I Closed 43 Of My Shopify Stores (2021 Update)

startTime durationTime text
00:00:00 00:00:03 well this might be a little embarrassing
00:00:01 00:00:06 but today we're going to tok about
00:00:03 00:00:06 why so many of my shopify stores have
00:00:06 00:00:08 failed
00:00:06 00:00:10 and i'm actually going to break down a
00:00:08 00:00:11 little bit of stigma just kind of stuff
00:00:10 00:00:13 i feel is out there in the industry that
00:00:11 00:00:15 people really don't understand
00:00:13 00:00:17 that ultimately leads to you finding a
00:00:15 00:00:19 product as well as a store
00:00:17 00:00:20 that will ultimately be successful and
00:00:19 00:00:21 successful can mean a whole bunch of
00:00:20 00:00:23 different things
00:00:21 00:00:25 i just plan and simply mean making
00:00:23 00:00:27 profit
00:00:25 00:00:28 so hey welcome back into another video
00:00:27 00:00:30 if you're new here my name is hayden and
00:00:28 00:00:31 on this channel we tok a lot about
00:00:30 00:00:33 business primarily e-commerce real
00:00:31 00:00:35 estate and some other random fun stuff
00:00:33 00:00:37 with cars and travel
00:00:35 00:00:38 in this video i want to take you through
00:00:37 00:00:41 as quickly as possible
00:00:38 00:00:42 three main things that have led to not
00:00:41 00:00:43 only i think the industry standards like
00:00:42 00:00:46 96
00:00:43 00:00:47 of shopify stores being closed within a
00:00:46 00:00:50 60-day window
00:00:47 00:00:51 but also why probably 80 or maybe even
00:00:50 00:00:53 90
00:00:51 00:00:54 of my shopify stores have failed and why
00:00:53 00:00:57 an even higher
00:00:54 00:00:59 amount of that have been closed i want
00:00:57 00:01:00 to explain why i only just have a couple
00:00:59 00:01:01 running i want to tok about the
00:01:00 00:01:02 differences that really make something
00:01:01 00:01:04 stand out
00:01:02 00:01:05 and just in case you don't really know
00:01:04 00:01:06 why you haven't watched a lot of stuff
00:01:05 00:01:08 in the channel
00:01:06 00:01:11 this is not from a one store perspective
00:01:08 00:01:11 i myself have probably had over 40 to 45
00:01:11 00:01:14 stores
00:01:11 00:01:15 over the last five years i haven't done
00:01:14 00:01:16 you know running one store up to three
00:01:15 00:01:18 hundred thousand dollars and then i just
00:01:16 00:01:20 sell a course
00:01:18 00:01:21 i'm actively involved in this industry
00:01:20 00:01:23 every single day i haven't done
00:01:21 00:01:24 five hundred thousand or a million we're
00:01:23 00:01:25 toking tens of millions of dollars in
00:01:24 00:01:26 sales
00:01:25 00:01:28 which is still just such a blip in the
00:01:26 00:01:30 radar when it comes to the total gross
00:01:28 00:01:32 ecommerce sales online
00:01:30 00:01:34 but nonetheless i want to be able to
00:01:32 00:01:35 share my perspective and break all this
00:01:34 00:01:36 down with you so if you're excited for
00:01:35 00:01:39 it make sure to smash a like down below
00:01:36 00:01:41 and let's jump into these three things
00:01:39 00:01:42 so before i fully start embarrassing
00:01:41 00:01:44 myself and explaining exactly a couple
00:01:42 00:01:45 of these mistakes that i've made
00:01:44 00:01:47 i want to just give you a little bit
00:01:45 00:01:49 more on those percentages for my stores
00:01:47 00:01:51 i open multiple stores for the purpose
00:01:49 00:01:53 of making youtube video examples and
00:01:51 00:01:54 showing stuff inside of my course when
00:01:53 00:01:57 i'm like running up a store and i want
