if you're anything like me, you watch a lot of youtube and maybe you've notiked there seem to be more ads on the platform lately: unskipable ads, repetitive ads and just annoying ads. youtube premium removes those ads for a monthly fee. but is it really worth it? keep watching to find out. number one: how much does youtube premium cost? after i mention the price of youtube premium in a recent video, someone messaged me to say i got the price wrong. well, my price wasn't wrong, but neither was the price that that person mentioned. let me explain. take a look at youtube premium's website. at recording time, the price is 11.99 per month with a three month free trial. but from the youtube app on my iphone, i click get youtube premium and the display price is 15.99 per month. what happened to 11.99 per month? it's the same service but at a different price, and here's why youtube is just passing along a charge from apple when people use their iphones or their ipads to sign up for the subscription. so to avoid the higher price, just sign up for youtube premium from a computer. i'm using a macbook pro and that's okay. you see here from the chrome browser i was able to sign up for 11.99 per month and real quick. while we're toking about pricing, you see here there's a discount if you pay for a year in advance. plus, there is a plan for families and another one for students too. let's move on, and we're moving on to number two: the features that you get for that monthly price. first and foremost, youtube premium removes the ads from videos like the one you're watching right now. look here: the majority of people who responded to a polo mine- said youtube had the worst ad experience of free streaming services. but with youtube premium, the ads are gone, even those that you can typically skip after a few seconds. now i know what you may be thinking. there are other ways to stop seeing ads on youtube, but with youtube premium, the creators that you watch still get paid. this was my cut of youtube premium revenue last month. i know it's not a lot, but it does help creators like me who are more reliant on ads. for example, a channel like mine is really dependent on ads because i've chosen to turn down all sponsorships to provide reviews that you can actually trust. the next two features are great for mobile users. first, i want to tell you about background play. with premium, you can press play on any youtube video from the app and then it's going to continue playing as you navigate other apps on your phone. for example, open up a web browser and the youtube video just keeps playing. if you like to listen to longer youtube videos as background noise, this is a feature that you're going to use more often than you realize. i know that i do. and the second mobile feature i want to tok about is downloading videos to watch offline. it's not just for plane trips. maybe you're trying to watch your data usage or you know you're going to be traveling through an area with little or no reception. premium members can download youtube videos to watch offline anywhere, and after you've downloaded a video, navigate to the library tab from a mobile device and just click downloads. you see, here you also have the option to turn on smart downloads, and when this feature is activated, youtube is going to automatikally download 20 videos a week when you're connected to wi-fi, and these downloads are all based on youtube's recommendation system. not done. yet another benefit for premium users is youtube music premium. now, this is a separate app from youtube, and it's got millions of songs and videos, too, from your favorite artists, all available to download for offline listening. plus, you can use background play. so if you pay for another streaming music app like spotify or siriusxm, you may be able to cancel it and use youtube premium instead. those are the main perks of signing up for youtube premium, but i should mention that youtube originals were previously a selling point of this service, but that's no longer the case. going forward, youtube has moved away from producing those originals. now to number three. how do i know if youtube premium is worth it after all this? if you're not sure if youtube premium makes sense for you, i've got three things that i want you to think about. first up, how much time do you spend on youtube? fortunately, youtube provides this information. click your profile icon, time watched, and you'll see a summary of your watch time history. this is for youtube only, not youtube music or youtube tv. so if you find you spend more time streaming youtube, then let's say netflix. youtube premium may be a no-brainer. but the second thing i want you to think about is how disruptive you find the ads, which is gonna depend on the content you watch on the platform. i don't know about you, but i appreciate that youtube lets me skip a lot of those ads after a few seconds. but i finally signed up for youtube premium after seeing the same ad from a single company on lots of different videos from multiple creators that i follow. so it wasn't so much the length of the ads that bothered me, it is just that they became way too repetitive. and if you watch a lot of long form content on youtube- things like podcasts, home workouts and meditation videos- certain types of ads may be more annoying than the ads on an average video. and the third thing to consider is how signing up for youtube premium would affect your overall streaming setup and your budget. ask yourself this: would you spend more time on youtube without the ads and would you take advantage of other youtube premium benefits, including the separate music app? if so, you may be able to cancel another subscription to offset the cost of youtube premium. right now i'm still in my free trial period, but i like youtube premium so far. my biggest hurdle- i'll admit it's a mental one- i pay for the live tv streaming service youtube tv for part of the year, so when you add up the cost of that and youtube premium- they're separate. it feels like an awful lot of money going to youtube every month. thanks for.

