Market Research (Spotting Trends and Finding Ideas)

00:00:00 00:00:05 okay now switching gears from mindset
00:00:03 00:00:07 although this really is still a mindset
00:00:05 00:00:11 topic but this is much more practikal
00:00:07 00:00:12 and much more getting into the some of
00:00:11 00:00:15 the principles right out of what you
00:00:12 00:00:18 need to know about online marketing and
00:00:15 00:00:22 market research is by far one of the
00:00:18 00:00:24 most important principles that I can
00:00:22 00:00:27 stress alright real brands real
00:00:24 00:00:30 businesses real success is built on
00:00:27 00:00:34 market research right and I'm actually
00:00:30 00:00:37 going to have this market research theme
00:00:34 00:00:41 threaded throughout the entire training
00:00:37 00:00:45 and the entire Academy but this is going
00:00:41 00:00:47 to be a quick module a quick lesson here
00:00:45 00:00:50 just to explain the concept of market
00:00:47 00:00:53 research and give you some some really
00:00:50 00:00:57 good insight on how you can start
00:00:53 00:00:59 identifying what the market wants right
00:00:57 00:01:01 because identifying what the market
00:00:59 00:01:04 wants understanding consumer trends
00:01:01 00:01:07 that's how you're gonna be in a better
00:01:04 00:01:09 position to build a brand and to be able
00:01:07 00:01:12 to sell things and and stay ahead
00:01:09 00:01:14 alright now it's important to note that
00:01:12 00:01:16 market research and niche research are
00:01:14 00:01:18 not the same thing okay
00:01:16 00:01:20 market research is about looking for
00:01:18 00:01:23 trends in a market place in
00:01:20 00:01:25 understanding the consumers okay and I'm
00:01:23 00:01:29 gonna explain this more in depth so just
00:01:25 00:01:31 you know like niche research is when
00:01:29 00:01:33 you're focused on that single target
00:01:31 00:01:35 market to identify the characteristiks
00:01:33 00:01:37 and behaviors of that audience alright
00:01:35 00:01:40 so they're different niche research is
00:01:37 00:01:42 actually like a subset of market
00:01:40 00:01:43 research because at market research
00:01:42 00:01:45 you're just looking at a broad level
00:01:43 00:01:47 right you're trying to understand like
00:01:45 00:01:50 online shopping trends and you're
00:01:47 00:01:53 looking for you know new trends of
00:01:50 00:01:55 certain marketplaces that might be
00:01:53 00:01:57 coming up or what people might be
00:01:55 00:02:00 looking for starting to search for or
00:01:57 00:02:02 wanting to buy right once you identify
00:02:00 00:02:05 something within a market that's when
00:02:02 00:02:07 you start doing niche research and and
00:02:05 00:02:09 you're taking your target market and
00:02:07 00:02:11 identifying the actual audience
00:02:09 00:02:13 characteristiks
00:02:11 00:02:14 and the behaviors because that's gonna
00:02:13 00:02:17 help you start narrowing in on your
00:02:14 00:02:20 marketing message and your unique angle
00:02:17 00:02:22 tip and those types of things so I want
00:02:20 00:02:25 to tok about market research in two
00:02:22 00:02:28 ways okay spotting trends and market
00:02:25 00:02:32 gaps spotting trends and riding the wave
00:02:28 00:02:34 so this is the idea of looking for early
00:02:32 00:02:36 warning signs of consumer trends all
00:02:34 00:02:38 right because you know what most people
00:02:36 00:02:40 are doing out there right now in
00:02:38 00:02:42 e-commerce and in this whole drop
00:02:40 00:02:43 shipping and print-on-demand world is
00:02:42 00:02:47 they're looking what people are already
00:02:43 00:02:49 selling or what's already being done and
00:02:47 00:02:51 they're trying to emulate that but
00:02:49 00:02:53 trying to copy that and I don't think
00:02:51 00:02:56 that that I don't think there's anything
00:02:53 00:02:58 wrong with that as a starting point but
00:02:56 00:03:00 that's not good that that's a really
00:02:58 00:03:02 difficult model right it's a really
00:03:00 00:03:04 difficult model because this is a very
00:03:02 00:03:06 ever-changing market and so your
00:03:04 00:03:08 competitors that are actually studying
00:03:06 00:03:11 the market and looking for the early
00:03:08 00:03:14 trends are going to end up performing
00:03:11 00:03:16 and outlasting people that are always
00:03:14 00:03:18 one step behind because you're trying to
00:03:16 00:03:21 wait to see what everybody else is doing