00:01:54 00:01:58 to show the ad strategy from scratch
00:01:57 00:02:00 or show something with aggressive
00:01:58 00:02:01 scaling which by the way merry christmas
00:02:00 00:02:03 that's gonna be when i'm posting this
00:02:01 00:02:04 video if you guys celebrate christmas or
00:02:03 00:02:06 just the holidays in general
00:02:04 00:02:08 hope you're having an extremely great
00:02:06 00:02:09 day whenever you're watching this
00:02:08 00:02:11 as long as you're watching this within a
00:02:09 00:02:12 couple week timeline right now you can
00:02:11 00:02:14 find our ecommerce program
00:02:12 00:02:16 on a 50 off discount plus you'll get
00:02:14 00:02:17 access to an additional 20 hours worth
00:02:16 00:02:18 of training
00:02:17 00:02:20 that again just shows you more live
00:02:18 00:02:21 examples from stores that i've built you
00:02:20 00:02:22 can check that out with the top link in
00:02:21 00:02:25 the description
00:02:22 00:02:26 but from a store perspective i've opened
00:02:25 00:02:28 and closed many because they were just
00:02:26 00:02:30 examples and i wasn't like planning on
00:02:28 00:02:32 running it long term but a huge
00:02:30 00:02:33 huge portion of my stores have actually
00:02:32 00:02:35 made
00:02:33 00:02:37 less than zero dollars they've lost me
00:02:35 00:02:39 money maybe they've broken even
00:02:37 00:02:40 i've had a lot to lose and now from a
00:02:39 00:02:42 store perspective
00:02:40 00:02:44 it's very very similar to testing
00:02:42 00:02:47 products so when i build a store
00:02:44 00:02:47 personally for me i'm super selective
00:02:47 00:02:49 and super
00:02:47 00:02:51 hyper analytikal when it comes to my
00:02:49 00:02:51 product research well what does that
00:02:51 00:02:53 mean
00:02:51 00:02:55 that means i'm very confident when i
00:02:53 00:02:57 actually test a product
00:02:55 00:02:59 so i will have an entirely new store
00:02:57 00:03:00 built by my personal development team
00:02:59 00:03:01 that builds stores and they mostly build
00:03:00 00:03:03 them for our clients inside of our
00:03:01 00:03:04 agency e-com season but
00:03:03 00:03:05 nonetheless i'll have them just build a
00:03:04 00:03:06 store real quick you know it cost me
00:03:05 00:03:08 like 80 bucks
00:03:06 00:03:10 haven't built something and then i'll go
00:03:08 00:03:11 throw together some ads keep it pretty
00:03:10 00:03:13 simple test the product oh no it didn't
00:03:11 00:03:14 work whatever let's scrap it
00:03:13 00:03:16 so that's kind of how i test a lot of
00:03:14 00:03:17 people do it on a general store i don't
00:03:16 00:03:19 like to mix data too much
00:03:17 00:03:21 especially when i'm scaling quickly but
00:03:19 00:03:22 i'll focus on these stores and over time
00:03:21 00:03:24 i've also made a lot of stores that are
00:03:22 00:03:25 seasonal i really don't like to do those
00:03:24 00:03:27 anymore
00:03:25 00:03:29 but also stores that are trend based
00:03:27 00:03:30 i've done led light strips i've had
00:03:29 00:03:32 led bars on tops of trucks and that
00:03:30 00:03:33 worked for a while and
00:03:32 00:03:35 you know the different products that i
00:03:33 00:03:36 realized have a certain lifespan
00:03:35 00:03:38 not saying that either of those do or
00:03:36 00:03:39 don't but you know just ones that work
00:03:38 00:03:41 for me for a period of time and then
00:03:39 00:03:42 they might fade off and then i close
00:03:41 00:03:43 down the store after a while because
00:03:42 00:03:44 there's no point
00:03:43 00:03:47 in having a two to three hundred dollar
