Shopify sales tax setup for stress-free compliance | Walk-through guide

Hello Shopify sellers, my name is Kexin from LedgerGurus and today I want to discuss the importance of setting up your sales tax correctly in your Shopify store. This might not be the most exciting topic, but it's crucial to be compliant with sales tax and not pay unnecessary fees out of your pocket.

Firstly, let's go over how sales tax works with Shopify and then I'll guide you through the necessary steps to ensure your Shopify store is sales tax compliant.

How does sales tax work with Shopify?

1. Shopify is not like Amazon or other marketplaces where they collect and remit tax for you. Every sale that goes through Shopify is your responsibility to collect and remit sales tax.

2. Shopify will not automatically turn on sales tax settings for you, so you need to do it yourself.

Steps to set up sales tax settings in Shopify:

1. Enter the places where you want Shopify to collect sales tax by going to settings, taxes, and US store. For older Shopify users, add a zip code, and for newer users, enter your sales tax license and state.

2. Scroll down to below the different countries and check the box that says automatically calculate tax on shipping. For states that don't tax shipping, add a tax override.

3. Ensure that all your taxable products are collecting sales tax by going to each product's variants and checking the box that says charge tax on this product.

4. Add all your warehouse locations in settings and locations. This is crucial for sales tax as some states have origin sourcing, while others have destination sourcing.

5. Add exempt customers' information, such as those who are buying for resale purposes. Go to customers, edit the customer's information, and check the box that says this is an exempt customer. You can also provide a reason for exemption.

By following these five steps, you can be confident that your Shopify store is sales tax compliant and avoid unnecessary fees. If you have any questions, please leave a comment, and we will get back to you. Don't forget to like and share this video with your fellow Shopify users. Thank you for watching!
