Are you interested in starting an online boutique, but don't want to invest in upfront inventory costs or deal with shipping products yourself? Look no further! In this article, we'll guide you step-by-step on how to start an online boutique without any upfront costs for inventory.

Starting an online boutique can be a lucrative business, but the costs of inventory and shipping can be daunting. Luckily, there are options like dropshipping and print-on-demand that can help you avoid these costs. In this article, we'll walk you through the process of starting your own online boutique without any upfront inventory costs.

Step 1: Decide What to Sell

Before you can start your online boutique, you need to decide what type of clothing you want to sell. Are you interested in selling clothing for kids or adults? Is there a certain aesthetic you want to sell, like cottagecore or dark academia? Or do you want to create your own brand and sell your own designs? Deciding this is important for determining which supplier to go with and creating a customer avatar for marketing.

Step 2: Choose a Supplier

There are a variety of print-on-demand and dropshipping suppliers to choose from, such as Printify, Printful, CJ Dropshipping, and AliExpress. When comparing suppliers, consider which one offers the products you want to sell, the best prices, and shipping times to your target audience.

Step 3: Create Your Website

Sign up for Shopify and get your own custom domain name to make your store look professional and trustworthy. Add your products by installing your supplier's app and connect it to your Shopify store. Choose a theme that appeals to your target audience and showcases your products well, like Moab, which comes with pre-designed features and two theme presets.

Starting an online boutique without any upfront inventory costs is possible with dropshipping and print-on-demand suppliers. By deciding what to sell, choosing a supplier, and creating your website, you can start your own successful online boutique today.

Support Black Colleges: A Story of Success

Last week, I received a DM from Justin Phillips, one of the co-founders of Support Black Colleges, a brand dedicated to supporting historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and promoting black education. After eight months of hard work, this brand has become a huge success, making millions of dollars a year and gaining hundreds of thousands of followers. To learn more about the company's story, I flew out to Atlanta to meet with Justin and tour his warehouse.

Starting the Business

Justin and his business partner founded Support Black Colleges in 2012. Justin, who graduated from Howard University, initially helped out with social media and digital strategy but didn't become more involved until his partner asked him to help take the business more seriously a few years later. With Justin on board, the company began to thrive, and two and a half years ago, they hit a major turning point.

Current Success

Today, Support Black Colleges is doing collaborations with major celebrities and brands, including getting their clothes in NBA 2K and making all the gear for the NBA All-Star game. Justin's day-to-day tasks include managing the team, designing new products, and checking inventory and orders.

Running the Business

The warehouse is where all the magic happens, with all the inventory neatly organized and tracked with the help of a program called Finale Inventory. Justin also uses ShipStation to manage shipping. They get their patches for their hoodies from overseas, heat press them onto the clothing, and then sew them down. They order their blanks from overseas or a U.S.-based inventory supplier.

Tips for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those interested in starting their own clothing line, Justin advises knowing yourself and what type of business you want to create. Different business models work for different people, and understanding your stress level, time commitment, and desired income can help determine which approach is best.

Personal Journey

Justin attributes his work ethic to his mother, who raised him as a single parent and always hustled to provide for him. He started his first business selling candy as a kid and has tried various online businesses before finding success with Support Black Colleges.

Support Black Colleges is a brand that started with a mission to support HBCUs and has now become a major success story. Justin's hard work and dedication, along with his understanding of what works best for him, have helped him build a thriving business. Aspiring entrepreneurs can learn from his journey and apply his advice to their own endeavors.