00:03:44 00:03:48 a month charge for the shopify fee as
00:03:47 00:03:49 well as a few apps
00:03:48 00:03:51 if i'm not actively using it and
00:03:49 00:03:52 actually at least making back that money
00:03:51 00:03:54 every single month
00:03:52 00:03:55 so that's kind of from my perspective on
00:03:54 00:03:57 why a huge amount of my stores are
00:03:55 00:03:59 closed let's tok about industry
00:03:57 00:04:00 standard numbers and my perspective on
00:03:59 00:04:02 this again
00:04:00 00:04:03 just to kind of validate this opinion
00:04:02 00:04:04 and you know i'm able to see this a lot
00:04:03 00:04:06 which is really cool
00:04:04 00:04:07 i'm really grateful to be able to see
00:04:06 00:04:08 that and have so many people like inside
00:04:07 00:04:10 of our program
00:04:08 00:04:11 build successful stores and i get to see
00:04:10 00:04:13 why they work and then they try to start
00:04:11 00:04:14 a second one and it doesn't work so i
00:04:13 00:04:15 get to see that i mean hundreds and
00:04:14 00:04:17 hundreds of times over
00:04:15 00:04:19 the number one issue i see that shopify
00:04:17 00:04:21 stores close down for
00:04:19 00:04:22 is over testing ad strategies so the
00:04:21 00:04:24 number one issue actually doesn't come
00:04:22 00:04:26 with anything shopify related
00:04:24 00:04:28 shopify people like does shopify still
00:04:26 00:04:30 work dude shopify is just a hosting
00:04:28 00:04:31 platform it's what you're doing
00:04:30 00:04:33 for your purpose on shopify if you have
00:04:31 00:04:34 an e-commerce site your purpose is to
00:04:33 00:04:36 get customers
00:04:34 00:04:38 where does that happen marketing so i
00:04:36 00:04:39 see a lot of people over testing ad
00:04:38 00:04:41 strategies which means
00:04:39 00:04:42 they watch me they watch for other
00:04:41 00:04:44 people they watch this guy they watch
00:04:42 00:04:46 this guy in france and this gal
00:04:44 00:04:47 toking about ads maybe your google ads
00:04:46 00:04:48 and facebook ads and they buy two
00:04:47 00:04:48 courses from
00:04:48 00:04:49 people who don't really know what
00:04:48 00:04:51 they're doing and it's a lot of
00:04:49 00:04:52 information i don't even want to say
00:04:51 00:04:55 misinformation
00:04:52 00:04:56 it's just cluttering your brain my
00:04:55 00:04:59 simple piece of advice
00:04:56 00:05:01 is pick one strategy and focus on it
00:04:59 00:05:02 pick one platform i would recommend
00:05:01 00:05:05 facebook but that's up to you
00:05:02 00:05:07 pick one platform one strategy and focus
00:05:05 00:05:09 on that until it's working and then once
00:05:07 00:05:10 it's working you have the cash flow you
00:05:09 00:05:12 can start doing whatever you want
00:05:10 00:05:13 you can introduce new ideas you can
00:05:12 00:05:14 introduce new strategies
00:05:13 00:05:16 that's exactly what i've done and it
00:05:14 00:05:18 works extremely well so again if you
00:05:16 00:05:18 want to learn the facebook ad side of
00:05:18 00:05:20 things and see it all
00:05:18 00:05:22 live instead of just seeing it explained
00:05:20 00:05:23 you can check out that top link in the
00:05:22 00:05:25 description
00:05:23 00:05:26 but over testing your ad strategies
00:05:25 00:05:28 that's by far in my opinion
00:05:26 00:05:29 the number one reason why stores get
00:05:28 00:05:31 shut down super quickly
00:05:29 00:05:33 people spend their entire budget really
00:05:31 00:05:33 fast and go on you have to close the
00:05:33 00:05:35 store
00:05:33 00:05:37 number two kind of relates to spending