00:03:18 00:03:23 and you're trying to copy that right so
00:03:21 00:03:26 this isn't mindset shift that again
00:03:23 00:03:28 there's nothing wrong with starting in a
00:03:26 00:03:32 position of copying existing trends but
00:03:28 00:03:36 a mindset shift of trying to get into
00:03:32 00:03:38 the position of identifying an early
00:03:36 00:03:40 trend so you can be the one who's
00:03:38 00:03:43 starting the trend and riding the wave
00:03:40 00:03:45 of that trend all the way through to the
00:03:43 00:03:46 success and everybody's trying to catch
00:03:45 00:03:48 up to you and everybody's trying to copy
00:03:46 00:03:51 you right and if you do something well
00:03:48 00:03:53 enough and you make it defensible then
00:03:51 00:03:56 it might be something that people are
00:03:53 00:03:58 not even able to copy or able to execute
00:03:56 00:04:02 you know nearly as well as as what you
00:03:58 00:04:04 do so in order to spot trend I need some
00:04:02 00:04:07 resources right so some of the places
00:04:04 00:04:08 that I think are are great to look and
00:04:07 00:04:10 I'm just going to give you these
00:04:08 00:04:13 resources that I have and that I think
00:04:10 00:04:15 are some of the better ones right then
00:04:13 00:04:17 these are not by any means all of them
00:04:15 00:04:20 I'm just going to give a couple one is
00:04:17 00:04:24 all top calm so all top calm is a place
00:04:20 00:04:27 to curates trending artikles from all
00:04:24 00:04:29 right so you can see they have been four
00:04:27 00:04:32 categories and the one that I
00:04:29 00:04:34 highlighted in here this this is a
00:04:32 00:04:37 screenshot from a couple months ago when
00:04:34 00:04:38 I when I originally created this
00:04:37 00:04:40 training but it's still relevant because
00:04:38 00:04:42 this all top is still there and these
00:04:40 00:04:44 categories are there and these artikles
00:04:42 00:04:46 are constantly updated like every day so
00:04:44 00:04:50 anyway this one did I have an example of
00:04:46 00:04:54 is five essential travel tik gadgets
00:04:50 00:04:58 for your next trip so this is a trending
00:04:54 00:05:00 artikle right now and what this gives us
00:04:58 00:05:02 an idea right the travel ditch is a big
00:05:00 00:05:04 ditch so if you're in the travel niche
00:05:02 00:05:06 or you have a travel store then coming
00:05:04 00:05:09 here and seeing that artikle could give
00:05:06 00:05:12 you a really good idea of what type of
00:05:09 00:05:14 gear and what type of tik are the
00:05:12 00:05:16 things that people are looking for right
00:05:14 00:05:18 so it can give you an idea of what what
00:05:16 00:05:21 you should be focusing on a new category
00:05:18 00:05:23 or a news a new product selection that
00:05:21 00:05:26 might be the next big thing that
00:05:23 00:05:28 everybody's starting to look for okay so
00:05:26 00:05:30 all tops not every artikle is going to
00:05:28 00:05:32 be relevant but this is a great place
00:05:30 00:05:33 that you can come find ideas because
00:05:32 00:05:36 it's based on trending stuff that's
00:05:33 00:05:40 happening around the Internet Trenton or
00:05:36 00:05:43 calm this is exactly as it sounds a
00:05:40 00:05:45 place where you can go to learn about
00:05:43 00:05:47 all things trends happening in that it's
00:05:45 00:05:50 a massive massive resource there's so
00:05:47 00:05:53 much there so many good ideas there
00:05:50 00:05:56 where you can identify you know there
00:05:53 00:05:59 they will share with you all kinds of
00:05:56 00:06:02 trends based on consumer trends market
00:05:59 00:06:04 trends business trends you know new
00:06:02 00:06:07 things they're coming up new new markets
00:06:04 00:06:10 to watch new ideas new innovations new
00:06:07 00:06:12 tiknologies there's so much you can get
00:06:10 00:06:15 from just browsing around Trenton or
00:06:12 00:06:19 comic now the picture that I have here
00:06:15 00:06:21 is an idea of showing you like different
00:06:19 00:06:26 consumer trends
00:06:21 00:06:29 okay so patterns of opportunity okay so
00:06:26 00:06:30 this is I'm gonna be brief about this
00:06:29 00:06:32 but these are what I'm toking about
00:06:30 00:06:36 when I tok about consumer trends right
00:06:32 00:06:38 so to pick out a few of these okay one
00:06:36 00:06:41 of them here is gamification
00:06:38 00:06:45 gamification is a big consumer trend on
00:06:41 00:06:47 online shopping right now even you know
