How to Extract Any Shopify Data With One Simple Python Function

In this video, we will learn how to write a simple Python function that allows us to extract any Shopify data. We will be utilizing the Admin API Python library, specifically the restful resources of the API. This will be a short video where we will start with a quick recap on how to get access to the API, then write the main Python function, and finally, see how we can extract orders, products, and customers from the API.

Steps:

1. To get the API key, go to Apps > App and Sales Channel Settings > Develop Apps, and choose one of the installed apps. In this case, we choose Insights and go to API credentials.

2. Install the Shopify API library by running pip install upgrade shopify API.

3. Import the Shopify and OS libraries, and extract the API key and merchant name from the end file. Then, activate the API session.

4. Write a function called getdata which takes the object name as an argument and returns a list of dictionaries.

5. Use Python's getattr method to return the value of a named attribute of the Shopify object. This attribute is what we need to extract the data. Then, call find on the attribute to extract paginated data.

6. Loop through the data object and append all the elements to a list. Check if the data object has an attribute called hasnext page. If it does, call another attribute called next page which returns the next page of the object. Loop through the data again and keep doing this until there are no more pages.

7. Call the getdata function on any of the attributes we want to use from the Shopify object. For instance, we can get all the order data out by calling getdata on order. To get the actual data out, choose one of the elements and call attributes on that element.

8. We can also fetch all the customers and products in the same way using the same function. We can fetch more than just customers, orders, and products by looking at the Shopify object and seeing all the different attributes.

In conclusion, by utilizing the Shopify API Python library, we can easily extract data from the Shopify store. We have written a function that can be reused for getting different types of data, and we have learned how to extract paginated data. If you have a lot of data in your Shopify store, you should use the GraphQL API to curate the data you extract.