00:05:35 00:05:41 money quickly but more so spending money
00:05:37 00:05:41 in a let's say a not so smart fashion
00:05:42 00:05:45 this is how i went broke when i was
00:05:44 00:05:46 starting ecommerce that's not a fake
00:05:45 00:05:47 story
00:05:46 00:05:49 i've told it so many times i've broken i
00:05:47 00:05:49 even found the products and i've shown
00:05:49 00:05:51 you guys
00:05:49 00:05:52 my first four products they were all a
00:05:51 00:05:54 flop and then it was a stupid little
00:05:52 00:05:55 phone case that started working
00:05:54 00:05:58 fail fail fail fail the problem with the
00:05:55 00:05:59 first fail so stupid i had saved up a
00:05:58 00:06:00 decent amount of money is about five
00:05:59 00:06:03 thousand dollars
00:06:00 00:06:04 i invested 100 into that first product
00:06:03 00:06:06 all of my money
00:06:04 00:06:07 because i was confident it would work
00:06:06 00:06:09 why i don't know i didn't know anything
00:06:07 00:06:10 about the ad strategy so i should have
00:06:09 00:06:11 seen
00:06:10 00:06:13 that it wasn't gonna work but never and
00:06:11 00:06:16 this is just my opinion for you
00:06:13 00:06:17 never invest 100 of your starting budget
00:06:16 00:06:20 into your first products marketing
00:06:17 00:06:22 the reason for that even if it does work
00:06:20 00:06:24 it's a bad habit because it's really
00:06:22 00:06:26 not very practikal to assume that your
00:06:24 00:06:27 first product is going to work
00:06:26 00:06:29 just to give you a statistik that i know
00:06:27 00:06:32 for a fact because i'm the one doing it
00:06:29 00:06:34 inside of our agency ecom season we work
00:06:32 00:06:36 with dozens of clients probably about 40
00:06:34 00:06:37 month over month and new people cycling
00:06:36 00:06:39 and x they don't want to do it
00:06:37 00:06:40 but about 40 consistent clients right
00:06:39 00:06:42 and those people have been with us for a
00:06:40 00:06:42 long time we constantly test products
00:06:42 00:06:45 for them
00:06:42 00:06:47 on average it takes four to seven
00:06:45 00:06:49 products for us to find the first
00:06:47 00:06:50 intro winner is what we call it which
00:06:49 00:06:52 means the first product that starts
00:06:50 00:06:53 producing cash flow that doesn't mean
00:06:52 00:06:55 it's going to be scaled to 500 000
00:06:53 00:06:56 a month or a million dollars a month it
00:06:55 00:06:58 might just be a small product right and
00:06:56 00:06:59 in the meantime we keep testing more
00:06:58 00:07:01 products
00:06:59 00:07:03 so your first product might not be that
00:07:01 00:07:04 winner which is why i recommend
00:07:03 00:07:06 go slow and i never like to give that
00:07:04 00:07:07 advice because i'm always like you know
00:07:06 00:07:09 super impatient
00:07:07 00:07:10 pedal to the metal let's just go go go
00:07:09 00:07:12 but being patient
00:07:10 00:07:14 is going to help you out long term so
00:07:12 00:07:16 don't spend 100 of your money on the
00:07:14 00:07:18 first product that is a huge reason
00:07:16 00:07:19 number two why in my opinion that people
00:07:18 00:07:20 close down their shopify stores so
00:07:19 00:07:21 quickly
00:07:20 00:07:23 and just to give you an example on that
00:07:21 00:07:25 point this is actually really reminds me
00:07:23 00:07:26 of sales it's very similar if anyone's a
00:07:25 00:07:28 sales person out there
00:07:26 00:07:30 you have to tok to x amount of people
00:07:28 00:07:32 to find the customer it's literally just
00:07:30 00:07:33 a numbers game it's no different with