YouTube Ads Are Getting Insane and I Hate It.

I am a YouTuber. specifically, I'm a YouTuber who doesn't do in-video sponsorship deals because I think they ruin videos. this means that between 70 and 80 of my Revenue comes from viewers watching advertisements before and during my videos. so I'd like you to keep in mind that I'm heavily biased towards these ads. when I say YouTube has gone absolutely off the rails with their ads recently- actually, it's not just recently- I've become more and more concerned about YouTube's increasingly aggressive desire to force as many ads down people's throats over the last couple years. every time that YouTube rolls out a new feature relating to ads generally- a way to make you watch more of them- I read comments and I see a ton of misinformation about how all this works, and many YouTubers are intentionally obtuse about it all because they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. fortunately, I'm an idiot, so bite I will. let's tok about YouTube ads, how much they do or don't help creators, all the different ways to watch less ads and how those impact you, me and YouTube. But first you need to know how ads work. YouTube gives 55 of the money they earned to the Creator and keeps 45 for themselves. the amount that advertisers are willing to pay changes a lot depending on factors like the viewer's age, location and what time of year it is, if you've ever notiked, that more videos come out in December. this is why advertisers are willing to pay a lot more before Christmas than they are in the middle of March. the 5545 split is honestly, pretty reasonable. YouTube provides the service and algorithm and still gives creators over half. compare this to tiktok, who, in 2021, had a revenue of 4.6 billion and only paid out 200 million, meaning they kept 95 for themselves. the thing is, these ads are incredibly cheap. to earn a dollar on YouTube, it takes between 2 and 4 400 views, depending on the video and the demographics. in theory, this would be higher, but the prevalence of things like Adblock means that a lot less people are seeing ads, but the same number of people are watching, and YouTube's solution to this is absolutely senseless and insane. they take the remaining people that are watching ads and punish them by making them watch more ads to make up for the people using Adblock. this, of course, causes people to install ad blockers and YouTube counters by giving even more ads to their viewers. it's a ridiculous system that actively punishes people who are doing what YouTube wants them to, and now YouTube is experimenting with adding five ads before videos, and some people are reporting seeing up to 10, and those are just the ads before the video. there are also mid-roll ads, the advertisements that interrupt videos. to play like this: what goes bump in the night. it might be your gifted child. register your child with psyops today. it's the law, it's your duty. I used to have all of these off on my channel. they're awful. but then a year or so ago, YouTube came out and said: hey, if you're not properly putting advertisements inside of your videos, we'll do it for you and take all the money. YouTube does have a nice tool that helps creators Place mid-roll ads into videos. it will scan for Fades to Black with little audio, natural transition points and then place an ad there for you. well, it would be a nice tool if it weren't for the fact that it's ridiculously aggressive. take a look at this video for my daily upload Channel, John Grant games Archives. this is the trimmed down ad version that I have. I try to keep it most- one ad per 15 to 20 minutes. but if I click this button to revert it to YouTube's defaults, it wants me to show 13 ads in a 40 minute video. this is an ad every three minutes. it's not reasonable. a few months back I was looking at Old uploads on the channel and found some videos with a ton of downvotes. this made me curious. on YouTube, you can't earn revenue from videos until you have 1 000 subscribers and have become partnered. you can't Tinker with the advertisement settings or anything. they're all off by default. apparently, once you become partnered, YouTube flips that switch for all of your old videos and automatikally places these insane amounts of ads. if the system gets aggressive enough, old videos are completely unwatchable. I had to go back and spend hours fixing things because of how horrible it was. ideally I could have just turned monetization off for these videos. they're old and have very few people watching them at this point. but remember, YouTube says if you don't monetize your videos, they will. so turning off monetization wouldn't actually change the ads, it would just change if I'm getting a cut. so instead I had to take the hours that I could be making actual content for YouTube that they would actually promote to a large number of viewers and would benefit everybody, instead spending it trying to make old content watchable. this doesn't work for anybody. I just want people to enjoy my videos. that's it. I