00:06:45 00:06:50 even in online loyalty by keeping
00:06:47 00:06:53 something loyal to your brand
00:06:50 00:06:57 gamification works so well because it
00:06:53 00:06:58 makes the experience more enjoyable okay
00:06:57 00:07:00 so what do I mean by that a gamification
00:06:58 00:07:03 could be a loyalty program where people
00:07:00 00:07:05 collect points you know based on
00:07:03 00:07:07 different things they do where they get
00:07:05 00:07:09 you know they get access to certain
00:07:07 00:07:12 things based on the longer they've shop
00:07:09 00:07:14 tour the more they've bought or you know
00:07:12 00:07:16 you have a dashboard for each other but
00:07:14 00:07:20 for example Papa John's has a really
00:07:16 00:07:22 good one where they have for every when
00:07:20 00:07:24 you order from them they will give you
00:07:22 00:07:26 points based on those points they have a
00:07:24 00:07:28 virtual pizza pie right that's split up
00:07:26 00:07:31 into like twelve slices or something
00:07:28 00:07:33 based on collecting points you'll get a
00:07:31 00:07:36 slice of the pie once your entire
00:07:33 00:07:40 virtual pizza is filled up with all the
00:07:36 00:07:43 slices of pie you win a free pizza right
00:07:40 00:07:44 there's a lot of examples of this on
00:07:43 00:07:47 stores right now a lot of stores are
00:07:44 00:07:50 using these spin the wheel apps right
00:07:47 00:07:52 and so it's a gamification element on a
00:07:50 00:07:55 store that keeps people more engaged
00:07:52 00:07:57 they spin the wheel to try to get a
00:07:55 00:08:00 discount you collect their email and
00:07:57 00:08:02 it's just an experience that can add
00:08:00 00:08:04 more to the site and there's a lot of
00:08:02 00:08:05 types of gamification out there but
00:08:04 00:08:08 that's just an example right that's a
00:08:05 00:08:11 consumer trend something that you can
00:08:08 00:08:13 look at as an opportunity to make your
00:08:11 00:08:15 brand better and more relevant with your
00:08:13 00:08:18 audience okay
00:08:15 00:08:22 another example we'll tok about is
00:08:18 00:08:26 personalization personalization is a big
00:08:22 00:08:29 movement right now in online shopping
00:08:26 00:08:30 people want items personalized to them
00:08:29 00:08:32 this is one of the reasons that
00:08:30 00:08:35 print-on-demand is such a fantastik
00:08:32 00:08:37 opportunity because when you are doing
00:08:35 00:08:42 print on demand you can build a store
00:08:37 00:08:44 specifically say for nurses and then you
00:08:42 00:08:47 can sell items and designs on t-shirts
00:08:44 00:08:49 that are all about nurses all about the
00:08:47 00:08:52 nurse culture and all about you know
00:08:49 00:08:54 their designs that celebrate or
00:08:52 00:08:56 funny you know the different things that
00:08:54 00:08:59 again it's focused on nurses it's very
00:08:56 00:09:03 personalized to them all right in and
00:08:59 00:09:05 that's why right now big brands you know
00:09:03 00:09:07 the big brands are still the big brands
00:09:05 00:09:11 and they still do very well but there's
00:09:07 00:09:14 definitely a a reality right now that
00:09:11 00:09:17 sellers like you and I were able to
00:09:14 00:09:21 adapt to create these niche personalized
00:09:17 00:09:22 brands for for people and the big brands
00:09:21 00:09:25 aren't able to maneuver like that right
00:09:22 00:09:28 they're not able to keep up like that
00:09:25 00:09:31 and so sellers right now are taking a
00:09:28 00:09:32 big chunk collectively right if I go
00:09:31 00:09:34 across all the sellers out there doing
00:09:32 00:09:38 this starting to take a big chunk out of
00:09:34 00:09:41 the overall marketplace when it comes to
00:09:38 00:09:44 like apparel and accessories because we
00:09:41 00:09:46 can go so personalized all right so
00:09:44 00:09:47 that's just two examples you can see
00:09:46 00:09:49 there's lots of stuff I definitely
00:09:47 00:09:52 recommend going to Trenton on checking
00:09:49 00:09:54 it out checking back there every now and
00:09:52 00:09:57 then because it's just so full of good
00:09:54 00:10:01 ideas and it helps exercise your mind
00:09:57 00:10:07 trends google.com this is another
00:10:01 00:10:10 fantastik place to get ideas now when
00:10:07 00:10:12 you hear in trends google.com ok Google
00:10:10 00:10:14 Trends basically is what it's called
00:10:12 00:10:16 generally if you're looking for
