In this article, I will be sharing my personal experience of working as a Bike Tech at Dick's Sporting Goods. I will be discussing my primary duties, work environment, application and interview process, and what sets me apart from other candidates.

Primary Duties:

As a Bike Tech, my primary duty was to maintain bikes and fitness equipment. I was responsible for mechanically maintaining bikes, repairing and servicing them, and building brand new bikes out of the box. I also had to take care of the fitness department, where I helped people find the equipment they needed and stocked all the fitness stuff. Additionally, I had to talk to people about ellipticals, treadmills, and stack the weights when they came off the truck.

Work Environment:

The work environment at Dick's Sporting Goods was that of a sporting goods store. The dress code was mandatory, and I had to wear sporting apparel like sweatpants, basketball shorts, and a dry fit t-shirt. The company had everything structured into small segments, and they gave employees detailed instructions on how to do their jobs. They were big on metrics, and we were always being encouraged to increase them. However, the flexibility of the job was incredible, and I could set my own hours within the company's structure.

Application and Interview Process:

The application process was done online, and the interview was broken down into playbooks. I had to answer scripted questions and give scripted scenarios, like how to deal with an angry customer. I had experience in bicycles, and that set me apart from other candidates. I had certifications from technical schools that allowed me to do all sorts of service on bicycles.

Overall, working as a Bike Tech at Dick's Sporting Goods was a good part-time job for me, as I was able to set my own hours and had the flexibility I needed as a full-time student. However, I would not recommend it as a long-term career option, as the company can be demanding and not treat employees equally. My advice to job seekers would be to consider this job as a part-time option, but to be cautious about planting roots there.