don't do in-video sponsorships because I think they make videos bad. I try to minimize mid-roll ads for the same reason, and yet many of you have had to endure a slog of ads to get here and I hate, eat it. so let's tok about Solutions as well as the costs and benefits of each. the easy answer for many is get an ad blocker. you block origin is by far the best in this regard. it's free, lightweight, never pops up asking for donations and is consistently kept up to date by the team of volunteers. if you just want ads gone, this is a solution, but it does have a couple downsides. the main one for me is that creators are left high and dry. we don't get anything from an Adblock view. now, as I said earlier, the revenue from a single video is a fraction of a penny. a single ad block isn't much, but when two-thirds of Millennials and gen Z use Adblock, that's two-thirds of the revenue gone. there's also another browser extension called sponsor block, which skips through sponsored segments and YouTube videos. it even keeps a rolling total of how much sponsored stuff you've skipped over the time I've used it. I've apparently saved 24 hours of listening to ads. nice, theoretikally, this plugin also stops creators from getting commissions off of you signing up to a sponsored service, but if you were looking for ways to skip these ads, you probably weren't interested in raid Squarespace Legends only on Audible. any but soon. Adblock won't work on its own. most people use Google Chrome as their web browser, and in 2023, Chrome is getting rid of ad blocking capability- not a surprise, given YouTube and chrome are both owned by Google. there are multiple other options for browsers, but there is a potential trap here. many browsers like Brave, Vivaldi and Microsoft Edge all use chromium as a base. this means that Google has potential leverage over them. I could totally see a future where these browsers are forced to remo.

YouTube Premium Explained - Is it Good for Viewers AND Creators?

hey everybody, it's lon seidman. it's time once again for your weekly wrap-up, and this week we're going to tok. all about youtube premium, both what it's like for a subscriber, but also on the creator side, because it is a different monetization model versus the advertiser supported content. a lot of you were interested in discussing this further from last week's video, so we're gonna do it this week. let's get to it. [Music]. now i am a youtube premium subscriber and i subscribe for a couple of reasons. one is that once i push on a video here, it just starts playing, no matter what platform i'm on. so on my tv it is super fast. on my phone, as you just saw, it boots up right away, and that's because it doesn't have to go out and query an ad server first to see if there's an ad for you, and i'm sure those of you who watch youtube with ads have also notiked that over the last couple of years there's a lot more ads appearing in front and in the middle of the youtube videos that you're watching. so from the viewer side, it's a much better experience because there are no interruptions. it feels very much like any other online subscription service and, because i watch a lot of youtube. it works out really well for me now. it's not inexpensive now. when i first subscribed it was 9.99 a month and because i have kept my subscription going since i first signed up, that's all they charged me. but if you sign up now, it is twelve dollars a month here in the us and the price varies based on different locations. uh, one pro tip here is that if you do have apple devices, don't subscribe through the app, because apple charges an additional commission fee and they basically bill you that. so you'll get a better deal if you sign up directly and then just link your account from your iphone. there is also a family plan and that is 18 a month and you can add additional members of your household up to five to the same account, and that might be a little less expensive, of course, than getting individual accounts for everybody. and if you're a student- and i'm guessing a student in college or regular school- you get a lower rate of 699 a month. now, what you get for that is the ad free experience that we just toked about. additionally, you get background audio play, which is probably something that should be a feature of youtube by default, but you have to pay to get that. so what i use it for is i have a couple of podcasts that i follow on youtube and i just listen to it while i'm out walking my dog through the youtube app using the background audio, and that works really well for my purposes, but also really well for the creator, because they're compensated based on every minute that i consume, and i'll tok more about that in a minute. they also allow you to download videos for offline viewing, and something that i do there is if i'm going on a trip, which of course, i don't do these days- i set up a playlist for that trip and i can download the entire playlist automatikally before i leave. so when i'm on the plane, i can watch a bunch of youtube