00:07:32 00:07:34 product testing so if you're a car
00:07:33 00:07:35 salesman
00:07:34 00:07:37 tok to 100 people you know you can get
00:07:35 00:07:38 five people to be interested and get to
00:07:37 00:07:40 the dealership you sell one
00:07:38 00:07:42 so you know your numbers and this is
00:07:40 00:07:43 actually something i started to figure
00:07:42 00:07:44 out and learn when i was in the sales
00:07:43 00:07:46 game doing door-to-door sales
00:07:44 00:07:48 and then when i moved to la when i had
00:07:46 00:07:49 like just turned 17 roughly and i was
00:07:48 00:07:50 always out there
00:07:49 00:07:52 well when i moved to los angeles that's
00:07:50 00:07:53 when i really started figuring this out
00:07:52 00:07:55 it was actually a funny story i'll
00:07:53 00:07:56 summarize it in 10 seconds me and my
00:07:55 00:07:57 friend went to the beach one day in
00:07:56 00:07:59 santa monica
00:07:57 00:08:01 i was 17 and naturally an introvert
00:07:59 00:08:02 wasn't too confident
00:08:01 00:08:03 you know i was just normally just
00:08:02 00:08:05 sitting in my house running my business
00:08:03 00:08:07 stuff making good money
00:08:05 00:08:08 we made our target toked to a hundred
00:08:07 00:08:10 girls that day no matter what
00:08:08 00:08:12 try to get a hundred phone numbers i
00:08:10 00:08:13 think i walked away with like
00:08:12 00:08:15 nine and he had like 12 which is
00:08:13 00:08:18 actually decent rate to get a number
00:08:15 00:08:18 it's not great but nonetheless it took
00:08:18 00:08:20 me so
00:08:18 00:08:22 so long to approach the first girl then
00:08:20 00:08:24 the second one was so much less time so
00:08:22 00:08:25 much less time less time less time
00:08:24 00:08:27 eventually after repetition of numbers
00:08:25 00:08:28 you no longer think about it it becomes
00:08:27 00:08:30 a process
00:08:28 00:08:31 not an emotion it's the same thing in
00:08:30 00:08:32 sales it's the same thing with
00:08:31 00:08:34 e-commerce
00:08:32 00:08:36 do not feel emotion towards your product
00:08:34 00:08:37 just because it's your first product i
00:08:36 00:08:38 understand it might be scary might be
00:08:37 00:08:40 important you're attached to it
00:08:38 00:08:43 it's your first product i get it but
00:08:40 00:08:45 don't spend 100 of your time
00:08:43 00:08:46 just like sales or in this case 100 of
00:08:45 00:08:48 your money on your first product
00:08:46 00:08:50 now number three this is something that
00:08:48 00:08:52 in my opinion
00:08:50 00:08:54 is why i see a lot of people who at
00:08:52 00:08:54 least show me their stuff and are
00:08:54 00:08:56 willing to say hey
00:08:54 00:08:58 can you look at this why is this not
00:08:56 00:08:59 working this is a huge reason let me
00:08:58 00:09:00 make sure this camera's focused i've
00:08:59 00:09:01 been trying to dial it in for you guys i
00:09:00 00:09:02 apologize if it's in and out a little
00:09:01 00:09:04 bit
00:09:02 00:09:05 but one of the huge reasons i see is
00:09:04 00:09:07 people
00:09:05 00:09:08 don't price their products correctly and
00:09:07 00:09:10 that's like a micro thing normally i
00:09:08 00:09:12 don't focus on something this small
00:09:10 00:09:14 but a lot of people be like oh wait i
00:09:12 00:09:14 get it for nine dollars i can sell it
00:09:14 00:09:16 for
00:09:14 00:09:18 30. let me try and sell it for 35. right
00:09:16 00:09:20 they try to maximize the dollar volume
00:09:18 00:09:22 when they don't even have customers
00:09:20 00:09:23 coming in yet so here's a strategy this