00:10:14 00:10:19 e-commerce you want to set this category
00:10:16 00:10:22 to Google shopping right and so this is
00:10:19 00:10:24 as a matter of fact I mean let me
00:10:22 00:10:29 actually pull up Google Trends really
00:10:24 00:10:31 quickly ok so on Google Trends a good
00:10:29 00:10:35 way that you can just do some basic
00:10:31 00:10:38 research on what's trending is to you
00:10:35 00:10:42 know you can come in here and and
00:10:38 00:10:47 basically see what's going on so if we
00:10:42 00:10:50 come to Explorer and Google of course is
00:10:47 00:10:53 a great place to get ideas because it's
00:10:50 00:10:56 where people actually come to search
00:10:53 00:10:58 alright so you may not necessarily sell
00:10:56 00:11:01 on Google maybe you will but chances are
00:10:58 00:11:01 if people are actually searching for
00:11:01 00:11:04 something
00:11:01 00:11:06 then that means that there is demand for
00:11:04 00:11:10 it and and you can see how something is
00:11:06 00:11:13 trending so just to get ideas you can
00:11:10 00:11:15 come and so set this to Google shopping
00:11:13 00:11:17 right because we're in e-commerce and if
00:11:15 00:11:19 you're selling physical products and
00:11:17 00:11:21 Google shopping is is generally what you
00:11:19 00:11:24 is going to matter the most within
00:11:21 00:11:27 categories you can break it down into a
00:11:24 00:11:29 specific category if you want if you're
00:11:27 00:11:31 in a certain category or you can keep it
00:11:29 00:11:34 to all categories but all categories is
00:11:31 00:11:36 going to be very broad like you're gonna
00:11:34 00:11:38 probably find the biggest most popular
00:11:36 00:11:40 brands in all categories so you know you
00:11:38 00:11:43 can't really you this isn't really going
00:11:40 00:11:45 to help you so you're probably going to
00:11:43 00:11:47 want to narrow this down more to
00:11:45 00:11:49 something that you are some type of
00:11:47 00:11:53 category that you're involved in or
00:11:49 00:11:55 thinking about selling it okay generally
00:11:53 00:11:57 you know depending on the type of trend
00:11:55 00:11:58 you're looking for if you're looking for
00:11:57 00:12:00 something that's if you want to look at
00:11:58 00:12:02 an idea to see if it's been consistent
00:12:00 00:12:03 over time then you'll set this for
00:12:02 00:12:05 longer but if you want to see if
00:12:03 00:12:09 something's trending I would set it for
00:12:05 00:12:12 90 days and I would set the United
00:12:09 00:12:15 States okay because the United States is
00:12:12 00:12:18 generally the best example of a
00:12:15 00:12:20 marketplace because it's you know
00:12:18 00:12:22 basically the largest marketplace so I
00:12:20 00:12:23 would send it to the United States and
00:12:22 00:12:27 then and then you can look at something
00:12:23 00:12:29 like this right and you can see what
00:12:27 00:12:31 types of what types of things are
00:12:29 00:12:34 trending now right now this is still
00:12:31 00:12:35 Valentine's Day because we're we're on
00:12:34 00:12:39 the tail end the Valentine's Day as I
00:12:35 00:12:40 record this but let's let's move to
00:12:39 00:12:44 something else so let's go to home of
00:12:40 00:12:47 the garden okay so you can see in here
00:12:44 00:12:50 some idea it's right lazyboy sectional
00:12:47 00:12:52 kerosene heater like you can get
00:12:50 00:12:53 trending product ideas and there's
00:12:52 00:12:55 multiple queries you can look through
00:12:53 00:12:57 and it's not like every single time you
00:12:55 00:12:59 come in here you're gonna find an
00:12:57 00:13:01 amazing product but it's a starting
00:12:59 00:13:04 point for searching it's something that
00:13:01 00:13:06 you can come visit and and get ideas as
00:13:04 00:13:07 you are looking around and it's it's
00:13:06 00:13:11 something that
00:13:07 00:13:13 based on when you change this you know
00:13:11 00:13:16 this this will be you changes to past 30
00:13:13 00:13:19 days you're getting a much shorter snap
00:13:16 00:13:21 right baby shark you know that's a
00:13:19 00:13:23 that's interesting but anyway you get
00:13:21 00:13:25 the idea right this is just a way to
00:13:23 00:13:27 come in here and get ideas for us and
00:13:25 00:13:29 around different categories based on
00:13:27 00:13:32 based on using google shopping and
00:13:29 00:13:34 looking within the united states score
00:13:32 00:13:36 or whatever country you're in if you're