videos that i want to catch up on. and another neat feature is that you get access to the youtube music premium service, which is basically google's equivalent of spotify. they've got a pretty decent library now, and if you have any google devices around the house, you can link those up to it also, so you can ask it to play an artist or a playlist or whatever, and it will grab music from youtube music premium. i really like the music service quite a bit, and one other bonus is that if you have kids in the house, the youtube kids app also benefits from premium and you don't need a family account to do it. so my two kids have youtube kids on their ipads and i linked their app to my google account. so when they're on youtube kids they don't get any ads, which is great, although most of what they watch is an ad, because they're all toy videos. and then also they can download videos for offline viewing through that premium account. and unfortunately, the way the youtube kids app handles downloads is that it just downloads a bunch of stuff that it thinks the kid might want to watch. you have no control over it. but if the kid leaves the house, there's no interruption in video playback. it just seamlessly rolls over to the offline videos that it downloaded and usually it keeps a good amount of content inside of the ipad, although that certainly has implications for your storage. now, one other benefit of youtube premium is that the movies and shows that are free with ads are free without ads on youtube premium. there's no interruption, they just play all the way through like something on netflix. i checked out the awesome star trek deep space nine documentary the other day and i was able to watch it all the way through. so if you are a heavy consumer of youtube, like i am, there's some real benefit to getting a subscription. you can watch more stuff without interruption, things launch quicker, there's additional options for offline viewing and background audio and altogether i think- for me at least- it's a pretty good value for the price, and, of course, it's up to you to decide whether or not you want to subscribe to it, but for me it works out well and i'm happy to spend my 10 bucks a month for the service. now, youtube premium is also a significant thing for creators because we are compensated by the watch minute and 55 of the revenue in the aggregate from subscribers goes into this pool of funds that gets shared with creators every month and that's significant for many channels. tiknology connections made a really good twitter post the other day. you should check out his youtube channel if you haven't seen it before. yeah, i think you'll like it. he says that youtube premium is really good in that twitter post, not only because it makes the youtube experience a thousand percent better, but it also diminishes the many problems that are created by youtube being an advertiser driven platform, and what he means by that is that even videos that have been demonetized by youtube still earn premium revenue. so if you ever see a little yellow dollar sign in one of your videos because it violated one of the 12 000 different things that they don't let you post, you will get premium revenue on that video, provided, of course, it falls within the general youtube terms of service. and a good example of a channel that could benefit from more premium subscribers is this great channel called blancolirio. he is an airline pilot who covers airline accidents throughout the world, and anytime he toks about an airline accident, youtube demonetizes the video. i'm still seeing them in my feed. i'm still able to watch these videos, but because they've deemed it not safe for advertisers, based on their criteria, he's not able to earn revenue share from ads that might appear on the video. so as a result, you don't often see an ad on his video, unless the advertiser specifically wants to put an ad there. but blanco lyrio's channel is getting my premium revenue because every minute i watch is going to compensate him in some way from the share of my subscription fee. so this goes beyond just politikal stuff. it can go into current events channels like this- and i've long disagreed with youtube by demonetizing all this journalism out there, because if it covers a tragedy, it's suddenly off limits for advertising, and this is one way that they can get around that, because i think they still want to support these types of creators. it adds value to the platform, but the advertisers just don't want the risk, and this is one way to help these types of creators see a little bit more revenue. but what's important to note here is that this is not a one to one view to dollar ratio. in other words, if you were only watching my channel, i'm not getting the full amount of your subscription, because the way it works is that your subscription goes into a big pool of all of the subscribers and then youtube takes that amount of money and then divides it by the amount of watch time that each channel got, and you're

YouTube Premium: Is It Worth It?!