00:09:22 00:09:24 is something nobody told me
00:09:23 00:09:26 through all the courses i've probably
00:09:24 00:09:26 gone through 11 or 12 e-commerce courses
00:09:26 00:09:29 now
00:09:26 00:09:30 just around facebook ads i never saw
00:09:29 00:09:31 this because it's not really like a hot
00:09:30 00:09:32 strategy or something this is just
00:09:31 00:09:34 something i kind of did
00:09:32 00:09:35 if you think you can sell your product
00:09:34 00:09:37 for 25 because that's what it's at on
00:09:35 00:09:38 amazon and it's very easy to sell it for
00:09:37 00:09:40 25 to 35
00:09:38 00:09:42 well i'll tell you what if you try to
00:09:40 00:09:44 sell the product for 15
00:09:42 00:09:46 and it doesn't sell there i can almost
00:09:44 00:09:48 guarantee you won't sell 25
00:09:46 00:09:49 right so people like wait i'm getting
00:09:48 00:09:51 the product for nine i don't want to
00:09:49 00:09:54 lose money on ads i'm like dude
00:09:51 00:09:54 it's a way to rapid test products lower
00:09:54 00:09:56 your price
00:09:54 00:09:58 see if there's even an interest if
00:09:56 00:09:59 there's not there's no point in spending
00:09:58 00:10:01 more time or money on it because there's
00:09:59 00:10:02 no way to be working at a higher price
00:10:01 00:10:03 point right
00:10:02 00:10:06 so just something to think about that's
00:10:03 00:10:07 an easy way to try your marketing
00:10:06 00:10:09 in a very easy way and start rapid
00:10:07 00:10:10 testing those products so
00:10:09 00:10:12 hopefully this video gave you some
00:10:10 00:10:13 insight into why people typically close
00:10:12 00:10:15 their shopify stores
00:10:13 00:10:16 one word of closing advice for you a
00:10:15 00:10:19 brick and mortar business wouldn't be
00:10:16 00:10:20 stopping within 45 days and canceling
00:10:19 00:10:21 their lease because first of all they
00:10:20 00:10:23 couldn't
00:10:21 00:10:24 it people try to think that online is
00:10:23 00:10:25 something different and it's fast and
00:10:24 00:10:27 it's crazy
00:10:25 00:10:28 just because it can be doesn't mean it
00:10:27 00:10:30 will be for most people
00:10:28 00:10:32 so just be realistik about the timeline
00:10:30 00:10:34 be realistik about your budget i try to
00:10:32 00:10:36 always tell people it's a skill it's a
00:10:34 00:10:38 very high income skill once you learn it
00:10:36 00:10:40 but it just takes time it takes work
00:10:38 00:10:41 just like anything else okay
00:10:40 00:10:43 so i really hope that that message comes
00:10:41 00:10:43 across clear i don't want this to come
00:10:43 00:10:45 across as
00:10:43 00:10:46 bragging or anything and i hope it
00:10:45 00:10:47 doesn't because i'm not trying to flex
00:10:46 00:10:49 some results
00:10:47 00:10:50 i'm not trying to you know say that
00:10:49 00:10:52 everything i do is perfect i mean a very
00:10:50 00:10:53 very very large majority of everything i
00:10:52 00:10:54 try
00:10:53 00:10:56 fails but that's the point you don't
00:10:54 00:10:58 need a lot of stuff to work
00:10:56 00:11:00 to make a bunch of money in this space
00:10:58 00:11:01 so hope that makes sense i hope this
00:11:00 00:11:02 video found you well
00:11:01 00:11:04 hope that you consider dropping a like

00:11:24 00:11:28 the product descriptions the titles the
00:11:26 00:11:30 pricing but what i will do for you is
00:11:28 00:11:31 give you an additional 800

00:11:31 00:11:34 that does show all that stuff
00:11:33 00:11:36 for free that's a training i have not
00:11:34 00:11:38 sold or given away in the last