00:13:34 00:13:39 selling in the specific country i would
00:13:36 00:13:41 set it to that country but to just kind
00:13:39 00:13:43 of cross compare because something may
00:13:41 00:13:44 be trending in your country but the
00:13:43 00:13:46 united states again it's generally the
00:13:44 00:13:48 best representation of a marketplace out
00:13:46 00:13:50 there so usually if something's trending
00:13:48 00:13:53 and selling in the US you can sell it
00:13:50 00:13:58 elsewhere is what i mean by that
00:13:53 00:13:58 okay coming back to the market research
00:14:00 00:14:05 this is an ongoing process right and
00:14:02 00:14:06 that's why i said that it's not
00:14:05 00:14:08 necessarily that you're just going to go
00:14:06 00:14:10 to one of these sites and the very first
00:14:08 00:14:14 time you look at it you're gonna find
00:14:10 00:14:17 some kind of amazing idea okay it's it's
00:14:14 00:14:18 an ongoing process and it requires that
00:14:17 00:14:20 you're constantly looking and the
00:14:18 00:14:22 marketplace is always evolving you need
00:14:20 00:14:25 to remember that your competitors are
00:14:22 00:14:26 always going to be looking and even if
00:14:25 00:14:29 in a sense that you don't have a direct
00:14:26 00:14:31 competitor everybody's your competitors
00:14:29 00:14:32 right you're trying to build something
00:14:31 00:14:35 and you're trying to be successful and
00:14:32 00:14:36 everybody you know the the people that
00:14:35 00:14:38 are out there that are doing the market
00:14:36 00:14:40 research or have teams or people that
00:14:38 00:14:41 are doing market research for them
00:14:40 00:14:43 they're the ones that are staying ahead
00:14:41 00:14:45 of the trends they're the ones that are
00:14:43 00:14:48 helping you know move the marketplace so
00:14:45 00:14:49 you want to shape your branded and this
00:14:48 00:14:52 is really the key point here i think is
00:14:49 00:14:54 that you want to shape your brand in a
00:14:52 00:14:56 flexible way that can move in adapt with
00:14:54 00:14:58 new trends as they happen what do I mean
00:14:56 00:15:02 by that I mean like don't lock yourself
00:14:58 00:15:04 in to a certain position or to statik
00:15:02 00:15:07 you know something that can't be changed
00:15:04 00:15:09 or they can't evolve or they can't adapt
00:15:07 00:15:11 and and look differently in maneuver and
00:15:09 00:15:12 if you're building a Shopify store
00:15:11 00:15:13 generally you shouldn't have to worry
00:15:12 00:15:16 too much about that cuz shopper buys a
00:15:13 00:15:18 very you can customize the platform very
00:15:16 00:15:21 well and and like
00:15:18 00:15:24 things and everything so but again you
00:15:21 00:15:26 just you don't want to be statik right
00:15:24 00:15:28 you don't want your you don't want your
00:15:26 00:15:30 business to exist in a bubble and think
00:15:28 00:15:32 that like okay because I had a good idea
00:15:30 00:15:35 today it's always gonna be that way you
00:15:32 00:15:37 constantly want to be looking at
00:15:35 00:15:39 consumer and market trends and thinking
00:15:37 00:15:41 about how this could affect your niche
00:15:39 00:15:42 or how it could give you an edge if you
00:15:41 00:15:44 get out ahead of the trend when you
00:15:42 00:15:46 introduce something to your audience
00:15:44 00:15:48 that you see from another industry or
00:15:46 00:15:51 and you know something selling here or
00:15:48 00:15:52 there and and we're gonna tok more
00:15:51 00:15:55 about Google Trends actually in a
00:15:52 00:15:57 further video because Google Trends is a
00:15:55 00:15:59 great place that that would be ideas as
00:15:57 00:16:02 well but you can get a lot of good ideas
00:15:59 00:16:04 just from Google Trends right just by
00:16:02 00:16:07 going there every day taking a few
00:16:04 00:16:09 minutes to browse through the shopping
00:16:07 00:16:10 category and see what's trending in
00:16:09 00:16:12 different categories in the United
00:16:10 00:16:14 States right because that's constantly
00:16:12 00:16:17 direct feedback from what people are
00:16:14 00:16:19 actually searching for of data that is
00:16:17 00:16:21 aggregated by Google so I would
00:16:19 00:16:22 definitely keep that in the Arsenal
00:16:21 00:16:24 especially if you're brand new when you
00:16:22 00:16:27 don't want to start keep that in your
00:16:24 00:16:29 arsenal of what you're doing to to make