what's up everyone. this is Dave LeClair with make Yousef calm, and today we're gonna take a look at the pros and cons of YouTube premium. is it worth plunking down your hard-earned money and getting that subscription, or should you stik with some free youtube? well, first, let's tok about how much YouTube premium cost. it's 12 bucks a month. well, tiknically 1199, but who's counting? it's a little bit more if you actually sign up on your iPhone or iPad, because you have to, Apple charges a percentage and then YouTube is like: well, we're not going to eat that, so you have to pay a little more because you have to pay the percentage that Apple take. so let's tok about what you get when you sign up for YouTube premium. first and foremost, you get no ads on videos, which is pretty cool. you can still support the creators on YouTube, but you don't have to sit through boring ads. obviously, you can block ads if you want, but if you use YouTube's premium and you don't watch the ads, for that few bucks a month, you can actually help support the people who make the content you're watching on YouTube, which is always nice, because without money, they're probably not going to make the videos you love anymore. another benefit of YouTube Premium is that you get access to all the YouTube originals, and YouTube has actually built up a pretty solid slate of original shows that are worth watching. some of them- not all of them, but some of them- are pretty good. so here's just a few YouTube originals that are more than worth checking out. you got Wayne, impulse, best shot, origin, weird City and even Cobra Kai, which is my personal favorite of all the YouTube originals. I've watched that show. I've actually gone through it twice. it's I liked it that much, but maybe I'm just a big karate kid mark from back in the day, I don't know. but either way, Cobra Kai is really cool. I mean, the list goes on and on. there's a ton of originals to watch. and then the. the other big benefit you get is that you get access to YouTube music, which is basically like Spotify for YouTube, so you can kind of condense down your monthly subscriptions and have your video and your music serviced all in one for that 12 bucks a month, which is pretty cool. you don't to spend $10 on Spotify and $12 on YouTube premium. the only thing is you lose out on all the social aspects of Spotify if all your friends use it and that's your go-to music player. you lose out on that by switching youtube, but you save money. so again, pros and cons, it's all about weighing what out. for you, the last couple benefits really work out well for mobile users. you have the ability to download videos and take them on the go. so if you have a situation where you're gonna be watching a lot of videos and you don't have access to data or you don't want to use all your cellular data, you could download the videos, take them with you lots of month ago. and the other thing that's nice- which I actually use this one all the time- is that you can watch stuff in the background, so you can have a video playing and then close the apps, go about your business and have it still playing in the background. I use this because I watch shows like critikal role, which is like a four-hour long dungeon dragon session, and a lot of the time it's just them sitting there toking. I don't need to see that, so put it in the background, let it play. I keep listening to what's happening and I play hearthstone or something else on my phone, so it's a nice feature to have. it's not like a deal breaker or it's not gonna change your life or anything. but if you watch like really long videos that are not like action intensive, it is a cool feature to have. so, really, it all comes down to to your preferences. how much does what I just spelled out for you? how much does that interest you? is that something that you consider worth 12 bucks a month? personally, I think it is worth 12 bucks a month. I really like the YouTube originals and, as I mentioned, I watch shows like critikal role. they're like 4 hours long and YouTube injects a lot of ads into those and it makes watching I'm very intrusive. so that's very nice. and again I mentioned, the background play is very cool. personally, I don't use YouTube music. I still pay for a Spotify subscription. again, that's gonna come down to your preference. YouTube Premium: Is it worth it..?

in this video, we're going to take a look at what is YouTube premium and the biggest YouTube premium benefits right now, and whether or not it's actually worth paying that monthly YouTube subscription fee, whether you're a regular viewer or a content creator. so for those of you who aren't aware, yes, YouTube does have a monthly subscription fee. it is totally optional. it is definitely not required and in terms of who it's actually good for, that's what we're going to look at in this video. so, for context, let's take a look at how much it costs and then we can dive into all the features. so the time of filming this video, you can currently sign up to YouTube premium with a one month free trial and it's going to cost you then 11.99 per month after that. now, that is for a single account. there is also a family plan available as well, which lets you add up to five additional accounts, so six in total. so you're toking a similar ballpark to Netflix, Disney, Amazon, those sorts of services, but what YouTube offers is a little bit different. the main reason that most people will sign up for YouTube premium is to watch YouTube without ads. now I'm going to tell you I was a little bit skeptikal at first about signing up because ads on YouTube- they've been there for a very long time. we're all used to clicking that skip button to jump straight to the content, but having YouTube premium and just not having any ads, it is absolutely amazing. it is a totally different experience and I find that I spend a lot more time on the platform and enjoy my time a lot more on the platform, just not having to watch ads. the way I like to look at it is: you're essentially buying back your time. for a small monthly fee, you can jump straight into the content, get the information you need or sit back and be entertained without being interrupted constantly by ads. but that's not all you get access to in your subscription. you also get access to YouTube music, which is essentially YouTube's answer to Spotify. now, back when that first launched, I found it pretty buggy. there were lots of music tracks and things that I couldn't find on there. but it's actually come a really long way and it's now what I use for music across my devices. so you get access to the premium level of YouTube music as well. so, again, no ads. and that alarm will cost you 9.99 per month just for that. now included, you also get access to YouTube Originals, which is some exclusive or unreleased or restricted content on the platform. now, this is where shows like Cobra Kai were first released, which is now available out on Netflix. but outside of that, in my opinion, there's really not too much in there that is grabbing my attention. I really don't find myself ever going there to look for something to consume, because there's enough great stuff on YouTube without even needing to go in there. but two other included features and big draw cards for YouTube premium, as far as I'm concerned, are downloadable videos and background play. now, download videos is pretty self-explanatory. this is where you can download or offline YouTube video content to watch when you're offline. when you're traveling around, you don't have internet. this is perfect if you're going on a flight. recently I went on a family vacation. instead of downloading and offlineing some Netflix shows or some from another platform, I literally just offline YouTube videos and that's what I watched for the flight, and it really is as simple as just finding videos you want to watch later and hit the little download button when you have a YouTube premium subscription then to play them back when you open up the app, you want to go down to library down the bottom right hand corner and there is a section in there with all of your downloaded videos and the second one, background play and picture in picture. this allows you to turn off your phone screen and still have YouTube videos or YouTube music playing. so it plays in the background without your phone screen needing to be on. or maybe you're switching between different apps. it's not going to stop that video playback. if you've got this feature and this picture-in-picture support- meaning that if you are using another app- full screen- then you can have a minimized version of your YouTube content playing and you can overlay that on top of any other apps you're using on your device. now first, this is something that I really wouldn't use too much, but it's actually something that I do use all the time. so a great example: I've been experimenting laying in bed at night listening to some guided meditations, and what this means is I can actually turn my phone screen off that I'm actually using to play the YouTube video, so that my screen isn't lighting up the room. so, background playlist, letting you play with your phone screen off and your phone essentially locked, so you're not going to knock it, you're not going to touch anything. it gives a pretty good experience. so those are the features of what's included in a YouTube premium subscription. now, one more thing that YouTube has come out with recently as a test. so this isn't official, this isn't final. they are testing 4K video content being restricted and only accessible for those people that do have a YouTube premium subscription, meaning that if you're just on a free YouTube account, you can access everything up to 4K, but all the 4K stuff you'd need to have a subscription for. so, again, it's not locked in stone yet. it is something that they are testing, apparently, so it'd be interesting to see where they land with this. so, is YouTube premium worth it? do you need it? no, you absolutely do not need it. it is not a requirement. but is it worthwhile? yeah, I personally think it is. I am someone who hates sitting through and watching ads and waiting to consume the video that I clicked on. and again, that experience of where you click on a video and it just plays, and it happens for every video. it's an amazing experience. and if you spend a lot of time on the platform, like I do, then having that better experience is amazing, but also you're essentially buying your time back. so for that piece, for the ad removal alone. that is enough for me to justify the expense, but also that you're given access to YouTube music premium and you get the background play and the picture in picture play as well. I really do personally think that it is a no-brainer. now for those of you that are thinking about YouTube ads and making money on YouTube, and how does this affect that? well, you can actually still make money from people watching your videos with a YouTube premium subscription too. so it's not that you're not making any money from those people. it's just treated a little bit differently. so a percentage of all the YouTube premium subscriptions is shared amongst creators who do have views from viewers that are watching that do have YouTube premium. so it's kind of like a pool of money that is divided up against the channels that are monetized, that have video plays that are from people who have a YouTube premium subscription. so, yes, you can definitely still make money from your videos if people are watching them with a YouTube premium subscription. so it's not like you're just using an ad blocker or something. it's actually tracked and the content creator actually still gets rewarded from you watching their videos. but I'd love to hear from you guys. let me know in the comments. are you already using YouTube premium? are you now considering it, or is there no way that you're going to give YouTube money to watch free YouTube videos? now for me, running the day-to-day stuff of Primal video, there is one tool that runs my life. check out the video linked on screen, because this tool is an absolute Game Changer and it's totally changed the way that I do things. see you in there.
